How To Retain Your WordPress Followers
I’m back with another blogging advice post today. I know I have not been posting a lot recently but that is because so many things have been going on in my life recently. I’m not quite ready to share all of that on here yet but will probably be sharing it next month. Plus, I need some time to focus on my writing too. I’m working on my first novel which is apparently really difficult. Why didn’t anyone tell me writing a novel is actually kind of difficult? Kidding. But back to this post. Today, I wanted to talk about how to retain your WordPress followers.
I like to share content related to what people ask me the most or what they ask me to share. And one thing I’ve only recently been hearing a lot is how to retain WordPress followers. Since the last couple of WordPress updates (don’t even get me started about the glitches), many people have noticed that their following count seems to decrease every once in a while.
Since, a blogging friend asked me about this the other day, I thought it might be a good idea to share a post since this would help others also having this problem. I share posts often on how to grow your following but this one will teach you how to retain those WordPress followers. Here is how to retain your WordPress followers:
Content
If you are not able to retain your WordPress followers, the first thing you need to think about is your content. I’ve noticed that many people on WordPress don’t have a specific niche. And that’s okay, I don’t either. But the truth is, all your followers may not be interested in following a multi-niche blog. Someone or some bloggers may have followed you after reading a specific post on a specific topic. But they may only be interested in similar posts. And if you don’t continue to post similar content, they may feel it’s best to unfollow your blog.
It’s pretty common knowledge that blogs with specific or niche content retain followers and readers better. So, if you really want to make sure you’re not losing followers due to content, I would recommend finding one niche or a handful of niches and sticking with those.
Another thing is that followers may not want to follow a blog that posts a lot of very controversial or opinionated content. That’s because they may not always agree with you. Stuff like politics can be a major turnoff for some readers. If you would like to retain followers, I would strongly recommend not sharing very controversial or opinionated content.
The problem with this though is that you may start feeling restricted with content. So, if you don’t care too much about losing a few followers, just keep sharing whatever content makes you happy. But remember, if you do hope to make an income from your blog (not everyone does and that’s okay), your content really matters so be mindful of what you share.

Attitude
Like with most things, your attitude really matters when it comes to blogging. And honestly, not even just blogging but with any content you decide to share online. But I think this one is particularly important for bloggers on WordPress because WordPress is such a tight-knit community. How we treat one another on this platform is something people take very seriously and thankfully so because some platforms are an absolute mess. *cough Instagram cough*
Most people do not want to follow a blog where the content creator is rude or standoffish. A lot of people here, including myself, enjoy the social aspects of blogging and would like to get to know other bloggers better. But if you respond rudely or coldly to comments that you receive or come off as having a bad attitude, people are more than likely to unfollow your blog.
Please be considerate and mindful of how you respond to other people on this platform. Personally, I’ve noticed that even though I share so much random content that not all followers will enjoy, many stick around and support my blog because we’ve become friends of the years and just really enjoy conversing with one another. So yes, attitude makes a huge difference.

Effort
Effort goes a long way when it comes to blogging. A little bit of effort makes your readers and followers feel like they are seen or heard. And that often makes them want to continue following your blog and support your content.
What do I mean by effort? Well, it’s really simple and a little obvious but I think we sometimes still need a reminder to do this. Make sure you respond to all your comments and do so politely, if someone takes the time to check out your blog try to do the same. These little things make people feel good and in the end you may just end up making some great virtual friends too.
Let It Go
Have you tried absolutely everything to stop losing followers but it’s happening anyway? Well, that’s because it’s totally normal to lose a couple of followers every now and then.
Firstly, WordPress has consistently been deleting spam or bot accounts on this platform. Which means that some of your followers probably got deleted and it has nothing to do with you or your content.
Next, WordPress does have certain glitches where people’s followers are automatically removed. I know this because I’ve been on both ends with it. I missed some posts on my Reader and realised some of the blogs I had been following for years were no longer on my list of blogs I follow. And I had to refollow them. Which was so weird. And I also got a couple of people telling me that they used to follow my biog and thought I stopped posting because they stopped getting updates from me. Only for it to turn out that they had been magically removed from my followers list. So again, that has nothing to do with you so don’t fret about it. What is yours will find you.
Lastly, some people will just not want to follow your content anymore and that’s totally okay. Maybe your writing style changed (it almost always does over the years) or maybe they changed and have different interests now. Or maybe they secretly hate you and no longer want to your blog. Kidding. My intrusive thoughts made me add that one. But either way, followers come and go. Don’t get your knickers in a bunch about it. Life goes on.
Final Thoughts
I hope this post helped you better understand how to retain your WordPress followers. And like I said, if nothing works just let a few of them go. It’s normal to lose a couple of followers now and then. Nothing to be too concerned about.
