What Really Grinds My Gears
I haven’t shared a “What Really Grinds My Gears” post in quite a while. It’s not because I had nothing to whine about. Rest assured, I will always have something to whine about. That’s why it’s called Lifesfinewhine and not EverythingIsPerfectAllTheTime©. Anyway, even though I haven’t whined in a while I felt it was time to do so today. I don’t know about you guys but WordPress’ latest changes have seriously been grinding my gears. So, let’s talk about them today. As well as some upcoming changes we have to look forward to. And that my friends, was sarcasm. Always, let’s get into it.
Also, just a little note. If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy rants- feel free to skip this post. I’m always brutally honest on here and I find writing to be a great way to release some pent up anger. So, this post is really just for me to let out some emotions more than anything else. If you are someone that enjoys a good rant, stick around.
WordPress’ Latest Changes
I’m sure most of you have notice the changes that have slowly but surely been happening on WordPress recently. I mean, they are unfortunately impossible to avoid. Now, I’m not stupid. I know change is necessary. Every platform makes changes and updates to make sure they are offering the best experience possible to their users.
The issue I have with the changes is that the changes WordPress is making currently, is not giving us the best experience possible. In fact, quite the opposite. This platform used to be simple to use and very enjoyable. It started with the Block Editor that they forced onto us. Not only was it completely unnecessary but it was so much harder to use than the good old Classic Editor.
For people that are tech savvy, I’m sure it wasn’t a big deal. They were most likely able to adapt and figure things out. But the thing is, many of the bloggers here are not super tech savvy. And many don’t want to waste time learning how to do everything all over again. Most of the bloggers here blog as a hobby and would rather do so in a simple way.
Back to the newer changes. WordPress is constantly playing around with their design and instead of making things better they’re just making this platform harder and harder to navigate. All because they want to move things around and change how the Reader looks. Talking of the Reader, did you notice that it’s just a symbol now and they’ve moved it to the right? Why even do that??
I’ve also noticed that that they’ve changed everything to mostly just symbols but they don’t even tell you what the symbols are for when you hover over the text. You just have to waste your time trying to figure things out which is so irritating and also quite inconvenient.
The Latest Changes To Look Out For
I recently read this post about Tumblr and WordPress. What can I say? This is a huge move and I can tell you in advance it’s going to cause an array of glitches for us. WordPress can’t even handle its platform as it is now. It’s become incredibly glitchy over the years. And now this? What in the world makes them think they could smoothly make a change this big? One time I downgraded from the Business Plan to the Premium Plan and they couldn’t even do that right. And I only had like a few posts on my site back then.
Unfortunately, it seems that WP doesn’t listen to their users much because if they did they would know this is a bad idea. All I can say is, please be prepared and report and glitches you notice. And share about those glitches on your blog so we can be on the lookout too.
Final Thoughts
This is pretty much it for me for now. I could go on and on about my grievances with this platform but neither you nor I have time for a post that long. But I will add this. WordPress was like a second home to me. It took me in when I was at my lowest and gave me hope. The bloggers I met here are not just random people behind a screen. To me, they’re my friends. People I enjoy interacting with. This is literally the only platform that doesn’t make me feel like crap when I logout. And it breaks my heart to see them destroy a platform that is close to the hearts of so many of us bloggers.
Have you noticed the recent changes made to WordPress? What are your thoughts on it? And how do you feel about Tumblr moving to WordPress? What’s grinding your gears today? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Or simply stop by and say hi!
I recently published my first book and would be very honoured if you took a minute to check it out here.
