The One Where I Almost Turned Into Spiderman…

That’s right y’all. Your girl almost turned into Spiderman (Spiderwoman?) the other day. But let me back up and tell you the story from the start.

In December, my cousins and I did some exploring in Nairobi and we had some time before going for lunch. So we stopped by a resort/spa just to check it out. It’s a lovely place but what stood out was this random little spider we spotted. At first, I didn’t even realise it was a spider. My brain just assumed that it was a toy or something because of the colour. In person, it was less luminous and more gummy like if that makes any sense.

The One Where I Almost Turned Into Spiderman...

As I was trying to take pictures and videos to share on the blog and also for memories, I noticed the spider had disappeared. Of course, I instantly panicked, moved my hand and the spider jumped off my phone and back onto the table. It was so close to climbing onto my hand, it totally freaked me out and by no coincidence we left the place soon after.

Still, it was quite a fun experience and we got to see something we had never seen before. And at the end of the day isn’t life all about those little moments you almost turn into Spiderman…

Have you ever seen a spider this shade? What’s the weirdest insect you’ve ever seen? Let me know in the comments section located below. Or simply stop by and say hi!

I recently published my first book and would be honoured if you took a minute to check it out here.

  1. Ahh, I would have screamed. lol I do not like spiders at all.

    1. Lol I don’t mind spiders in general but this one freaked me out.

  2. Spiders bring good luck.
    Do you believe it?
    Not a black widow, no…
You can take it or leave it

    1. Generally I love them but this one freaked me out lol.

      1. I totally get it

  3. I don’t think I have seen a spider in that shade, that was one unique spider.

    1. For sure, it was so unique.

  4. I often see small green spiders on leaves and grass. I’m not particularly afraid of spiders, so I don’t pay them much attention. However, I can be surprised when a large spider that normally lives outside comes inside my house. 😅

    1. Oh that’s interesting, we never see green spiders in my area. Lol yeah, the large ones are scary 😅

  5. I have never seen one that shade before. I’d probably have squashed it with a napkin. So lucky him, he gets to live another day 😉

Are you going to sing us the Spiderman song?

    1. Lol lucky spider and lucky me because I was technically the one in its territory.

Ooh I sing the Spiderman song all the time anyway, sometimes it just gets stuck in my head although I can think of a number of things spiders can do Spiderman can’t. 😅

  6. Too creepy, Pooja! Over here we have the Brown Recluse, a spider with such potent venom that it can cause you to need surgical removal of fingers, hands and such as it eats the tissue. Nasty vermin.

    1. Ewww…. That’s gross! I think humans have an innate desire to run away, or scream when we see spiders. That sounds absolutely terrifying!

      1. I’ve seen photos of the damage this spider can do. Disgusting. I just followed your blog. I hope you feel better soon. 💕

        1. Thank you for following me, John! Very much appreciated! 😊💕 I will try to post more often (I always say this and then forget to post for several weeks at a time lol)

          1. You are welcome Hilary! Be well. 🌹💕

      2. Spiders are symbols of evil to me. Give them the crunch.

        1. As much as I want to say love all creatures and don’t hurt any of them, no matter how ugly and grotesque, I do agree with you there. Spiders give me the creeps!

          1. I was being very honest, Hilary. It’s the same thing with snakes. Yuck.

    2. Omg woah that’s actually so creepy and terrifying!

      1. Yes it is, Pooja. Look this up online.

  7. They come in many shades of color and most are harmless and useful to get rid of pesty insects invasions. But I’m not a fan of their webs after walking into them. 🙂

    1. Yes, I love having spiders in the house because they keep other insects away and never bother me. Lol, never walked into their web but I can understand 🙂

  8. I was waiting for the part where the spider bit you, but then I reread the title and it said “almost” turned into spider-man. I’m glad that you didn’t actually get bit by the spider!

    1. Haha yes, thankfully it was an “almost” incident 😅

  9. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  10. I am not a fan of spiders, but that one looks interesting. Quite a few years ago, I had some large green orb spiders in my garden that looked a bit imposing and had an almost luminescent appearance in the sunlight. I found out they were good for the garden, so let them be as long as they agreed to stay in the garden, lol.

    1. Lol yeah spiders are fine as long as they’re not too close to us. They’re actually quite a helpful part of the eco system and keep other insects away.

  12. Yikes- not a pleasant experience.

    1. Not at all, I was terrified.

  13. This is such a fun, personable piece light, curious, and instantly relatable. The opening line pulls the reader in with humor and confidence, and the Spiderman/Spiderwoman framing gives the story a playful hook that carries nicely from start to finish.
What works especially well is your conversational tone. It genuinely feels like a friend recounting a slightly dramatic, slightly hilarious moment over lunch. The way you describe the spider “less luminous and more gummy” is vivid and oddly charming, and the instant panic reaction is something most readers will immediately recognize themselves in.
I also like how you don’t over-dramatize the incident. You let it remain a small, human moment surprising, a little scary, but ultimately memorable and fun. That final reflection about life being made of those “almost-Spiderman” moments ties the piece together beautifully and gives it a warm, reflective close without losing the humor.
The call-to-action at the end feels natural rather than forced, and your curiosity about readers’ own experiences keeps the conversation open and engaging.
Overall, this post succeeds because it doesn’t try too hard it’s authentic, witty, and observant. A lovely reminder that sometimes the best stories come from the smallest, unexpected encounters.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed the post.

  14. If you had been bitten by a spider in a spa? Would your superpower be nails or hair? 🤣😎🙃

    1. I’m hoping I would gain the power of relaxation, it’s something I’ve never had before 😅

  15. When they’re too colorful, they freak me out. And also, if they’re too large. Saw someone handling a large tarantula at a zoo once..gave me nightmares.

    1. Lol same, I’m only used to the brownish spiders. The colourful ones are freaky. Lol I can imagine 😅

      1. Same here. Florida has all sorts. But you rarely see them u kess you’re in the boonies.

  16. It’s the color of a frog! 🙂 Would be fun for nail polish maybe.

    1. I have the exact colour nail polish haha! 🙂

      1. Oh that’s funny! haha

  17. Luminous green because it obviously feeds on plutonium and is a mutant from a distant cosmos. You had a lucky escape!

    1. Lol yup, I was this close to becoming a mutant too!

  18. I’ve never seen a colorful spider, only brown ones. Spiders don’t last long at our house, because we have a cat. Callie doesn’t try to eat them, but chases them so we know where they are, and can get rid of them. I don’t like creepy crawlies! 🕷️😾

    1. Yeah, I’m used to seeing brown or black spiders. This is the first really bright one I’ve ever seen. Lol I’m glad she helps keep the creep crawlies away 😹

  19. I’m glad the spider didn’t bite you, yet turning into Spider Man would be incredible. I’ve had spiders land on me before. they never bit me. They just crawl down my arms or legs and return back to nature.

    1. Yeah, I would love to be Spider Man but would hate to be bitten by a spider lol. Most are quite harmless, this one didn’t seem harmless haha. 🙂

  20. I hate bugs with a passion!

    1. I generally don’t mind spiders but this one gave me the hibbie jibbies!

  21. I have a fear of spiders. However, I love green insects, so I’d probably pet this spider lol.

    1. I would not recommend petting the spider lol.

  22. I’ve never seen one that colour!

    1. It was a first for us too!

  23. I know the world houses some really huge spiders but the ones I saw in the State of Louisiana in the United States were big enough to freak me out.

    1. The big ones are terrifying, I’m glad we don’t have them in my city.

  24. That is an interesting color. I can see it caught your attention. ❤️

    1. Yeah, it was so unique 💗

I can see why it caught your eye…it is bright.

    1. Yeah, it’s such a bright and unique colour.

  26. Pretty little guy!!! Finally you freaked out not me! 😂

    1. Lol for once 😅

  27. They come in the most fascinating designs and colors! As long as they keep eating the mosquitoes, I’m ok with them.

    1. Agreed, mosquitos are so annoying!

      1. That’s the one good thing about winter….they are gone! 💞

  28. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us, Pooja. I’m fascinated with all the creatures of the world.

    1. I’m the same way, I love finding something new.

  29. Girl I’m a spider magnet. I’ve had huntsman spiders climb up my neck and sit on top of my head, on my way to school. I screamed so hard, there was a traffic jam on the streets with rushing traffic constables to our car.
In various other incidents I’ve had spiders ignore everyone else and jump straight at me. One would think that after so many encounters I have finally lost my fear of spiders but oh boy…Far from it!

    1. Omg that’s actually so scary, why do they keep targeting you specifically?? I would have the craziest fear of spiders if that happened to me.

      1. I guess because in a room I’m the first person to notice any kinda bug….and they notice me too 😁🤷

  30. Spiders are interesting but they creep me out. I’ve had to deal with some pretty big ones before so I try to avoid them when possible. Now as for interesting insects, I got to see a praying mantis up close. They are most of the time green and have that curious look about them as if they were like little alien-like people lol.

    1. Yeah, spiders can be creepy especially the big ones. Haha yes, praying mantis do have such an odd look to them. Seeing one up close must have been fascinating.
