Why Mental Health Should Be Taught In Schools
This is a topic I have thought about a lot. As my regular readers know, mental health is a topic that is important to me. And it’s something I try to talk about on my blog as much as possible. Although I generally focus on mental health related topics for adults, I thought today I would talk about the students. Unfortunately, a lot of students suffer from mental health issues. And suicide rates as well as mental health illness rates have increased in the youth recently. This is why I think mental health should be taught in schools and why I think it would help both students and working adults:
Decrease Stigma
I think teaching students about mental health early would really help decrease the stigma that exists around mental health and having mental health problems. The truth is, a lot of students don’t properly understand how mental health works. In fact, a lot of adults don’t either. And that’s because we’re not properly educated on it the way we are about physical health. If students understood the importance of prioritising mental health and why seeking help is important, they would grow up to be adults who also understand that. And therefore, there would be so much less stigma associated with mental health and getting help for mental health problems.
Educate Students About Mental Health
It would really help to educate students about mental health early so that they have the right resources and know what symptoms to look out for. And how to get help if they ever need it at some point of their life. It would also help to educate them about how to prioritise their mental and physical health not just physical health.
Decrease Suicide Rates
I think one of the main reasons why mental health should be taught in schools is because it would really help decrease suicide rates. Students and the younger population in general make up a large percent of suicides and it would really help them to know that there are other options out there as well as professional help.
Conclusion
