With all the changes going on with WordPress especially with the decrease in growth seen by many blog, many bloggers are wonder- will WordPress die? In fact, the idea for this came to me because of a conversation I had with Devang from FGW. He mentioned how he doesn’t think WordPress will be here a few years from now and that got me thinking. Well, here’s what I think is going to happen to WordPress in the future:
A Decrease In Growth
As with all social media and interactive platforms on the internet, they grow rapidly at first but over time growth decreases and may even stop almost altogether. What platform once ruled the internet soon becomes less popular and eventually only a minority of people are still active on it eg. Instagram, Facebook. With WordPress, I think there have been better days. We have seen times when growth was easier and traffic was not difficult to attract. But like all good things, it has been replaced by an array of social platforms.
With our attention span getting shorter and the written word becoming less popular, blogging has lost its popularity. And like all blogging platforms, WordPress and its users have seen a major decrease in traffic and overall growth. And my prediction is that it’s most likely going to decrease especially because for a long time WordPress has almost completely ignored any input from their users.
It Depends On WordPress’s Choices
When I think of whether WordPress will die or not as a platform, I always think that it largely depends on WordPress’s choices as a platform. Back in the day, bloggers had very few platforms they could share their content on. But over time more and more platforms have popped up. And quite a number of bloggers have chosen to move their site or move their content to other platforms. And many have abandoned blogging altogether in favour of social media.
If you’re a WordPress user or you’re familiar with my experiences with WordPress you know that I’m less than impressed. For a platform that claims to have so many users and host so many sites, they really don’t care about any of those sites. Their themes are lacking, their customer care has been abysmal for years and loading speed is known to be slower than other platforms which impacts your sites SEO. If WordPress continues to ignore its issues and only make changes they want to make, WordPress may actually see an end at some point.
However, my recent experiences with WordPress shows me that they do seem to be trying to improve. And take their users more seriously. Now, I don’t know if this will last or not. But if it does, it would really help get back the interactivity that once existed on this platform.
WordPress Will Never Die
I know many sites are saying that WordPress is far from dying. In fact, it’s actually growing. But only WordPress users know that’s now true. Sure, they may have the majority of users and may be getting new users everyday. But how many of the profiles are actually active? How many blogs are actually seeing a growth in both traffic and following? Back in the day you could publish just about anything and get hundreds of views and followers. Those of us that still use WordPress regularly know this is no longer true. Whether we like to admit it or not, things have changed.
But will WordPress die? That’s the main question we started off with. And personally, I don’t think it will. I don’t think WordPress will ever fully die but I do think that it’s currently stuck in limbo and will continue to do so. With the amount of platforms out there, WordPress has its work cut out. And the fact that for years they’ve done nothing to improve their platform and have a history of treating its users badly does not help their reputation. I firmly believe that WordPress is past its prime. Those of us that love this platform will stick around. But I don’t think it’s ever going to be vibrant as it once was. Like in the 2010’s when I first started blogging.
