Will WordPress Die?

Will WordPress Die?

With all the changes going on with WordPress especially with the decrease in growth seen by many blog, many bloggers are wonder- will WordPress die? In fact, the idea for this came to me because of a conversation I had with Devang from FGW. He mentioned how he doesn’t think WordPress will be here a few years from now and that got me thinking. Well, here’s what I think is going to happen to WordPress in the future:

A Decrease In Growth

As with all social media and interactive platforms on the internet, they grow rapidly at first but over time growth decreases and may even stop almost altogether. What platform once ruled the internet soon becomes less popular and eventually only a minority of people are still active on it eg. Instagram, Facebook. With WordPress, I think there have been better days. We have seen times when growth was easier and traffic was not difficult to attract. But like all good things, it has been replaced by an array of social platforms.

With our attention span getting shorter and the written word becoming less popular, blogging has lost its popularity. And like all blogging platforms, WordPress and its users have seen a major decrease in traffic and overall growth. And my prediction is that it’s most likely going to decrease especially because for a long time WordPress has almost completely ignored any input from their users.

It Depends On WordPress’s Choices

When I think of whether WordPress will die or not as a platform, I always think that it largely depends on WordPress’s choices as a platform. Back in the day, bloggers had very few platforms they could share their content on. But over time more and more platforms have popped up. And quite a number of bloggers have chosen to move their site or move their content to other platforms. And many have abandoned blogging altogether in favour of social media.

If you’re a WordPress user or you’re familiar with my experiences with WordPress you know that I’m less than impressed. For a platform that claims to have so many users and host so many sites, they really don’t care about any of those sites. Their themes are lacking, their customer care has been abysmal for years and loading speed is known to be slower than other platforms which impacts your sites SEO. If WordPress continues to ignore its issues and only make changes they want to make, WordPress may actually see an end at some point.

However, my recent experiences with WordPress shows me that they do seem to be trying to improve. And take their users more seriously. Now, I don’t know if this will last or not. But if it does, it would really help get back the interactivity that once existed on this platform.

WordPress Will Never Die

I know many sites are saying that WordPress is far from dying. In fact, it’s actually growing. But only WordPress users know that’s now true. Sure, they may have the majority of users and may be getting new users everyday. But how many of the profiles are actually active? How many blogs are actually seeing a growth in both traffic and following? Back in the day you could publish just about anything and get hundreds of views and followers. Those of us that still use WordPress regularly know this is no longer true. Whether we like to admit it or not, things have changed.

But will WordPress die? That’s the main question we started off with. And personally, I don’t think it will. I don’t think WordPress will ever fully die but I do think that it’s currently stuck in limbo and will continue to do so. With the amount of platforms out there, WordPress has its work cut out. And the fact that for years they’ve done nothing to improve their platform and have a history of treating its users badly does not help their reputation. I firmly believe that WordPress is past its prime. Those of us that love this platform will stick around. But I don’t think it’s ever going to be vibrant as it once was. Like in the 2010’s when I first started blogging.

  1. Well…I hope it doesn’t. I shudder to think of migrating 13 years of posts to somewhere else but…Change is the constant in our world. I enjoyed your thoughts on it Pooja.

    1. Actually, the migration is the easy part. You just have to export and import a file. The hard part is starting a website from scratch. Thanks and I honestly hope WP remains too because I love it here even if the platform isn’t the best.

  2. This is my 16th? year here, if I’m not mistaken, and I’ve never been big on stats or a huge growth or following. I’m here to write and be creative and build community.

I think you put into WordPress what you get out of it and if you’re expecting major growth constantly, that’s a little bit of a way to set yourself up for disappointment. Every major platform is going to go through a downward spiral or periods of lack.

I don’t see this platform ever dying, and if it did, I’d be pretty sad.

    1. I agree, I think all platforms have their ups and downs. Look at Instagram for example, at one point it was so popular and now it’s barely a shell of what it once was. All platforms go through that. I think as long as we keep using WordPress it’ll stick around. At least, that’s my hope.

  3. I hope WP doesn’t die, Pooja, but I agree that this platform is well past it’s prime. I stick around because I’ve been here for years and have so many friends here. My site isn’t popular, changes are needed but I don’t know what to do.

    Do you remember Blogger?
That is still around which is really amazing because the service sucks. And, it’s also where I began blogging many years ago. My current site has been on the internet since 2016 but other blogs I’ve had go much further back. Great post, Pooja!

    1. I hope so too. I’ve very much enjoyed my time here so far thanks to this lovely community and I think we’ve all become quite friendly with many other bloggers. So it would suck to see it go. But I don’t think it will, I think as long as we’re around WP will be around too.

I used to have a blog on Blogger, can’t believe that platform is still around. It honestly sucked so much I almost gave up on blogging lol.

      Thanks!

      1. Mines still exist, it just a dragging brand. lol. I use to doing weekly post of newsletters there, so special reasons.

      2. Blogger does suck! 😂 I love the wonderful community on WP! I have so many friends around the world thanks to this. Including you, Pooja! 🥰☺️❤️

        1. Thanks, I’m glad we were able to connect thanks to blogging and hopefully will continue to do so because I don’t think WP is going anywhere any time soon 😊❤️

          1. It’s wonderful to know you, Pooja! 🥰☺️❤️

            1. Right back at you, you’re a lovely person ❤️😊

              1. 🥰🥰

  4. Makes me wonder if I should keep blogging or not. I love my blog, but I do not have a huge following (though I do love that some people have stuck with me so long!!!) I wonder if it’s worth the money I pay. Honestly, there is a lot on which to part with my hard-earned dollars, but I do so love to write, even if it’s been a bit less frequent these days!

    1. I think in the end it depends on your priorities with blogging. If you hope to grow a lot really fast then WP isn’t the best. But if you just want to share your content I think it’s very worth it since the community and people here are really sweet and interactive. You’re one of those awesome people and I’d hate to see you leave!

      1. Awwww…thanks. I do enjoy the community here (especially you! and a few other choice bloggers) I have never been about growing super fast. I want to write, as my late teacher asked me to do. I will honor her memory here and leave the rest to God. Thanks, Pooja! Your insight is very welcome. 🤗

        1. Keep writing, you’re doing great at it! 🤗

          1. Thank you! Louise would be so pleased!

            1. You’re very welcome and I’m sure she would be very proud of all you’ve accomplished and will accomplish in the future!

  5. I think they need a swift kick in the you know what. I definitely feel it slowing down and so much has changed in just the four years that I’ve been here.

    1. Same here. Growth and engagement are definitely down but it’s still not enough for me to quit blogging. Unless there’s an amazing platform that’s significantly better than WP….lol

    2. Lol, I think they’ve had a kick recently because they’ve actually been slightly better which is shocking. True, so much has changed and growth/traffic is definitely much slower. Especially after Blaze was introduced.

      1. Yes, as soon as Blaze was introduced I saw a huge slow down as well.

  6. WordPress.com i can see going down the chute, but I can tell yeah theres a bunch of people using it on thier own servers, I totally get that too cause spending a certain amount per year for. Aweb host and domain name and having all the functionality vs having to pay monthly for the same deal with only the add ons they allow.. its a big difference and to tell ya the truth, im seriously thinking about the move myself.

    1. The only problem I see with that is that you won’t have Jetpack and your posts won’t show up on Reader, which means minimal engagement. Engagement is bad as it is on here, let’s not make it worse.

That being said, I totally get where you’re coming from and sometimes having your own server makes much more sense. Honestly looked into this last year and couldn’t justify taking that route and losing the Reader/Jetpack. And paying extra for Jetpack made no sense.

      1. From what i understand you can still use jetpack with it, as for how it works with it, i wont know til i try it

        1. If you use Jetpack as a Plugin it will work. There’s a subscription to use Jetpack. Although I find WordPress plans extremely overpriced for what you get, at least it includes Jetpack. That alone is enough for me to keep the WordPress plan.

          1. There are a few tricks and treats around the costs. 🙂

            1. Yes, if you know where to look 😅

    2. I think it’s overall cheaper to self-host and you get a lot more control so I think it’s a great option for those who are more tech savvy. And as long as you use the free Jetpack plugin you’ll be fine and still be a part of the community.

      1. Kinda my thoughts as well. Kinda like now, i have owned my own domain now for about 12 years and i just point it here as a permanent fwd but i still have the wordpress url here because that is a paid service to change that, the only thing that does is make you have multiple urls instead of just 1.. not a big deal really.

        1. Oh I see, yeah I guess that makes sense if you own your domain but don’t want to upgrade to a paid plan.

  7. Also as a side note, i e been told my blog doesnt load anymore.. guess its back to the drawing board yet again

    1. Yeah, I keep trying to visit your site but it just doesn’t load. I don’t know what the issue is but I noticed that too..

      1. Tried to get in today and edit it as well and aparently i cont do that now either, it throws up an error. Try using the whysprs.com url and see if loads that way.

        1. No, that URL isn’t loading either.

          1. Yeah i see that, says it takes 4 seconds to actually load and is timed out before that.

          2. Ok removed the items that I can change, the rest is via wordpress side

            1. Unfortunately it’s still not loading. I would recommend contacting WordPress to fix the issue.

      2. Ran a diagnostic, its showing that scripts running for adds, my logo and the social media info is causing it, will try and get what i can remove on my side and then see if it loads correctly.

        1. Some of the widgets have been retired now and only block widgets work so that may be why.

  8. I think it won’t. At least for now. The reason is that I don’t find another blogging platform which is user friendly, free backed by larger community developers. If in a few years, a platform emerges that is better than WordPress, there might be a decline in its use by the blogging community.
I know WordPress has been used for building company websites, including the commercial sites from which they sell products. Even I deployed WordPress on a server and built websites using WordPress, we had to abandon as it’s hard to maintain the plugins and components developed by community developers. There are pros and cons to having a community supported content management system. The negative aspect of it is that no control on inter plugin compatibility. It’s impossible to do so when you have thousands of them.

    1. True, I think mainly the reason people stick with WordPress is because it’s the lesser evil and most other platforms out there have issues too.

  9. I don’t think it will die but I do think it will be less used.

    1. Yeah, I think we already see a drop and it will continue to see a decrease but I don’t think it will ever completely shut down. At least not any time soon.

  10. I think change is inevitable. But as long as it’s profitable, it will endure. But this has given me pause for thought. Where will I be hosting my writing a year from now? Two years?…
I need to start planning for that possibility of WP changing or coming to an end.

    1. I agree, change will always happen. I just wish they took what users have to say into account. Not saying they have to implement every suggestion but at least listen and implement the good ideas.
Yes, especially if you plan to self-host I would recommend doing so as fast as possible because moving large amounts of content is harder and you may end up losing some stuff. If you plan to move with you content, do it while you don’t have too much content.

      1. thank you for the advice. I do think I may need to move soon.

        1. No problem, I’ve been having a lot of issues recently with WordPress and have learnt the hard way that it’s easier to move with less content.

  11. And that’s how you get a shout out from the finest blogger 😛

WordPress will die when it will stop giving.
Like now things are all made paid. I mean you use blaze to promote stuff and things like that. It has to be easy.

A lot of people are using it a place to share their thoughts, but they can do it elsewhere too. I mean, they need a reason to stick here.
The community is of intellectual and it’s beautiful.
Rn, what’s needed is more ease and more attractive options.
I’ve seen people who post poems and stuff are doing just fine, but I’m sure they’ll be glad if they can have something extra.

    1. Lol, happy to give credit where credit is due 😊

I think as long as the higher paying sites use WordPress it’ll be around. Like the “enterprise” sites as they make a lot of money from them. As soon as profits dry out, they’ll stop caring.

I agree, this community is awesome. I’ve seen nothing like it on any other platform. I hope it doesn’t get destroyed due to WP’s carelessness.

      1. As someone commented here
Maybe wp will turn out to be like “blogger”

There are so many new options and so much ease with them. Wp needs to make experience better.

I don’t know about wp, but bloggers like you make my experience on wp better. 😊🙏🏼

        1. Thanks so much 😊 Actually from my recent experiences it seems WP is at least trying to improve that and listen to users before implementing changes. I think that’s a great first step on their part.

          1. All I hope that things goes well

I don’t want Wp to die anyway 😅.

We need you as a voice for the people.
            “Champion of the bloggers”

            1. I hope so too but after my meeting I saw that they really are trying to be better which gave me hope!

  12. Death knell for WP night be true . Yet its not going to come so early, hope they do what is needed in time to keep improving and surviving

    1. Yeah, I think it’s still going to be around for a long time.

  13. I tend to wonder how have the users of WordPress changed? How has the market changed?
What do either of these two need and cam the data farmed by WordPress aid them in the next stages?

    1. Yes, I think the market has definitely changed a lot recently. I think about a lot of these things too. Especially about the information farmed by WP.

      1. Change is the one thing that never changes. Also, essentially a lot of all this is communications. The bells and whistles may change, but principles before personalities. I have seen so many hospitality businesses be too snobby about who needs their services. A lot of empty shopfronts in this city now. I am looking around now in this country for people who might have need for what I have and found answers to. I think there will always be readers, and some lawyers who aren’t charging for their reading awesomeness after the 11am liquid lunch each day 😀 😉 😄

        1. Haha agreed. And absolutely, when businesses get snobby they fail pretty fast.

          1. Market research is so important. I agree so much with some business people whom I think I don’t like. Business is like nature… their laws are impartial. We all want to do things.. but desire can starve us. We need to follow the Rolling Stones and gauge the landscape… to get what we need. Please stop me now from going on about Jagger and Richards 😄

            1. Absolutely, I always tell people to do their research no matter what niche they’re in. If they want to run a successful business they need to know what their potential customers want/need.
              Haha true 😅

  14. Interesting question. For starters, when the renewal is due next month I will be downgrading to the Personal Plan. This past year was great because I had a discount for 50% off but this year none of the coupon codes worked so I have no choice but to downgrade. All I need is block editing.

I really really don’t want to quit blogging and move elsewhere. Everyone is flip-flopping around from one platform to the next and it’s so exhausting. This is why I kept Twitter/X despite it being a dying platform. I absolutely refuse to pack my bags and move. Call me stubborn, but I just want a permanent home on the interwebs.

    1. I completely understand, I think the Personal Plan is way better if you’re not getting a discount for your current plan. The amounts WordPress is charging at the moment for paid plans is crazy to me. I don’t even know why they’re charging so much especially for Premium and Business when the features are so little. And the themes suck so much.

I hope you don’t quit blogging. But I may be bias saying that since I love your blog. It’s one of my favourites and I would hate to see you go. I hope WP improves as I would love a forever home here too.

      1. Haha don’t even get me started on the themes. WP makes it sound like the themes are so great when they’re not. 7 years later and I’m still using a free, expired theme! 😂

        1. For real, I’ve been using this theme for years! 😅

      2. Part 2: Aww, thank you so much! I’m very happy that you enjoy reading my blog! I have no plans to leave blogging. Seeing how volatile social media platforms are, I don’t feel confident about sticking to any particular platform at the moment. The only one I have some control over is my blog. Twitter/X, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Medium, etc. could disappear tomorrow but our blogs aren’t going to disappear overnight. Unless we have a blackout and everyone loses access to electricity and the internet. 😂🤣

        1. You’re totally welcome! I agree, social media just pales in comparison to blogging. It’s such an awful place and I would never want to spend as much time there as I do blogging. Lol, yes unless the world has a blackout our blogs are here to stay 😅

  15. As much as I know change is all there is, I would be sad if it disappeared even with all it’s faults and issues it has! So PLEASE WP make some of the changes we all need to keep goin an thrive💕

    1. Same here, WP has it’s issues but I would be very sad to see it go. Fingers crossed they get their stuff together 🤞🏽

      1. You of all people know! I’m hopeful as well!!!
        😃

  16. with the less amount of time personally here on WP in comparison to many others who are counting their years… I sincerely hope that the changes that come will be of a positive nature.
Thanks for sharing (and scaring 😋), Pooja. 🤍

    1. Thanks so much. Haha don’t worry, I don’t think WP is going away in our lifetime 😅

      1. *sigh of relief*😁

        always a pleasure 🤍

  17. “And my prediction is that it’s most likely going to decrease especially because for a long time WordPress has almost completely ignored any input from their users.” Your prediction can be true but I feel those who wish to read and write daily content will keep arriving at the platform. Thinking of becoming popular via these platform is certainly another view point of ours!

    1. Thanks so much. I think those that are committed to blogging rather than growing with definitely stick around!

      1. Well said correctly!

  18. I am seeing growth in my blog stats. But the viewership is definitely down. I think this new “blaze” is the cause. They want us to spend money to promote our content.
    But overall I’m happy here.

    1. It’s the same for me (and many other bloggers) views and growth in general has decreased from what it was prior to Blaze being introduced which sucks but I’m just happy to have this platform too. It’s fine if we don’t get as many views/follows as long as we enjoy ourselves.

      1. Yes indeed. That is the main aim- to enjoy, keep ourselves busy mentally and develop friendships.

        1. Exactly, I think with that aim you’ll probably get the most out of your blogging experience.

          1. Thanks Pooja. It’s working well so far 💖

            1. I’m glad to hear that 😊

              1. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

  19. Interesting question. Since the change from Twitter to X, I’ve lost hundreds of followers because many have left the platform or become inactive. I think some form of blogging will continue to exist in the future because not everyone wants to create videos, share photos, or create podcasts. Some people just like to write. I started my blog to promote my website but at the moment I’m not looking for clients so blogging is not high on my list.

    1. Yes, my following went down on Twitter/X as well when the change happened. It was annoying but it is what it is. I think if it doesn’t affect your income that much the changes don’t matter too much. I think those that want to continue creating content will.

  20. Great food for thought. As long as WordPress makes money for someone I think it will be around in some form.

    1. I think so too, that’s exactly what I think as well. Especially as long as its Enterprise Plan is used as that makes the most money.

  21. I’m losing interest in WordPress and blogging. My traffic suddenly dropped to a fifth because of something WordPress did in the background. I started blogging in order to publicise my books but I don’t think it really does that. I got further into blogging for fun and to make valid political/social comment but the diminishing return ………..

    1. I understand your frustrations, my traffic has decreased too after Blaze was introduced and it’s been annoying.

  22. Pretty much agree with you. Until some other more responsive platform comes along, us bloggers are stuck here. And that means WP has a built in base they can use and abuse.

I also agree that a lot of bloggers have turned to social media instead of blogging and that just saddens me. But there’s nothing I can do about it, so I tend to ignore it so I don’t get depressed about the fact.

    1. Absolutely, the thing is that we need them just as they need us. For now, we’re stuck here until something better comes along (if it ever does as I feel every platform has some issues or the other).

Personally, I feel like social media can never be the same as blogging. It sucks to lose bloggers to social media.

      1. Yeah, nothing beats writing ideas out.

  23. Oh..I so relate with this. The change is evident but I think people are still making the choice, same as me. I actually came back to WordPress this year because there’s nothing to read on other platforms. I hope WordPress keeps improving and growing.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, many changes have been made and not always for the better. I agree, I hope WP keeps improving because I would hate to see this platform go.

  24. Maybe not die, but they certainly could price themselves out of existence or into a merger, which is what Netflix and Amazon seem to be determined to do. Netflix started at $5/month with no ads and an okay catalog. They are raising their prices again, which has become an annual thing, and they dictate the resolution and how many screens can be in use at one time ON TOP of forcing ads on you that aren’t skippable. They promote their “original” movies and series, but don’t get attached to either because they’ll remove or cancel them on a whim even if they are popular. I’ve seen a lot of people stating they will be canceling. Meanwhile, Amazon is raising prices, hosting even more third-party sellers, not honoring their 2-day shipping for members, and their Prime membership is nearing $200/year. When I first subscribed, I paid $76/year. They’ve added ads, which is double dipping, as Prime Video is included in the Prime membership. For the music, also included in the membership, you can no longer play a song you want; Amazon will play a song similar to what you’re requesting unless you get Amazon Music Unlimited for $9/month on top of what you pay for Prime. The music thing was the last straw for me. I’ll be replacing all my Alexas with Google Nests. I’m an iPhone and iPad user, and while Apple’s blatant greed is disgusting, they are upfront about it and not manipulating their services. They are like, “Hey, we’re super greedy. If you feel our products are worth it, stick around!”

    1. Absolutely, I always see big platforms continuously increase their prices once they get popular. It’s the same with social media platform that have begun offering paid verification etc. They know we rely on them and that they’ll make money off us either way.

  25. just stop with the unwanted changes please.

  26. Most of the new users are bots.

Is our attention span actually getting shorter? That’s a thing people say, but I think it’s debatable.

    1. Agreed, there are literally so many bots on here now.

I don’t know about everyone else but my attention span was messed for a while and I had to stop using social media so much and read more lol.

      1. Reading definitely helps.

        1. It does, my concentration is much better now.

  27. Interesting points, Pooja. If you ask me though, it won’t die because of lack of interest. It’ll perish because of AI being abused on the platform. WP doesn’t act as it’s akin to killing the golden goose, anyway.

(On a side note, I remember doing an article for my day job that centered on Meta’s Threads. Apparently, the platform has a hard time attracting new users — with the total user base just slightly ahead of Tumblr. It was once popular, but Tumblr — which is a sister platform of WP under Automattic — is now at rock bottom.)

(Will WP go down that path? Only time will tell…)

    1. Thanks so much. I think so too. AI is a big issue right now and I feel like people aren’t taking it seriously enough. Yes, it does have some positive aspects but I also feel like it needs to be monitored so it is not misused.

I miss the days when Tumblr was the “it” platform. They really destroyed something wonderful. One can only hope the same doesn’t happen to WP.

  28. Things are always changing. Yes it will change, so will everything else. So why worry? 🤣😎🙃

    1. Lol true, no need to worry about what we can’t change!

  29. I think that WordPress should look into the issues and concerns of its most used blogs and to seriously consider implementing some of the changes that are expressed. I also agree that it will never die fully but will become not as popular for new blogs and bloggers

    1. I agree, I think they need to put some more effort into helping users and being better at it. Even if they don’t implement every suggestion at least take it into account before dismissing it as they usually do.

  30. A lot of things have changed negatively in wordpress lately, but I hope it doesn’t die and things become better.

    1. True, there have been some good and some bad changes recently. I find many of the changes so unnecessary. I hope so too, to be honest I don’t think it will ever fully die but maybe just become very unpopular.

      1. Totally agree. That’s what I do think too

  31. It’s a shame blogging is becoming less popular. People definitely prefer short-form videos, especially with you having mentioned that a lot of people now have shorter attention spans. It’s actually a reason why I’m trying to limit my time on TikTok 😅 but people will always want a variety of content types and some types work better than others depending on the info being shared.

Hopefully WordPress won’t die. I’m so used to it now and the thought of having to jump ship is overwhelming.

    1. I agree, I also had to take time off social media and especially TikTok for that reason lol 😅 I think we’re just used to seeing so much content so quickly that blogging seems like a task to some especially those that aren’t used to it.

I don’t think it’ll die any time soon or even ever as long as we continue using it. I think as long as there are users it will stay around.

  32. I don’t think WordPress will die but I feel they should be more transparent. I subscribe to their newsletters which helps me understand the reasons for what they do such as updates, new versions, and new themes. Otherwise, not much of what they do will make sense because we are writers, and not programmers. I just had an issue with WP removing the theme I was using, which was a new FSE theme. It seems they could have let the users of that theme know it was being removed. In fact, I wrote about it this morning. https://amanpan.blog/2023/10/05/wordpress-theme-tenaz/

    1. I agree, WordPress has a history of not being transparent with users or gaslighting users about certain things to make themselves look better. I’m sorry they retired the theme without informing you or those using them. That really sucks and will definitely check out your post about it. The reason I hesitate to use FSE themes is because I’m not good with technology and it can be a bit more work compared to using the themes WP offers.

      1. It has been most frustrating, Pooja. This mess happened while others were responding to my prompt! I have switched to another FSE theme and hope it doesn’t have any issues. Fingers crossed.

        1. Wow, that’s annoying. I hope they start letting users know when they’re going to retire their themes just so we can be prepared and switch before that happens.

          1. Absolutely, Pooja!

  33. One never knows. We’re some of the ones that make the choices.

    1. True, you never know and it often depends on users.

      1. Yes. Seems true of anything. On the plus side, that one thing makes us consumers and gives some power to the hands of the people.

        1. Yes, very true. It helps give us some power.

  34. gloom! doom! and despair. gupta s still pissed at wordpress hangin there. nooooooooooooooooooooooo warren no! ah pfft on it.

    1. Lol, more irritated than pissed!

      1. as per dirty warren. tannebaum knew. no finer prosecutor than butch karp!

  35. You raise good questions, as you tend to do. I went with WordPress because it showed up first on a search. As you say, there were limited options before. Enthusiastically, I got involved for free–made a site, took a couple of workshops. I guessed that the site prospered financially through combined advert. revenue with word-of-mouth. Now I feel outside the process and preferences of the site because I don’t pay money for things there. The changes I’m enduring are better for paying clients, while at first I thought I was simply having few choices regarding what I could do. Though still I had good quality of service. If other free-users also feel disenchanted, then I wonder how much base WordPress will lose and will it die. Sigh. Thanks for taking part in all this.

    1. Thanks so much. I joined WP because I used to be on Blogger and hated it enough to look for a different platform to use. When I first started WP was fantastic and offered many things for free. Unfortunately, I have noticed that this has changed over the last few years. And the customer service has changed too. We used to have the chat options even with free plans and now you only get it with certain paid ones and even with that they don’t always respond.

  36. Pooja, you are always right, but we can’t do anything about WordPress because we have no alternative. Thanks for sharing such an excellent topic with us

    1. Thank you so much and yes unfortunately so 😐 Thanks 😊

      1. My pleasure, Pooja. Thank you for sharing this post😊🥰🌟🙏

        1. Always a pleasure 😊

  37. I sure hope not. I love the platform, despite its glitches and bugs. Every platform seems to evolve/change – in competition for consumers, i.e. $$$s. People come and go depending upon their own desires and needs.
Wordpress is for people who like/need to express themselves by writing. However, it is abused by people selling stuff, sometimes useful and sometimes not.
Here are some of the blogs I follow: Lifesfinewhine; Why evolution is true; US Review of books; the lone cactus; Confessions of a conservative atheist; Aging capriciously; Logos con carne; Got Altitude; Self aware patterns; strikeouts & sprinkles; Read betwixt words … and more.
The WP algorithm hooked me up with blogs(ers). Are they ‘friends’? Not in the real world, but … ?
If WP goes away? That would be tragic.

    1. I understand. I think I’ve met some lovely and interesting people thanks to WordPress and I would be very sad if I couldn’t read the blogs I generally read on a regular basis. Personally, I think WP isn’t going anywhere as long as they’re making a profit. Which it seems they’re still doing at the moment.

  38. Good topic. People come and go on every platform. WordPress has a big community and power more of the web than other platforms, as well own Tumblr (do people remember the tumblr craze?).

But I feel WordPress has the option to create an existence and blog in the form of big area to be more discoverable via SEO. But also it’s a home you own, rather than social media that can delete you based on there terms and service without notice.

Lastly if everyone think of WordPress as a “Online Property” like Real Estate and call it a Website rather than blog, the Real Estate will carry more values to the owner and will be a great place come home and invite guests and family over. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. I agree, I think WordPress powers a pretty big chunk of sites at the moment. And Tumblr, I miss when that was the “it” platform.

I think WordPress is the best platform to create an SEO friendly site. Although it has its issues I think the platform is great for SEO.

True, blogs are much more permanent than social media pages. It’s a forever home for many.

  39. Great Title Pooja

    1. Thanks so much.

  40. Yeah word press is not going to die. While my current website is new, its not the first time using wordpress and creating a site, however the popularity is on the decline. Reminds of facebook, its definitely not popular as it once was and is facing more competition with the uprising of other / new social media platforms. Which is the same with wordpress, there is more competition with other platforms vs when wordpress was in its prime and was one of a kind, like netflix but now has more competition. With that being said wordpress should be listening to its users, doing its best to resolve issues and make proper changes or new features that will enchance a users experience. I believe they can, but its a question if customer service will and continue to help, as you recently mentioned. Which will contribute to its decline, but not end the platform.

    1. I very much agree with you. I think social media and interactive platforms like this one often see ups and downs because new platforms are being created all the time. I don’t think WordPress will die any time soon or even ever as long as some users still continue to use it. I know some of us plan to be here for a long time or even permanently. Yes, I think customer service was the biggest issue with WordPress but from my recent experiences it seems like they’re trying really hard to improve it.

  41. If WP dies, that will be the end of blogging for me. I do not have the time nor energy to start all over again on another platform.

    1. I get it, it’s a lot of work to start from scratch elsewhere. The good news is that I don’t think WP will die any time soon.

  42. I’ve seen a number of blogging platforms come and go commencing with the pioneer Yahoo360, then Multiply and so on. I think WordPress is stable for the present in spite of them continuously tinkering with the site. It’s more for people with a publishing bent now and those who want to make it into a daily journal will move on to other places like Threads and Instagram. I was one of the first on UTube which is now YouTube and played with that for a while but lost interest though its a great place to get a wealth of information even though unfortunately it is being infiltrated with political entities feeding us fake news along with some very useful stuff.

    1. I agree, I think WP will survive. I’ve also noticed recently that they’ve been trying to make changes with how they connect with users and I think this will help them improve much more.
True, YouTube can be useful depending on what content you stream.

  43. DANIEL PLUS LAUREN has been on WordPress for 7 years.  I know the drill that if you want to SEO your site, you have to do it through plugins.

I don’t know how WordPress VIP works, I do know it can be as high as $25,000.00 a year to have, where my hope is that SEO is included if I only have 1 site, or that my site operates at its fastest.

I use to have the business plan, but then went to the free plan since I wasn’t working at the time.

But now I’ve got a bigger question, what other web hosts could I take my site to, who have better reach, faster downloads, greater SEO’s, and maximum reach with visitors?

And if WordPress did shut down, or get bought out, is it possible for my site to be bought out?

Also, what’s your current web host?

    1. Actually, I know a lot of people think that plugins are necessary but the truth is your site can be very SEO friendly even without plugins. A number of my clients have the free plan but I’ve had no issue making their sites SEO friendly. Sure, there are some setbacks but it doesn’t make a huge difference. They still get a great amount of Search Engine traffic, an increase in traffic overall, more followers etc.

Yes, the enterprise plan on WordPress is very pricy but worth it for bigger companies etc.

There are a number of hosting companies such as WPX which would be my first choice for self-hosting especially as they have 24/7 customer support available. However, instead of self-hosting I always suggest the Business Plan instead if you are very tech savvy as at the end of the day it would be more affordable and it would save you a lot of time. Since the Business Plan comes with a chat support option you basically don’t have to deal with the majority of the technical issues on your own and WP takes care of things like security etc. Whereas with self-hosting you have to deal with everything, make sure your site is secure from hackers which means updating plugins constantly etc. It’s a lot of work. I self-hosted for a bit but ended up moving back to wordpress.com from wordpress.org. However, if you are good with technology self-hosting would be a great option and I recommend WPX as a host.

If WP did shut down or get bought out (which I don’t think is a big possibility) I don’t think it would effect your site that much since usually when a platform is bought out the users still have control over their sites. Unless you choose to sell your site privately. If WP shuts down you will most likely still have access to your data (posts) and can start somewhere else without having to start from scratch.

Currently, my site is hosted by WordPress. I’ve tried self-hosting but found it to be too much work.

Hope that helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask or email.

      1. If I stay with WP, is Commerce plan good? Do I need an investor at this point for VIP so I can see substantial numbers?

        1. I think if you decide to stay with WP, a business plan would be best. If you’re looking for substantial numbers it depends more on your site and your SEO etc rather than what plan you’re on. You can pay a million dollars and still not see substantial traffic if your site isn’t SEO friendly. My suggestion would be to upgrade to a Business Plan and spend some time making your site as SEO friendly as possible. I can already see a few issues on your site that would affect how much traffic you’re getting. And then invest the money you would have used for the VIP plan in backlinks and ads on all search engines. That will get you thousands of views daily and you won’t need to spend as much as you would on the VIP plan.

  44. I too noticed that now blog traffic has decreased. Maybe it is because I am not as active as I was when I started the blog. I also noticed that new bloggers have no interest in reading, but they expect likes and follows from other bloggers. One reason is that, nowadays people have no patience.

In my opinion, WordPress is running due to old bloggers. Unfortunately, many old bloggers have either stopped blogging or are not active much now.

Changes in the name of the WordPress app and other changes are also the reasons, bloggers have lost interest in WordPress.

    1. I think the more active you are the more traffic you see. However, there has also been an overall decrease right now. True, a lot of new bloggers don’t understand the “give and take” aspect of blogging.

I think that’s true. A lot of why WP is still running is because of the older bloggers. Many of the new ones are bots or leave in a few days/weeks as they see no growth.

True, some of the changes have made it harder to navigate the platform and it’s become something bloggers prefer not to deal with.

    2. I need my site to generate substantial numbers, I could upgrade to Business, Commerce, or find an investor to help with VIP. CBS, DISNEY, and such have used VIP. Do I need to look at other places with better SEO reach?

      1. No, WP is actually one of the best platforms for SEO friendly sites. It has a lot of SEO options and if done correctly you can have a very SEO friendly website.

        1. My best feeling is sticking with WP, and upgrading to Business, with SEO tools I can add or invest in.

Plus, advertising and back links an all search engines was very helpful by you.

I would love to learn more about the few issues you see on my site, I’m at danielpluslauren@gmail.com.

          1. Yes, I think that would be the best way forward for you. You’ll get much more growth that way and end up spending a lot less.

            Sure, I’ll email them shortly.

  45. Amazing topic, and I hope it doesn’t happen. We have covered a very long journey, may be about more than 10-12 years with WordPress. We can do almost everything with it and it is improving everyday, even today.

    1. Thanks so much. I agree, I think WP has been making efforts to improve. I don’t think it’s going away any time soon.

  46. Thanks for this post and all your fascinating observations, Pooja! I’d agree that in my three years I’ve seen a decline in service but recently it seems more like WP is listening. No doubt they are aware of and hopefully working to address the trends. I am however a bit shocked at how many posts that are clearly not original work get som many likes and follows; maybe it relates to the attention span issue you mentioned… people reading short snappers instead of investing their time in quality content.

    1. Thanks so much! True, over the last four years or so their service has been quickly declining but this year they seem to be making an effort to do better which is great because I would hate to see this platform get destroyed.
So true, and there are so many bot profiles these days that also have so many followers I’m so surprised.

      1. I’ve noticed lately a few likes come from accounts that list an Amazon item webpage as their website. 🧐

        1. Yeah, I’ve had a couple of those too and it’s definitely bots lol.

          1. Some people have too much time on their hands! 🙄

            1. Lol, agreed. Can’t believe such accounts aren’t being removed though 🫤

  47. i think so. day-by-day, their new features getting complicated and demotivating to be in this space as it consuming so much time

    1. It’s true, their new changes have made the platform a lot harder to navigate.

      1. I’ve spent hours to get things fix. to the worse, they’ve started to force to hc a paid plan to display the purchased domain. no alert was made. without paid plan, you cnt do anything with a purchased domain.

        1. Yeah, unfortunately you need to purchase a plan to get rid of the “wordpress” part of your domain. I know a lot of bloggers don’t like that.

  48. Personally, I don’t think it will die because there are new bloggers who are using this platform. I can say that it is slower when it comes to loading a page to write. It isn’t as fast as it was when I joined. There are not enough themes to really choose from to make your blog look how you want it to look. If they would have listened long ago when everyone was asking questions about things getting better, it wouldn’t be how it is today. This is my opinion about it. Maybe if they would improve on the free plans, and let those plans be just as good as the paid plans, people would stay and not leave.

    1. I agree with you. I think had they listened a few years ago when the platform started going downhill a lot of changes could have been made and many bloggers who left would have stayed. But still, I think it’s better late than never. I hope they take the time to listen now and take what we have to say into account.

  49. I like WordPress (JetPack) and hope it stays around for many years.

    1. Yeah, I think it’ll be around for a long time.

  50. I am getting so beefed off with word press that I have moved myself to pastures new.

    1. I understand, I’ve had my share of frustrations with it and I understand why you decided to move. Many others have too.

  51. Well I hope it doesn’t WordPress is a great platform for a new comer like me

    1. Personally, I don’t think it will at least not any time soon.

  52. As a WordPress Developer and a Tool Tester, I’m rest assured that WordPress isn’t going to die by any means.

Attn: Majority of those web building platforms are being hyped beyond their capacity; and this is due to their Affiliate Programs.

But WordPress on the other hand is being promoted by the loyal users who really enjoy it’s workflow.

P.S. WP is not going to die. More and more platforms will keeping showing up, but the great minds behind WP aren’t sleeping too.

    1. I agree, to be honest I haven’t seen a single platform that I like better than WordPress. I know that WP has it’s issues but so do other platforms. I think WP is going to be around for a long time but the traffic and activity here has decreased significantly. Compared to when I first started blogging. The issue that a lot of people have with WP is the lack of proper customer support but it seems they’ve been trying to improve that which is great.

  53. That was a good post Pooja. The other writing platform I use, substack, seems easier to use but WordPress has more appearance appeal. So, I can’t say that WordPress would just disappear but the online world is always updating and changing.

    1. Thanks so much. I agree, things are changing in the line world. I don’t think WP will ever die or fully disappear. I think it’ll just get less popular over time.

  54. Lately Facebook and Instagram have been receiving a lot of negative publicity. Personally, I can’t stand Instagram because of all the videos. Particularly now since the app no longer has the capability to choose wether to auto play videos or not. I believe Facebook was taken over a long time ago and that it is nothing more than a tool for psychological warfare. I don’t think it’s a conspiracy by ‘evil’ people or anything like that. However I believe that Mark knew exactly what he was doing when people’s information was stolen. Now I think he has lost control of the platform and he is simply the ‘spokesperson’. I still have an account but I’m very cautious with it because it’s just so unhealthy and can become toxic to one’s mental health very quickly. The reason being is because it doesn’t encourage one to THINK the way WordPress does. If anything, it dumbs people down. It’s so easy to use that even a kindergartner could figure it out (and they do I’m sure). It’s so boring that it’s mind numbing. Furthermore, if you use it often, you’ll find yourself associating with people who you would never associate with in real life: drug addicts, perverts, cons. So I feel like things are going to turn around for WordPress very soon. But even if it doesn’t become popular again, I will probably still be using the platform for the rest of my life.
    Great post, Pooja!

    1. Thanks so much for your very thoughtful comment and I very much agree with you. I think none of the social media platforms I’m on have even compared to WordPress. Like you said, it doesn’t encourage on to think and grow. It just messes up your attention span and can be so incredibly toxic. I don’t even read the comments on social media anymore because they’re so hateful for no reason. I’m with you, even if WP is never as popular as it once was I’m still sticking around since I genuinely enjoy the experience of blogging.
      Thanks!
