Visiting Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nursery Viewing

Visiting Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nursery Viewing

A while ago, we had the pleasure of visiting the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nursery Viewing that they offer every day between 11am and 12pm. It was truly an amazing experience. For those of you that are not familiar with Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, they offer care for baby elephants that need it as well as care for other animals too. You can read more about what they do and why it’s important for Kenya’s wildlife here. You can choose to donate and support their cause by adopting an elephant. If you do plan to visit, keep in mind that the entrance fees are 20 USD per adult and 5 USD per child and they must be paid in advance through eCitizen.

The elephants we saw were all quite young as Sheldrick Wildlife Trust frees them once they are old enough to survive on their own. It was such an incredible experience that I don’t even know how to describe it. We learnt so much about elephants as well as some of the other animals they have helped. They also mentioned that poaching has decreased recently which is amazing news.

The elephants were so playful and friendly. They kept coming close to the humans but not where we were standing. I thought I wouldn’t be able to pet them but at the last moment one of the animals came close to our side and we were able to pet him. It was amazing!

Anyway, I wanted to share this amazing experience with all of you here so enjoy the images and I’ll share a video version on YouTube too which you’ll find at the end of the post.

  3. I so enjoyed this. I love elephants! I’m so glad to hear that poaching has decreased and I’m glad you got to pet one … and so gently. How did it feel? Was it what you expected? Maybe I missed it, but I’m wondering why so many need help. Were their mothers killed?

    1. Thank you, I love elephants too! Their skin is quite rough and muddy since they love playing with the mud. I didn’t expect it to be as rough and thick as it was. Some of their mothers were killed by poachers unfortunately and some were abandoned by their mother as they had health issues and would probably not have survived without human help. I think I forgot to mention that actually so thanks for asking!

  4. I love elephant…

  12. I remember attending a conference in Nairobi and we were given a tour of a substantial wildlife sanctuary, and I wish I could remember the name of that sanctuary. It had the full range of African animals in that place. It was the high point of my visit there.

    1. Oh I see, was it the animal orphanage by any chance?

      1. No it was a safari park but I can’t remember the name. It didn’t seem to be all that far away from Nairobi

        1. Oh okay, was it the Nairobi national park? They do safaris there.

          1. That sounds like the one. It would have been in the early 1990’s as I recall. I really enjoyed that day.

  29. Petting an elephant is indeed special. And the photographs of the giraffe have me wondering if it thought it was hiding among the trees. If so, unsuccessfully, thank goodness. Your cousin brother did a great job with the photos. This looks to be a wonderful place and cause. And thank you for sharing your visit!

    1. It was an amazing experience. I don’t think the giraffe was trying to hide, they’re very used to humans. Thankfully so because we got a great view of it. Thank you and yes the images came out great!

  39. Hey Poojah, just got a notification that you had “recommended” my blog. After some investigating I found that’s a list on the reader. I couldn’t find out anything else about it though. Do you have more info? I’m always curious about things wp is doing. Mainly so I know how I’m about to be screwed over by them 😀

    1. Lol, that’s totally fair because every new change seems to come with glitches. From what I’ve seen, the list is on the Reader and when you add someone to the list they appear on your homepage when someone visits your site through the Reader. There’s now a “recommended blogs” option on our profile/homepage when viewed on the Reader.

      1. Ohhhh, good to know. I’m going to have to check that out. Thanks a lot for explaining 😀

      2. and I just checked things out by using you as a control point. Does appear that WP is really trying to make the Reader it’s own little self-contained eco-system now.
I’ll be honest, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. While I’m always happy for progress from WP, their idea of progress is so far removed from the normal bloggers that it’s almost two different things, so it is really hard to judge.

        1. Honestly, these days I just see how things will play out because there’s no point in complaining- they clearly don’t care much about user feedback.
