An Intense Yoga Experience

Yoga For Mental Health And Wellbeing | Six Word Story | An Intense Yoga Experience

I had an intense yoga experience last week that I wanted to share about here. You may wonder why and it’s actually because this is my blog and I can share whatever I want to on it. Lol, just kidding. But before I share the experience you may need some backstory.

Backstory

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before but this year I read The Body Keeps The Score and to say the book changed my life would be an understatement. I learnt so much about trauma and how it’s stored in our mind and body. One thing that’s encouraged is to reconnect with our body and let go of the stored trauma. Yoga is a great way to do this.

Then, I later read A Survivor’s Common Sense Approach to Recovery from Social Anxiety by Dr. Robert F. Mullen. That book encouraged me to leave my comfort zone and make new friends- which I did! My new friend and I were out to lunch last week and we talked about yoga (she has weekly sessions). It’s really benefitted her and I used to love doing yoga so this week I decided to get back into it and that’s when things got intense fast.

Present

The other night, I couldn’t sleep and decided to look up yoga poses that help release trauma and tried the very first one in the video. Instantly, I felt different. I felt this sense of anxiety and sadness building in my chest and before I knew what was happening I was in tears. And not just crying but weeping like a child. I cried for like 15 minutes or maybe even more but after I was done a lot of my stiffness from my hips and shoulders evaporated. It was like I had healed a decade of trauma in a matter of minutes. Am I brand new person? Nope, but I do feel a lot lighter.

I’ve done yoga before but never anything like this. A lot of people say they have similar experiences with certain poses but I assumed it was a placebo effect or something. I wouldn’t have believed it till it happened to me.

So, that was my intense yoga experience. Have you experienced anything like it? Should I share a video showing the pose I did on my YouTube channel? If you’re interested, let me know in the comments.

My first novel, Perfect, is now available on Amazon. If you would like to read it, please click here.

  1. I’m glad this helps you, Pooja! 🙏🏻😊❤️

    1. Thank you! ❤️

  2. I’ve never tried yoga! But the body keeps the score, OMG! What a book! Brilliant!

    1. Omg yes, the book is so brilliant!

  3. That’s so good yoga helped you and you were able to release pain. I used to go to yoga several times a week. But after tearing my ACL, breaking my ankle, etc. I’m afraid I’ll go to yoga class and won’t be able to do most of it.

    1. Thank you so much. Yeah, I think when you’ve had other injuries it’s best to take it easy. Some of the poses are complicated.

  4. Not yoga. But I have had tasty yogurt. Im especially a fan of northern European yogurt.

    1. Love yogurt, yum.

  5. I’ve taken up yoga but never had that experience for whatever reason. I feel Pilates helps me stay more present. Maybe because it’s more challenging.

    1. I’ve done a lot of yoga but this is the first time I had a reaction like this. I haven’t tried pilates but I have heard it’s quite a tough workout. Whatever works for you is great.

  6. Hey Pooj, glad you had such an intense yoga experience. I have had a similar one with tai chi.
My teacher has made a blend of yoga/tai chi class online, I think it’s absolutely brilliant.
What is trauma? I think most of us had some sort of trauma at some point in life, but I mean is it just a memory of the past or a prediction for the future? What you are describing is eliminating those predictions for your own future. I love it. You don’t need the foundation of past imperfect, you can build from scratch, future simple

    1. Thank you so much. That’s so interesting that you experienced something similar. I’ve heard good things about Tai Chi too, the blend sounds great.
Very true, I think it’s letting go of the past and future and focusing on the present.

      1. Yes, it’s all about now. I know the theory, practicing it is quite different for some reason

        1. Practicing is so much harder than it seems.

  7. That is quite remarkable. I did not know Yoga could do this. I have to admit I’ve never tried Yoga.

    1. Yeah, it was incredible and very unexpected. Would definitely recommend trying yoga.

  8. You had a yogasm?

  9. 🙏👍🌹

    1. Yes, exactly- letting it all go! That balance between the body and mind as well as the connection is important. Sometimes we disassociate so much from ourself that we have all this stored that we can’t even feel. Will share the video soon 🙂

      1. Great!
        With
        SMiles☺️🙌

  11. Nothing that intense.. during meditation sessions, sometimes I get that emotional release that can be very intense.
Im glad you’re looking after this aspect of your well being, Pooja.

    1. That makes sense, meditation does bring up intense feelings sometimes. Thanks, it’s important to take care of our physical and mental health.

      1. It most certainly is.

  12. That’s really so remarkable, Pooja! ☺️

I’ve never tried out yoga, but I’ve tried out going to the gym to make my body healthier and stronger. 🏋️‍♂️💪

    1. Thank you! That’s great, all forms of exercise are great for health 😊

      1. You’re most welcome! You’re absolutely right 👍☺️

  13. Sounds intense! My wife does yoga. In fact she’s doing it right now!

    1. That’s great, it’s so beneficial!

  14. I’ve never tried yoga, but I hear it’s very beneficial. I’m glad yoga was helpful for you, Pooja.

    1. Yes, it helps with mental and physical health. Thank you so much 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  15. I’ll be taking up yoga soon enough, just for the stretching side of things. I suspect it will be just at home, watching beginners videos on youtube though. I can’t imagine going into a public space with others 😀
Do you think you’ll ever go to yoga classes?

    1. That’s great, I hope it helps you as well. Although, I will warn that a lot of the videos online aren’t very professional. Make sure you follow someone that knows what they’re doing because even stretching the wrong way can cause your body a lot of damage.
I don’t think I would do in person classes to be honest, I prefer the comfort of my own home 😁

  16. That’s awesome! I’d love to know what pose that was. We really do carry around so much pent-up trauma whether we realize it or not. Release is good

    1. Will share it soon! It was such a great way to release lots of pent up emotions. Yeah, we do hold so much in our body.

  17. I’ve never tried yoga before, but I’d love to know what pose that was, because I heard so many people say how beneficial it is!

    1. Will share the pose soon, it’s very easy to do even at home!

      1. Can’t wait! I’m definitely trying it at home then, because I feel like my body really needs it.

        1. You’ll love it, it helps your body calm down almost instantly and I’ve noticed I sleep better too!

          1. Well, perfect then! Can’t wait for your post!

  18. It is your blog and you can write what you want, lol!

I haven’t had any recent experiences with this, but when I first started learning yoga, I feel like there were multiple poses that helped me heal. Physically and mentally. My body and mind needed the release all around. But I often find myself practicing yoga when I am in very distraught or painful situations and it always helps me in whatever way my meditation leads me towards. Yoga saved my mind!

    1. I’m so glad yoga has been helping you as well! It’s so great for our physical and mental health. Back when I was doing weekly yoga I genuinely felt calmer too. It gives us back control of our body and mind.

  19. I like yoga and have tried it before. The other day in PT, one of the PT therapists mentioned to this big male veteran, “It is kind of like yoga. Have you every tried it?” I had to giggle at little at his expression but it is helpful. I also like Tai Chi.

    1. Haha that’s great, yeah yoga is very beneficial for the body and mind. I’ve heard good things about Tai Chi but never tried it myself.

  20. I have stopped exercising for some months. Will restart again, once I get done with the exam and admission.

For me meditation matters more. Because I get easily distract.

    Good for you!

    1. That’s fair, when life gets busy it’s hard to keep up with our routine. Meditation is great, I’ve been doing it daily these days!

  21. What you describe is known as a my facial release. How amazingly therapeutic! I love it.

  22. Sorry. Darn autocorrect. Yoga can help with Myofascial release.

    1. Got it, I hadn’t heard of that before but just Googled Myofascial release and I think that’s exactly what it was! 😀

  23. Wow P.J <333. that is incredibly uplifting and I am so glad that you worked out for you. Yoga, greatly released the trauma and soothed your pivotal assets 😁😂😘

Just like you, I have gotten this kind of intense sensation before whenever didn't do something for a while then got back into it, like bike riding or "attempted" swimming 🤭🤣

    1. Yes, physical movement can do that 😊

      1. True, it’s all in the movements 😁😸🤗

          1. 💗🤗🤗🫶

  24. So glad you’re doing this for yourself, and that you went out with a friend! <3

As for this experience, I am the crier-at-the-end-of-every-session person, if it's a good session. There are never any thoughts associated with it, just pure release. At first I was really embarrassed, then like you learned more about it. Sadly, these days yoga is hard for me because of the issues with my hands, but you remind me to seek out resources because I'm sure there must be people adapting poses.

    1. Also wondering if you’re familiar with Gabor Mate’.

      1. I’m not but will definitely Google him!

    2. Thank you so much!

I think that’s actually such a good sign to cry after every session, it means you got to the areas of your body that needed to let go of what it was holding on to.

That’s fair, I think it’s harder with the issues with your hands but there are poses that don’t require using your hands so hopefully those will work for you.

      1. I’m sure it’s possible, just need to get myself to follow through. 🙂 <3

        1. It takes a few weeks to turn it into a habit (I’m trying to do that now) but very worth it in the long run 😊

  25. That’s a really amazing experience you’ve shared, Pooja. I’ve done yoga but never felt a powerful release of anything like you encountered.

A friend of ours is a Bodytalk therapist (here’s an explanation: https://www.goodtherapy.org/learn-about-therapy/types/body-talk-system/) and it is based in the same idea that all experiences are stored in the body and traumatic ones must be released if we are to thrive. It’s so interesting how there are so many modalities to call upon for healing. Sounds like you’ve found something great!

    1. Thanks so much, I haven’t experienced anything like it even after about a decade of doing yoga but this week was suddenly very intense.

That’s so interesting, I definitely agree with your friend that we store a lot of our trauma in our physical body!

      1. My pleasure! A very cool experience for you.

  26. I love your share and the opening you had from the yoga pose you did, Pooja! There are chakras and pathways that get accessed and sometimes it’s a matter of being still enough and ready to allow them to crack open.
It’s profound when it happens.. Same with yoga nidra or anything where you disconnect the mind with the moment and align with your highest opening.
Body talk is incredible as the body holds tension and releases when you are ready to experience a release.. so cool.. yes, by all means share it! xxx

    1. That’s so true as well! I love moving the body and being able to free ourselves from all that tension!

      1. Yes indeed and it truly makes a difference.. xxx

  27. That’s so powerful, Pooja! I’ve definitely had experiences like this. Amazing how the body does keep score! Thanks for sharing!

    1. It’s crazy how much physical stuff originates from trauma!

  28. I did yoga for about a year but never had an experience like yours. I actually quit because I found it a bit boring.

    1. It could be because of the teacher, a lot of them are “certified” but don’t know yoga very well and aren’t great at teaching/leading classes. The right teacher will always keep your interest (in my experience).

      1. The teacher was certified. It was hot yoga. The temperature felt like I was breathing in recycled hot air and didn’t feel relaxing at all.

        1. Oh that makes sense, I’ve never tried hot yoga and I don’t think I will. To be honest, I wouldn’t try anything other than traditional Indian yoga.

  29. Your experience sounds very interesting. I would be afraid to try yoga at my age because I might get in a pose and not be able to get out of it 🙂 I have attended yoga classes when I was much younger, but I have never experience anything like what you describe.

    1. Thank you so much. I hadn’t had those experiences before this one but I think it was because I had the wrong teachers. The person I’m currently following is highly trained and knows what poses are for what and explains how to do them really well. Unfortunately, her videos are in my native language which is why I didn’t share them here since I don’t think any of my followers would speak it.
Totally fair, as we get older holding those poses become more and more difficult. 🙂

  30. I’m glad you are doing yoga. I haven’t ever done it myself but my friends do it regularly.

    1. Thanks so much. 😊

      1. You’re most welcome my dear

  31. I’m glad you experienced positive effects from yoga. My faith has an alternative take on yoga that aligns with my own experiences, but I’m glad it’s working out for you

    1. Totally get that, glad you have an alternative that aligns with your faith. Thanks so much 😊

  32. I’m not doing as much yoga as I used to, and I feel it, Pooja. Thank you for the push. The older we get, the more we need those stretches and poses.

    1. I stopped yoga completely for the last few months and didn’t realise how stiff I had gotten. Absolutely, it helps keep our body flexible as we age. I’m so glad yoga helps you as well. Have a great week.

  33. Good for you. 🤣😎🙃
