3 Ways To Help Your Writing Anxiety (Guest Post)

3 Ways To Help Your Writing Anxiety (Guest Post)

By E. S. Foster

No matter what type of writer you are, it’s easy to feel anxiety while writing. It might be because you want your work to be perfect, you’re worried that no one will like it, or you believe that it’s not good enough. These negative, anxious thoughts keep you from moving forward with your work. To escape these thoughts, you need to replace them with positive ones. Here are three ways to help your writing anxiety:

Know You Have Time

Writers often experience time anxiety. This is anxiety that arises when you feel that you are running out of time. Often, we believe we should hit certain writing milestones at certain points in our lives, and if we haven’t, then we must be doing something wrong or we’re not good enough to keep going.

The truth is that many writers have started late. Others received plenty of rejections along the way, so their work appeared to the world much later than when they started. But writing isn’t something you’re only allowed to pursue for a set number of years.

Comparing yourself to others only wastes your time. Remember that you have your whole life to write and get better at writing. Eventually, you’ll see some progress, and you’ll recognize the specific path that no other writer is on but you.

Know It Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the details. Writers want their work to be perfect and they get discouraged when it’s not. They slip into the anxious feeling that they’re not good enough. However, your draft doesn’t need to be perfect from the beginning.

The edits will come later. Right now, just focus on your draft and get it down on paper. You have plenty of time to work out the details when you edit. That’s why you need to trust the writing process. Anxiety about being perfect only gets in the way.

Know You Can Make Mistakes

This goes along with being a perfectionist, but it also applies to being a writer in general. Sometimes writers believe that everything will fall apart if they make mistakes in their writing. They start questioning their abilities when they write. They ask, “Did I do this right? Is that how you write this?” I’m definitely one of them!

But making mistakes is part of growing as a writer. One misstep doesn’t mean that you’re now disqualified from reaching your writing goals. It’s also not a reflection of you as a person.

You’re learning a craft, and you’re bound to make mistakes along the way. If you think about it, all writers, even the best ones, started out as writers who had no idea what they were doing.

So if you feel anxious when writing, stop and take a step back. Ask yourself why you might feel this way. Then remind yourself that you’ll reach your goal in time, and you’ll get better along the way.

Happy writing!

  1. Great post! As someone who suffers from anxiety, this was awesome!

    1. I’m glad this helped! Thanks for reading.

  2. Very good advice

  3. “Remember that you have your whole life to write and get better at writing.” – this really hit deep. During my undergrad studies I did a creative writing course because I wanted to be an author one day. Unfortunately for me, my lecturer crushed my spirit and dream within the space of 13 weeks. I told myself if she didn’t think my writing was good enough, then why even bother? I am thankful that I didn’t let that experience stop me from writing completely, otherwise I wouldn’t have started blogging.

    1. I’m sorry you were made to feel that way, but I’m glad you didn’t give up! There’s a Hemingway quote that goes “We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.” Every writer starts off “bad” because there’s a lot to learn. So keep writing!

    1. Thanks for reading!

  4. This is so wonderful and so true. Thank you for sharing such an important post in such detail. Bless you!

    1. Thanks for taking the time to read!

  5. That is great advice. As a writer you certainly have your whole life to get better.

    1. It definitely took some time for me to learn that! It’s good to know you don’t need to retire from writing.

  6. I do get paranoid about publishing mistakes (because I used to work in publishing and you potentially end up with a thousand copies of the same mistake).

    1. Same here! I haven’t worked in publishing, but I definitely experience the paranoia. Thanks for reading!

  12. Time anxiety is a big one for me. I have to remind myself that it’s okay to not meet a deadline all the time.

    1. Same here! I’m glad it helped.

  13. I really needed to read this cause I myself struggle with writing anxiety. Thank you so much for your advice. 💕

    1. I’m glad it helped! Keep writing! 🙂

  14. Perfection is for Gods, we can make mistakes but the question is who would wanna read it? I often reread my own writing and find lots of mistakes, some are misprints, some are grammar / spelling and some are all about sentence structure that does make sense or make it clear

    1. I learned it definitely helps to get another set of eyes on your work!

      1. Absolutely, feedback is vital

  15. Awesome post! It’s good to know, I am not alone with struggles and making mistakes is part of growing as a writer. Pooja, thank you for sharing this very helpful post by E.S. Foster.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed reading!

      1. It’s my pleasure!

  16. Sage advice, hugs, C

  17. Great Post !! 👍

    1. Very good advice! Thank you for sharing, Pooja! 💕

      1. Happy to share the post 😊

  18. Good advice. There must be 50 ways. . . . ❤️

  19. Nice one. Writing is both a joy and a frustration. I write every day. I’m extremely prolific and rarely stuck for an idea or inspiration. My frustration lies in the end product. When I revisit old works I am rarely pleased with the quality. I have to go back and rewrite, rework. ‘All my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity.’ Doesn’t deter me though! Keep writing. Keep improving.
So far I have had eight books properly published and ninety self-published. I’m still striving. One day a publisher will realise the potential in my imaginative Sci-Fi. Until then I write for pleasure!!

  20. Helpful post, a nice one. Thanks.

  21. Great post for novices like me 🙏

  22. Writing, singing and running are the best things to relieve stress, anxiety and release everything we carry inside. Free yourself! Write and create a magical world. Great post Pooja!

  23. Writing for me is therapeutic. I try to make my posts funny as well to give people something to laugh about if they’re having a rough day. It can be stressful, and sometimes – I don’t feel like they’re good enough, but the fact that I love to write – overpowers my feelings of being good enough.

    1. I think as long as you love to write, that’s good enough. Not every post is going to be amazing but it will be worth putting out there. We all struggle with feeling like our posts aren’t good enough, I used to feel like that with every post when I first started and still feel like that with some posts.

      1. Well, if it makes you feel better – I think you’re an excellent writer and you have some very interesting posts and ideas. 🙂

        1. Thanks so much, that’s a really kind thing to say 🙂

          1. Never a problem! Have a great day P.G. 🙂

            1. Have a great day too 🙂

  24. Great Ideas, Pooja.. you know me.. last minute nellies most of the time.. which can be stressful/ 💗

    1. Haha yes but sometimes doing things last minute works out because of the adrenaline 😊

      1. And then there’s that!!! true too😉

  25. Great guest post, I discovered E.S’s blog through yours and have really enjoyed it, thanks Pooja!

  28. Hmmm lovely points
    These makes sense
