Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market Experience

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market

As I had mentioned in an earlier post, I had recently attended the first ever Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market. And, it was actually the first vegan fair I have ever attended. What a treat! I went with one of my cousin brothers since we’re both foodies. It was such a great experience I wanted to share it with you guys too so I took lots of videos. Unfortunately, it was crowded so I couldn’t get any great images so please excuse the quality of the ones I use for this post. For better quality and a better view of everything overall I would recommend watching my YouTube video of the experience:

Another reason I wanted to share this experience is because I wanted to support the local businesses that participated in this fair. Many of whom I already buy products from. I think it’s always a good idea to support local businesses. Especially in this case. The thing is, veganism isn’t big in Kenya or Africa in general. And that’s fine. But I think that’s why vegan, vegetarians or even those that like to occasionally have plant based foods need to support these businesses more than ever. It’s easy to go under when your target market is so small. So before I start this post, I ask you to support these businesses if you can. Even if you aren’t from Kenya, their Instagram profiles will be linked so do consider giving it a follow.

Planta

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market Planta

The first booth we stopped at was Planta. I absolutely love their products and have been using them for quite a while. My favourite is their vegan burger patties that remind me of Beyond Burger but these are spiced much better so they have a lot of flavour. Planta offers a large variety of plant based meat alternatives/substitutes. From all the vegan meat substitutes I’ve tried in Kenya, I think Planta is my absolute favourite. If you’re someone who is looking to add more plant based meals to your diet, a new vegan looking for good meat alternatives or just someone attempting to find new products to try, Planta is for you. Whether you’re vegan or not, you will enjoy the flavours of their foods.

Pop Fusion

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | Pop Fusion

Pop Fusion is a fun popcorn brand offering lots of cool vegan popcorn flavours. They had some samples and I tried the classic flavour I think. It was so delicious and had this lovely cinnamon flavour. Generally, I really don’t like cinnamon but it tasted good with the popcorn.

MarDeli

As soon as I smelt the amazing flavours I pretty much floated to the MarDeli table like in the cartoons!

They offer vegan catering and had all these amazing vegan Ethiopian dishes for people to try at the fair. It smelt really heavenly and took me back to my days in Ethiopia.

The Wine Box

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | The Wine Box

Next, we stopped at The Wine Box. A lot of people don’t know this, especially when they first go vegan, but a lot of alcohols are not traditionally vegan. Always do your research and find vegan brands. The Wine Box offers so many vegan wine options as you can probably see from the picture.

For more about The Wine Box click here.

Greenspoon

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | Greenspoon

Greenspoon is an online store that carries a lot of vegan products. We’ve been buying our vegan products from them for ages and the price is actually more affordable for a number of items compared to buying in stores. I would so recommend checking them out.

Soul Vegetarian Bakery And Catering

Soul Vegetarian Bakery And Catering Donuts

Soul Vegetarian Bakery And Catering Donuts

Next is Soul Vegetarian. It’s one of the first vegan places I tried when I moved back to Kenya. They have some incredible vegan baked goods. My favourite is their cinnamon rolls. I even got my birthday cake from them last year. They had lots of delicious soul food options as well as baked goods like cake and donuts. My cousin bother and I decided to try their donuts and both of them were absolutely delicious. Would so recommend them!

Vegany

Vegany Cookies

Vegany Tofu

Okay, so there is a funny story behind Vegany. I follow them on Instagram and noticed that they had a giveaway. Now, generally I never win those so I never bother but for some reason I was like why not? So, I participated in the giveaway and ended up winning some free tofu! Yay, we love their tofu. They said we could pick it up at the fair since we were both going to be there so I went over to their table to get my gift. They gave me one of each flavour of tofu they offer.

Then, the person at the table was like, “do you know *insert high school friend’s name*?” And I was like, ummm yeah how do you know her?? lol! And he was like, we’re her parents. I was so surprised but what a cool coincidence. We talked for a little bit and they seemed so lovely just like she is. We actually went to Canada at around the same time but she’s decided to stay there and is still there right now. But after that, I reached out to her on IG since we haven’t talked in a while and it was so nice catching up with her. But yeah, such an interesting coincidence to meet them there and that they created my favourite tofu brand!

Check out their awesome products here.

Hot & Sassy

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market Hot & Sassy

Hot & Sassy are a vegan spice brand. I told my cousin brother that his brother should have come with us since he loves spicy foods lol! He has a good tolerance for it too. They were also offering some vegan food items.

Check out Hot & Sassy here. (sorry haven’t found their link yet will share it when I do!)

Simply Baked

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | Simply Baked

Simply Baked Vegan Pizza

I’ve heard of Simply Baked as their baked vegan products are pretty popular in Kenya but I had never tried any of their products before. We really liked how amazing everything smelt so we decided to try their vegan veggie pizza. It was made on bread dough like traditional pizza. It was delicious but I thought it was a bit pricey. And the dough had become a little chewy but that wasn’t their fault, the weather was rainy and it had been out all day because of the fair. I’m sure the ones they make fresh are even more delicious.

Check out Simply Baked here.

Mtofu

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | Mtofu

Mtofu Nairobi Kenya Vegan Products

So, if I’m not wrong, Mtofu is owned by the same people that own Ethos (a fully vegan restaurant in Nairobi that co-hosted this fair). Their products are perfect for those looking for that smoky, meat flavour without hurting animals to get it. Mtofu products definitely have that meat flavour and I think they would be a great substitute for those that are newly vegan and miss the meat flavours.

Check out more about Mtofu here.

Acquired Palate

Vegan Kenya is an online store that sells a ton of vegan products and specialises in international vegan products. They had quite a few products I was familiar with in Canada as well as many from the US, UK, Korea and more. They are one of the best vegan online stores in Kenya. We ended up buying some products from them. My cousin bough some vegan KitKats and protein bars. I bought some vegan KitKats too for my sister and I.

Zahu’s

Zahu's vegan chocolates Nairobi Kenya

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | Zahu's vegan white chocolate

Zahu’s is a vegan chocolate brand in Kenya and I love that their chocolates have very minimal, organic and ethically sourced ingredients. I wasn’t planning on buying one but their white chocolate stood out to me. Traditionally, white chocolate is heavy on animal products and most vegan brands can’t get it just right. So, many of them don’t make white chocolate. This was the first one I saw in Kenya and decided to get it since I really wanted to try it.

Niru’s Delight offers a wide variety of vegan foods and snacks. Everything looked so delicious and we tried a little oat cookie/biscuit which was so yum. Everything is made by her elderly mother and made with lots of love. Would definitely recommend checking them out but I didn’t find any information for them online so not so sure how.

Alphajiri Greengrocer is another one that I am familiar with so I was happy to see them at the Nairobi vegan fair and market. I usually buy my Korean stuff from them i.e gochujang and kimchi. They also have a lot of other products to offer and the best part is you would be supporting locals. I get their products on Greenspoon but you can also get them directly.

Do check them out here.

Up In Flames

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | Up In Flames

Up In Flames creates something really unique- spicy jams. I know, it’s so random but like in a cool way. This was probably one of the most out of the box products at the Nairobi vegan fair and market. My cousin brother and I actually ended up getting a jar for his brother because as I said he loves spicy stuff. I keep forgetting to ask him if he tried it. But my cousin who was with me tried a sample and really liked it. It was quite spicy apparently.

NuZiwa

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | NuZiwa

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market | NuZiwa

Our last stop at the Nairobi vegan fair and market was NuZiwa. In Swahili, Kenya’s official language although most people speak native/tribal languages too, milk is called maziwa. So, Nuziwa is a fun play on the word. I wanted to explain those for my foreign readers. We have been buying their plant based milk for a while now and I think I even talked about how much I liked their strawberry milk like a year ago. Anyway, my sister needed some soy milk so we stopped and bought some. They were also offering vegan coffees and teas which was so cool. This is definitely my favourite local brand of vegan milk. Would really recommend them.

Masai Market

Masai Market At Ananas Food Court

Masai Market At Ananas Food Court

The Nairobi vegan fair and market was held at a food court which also had a Masai Market so we decided to stop by there while waiting for our Uber. They had lots of cool Masai items and I ended up getting these Africa earrings because I have a necklace that would match them. So cute! Check them out at Ananas Food Court.

The Final Haul

Nairobi Vegan Fair And Market Experience

So, this is everything I brought back from the Nairobi vegan fair and market. My cousin brother and I had such a wonderful time there and so glad we went.

I hope you enjoyed this post and reading more about the plant based options in Nairobi. There was a time when we had almost none and now look how far we’ve come. If you’re from Nairobi, do consider supporting these businesses and buying local.

  1. Wow! Nairobi has so many vegan options! Over here we don’t have many, and most are imported and are quite expensive. Thanks for sharing

    1. Yes, there are so many vegan options here now! It’s wonderful. Imported stuff is very expensive here too but thankfully we have many local options as well. I guess since veganism isn’t so popular in Asia most of Asian countries don’t have a lot of vegan food options.

      1. Yes, you’re right! We are a meat loving nation.

        1. Most Asian countries are. People think India isn’t because it hasn’t a high number of vegetarians but it also consumes very high amounts of animal products.

          1. Yes if it’s not red meat it’s the fish and chicken.

            1. Same in most countries. Here, chicken is probably the most popular option.

              1. Very true. 🐓

                1. I’ve also noticed that people have cut down on meat for health reasons but other animal products like dairy and eggs are more popular these days.

                  1. I don’t like eggs either but dairy is okay.

                    1. Same here, dairy was the only thing I liked before going vegan.

                    2. Since our vegan options regarding milk substitute is nearly non-existent or too expensive, I’m sticking to milk. Besides I like milk.

                    3. Yeah, as long as you don’t have an intolerance or anything milk is fine for most people. Plus, like you said you don’t have proper substitutes so it wouldn’t make sense to stop using dairy.

                    4. Exactly! Luckily I don’t have lactose intolerance.

  2. I must admit, we do a lot of our shopping through amazon. But food is definitely one thing we love to support locally. We go out on date night once a month and are always trying new places. You’d think we would run out of places, but between our favorites (about 6 or 7 places) and places always failing and being replaced, we haven’t run out yet, hahahahaha 😀

    1. That’s really great. We try to go to new places every other week or so to support local businesses as well as just have fun. Lol, same here- we’ve not run out of places yet.

  3. Must be your longest post ever.

    So many things
    So many startups.
Wow, I’m impressed with how it is there.
And you say it’s not big thing in Africa. Look at these companies, wow

    1. I’m pretty sure this is the longest post I’ve ever written lol. It took me like three weeks to write.

It’s not a big thing as in lots of options but very few vegans 🥲

      1. Well you can’t always eat outside.

But these options always seems trustful.

Future is vegan, this post made me happy.

Suppose if you had missed any pic or alt text, the amount of exasperation would have been great 😛

I still had to see the video. I’ll be mad if it doesn’t have “you” in it.

        1. I missed a vendor but it’s fine lol 😂

          You’re gonna be mad…

          1. What’s the proof that you actually went there? 🧐

Liked the video ( not loved, because it doesn’t have you 🥹).
The idea is great. The place looks very decent.
You have done great amount of work for the post and the video, that’s commendable and appreciable. So many good companies. Loved the concept.
Why that food is called vegan meat is still a question. I mean, why we have to call it “meat” anyway?

            1. It had my hands so that’s proof enough lol 😜

Meat is just the best way to describe it. I mean why do we call animal meat “meat” and not cow or pig or goat? We have words like mutton, bacon, cheese etc but those aren’t real words, they are also just made up by people. “Meat” is more about the texture, flavour and what it’s being used as a substitute for.

              1. By now mind sees meat as something else 🤷🏻
When you talk to people that you ate meat, then it creates confusion. It will get hard to explain them what it is made up of and on.
I feel this is putting vegan food on a backseat, I mean a better identity would have been great.
People need more awareness. When you say specific word they should instantly think of that particular thing

                1. Maybe in India but here it’s pretty clear what you mean when you say “vegan meat.” Maybe because vegan meat options have become popular here and people are getting a better understanding of it. I think vegan meat is properly named because it’s for people looking for vegan alternatives to meat. So it’s still technically meat, it’s just made from plants.

                  1. Here I don’t think many people know what a vegan is!

                    I mean yes, people know
but not all of them know.

                    1. Yeah, veganism isn’t big at all in Asia yet.

                    2. Yeah

I came to know veganism just a few years ago. 🙂

                    3. Me too, I’ve only known about it for a few years now.

  4. I felt like you took me with you! Excellent read and your suggestions were so thorough! I love Beyond, but those donuts are calling my name!

    1. Thank you so much! Haha those donuts were so good we have to go back for more.

  5. I so enjoyed this post. I worked in Africa for a short time (years ago) and managed to squeeze a safari in Kenya in. The stars at night, the noises of the wild life and the animals in the wild. I will never forget.
As for a vegan lifestyle. I think more and more people realize that we need to change. I do it for health reasons. (I have RA) but soon it became more important. It’s about the environment as well. I just wrote a post the other day. I haven’t it published on my blog yet and hope you won’t think I am a copy cat. It’s an important part of my life now too.

    1. Thanks so much. Wow, that’s wonderful. The safari’s here really are incredible.

I initially went vegan for the animals but over time I’ve noticed a lot of health benefits too so I totally understand why so many people opt for a vegan diet for health reasons. I look forward to reading your post too. I’m always happy when people share their experiences with veganism.

  6. Wow Pooja, this is a huge post and there is sooo much food! Wonderful. I don’t follow Vegan but my sister is and I’ve tried some of her food.

    1. Yup, and I didn’t even share all the vendors there! I think vegan food can be fun sometimes even for those that don’t follow a vegan diet 😃

      1. I’m a long way from being vegan. I’ll have chili for breakfast. 🤙🏻

        1. That’s okay, my best friend is too but now she occasionally enjoys vegan food because of me 😅

          1. 🤙🏻😊😊🥰🥰

  7. Bakery for me please, I adore vegan pastry

    1. Vegan pastries are so good.

      1. I would say they are the best, I also prefer vegan burgers to regular burgers

        1. Oh true, vegan burgers are amazing when made well. I used to love Beyond Burgers but now I prefer the Planta ones. They just have such a perfect flavour.

  8. Wow! I don’t find being vegan at home diffficult at all but sometimes when I travel it can be a pain that restaurants still don’t have the creativity to offer interesting dishes that are also vegan. There are so many great options for the home cook these days that it should be easy to add one or two onto the menu. Such a great post, I really enjoyed it.

    1. Yeah, veganism isn’t too bad in Kenya now either. Lots of options. But it’s true, it’s tough when traveling especially to countries with very small vegan populations. Some of them don’t fully know what veganism is yet so that can make it hard.
True, a lot of places just have salad or fries as vegan options which is sort of disappointing but I’ve noticed it’s not like that in Nairobi.
      Thanks so much.

  9. I was surprised to see vegan KitKat in the Final haul pic. The food looks very good. There should be some way to smell the food through “smellonet”, trade mark pending, lol.

    1. Haha yeah, I just couldn’t resist since I haven’t had a KitKat in years. It tasted exactly like regular KitKat which was interesting. Lol, yes please invent that quickly it’s very necessary for posts like this one.

  10. OK, I’m not a vegan, but I saw donuts, damn it lol
Seriously, though, so much of that food looks incredible, and that fair seems huge. Glad you enjoyed it, Pooja!

    1. Some of the best donuts I’ve had even compared to non-vegan donuts I’ve had before!
Yeah, everything was so delicious and the fair smelt like the best restaurant ever lol. Thanks!

      1. It certainly looked like a grand time!
I’m sure those donuts were far better than the typical pre-fab offerings one usually sees. Fresh made is always best, vegan or otherwise!

        1. Oh absolutely, the fresh made ones always taste so much better.

          1. There are two local places that make them fresh daily around here. When you can get near them, they’re freaking awesome. One of my exes used to work at one of them. Ah, those were the days…Free donuts. 🤣

            1. Haha free donuts seem like an amazing relationship perk 😅

              1. It definitely didn’t hurt matters, not gonna lie lol

  11. Oh my, what a fun place to explore vegan options! I was taken by the donuts.

    1. It was so great and the donuts were the highlight of it!

  12. Great and detailed read as a vegetarian I was thrilled but surprised availabilities more than here in 🇨🇦 .
    Well- done and Thanks .

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, we have lots of great options here now and it costs so much less than the vegan products in Canada. I spend less than half on food here than I did when living in Canada.

      1. You’re welcome. I shop.at Whole Foods and Organic Garage and the cost is just outrageous now.Health is wealth so just have to take time out to shop around.
        Stay safe 🙏.

        1. Yeah, things have gotten so expensive there and especially the healthier food options which is so disappointing. True, what else can you do. You’d rather spend more on health food than on medication.
          Stay safe too ✨

  13. Wow post, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  14. Wow such a good selection! This surprises me more than the (slowly) growing vegan options in Romania. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Yeah, I was so happy to see such a large number of products! So glad there are more vegan options in Romania too. It’s not always easy to find vegan products everywhere but I have noticed that they’re becoming a little more popular worldwide.

  15. Sure looks good!! I’m just off to cook a green lentil curry with plenty of garlic, spices, onion and red pepper. I’ll let you know how it went!!

    1. Thanks so much! Oh nice, do let me know how it turned out.

  16. such variety…and all look so wonderful.
a fun experience and would be to experience too seen from this share….🤍

    1. Thanks so much, everything was great. A very fun experience indeed 😊

      1. my pleasure 🤍

  17. Wow! What ai wonderful and delicious post, Pooja. We try to support our local stores and restaurants, as well.

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, it was wonderful and I only wish we hadn’t eaten beforehand lol. That’s wonderful, it’s always nice to support local businesses.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

A & J PEI Treasures/E Jean Simpson, BEd, BA, MA

Sounds like a great time and such a variety of products!

    1. We did, they had so much to offer!

  19. My goodness, such an excellent profile and review. Not to mention that the food looks so yummy. Your work was Herculean or the female version of Herculean–Dianan? I appreciate the links. Veganism and vegetarianism are niche here, as I suppose they still are nearly everywhere. Thanks for all this, Pooja!

    1. Thank you, it took me forever to finish writing the post but I really wanted to share it. The food looked (and smelt) incredible. They’re pretty niche here too but thankfully the vegan movement seems to be growing these days.

  20. Hi, I’m a pescatarian(eat seafoods, veggies and fruits except animal meats). So I am very interested in vegan products and foods.

Where was this event held? I want to go if the event is held nearby next time.🙂

    Thanks for sharing.🙏

    1. That’s really interesting. This one is in Kenya but if you’re looking for vegan fairs in the US they are usually held in June or July so check around that time. Hope that helps 🙂

  21. Wow, that is quite a post! How did you even remember all those vendors and what they had for sale?! I love local markets and try to support them, though we usually only have them in the summer since, as you will remember from your time here, Canadian winters are very cold (well, except this year).

    1. Thank you, haha yes it took me forever to write since there were so many vendors. Thankfully, I had taken videos so I remembered the names!
That’s wonderful. Yeah, I can understand it’s really not possible in winter especially the really cold ones.

  22. It does look like a treat! Quite a variety of options. Nice job with your video. Thank you for this healthy and inspiring share, Pooja. 🌱

    1. It really was, I was so happy to see so many people there- veganism is really growing here! Thank you so much ☺️

      1. You’re very welcome. Thank you! That is great news! 👍🏻

        1. You’re welcome too and it is!

  23. It makes me happy to see that you get a pretty good variety of Vegan options out there. 😁 I gotta check out your video soon too!

    1. Yeah, it was so overwhelming in the best way. Thanks so much! 😊

      1. Goodness, that’s so wonderful! You’re VERY welcome! 😊💖❤️

  24. What an amazing range of local vegan producers you have! Really well done for supporting them and bringing them to a wider audience.

    1. Yes, we sure do! It was so amazing seeing them all and seeing how many people are interested in veganism now. I was happy to support them in any way I can!

  25. This sounds interesting. I’ve not seen an event like this.

    1. It was the first one ever held here but it was really great.

  26. What??? All wine not vegan, what else would it be?

    1. Most wines have animal products and most alcohol in general has animal products 😫

      1. Ok!! So I learn something new everyday, thanks!

        1. No worries, I think it’s new information to a lot of people. I was so shocked when I found out when I first started switching to plant based!

  27. Wow. That was a ton of vegan options and food highlights. Thanks for the share!

    1. Yes, there were so many options there it was amazing. Thanks!

  28. Really Nice 👌 Info

    1. Thanks so much.

  29. That’s a great range of vegan products. Some of them are quite unexpected. It was a great fun read!

    1. Yes, such a great variety at the fair. Thanks so much!

  30. What an amazing post with so many options.Sounds like you had a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing.💕
