The Plight Of A Writer

Something Old, Something New, Nothing Borrowed | The Plight Of A Writer | To Be A Writer

Staring at the computer screen

All out of words

Staring at the bowl

All out of snacks

Staring at the phone

All out of ideas

Staring at the computer screen once more

All out of battery

Oh well

I guess I’ll just start writing that book tomorrow

About “The Plight Of A Writer”:

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind… wait sorry, wrong post. Do you ever feel like you were born to be a writer but your brain refuses to cooperate? Because I do. I’m pretty sure my brain hates me but also loves me and now I think I’m in a toxic relationship with myself. This is my cry for help actually. Just kidding.

But on a serious note, I’ve been doing a lot more writing lately. I’m working on multiple books at the moment and for a while it was going great. However, for the last few days I’ve gotten a bit of writers block which is so annoying. I’m still writing but it doesn’t feel good enough so I go back and erase it and start over and then the same thing happens. It’s just a horrible cycle. Why am I telling you this? Because it’s LifesfineWHINE. Where else am I going to whine if not here? So there it is, the plight of a writer.

Are you a writer? Have you experienced writers block or a sort of dry spell in your writing? If so, how do you combat that? Let me know in the comments section below. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. I love your first paragraph, Pooja, fun! 😂❤️ How can you write multiple books at once? Amazing. 😊

    1. Thank you, haha! I think writing multiple books is the best way to write because if I take a break from one I can work on the other. It’s never boring 😊

      1. If it works, go for it! ☺️

        1. 😊❤️

  2. Sounds like a good reason to get extra sleep!

    1. Off to take a nap lol!

      1. No no, I wanted to be helpful so I napped for you. 😂

        1. No wonder I feel so well rested today 😅

  3. Embracing the dance with the elusive muse, huh? Your words might be on a snack break, but they’ll come back full of literary flair. It’s just a brief intermission in the grand play of your creativity. Keep the pen twirling, and tomorrow’s book will be worth the wait! 📝✨

    1. I sure am. Yes, the words have decided to take a little break but I’m sure they will return soon 😊

    1. Thank you.

  4. You are too much. Out of snacks sounds like a nightmare, was this a spooky poem? LOL.

    1. Yes, it’s a horror poem lol- no snacks is truly a nightmare 😅

  5. Writer’s block is a real thing! Take a short break from writing and the inspiration will come back.

    1. Absolutely, I’ve been taking a break and hopefully the words will be back soon.

      1. They will when your mind is relaxed

        1. Yeah, I think calming my mind down a little will help.

          1. Indeed 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  6. Yes, totally relatable. I’m a visual artist, too and it’s basically the same process, different medium. How do I deal with it?
Well, as You stated, I feel it is what I was meant to do, My ‘Life’s Purpose’, if You Will, is to communicate My thoughts to the world. So if I don’t feel I have anything worthy to say, I’ve learned not to force it. Do something else that inspires You and before You know it, Your Mind Will be full of new ideas.
Artists require inspiration or their work seems meaningless. Unless You are under financial pressures or publisher deadlines, just wait until the inspiration finds You again – it always Will.
Looking forward to Your books, I’d love to know what genre You are Writing!
    Blessings,

    1. Absolutely, when it comes to creative endeavours it’s best not to force it and wait for the importation to come which is what I’ve been trying to do. Thanks so much! One is a poetry book, the second is a murder mystery and the third is a YA novel.

      1. Wow, that IS busy!! They all sound fabulous, can’t wait to read them – no pressure. 😉

        1. Yup, very busy and thanks! 😊

  7. lol you ever imagine a whole story in your head and as soon as your finger touches the computer keys the story starts disappearing from your mind? Or have the most adventurous dream , waking up excited to tell someone and as soon as you speak the first word it all vanishes from your thoughts? Love the post!!!

    1. Yes, gosh that happens to me often! Being a writer is fun, isn’t it? Lol. Thanks!

  8. there is always tomorrow, a new dawn and a new day! Rest well my friend! <3

    1. Absolutely, thanks so much!

  9. Yep writer’s block is real. The opposite to that is a sudden inspiration taking you out of the black hole and you have to get it all down while inspiration is present forgetting sleep and food for days. 🙂

    1. Yes, I’ve experienced both writers block and sudden inspiration. It’s all part of being a writer.

  10. As someone who has written a hundred books on a wide range of subjects from Sci-Fi to Rock Music, with Education, Art, Poetry, Atheism and mainstream Literature, I think I might be in a position to comment here.
Writing is an obsessive, lonely, antisocial business. It’s also not great for your physical health. It ends up annoying your friends, whose lives you impinge on, taking an inordinate amount of time. I have been known to write solidly for sixteen hours straight.
If you want to be a writer you just have to write.
When I write a novel I let the ideas flow. I don’t stop to go back and read it. That interferes with the flow. I work on the basis that you get the structure down and then you can go back and work on the flow of sentences, the grammar, punctuation and mechanics of the piece.

    1. Thanks so much for your advice and for sharing your experiences. You have so much experience as a writer so it’s very valuable.

  11. Hey Pooja. I feel your pain. I usually do mini-writing challenges when the writer’s block gets really bad. Like a 7-day challenge of different writing prompts.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, those writing challenges do help us get back into the flow of it sometimes.

  12. Nice poem!! I like how you use “all out of…” throughout the poem.
I have a love and hate relationship with writing. Right now, we’re taking a break. lol

    1. Thanks so much! I think all writers feel that way, it’s a toxic relationship lol. Taking a break right now too but I know the words will be back soon for us both.

  13. Love the poem!!

Charge the battery , eat something healthy and sleep well.

I am not a writer, no matter how hard I try I can’t be one.

But, that’s what I said 2.5 years ago about blogging as well.
    Now, I am ghost-writing a review article.

The best thing about my niche is, I seldom run out of ideas. There are ideas everywhere, but, it’s about connection. If I feel connection with the topic, then only I want to write about it.

About the books, take my money and give me the books. I won’t settle with e-books, make sure you release paperback.

    1. Thanks so much!

I know you think you’re not a writer but to me being a blogger counts as you being a writer 😉

Haha thanks, yes they will most definitely be available in paperback as I prefer that over ebooks as well.

      1. But look at you. You can call yourself a fantastic writer, as you are writing and deleting.

I know it’s annoying. But it’s a natural process. If you can come up with 10 different ways to write/express the thing, then you are a writer, my dear friend.

Keep writing or maybe take a small Kitkat break.
Annoy RG just for the fun and start again 🙂

As you are writing lot. You deserve a pastry or something. Pink forest maybe?

        1. Yes, unfortunately it’s a part of being a writer 😅

Thanks, I had some vegan chocolate which helped 😊

          1. Sweet 🙂
How vegan chocolate is different from regular chocolate?
            Just because of milk?
But then, not every chocolate uses milk, or do they? 🤔

            1. Yeah, no dairy. Most chocolate uses milk or milk products like buttermilk and butter.

              1. Ohhh 🤔
So I guess these non vegan chocolate are more common and vegan chocolates are hard to find.

I think KitKat , Hershey, Cadbury are non vegan

                1. They’re not hard to find, just more expensive lol. So I make them at home, much more affordable and delicious. Yeah, none of those are vegan.

                  1. Ohhhhh
                    Well yes expensive for sure.

Here those are hard to find. And making them at home is a good idea

                    1. Yeah, healthy or vegan stuff is generally more expensive so homemade is best.

                    2. True!
People over here don’t know what’s vegan 😝

Although udaipur is not that small, still. 😝

                    3. Yeah, veganism isn’t popular in Asia even in general 😢

                    4. Yes, this is why it’s hard over here.

There’s a thing called jain diet.
It’s bit different. It includes milk and products.
But exclude non veg, eggs, potatoes, garlic, onion and all the stuff thats grown on ground.
So instead of allu matar, they do allu tamatar 😅

Dude, I forgot what’s the actual topic of this post, sorry 🙈🙊

                    5. No, Jains don’t eat allu cos it’s grown underground. Everyone always forgets that one 😅 Yeah, no underground stuff but if you’re very Jain no leafy vegetables either and no broccoli or cauliflower amongst many other things like no fermented stuff either unless it’s fermented in a very specific way. But most Jains don’t follow the Jain diet these days. The Jain diet is very different from veganism. In veganism you can eat and drink anything as long as it’s plant based including alcohol and underground vegetables. In Jainism, there’s so little you can eat. It’s so restricted.

                    6. And what if the Jain is vegan ?

Nowadays yes, Jain don’t follow jain diet.
We have a jain family in neighbour. They eat before sunset. They don’t eat garlic, carrots, potatoes etc. Such diet is typical.

Again, please tell what was the post about? 😐🙊🙈

We are way off the topic, sorry 😝

                    7. Lol, it’s fine I like this topic more.

It’s not very difficult to be a Jain vegan since the only extra thing you need to cut out is dairy. You can easily find protein substitutes like chickpeas, lentils etc.

It seems your neighbours follow the Jain lifestyle well. Now you have Jain neighbours and a Jain blogging friend 😬

                    8. My neighbourhood is indeed filled with Jain.

Like all the jain lives here majorly. We are only Brahmin family.
We have 4 jain temples here.
2 of them also provide jain food. I’ve tried it, not a fan. As it has no garlic and onion 😅

                    9. That’s really cool. Yeah, I guess since you’re not used to it foods without underground stuff would taste off. Since I grew up eating like that I actually love Jain versions of certain things.

                    10. Ohhh 😀
But still jain food is safe and preferable for all. I mean, everyone can eat it

                    11. I would like to think so, as a Jain 😅

  14. I usually put it away and start something else. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest…

    1. That’s exactly what I’m doing right now but still feeling a little frustrated. A nap may help…

      1. A nap will always help!

  15. Beautifully written words. I like it so much 😊👏👏👏🥰🤗

    1. Thanks so much 🤗😊

      1. 😊🥰🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏🙏💯💯My pleasure, Girl🥰

    1. I sure am writing one!

      1. entitled godka loose in the us!

        1. Perfect, now I have a title!

          1. lady g sounds just right

  17. I get writer’s bock every now and then. If I take a walk, I usually get inspired. 💟

    1. Yeah, clearing your mind and taking a break works. And walks are great for that. Thanks 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  18.     I like your poetic ideas of sleeping while awake in a empty desert without the dessert first before the rain and brainstorm, un-screaming screen losing its words, the drought of snacks, an assault and battery against the camel unwilling to find the oasis, and yet the bookie takes book on a bet for a book written in the sands of time when the reign of rain returns.
Hmm, multiple books you’re writing? I’ve heard the expression that “too many books spoil the pudding” and you just need the right cook.
I don’t have a problem with writer’s block for writing badly. I can easily write badly and write about lint. I have trouble writing as if I were human.

    1. Thanks so much. Same here, I can always write badly but it’s writing well that I have a problem with.

  19. Thanks for the support you’ve shown me as a blogger on WordPress, Pooja. The month of November this year was the novel-writing month, so I returned to writing. An AI service plotted the remainder of my novel after my novel became a short story.

It was mostly an exercise for myself, as I hadn’t given it to anybody to read. I mentioned that I did it to my sister Kaite. Although I had writer’s block for several days in November, my novel was actually inspired by both ideas I had and some ideas I fleshed out with a random generator that I’d found years ago and given a try to see what kind of story it might inspire.

This was long before the days of ChatGPT. There were days when I couldn’t write. Rather than write a minimum of a day’s effort, I thought about composing a short but consistent output every day.

    Take care, Pooja!

    1. Always a pleasure to support other bloggers. Yes, November is the novel writing month and I hoped to get a lot of writing done then but barely did much. That’s so interesting, I’ve never really used AI for writing. Good luck with your novel, I love short stories. Thanks so much!

  20. Keep at it! You’re doing fine. It’s a process, after all. Sometimes taking a break can help.

    1. Thanks so much, yeah I’m taking a break for now and hope to write when the inspiration hits me once more!

  21. Definitely feeling this, Pooja! This is the plight of a writer indeed. Us, with our endless ideas and what seems like a lack of time or an obstruction to overcome. Truly hoping the words flow! <3

    1. Thanks so much! Exactly, it’s like a double edged sword. Hoping the words start flowing soon haha!

  22. You are clever. Also, I believe, a good thinker and a good writer. As for your crisis self-to-self, well, you’ll have to arrange a meeting with yourself maybe also with yourself as a counselor or mediator. As for writing, you know, write. Write crap, trash it. It will get you on to something better that you’ll keep. Actually, I have a major and a lot of research behind what I say. But don’t mind me. And I think you are smart to have made a WHINE blog. Most importantly, get snacks.

    1. Thanks so much. True, I’m hoping to meditate on it tomorrow and get my brain to calm down a little. I’ve been writing and deleting it but I think it’s still better than nothing. Haha yeah, whining always helps and just got some snacks today which should help too.

      1. Yay for snacks! And, you know, that you keep writing. That’s good, too.

  23. Yep, I experience writer’s block all the time. Sometimes the ideas are there but I just can’t find the right words. Luckily there is nothing urgent about my blogs, so I just wait until the right words to pop into my head, then I write 😊.

    1. Exactly, sometimes the right words just don’t come to you. That’s good, I think when you force the words you end up with bad writing. It’s better to wait till you find the right words 😊

  24. Hey Pooja, very relatable actually. Writers block is like constipation, emotionally charged, unable to deliver, hard on yourself. It’s kind of a joke but a serious one. I love joking with a poker face on, sometimes it bites me in the rear, pun intended

    1. Lol, it’s funny because it’s true. It’s totally like constipation and then when the right words find you it’s the opposite…

  25. I have often faced writers’ block. Nothing like an impending deadline to cure it, though! Sometimes you’ve just got to write through it, even though what comes out might be garbage… the good stuff will follow!

    1. Haha true, sometimes I do my best writing when I’m writing something last minute. True, just keep writing till the writers block goes away!

  26. I’ve been experiencing writers block since last month. I thought it wasn’t serious the day I was supposed to edit some drafts I had but couldn’t.

Since the year is coming to an end, am going to take a break from writing. I know that will help.

    1. I’m sorry to hear that. Yes, take a break. That often helps bring the enthusiasm to write back.

  27. I know exactly what you are going through. I cannot get past chapter seven in my second book. Writers block is terrible when you want to write but can’t find the right words to say. Don’t force it, it will come. Writing takes time. I have been thinking about what I want chapter eight to be about, but I haven’t the slightest idea as of yet. Writers block isn’t fun, it slows everything down. So, just take your time, don’t stress. Before you know it all of your books will be finished, and anything else you choose to write about. Just thought I would share that with you. Thanks for sharing your poem, I like it. Have a great weekend.

    1. Yeah, writers block really sucks. It’s like you want to write but just can’t find the words. So sorry you’re struggling with it too. True, it’s best to remain calm and wait till the words come back. I’m sure they will and we’ll finish writing our books in no time. Have a great weekend too.

      1. You are absolutely right. We will keep encouraging one another. 😇

  28. This year has been the same for me as I have written much as compared to previous years. It feels like I have forgotten how to express myself.

    1. Yeah, sometimes we don’t have as much to write and the words just don’t flow.

  29. Sounds quite interesting that you’re writing multiple books at once…Wow 💫

    1. Thanks, it’s been tough but I think it helps if I get stuck with one I go on to the next one 😊

      1. That’s a cool way 👌

  30. I smiled at- oh well I will write tomorrow. Been there many times 🙂

    1. Yeah, I think most of us writers experience this at some point.

A & J PEI Treasures/E Jean Simpson, BEd, BA, MA

    Glad you are keeping productive.

    1. Thanks, I’m trying my best to do so.

  32. I can understand writer’s block. One thing I noticed that helps me is stepping away from that particular project and work on something different. Also if I’m looking for something to write, looking at different images helps me come up something.

    1. Yeah, that really helps which is why I try to write multiple things together. If I’m out of ideas for one I can work on the other book. Prompts help too.

  33. I loved the poem. I get blocked in the editing stage and then start working on other stories or starting new story ideas. Would that be called Editor’s block?

    1. I’m blocked in the editing stage too lol. I guess we both have Editor’s block.

  34. I take breaks and that usually helps the creative juices to flow again.

    1. True, breaks help a lot.

  35. After doing Nanowrimo, I was so exhausted I completely abandoned my online platforms for the last two weeks. I’m now trying to get back in the groove. Dealing with Writer’s block is unique to everyone but general advice is not to worry about perfection until you’ve finished the first draft, however bad it is.

    1. True, writer’s block is unique to every writer and we experience it differently. Yeah, I’m sure mine will be gone eventually.

      1. I’ve really struggled to craft pieces after my writing break. But it’s coming back slowly.

        1. That’s good, I’m sure once you get back into it for a while it’ll get back to normal.

          1. I do want to improve the normal, though. Add consistency; something you are admirably proficient at🥹🙏🏾

            1. Thanks, I try my best but it takes a lot of practice. Keep working on it and I’m sure you’ll be able to become more consistent over time 😊

  36. I think the most important thing I learned this year with having a dry spell is acceptance. Just accept where I am with it, and that it won’t last forever

    1. Yes! Accepting actually really helps get rid of writers block faster. The more you fight it the worse you feel.

  37. Writer’s block is the the worst O_o but it’s actually the time where I get to write poetry 💙💙💙💙

    1. Oh nice, glad you’re able to create some great poetry despite writers block 😊

      1. It’s a challenge, yes. But thankfully, it goes away ^^

        1. Yes, thankfully so 😊
