I Just Got Scammed!

woman in white long sleeve shirt using silver laptop computer | I Just Got Scammed!

So, the inevitable has happened. I say inevitable because when you spend tons of time online you will eventually end up falling for something. And that’s what happened to me. Yes folks, I just got scammed. Let’s talk about it.

What happened

So, remember how I told you guys someone randomly sent me money on PayPal. Well, this has nothing to do with that so don’t get distracted, okay? I actually figured that out. It was from a client of mine. I had forgotten about the payment but they hadn’t (thankfully!).

So, I buy a lot of my clothes on Instagram. I’ve been doing this for ages, pretty much since I moved back to Kenya. It’s generally super safe and quite affordable. Plus, I get to support small local businesses instead of large unethical stores. The other day, my sister sent me someone’s profile on IG and asked if I wanted anything from them since they had these pants I had been looking for. I told her to get two pairs of pants. Everything went well and the seller told us the items would be delivered.

Now, when the time for delivery came, no one showed up. My sister reached out to ask them what happened and they blocked her. So, we realised it was a scam.

The silver lining

The good news is, my sister didn’t pay them upfront. We only paid a small amount first and were going to pay the rest on delivery. We paid 650 ksh ($4.50) which is not a lot of money. Thankfully, we didn’t pay the full amount because that would have sucked.

So, I just got scammed. It happens. Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad and the amount was small. But it taught us to be much more cautious online lol. I mean, I usually am but I’m going to be extra careful now.

Of course, we all reported the account but it’s still there because Instagram is awful and does nothing about actual scammers but blocks people who haven’t even done anything wrong. Anyway, if you have an Instagram account, please report them. This is their account: nihan_collections254

  1. I got scammed on a Christmas gift I bought. I realized immediately that the address the PayPal payment was sent to in no way matched the order. I tried to call & email with no answer. Luckily, I used PayPal and they refunded my full amount instantly without question.

    1. That’s so awful but I’m so glad they were able to refund the amount. I wasn’t refunded as the scammers had already withdrawn it. But thankfully it was a very small amount.

  2. Its becoming more and more common these days. I’m glad you guys didn’t pay too much upfront.

    1. So true, that’s why we never pay upfront when buying online. You have to be so careful these days.

      1. Very good strategy.

      2. I haven’t heard of the pay later option. It doesn’t seem to be an option I have seen in the USA.

        1. Yeah, we didn’t have that in Canada either but with most places in Kenya you can pay on delivery.

  3. I think you were really lucky it wasn’t worse Pooja!!

    1. I think so too, so glad we didn’t pay the amount upfront!

  4. People are always trying to find a way to steal.

    1. True, there are too many scammers these days.

  5. I’m glad you didn’t lose much money! I got scammed. Twice. One was through LinkedIn when I was sending out resumes/applications and they had cloned an account so it looked legit when I looked the person up off-site! Another was on Facebook Marketplace, but luckily the payment I received was flagged as fraudulent, although I can’t have a Venmo account any longer. It makes me furious. I just cried and cried on my husband asking why people are how they are.

    1. Me too, I’m glad we didn’t pay the full amount.
Oh wow, that is so awful. I’m so sorry you had those experiences. I truly wonder why people are like that. With those many tech skills they could find a legit job but choose to scam innocent people instead. So disappointing.

  6. Sorry, Pooja. I don’t know how people can do that.

    1. Yeah, it’s so sad how many scammers are out there these days.

  7. These Instagram profiles looks Sketchy to me and I cannot trust them for shopping.

Unless there’s an actual website, I will not buy from them at all. Even then, I won’t do online payment.
I never do online payment for such things.
I always choose for COD. Even it’s something more trustworthy like Flipkart or Amazon, I go for COD.
Flipkart now tells to open the thing first, and then pay, so that’s a bit more trustful.
With Flipkart, I sometimes do online payment, but still that’s a reputable company and they have records of the payment on the site 😁.

I got scammed twice. First, it was some job offer( years ago)
Second, it was some trainer (again years ago). The trainer, did in fact made me diet and all, gave a complete plan. However, that was unsatisfactory and he didn’t care to respond after that. He was uninterested since the beginning 😛

    1. Yeah, it’s good to be careful. So, in Kenya buying on Instagram is very popular and most of the sellers are legit. But some are not so you have to be extra careful.

Oh no, that’s awful. It’s so rude the trainer didn’t even reply. The next time you need a diet plan talk to my sister, she’s a nutritionist!

      1. Here it is popular too….
There are like 10000 sources from where people buy online. Most of them are genuine.
I also buy clothes online, but you cannot tell about the fabric and all.
I like going to mart, there I can find affordable clothes and all. In fact, I got a cargo today.
In India these these are huge, you can find good stuff at every corner.

Oh, I like her due to that, My interest in knowing her risen when you told me she’s a nutritionist. She’s such a sweet person. But, interestingly, I never talked to her about health and wellness. But, she’s super helpful.
Send her my best wishes and Hi.

        1. That’s really interesting. I buy stuff from Amazon India sometimes when relatives are going to visit. They have some good stuff.

          Will do 😊

          1. Try Myntra!
            It’s best for clothes
            You will love

            1. Thank you, will keep it in mind!

  8. I hope you have no further repercussions from the incident.

    1. Thanks and I hope so too.

  9. I ran in here when I got the email notification for your blog.I’m sorry this happened to you.I hope their profile is suspended.Stay well & I’ll catch up on your other posts later.

    1. Thanks, yeah it sucks and I hope the account gets taken down. Thankfully mine was a small amount but they must be scamming others for larger amounts too since many wouldn’t mind paying the full amount upfront.

  10. Really glad it was the paypal thing. I had visions of you getting bilked for thousands :-/
I tried to join insta once. They wanted a picture of me holding a security code. I told them off and that nobody gets my picture. So my account was never verified and it is in limbo.

    1. Yeah, I was kind of freaking out about the PayPal thing too so I’m glad it was all sorted out.

Why did they want that? I have an Instagram and they haven’t once asked me for any personal information. That’s so bizarre. I’m glad you didn’t send it.

      1. My sister has an insta too and she was surprised. The only thing I can think of is because I didn’t use my real name but Book Stooge.

        1. I didn’t use my real name for one of my profiles and they didn’t ask me anything intrusive. I feel like the fact that they even asked you that is extremely creepy.

  11. Too bad that you went through that, but as you said, at least it wasn’t that bad. About four years ago, I was victim of RFID skimming. Basically, a thief stole my debit card number by walking past me. The thief spent about $35, but fortunately, my bank refunded the money. Since then, I’ve been using RFID secure sleeves for my cards, and I haven’t encountered any problems so far.

    1. Yeah, thankfully the amount was quite small.

One of my friends was a victim of that too but luckily she got the money back as well. I’m so glad the bank refunded you as well. Glad you’re staying extra safe now.

  12. Some interesting stuff on Instagram but quite a lot of it is scammers trying to convince you to enter their page not to mention its a site for hooker promotion. LOL. My page was attacked 5 times in February, but my virus program blocked them all.

    1. Oh yeah, stuff like that is all over IG and they don’t even do anything about it. My sisters account was hacked and she never got it back.

      1. A retiree in this retirement village was scammed and they emptied her bank account.

        1. Oh no, that’s so sad. Wow.

  13. Man, that totally sucks, but at least you didn’t lose a ton of money. People these days make me wonder. There’s always been con artists around, but it is so much freaking easier nowadays, that everyone tries to get in on the action.

    1. Yeah it definitely sucks but thankfully it was a small amount. I just hope they shut down the page before they scam other people. IG is so bad at that.

      1. I have no experience with IG, but for some reason, that doesn’t surprise me lol

        1. Lucky you lol, IG has become awful.

          1. Never felt the need, and even less so these days 😄

            1. As a social media manager trust me stay away from anything Meta owns.

              1. Duly noted lol

  14. I’m glad that you weren’t totally ripped off, Pooja, wow! You are 100% right on the way IG handles stuff like this – they don’t and they still have me blocked until 4th March for leaving three red hearts as a reply to an account I follow. Done on purpose as a form of censorship.

    1. Yeah, I’m glad it wasn’t a large amount. IG is so pathetic, they censor people who do nothing wrong and accounts like this one are fine. Such double standards. And then they don’t even have customer care you can talk to. That platform is killing itself and it will have no one else to blame when everyone stops using it eventually.

      1. I agree Pooja. IG will eventually die of it continues on this path. Oh well.

        1. It’s almost dead already, most people have moved or don’t post anymore. It’s just not what it once was.

          1. I see lots of activity daily, Pooja. I know you haven’t been on there much lately.

            1. Yeah, I feel like there’s still activity there but a lot less compared to what it once was. Especially with people my age. So many have left. Even people I knew or was friends with. They’ve all moved to other platforms.

              1. Which platforms? I found one called Glass that seems like it is free of the bullying on IG by IG.

                1. The ones I know of are We Heart It and Retrace. I’ve never tried the latter but I used to love We Heart It.

  15. No way, what a scallywag. I only buy online from trusted websites and on Amazon. On Amazon I always make sure that the seller is authenticated etc. If you used your bank card to purchase the goods and it’s a Visa or Mastercard then if you contact them then they can recover your money for you.

    1. Yeah, it’s best to be careful. IG stores are very popular in Kenya but you have to be careful. I generally never pay the full amount unless it’s a sell I know is legit.

  16. I have instagram so I reported that account as possible scam as you suggested. I have never been scammed on social media but I have been scammed via email. A friend of mine allowed an email address to expire/retire and later the email name was given to a scammer. I got an email from what I thought was my friend. He said he was in trouble in London and needed two hundred dollars, which I sent him. Only later did I think about contacting him in other ways and that’s how I found out it wasn’t him.

    1. Thank you, I hope if enough people report them their page will be suspended. They’re still out there trying to scam others and it’s awful.
Oh no, that is really horrible. Wow, I hope you were able to get the money back.

  17. I usually get scammed on the selling apps 🙁 that’s horrible even if it was little money it still is mean and their scam business should be shut down! 😆🥲

    1. Oof that’s awful. Too many scammers out there these days 😫

  18. Yeah meta is so bad about things when you report some one, smh they seem to love to allow things like that. I have been scammed, it was ine of those things that supposedly you just cover shipping for an item. I knew something was off when the amount they hit me dor was the wrong amount, then a few seconds later I was hit for $199.99 via paypal. The phone number dor dispute was in china so I couldn’t even call them. Got ahold of my banks fraud dept and put a stop to all paypal hits. About ruined my paypal account that I have had since about 2002.

    1. Urgh yeah and these accounts are still up and never get suspended. Meta is kind of ridiculous in that way.
Oh wow, that’s so awful. I’m so sorry you experienced that and it’s a pretty big amount too.

  19. These scammers are everywhere 😮‍💨

    1. Too many scammers these days! 😫

  20. I haven’t been scammed Pooja, but I have been hacked, and that was awful. An elderly friend of mine was scammed though, and she lost her life savings. Someone phoned claiming to be from her telephone company and said she had double paid her account. She gave them her account number so they could refund the money, but when they asked her for her username and password, she also gave them that. They cleaned out her bank accounts. The bank, while sympathetic, were unable to do anything as she had provided them with all the information needed to access her accounts. I would like to think that what goes round comes round and these people will get what is due to them, but in reality I know they won’t. 💕📚

    1. Oh wow that is so incredibly sad. I like to think so too. I hope are held accountable and at some point they pay for what they did but I know it doesn’t happen often. Most of the time they get away with it which is so sad.

  21. Sigh, that’s so terrible and it makes things bad for legitimate companies

    1. Yeah, it really sucks and true it effects real online stores too because people trust them less.

  22. Need to be vigil on that. Thanks.

    1. Yes, very much so. Thank you.

  23. Wow. That’s awful. Glad it was only a small amount.

    1. Yes, I’m so glad we didn’t pay the full amount. It really is awful. The worst part is that their account is still up and running and scamming others.

      1. Yeah, that is bad. My friend was scammed and she hasn’t gotten her money back. The company seemed legit because they had a lot of details about her.

        1. That’s so awful, hopefully it wasn’t a big amount.

          1. It wasn’t too bad. She didn’t tell me how much but she is still trying to recover it.

            1. Hopefully she’ll be able to recover it but glad it wasn’t too bad.

  24. I am so sorry this happened to you. People can be so mean. Thank goodness the full price wasn’t paid.

    1. Yes, I’m so glad the amount was small. I just hope IG shuts them down.

      1. I know. Hopefully they will.

  25. I guess it’s part of life’s rich tapestry. We have to keep our wits about us and take the rough with the smooth!

    1. Yes, unfortunately so. The world is filled with scammers these days!

  26. I do most of my shopping online and once or twice have seen payments to large stores that I never use – that way, they’ve stood out on my bank statements and I’ve been able to get the money refunded by my bank. But it’s still a pain! And I hate that people want to do this.

Glad yours was only for a small amount Pooja, but that’s not the point!

    1. So glad you were able to have the money refunded. Unfortunately scammers have become a big problem. Yeah, it’s so sad that people want to make money by stealing from innocent people.

Yeah, I’m glad too but really hope IG takes their account down. You never know who else they’re scamming and it may be for larger amounts. And honestly any amount of stealing is not okay.

  27. hmm we all get burned
    time we learned
    gurus and voodoos
    the who do
    support local
    i wont go on
    just me john

    1. Yup, I definitely learnt my lesson lol.

      1. you have to if you wanna keep becoming gupta!

  28. Thanks for bringing it out here, it happens, but i think when buying from someone other than big players in market ,better we choose cash on delivery option,

    1. Yeah, definitely happens. So most people in Kenya don’t accept cash on delivery for the full amount so we pay a little upfront. Not a very big amount, thankfully.

      1. In India we can do that , full COD. But if you are buying through bigger companies then it’s safe here. Even returning is easy if product mismatches.

        1. Oh that’s really good. Some stores here offer COD but a lot don’t.

          1. Okay, different countries different rules 😊, anyways happy shopping to you always

            1. Thanks ☺️

              1. Welcome 😊

  29. Scammers are everywhere, Pooja. I got scammed a while back and reported it to Amazon and to the bank involved. I didn’t get anywhere with the bank and was furious, plus it was $200.00. So, I paid off the bank card, locked the card and never used it again. The bank I use now notifies me anytime they detect a fraudulent purchase.

    1. Wow, that’s a pretty big amount. That’s so awful. Yeah, you have to be so careful these days and honestly you can still get scammed even if you are super careful. It’s just so awful how many scammers are out there especially on the internet.

      1. Oh, it was a mess and very complicated. I tried to resolve it for over a month. Amazon support was very helpful but the bank was not.

        1. That’s so awful, the bank should at least try to do their best to help.

Sorry you got scammed. Makes it hard to trust online transactions.

    1. It really does but now I know to be extra careful.

  31. Glad to know this was only a small amount and I certainly will keep this in mind. It is hard to shop online these days without running into scammers like this!

    1. True, the internet is full of scammers. It’s awful.

  32. Whoa, that’s wild! Scammers are getting so much more sophisticated. Really glad you and your sister weren’t out a lot of money.

    1. It’s so crazy how many scammers are out there these days. With the internet they’re everywhere. Yeah, so glad we only paid a small amount.

  33. That is terrible Pooja but I am glad it wasn’t much. I was scammed many years ago with a false money order. It cleared at the bank but once it was processed, they came back to me saying it was fake. I had to pay back the $2000 CAD too! I am very careful these days…

    1. Omg, wow that’s a huge amount. So awful!

      1. Yeah, it wasn’t fun, but I was able to pay it off…Hope you are having a better day today!

        1. I am thanks!

Glad you were able to pay it off.

  34. It’s such a terrible feeling to be scammed. I have a lot of people that send emails to our business and I delete them without opening attachments. We’ve had phone calls and weird occurrences and all sorts. It’s the deterioration of trust that annoys me most. I’ve become cynical and hard in places. I think everyone has. Another canker in the myriad problems we face socialising and shopping in the modern world. I’m glad you didn’t lose much but it’s the trust that hurts the most Pooja.

    1. Yeah, the loss of trust really sucks so much. I’m sorry you receive those too, I get a lot of scam emails too and it sucks. I’m so glad that the internet exists but it’s become a playground for scammers and that’s the sad part of it.

      1. Seems that for humans to create anything we have to have dark and light. Maybe that’s in everything, maybe it’s our creation story.

        1. Perhaps so. I think humans themselves have both dark and light in different amounts so it makes sense that what we create reflects that too.

  35. I got scammed online by a writing contest. It looked legitimate. Many writers paid some amount as entrance fee, submitted our stories and waited for the day of the results. When the day arrived, literal crickets. We got nothing. The people running the account on Instagram stopped posting anything and never replied to the many questions and complaints.

    1. That’s so awful. These scams look so real it’s crazy. I’m sorry you were scammed too. It’s so disappointing.

      1. I wish there was a way to test the legitimacy of a website because even the legit looking ones end up being scams.

        1. Yes, that would be very helpful. Perhaps someone will create it one day.

          1. Hopefully sooner than later 🤞🏼

            1. 🤞🏽🤞🏽

  36. glad it wasn’t a big loss, Pooja….still an important reminder to be cautious.
    🤍

    1. Yes, an important reminder to be more careful 💕

  37. So sorry to about the scam. So glad it wasn’t bad. I was finally able to sucbscribe to your blog. Your blog looks lovely by the way.

    1. Unfortunately, I don’t see you on my subscriber list so I don’t know if it worked 😕
Yeah, the getting scammed is awful but thankfully it was a small amount.

      1. I have no idea why I am not subscribed then

        1. It’s so odd but don’t worry hopefully it’ll show up on my subscribers list.

  38. Make sure you didn’t use a card or if you did make sure it’s not compromised. Sometimes the scam is not to get that small initial payment but to get all the credit information you used to pay the small amount.

    1. Thankfully I didn’t use my card, just a local online payment system.

  39. A very long time ago, shortly after PayPal was started, my account was locked out and I have never been able to access PayPal again. I am always leery of anything on the internet because there never seems to be a real person you can contact to resolve an issue.

Instagram posers of real sites have been trying hard to make contact with me lately too.

I fell for click bait on Facebook one time and ended up with data encryption virus. Luckily, I had a recent backup and it taught me a good lesson.

    1. That’s really awful. I think the internet is so full of scammers these days you can’t be safe enough. Thankfully, mine wasn’t too bad but it could definitely have been worse.

  40. I agree we need to be extra cautious when we are online. Scammers have developed so many ways to trick people and steal their hard-earned money.

    1. Yeah and there are just so many scammers these days, it’s crazy.

  41. I think there are seasonal scammers, I mean it sounds ridiculous, I thought I had been scammed once or twice but it has always turned out alright. You just have to report the activity to the bank and they cancel the transactions. Scammers are usually pretty obvious unless they are really good at what they are doing, luckily that’s a rare occasion

    1. I didn’t pay through the bank, I payed through a local online service but I did report it to them. Scammers are everywhere these days so it was a good lesson to be extra careful.

      1. Lesson learned

  42. I am sorry that you got scammed Pooja. Honestly, purchasing things online is a scam on its own. With the introduction of “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) it is hard to see what is real and fake anymore.

Being online has its advantages and the disadvantages. The same applies to blogging, these trolls spam our blog posts and we hate it honestly. Hope you are good over there. This is a lesson for sure, sorry once again🙏

    1. Yeah, it’s become crazy these days. So many scammers and some seem so legit.

True, like most things the internet has its pros and cons. Urgh yeah I can’t bare the blogging trolls. They’re obviously AI.

It’s fine it was a small amount, thankfully.

  43. I had my visa card hacked last year. Luckily I was able to get it canceled before they took any money. It was a bit of a nightmare though, having to get a new card, and cancel all of my subscriptions with the old one. Sorry you were a victim too! Xx

    1. Yeah, I can imagine how annoying that must have been but so glad you were able to cancel it on time. Credit card fraud is such a big problem these days.

  44. Same .. have the experience of being scammed.. may be I will write in a blog post.. very bad experience it was

    1. That’s awful, sorry you experienced it too. Yes, you should.

  45. It’s disheartening to reflect on the shadowy realm of scammers, preying on vulnerable individuals like the elderly and teenagers grappling with the tumultuous journey of hormonal imbalance. The insidious allure of quick riches by simply clicking a website can lead unsuspecting teens down a regrettable path. In a somber twist of irony, I found myself entangled in this web of deception when purchasing from Amazon. The joy of a anticipated delivery turned sour as a fake product arrived, a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in an increasingly deceptive online landscape. It’s a stark reality check that underscores the importance of awareness and caution in the digital marketplace.

    1. Yes, very much so. Unfortunately, the internet is full of scammers and we run into them once in a while even when we’re careful.

  46. That is very sad Pooja, Hope you’re okay

    1. I am, thankfully it was only a small amount.

  47. I’m so sorry this happened to you! It’s an awful feeling. Glad it wasn’t a big scam where you lost a lot of money and time. Yep, there are some questionable people out there…

    1. Yeah, it really sucked but just thankful it wasn’t worse. True, especially on the internet the amount of scammer out there is. crazy.

  48. Oh what a drag and TG it wasn’t for much!!!
Oh ugh, I had a hacker trying to take over my account. TG for Apple support who coached me while I was on the phone with them and we were able to shut them down. Scary stuff! 🥹

    1. Wow, that sucks. So glad the support was helpful and you were able to get them out! These scammers are like everywhere these days 😫

      1. Totally, scary stuff❣️

  49. I’m glad you only got scammed out of less than $5, that’s a silver lining for sure. When I first got into crypto, I thought I was being careful, but I still got scammed out of $100 because I rushed into something and didn’t do my research. That’s how the crypto scammers get you… make it seem like you have to rush for a really good deal so people dive in without looking too deep. I only had to learn that less once, fortunately lol.

    1. Oh wow, $100 is a lot so that really sucks. There are so many crypto scammers out there so I do understand how that can happen. Lol yeah, I feel like that’s a lesson you’ll never forget 😅 Same goes for me, I’m always picking the COD stores now 😫

  50. I’ve been scammed a couple of times. It sucks. They didn’t get anything, as I realized what was happening and shut down my two cards. People can be so devious! Horrible! Someone tried to scam my mom. They had a young boy call her asking “grandma” for money. This was before my nephew came home from China, so she actually had no grandsons! Yeah. Didn’t get far with that one!

    1. Wow, that sucks but so glad you were able to shut down the cards on time. It’s really messed up how many scammers there are out there these days!

  51. Sorry that happened to you. Glad it was small amount of money.

    1. Thanks and yeah I’m so glad it was such a small amount.

  52. I don’t shop from IG but I have noticed that there are a lot of accounts who say they are the someone you might know. It’s like once you make one comment on an actors profile and the creepy frauds come out. But my sister and I were scammed while looking to rent a place a couple of years ago. They said that we had to pay for this and that up front in order to apply for it. Never again will we trust that route.

    1. Yeah, IG is really filled with scammers and the issue is they do nothing about it. So, the person/store I bought from was legit but they were hacked and now the hackers are scamming people. It’s so messed up but IG is doing nothing.

So sorry you and your sister got scammed too. That sucks.

  53. Thank Goodness it wasn’t with something you’d sacrificed a lot to attain.🙏🏾😓
