I Just Had A Bit Of An Epiphany

I recently had a bit of an epiphany. So, I was just sitting down and scrolling through social media editing my manuscript when I had a bit of an epiphany. Being batshit crazy is the best thing you can be as a writer. Like seriously, think about it. As writers we have to be obsessive, hyper-vigilant, hyper sensitive and most likely very emotional or at least very connected with our emotions. If someone describes themselves as being all those things (especially obsessive) you would be like this person is a bit of red flag. Which I absolutely am. But as a writer all those qualities are so incredibly helpful. It helps you find even the slightest discrepancies in your writing, it helps you be connected with your characters.

Therefore, my conclusion is that most writers are a bit of a red flag and that’s okay! Okay, fine that’s not my conclusion it’s just what I say to make myself feel better. My actual conclusion is that we may see parts of ourselves as unwanted or red flags but they exist for a reason. Like if you met me in real life you would almost definitely think I’m weird. But as writer, my “quirks” help me so much. The good and the bad combine to make us who we are. And sometimes the bad stuff is a blessing in disguise. Keyword is sometimes so please universe stop sending me bad stuff. This is enough- I’ve learnt my lesson!

      THIS! I’ve been writing more fiction lately and my brain just does not shut up anymore. It’s like the characters talk constantly and then I’m like well I should write that down but I’m in the freaking shower 😅

        Girl!!! I’ve had whole partners be like, “Are you listening to one of your characters talking now?” cuz I’ll space out and just kinda ignore them. It has never been intentional, I was just trying to make sure I heard everything.

        And then, I’d quickly type it up on the notepad feature on my phone or rush to write it down. Lol. It sucks when you’re driving or in the bath or out with friends and you can’t cater to the characters at that time. 😆😂🤣

    I think writing, or creating any sort of art, is mostly about observation – really close observation. And if anyone looks really closely at anything for long, they will most likely go at least slightly insane sooner or later. So artists tend to look at things through the lens of insanity. It’s a bit of a chicken vs egg sort of thing ….. which comes first (the art or the madness) is hard to say, but certainly the two things go hand in hand

    It helps to be quite a character I guess, but I also think it takes so much work to actually be a good writer, work and dedication. I know lots of obsessive ppl with brilliant ideas yet lacking the work ethics. As well as ppl with great work ethics lacking ideas and/or dedication. It’s almost like simplifying it a bit, it’s never that black and white in reality

    That’s a great way of putting it, Pooja! I come from an extended family’s of mostly bkue collar but artistic red flags, basically! My mom was a real “starving artist”, not literally but she was an artist who raised me as a single mom and we were mostly poor and sometimes on welfare. But she also gardened (and taught me how) so we always had fresh produce at least. She also painted, wrote poetry (but not for pay) but did do occasional paid modeling and theater work and did jobs part time math tutering, and at times did custodial and warehouse work. While I was often bullied and made fun of by other kids I also learned a lot that most kids don’t and made friends. What’s always seemed weird and strangely inadequate to me was certian aspects of the mainstream “clean cut” American lifestyle… Lol!

    I absolutely agree. Most days.., okay, especially days when I’m writing, I realize that I tap into my characters emotionally and sometimes it takes a while to regain that feeling of being myself. And we are hypersensitive. No shame in that btw. I think have have multiple personality disorder, or at least something close to it 😜

      I do that too, I always thought I was weird for it but apparently it’s pretty common for creative people to be that connected with their characters/art. Lol I think us writers always have a lot of personalities living in our head 😅

    Writers as red flags. Yeah, I think that’s true. We bear red flags, at least. Obsessions or obsessiveness, as you say. But that our hard qualities might serve also makes sense. Plus eventually, I suppose, we air our eccentricities and in that cannot hide them, even for acceptability. Like hobbits going on adventures. In the USA, it’s Thanksgiving–so Happy Thanksgiving!

    wow this is a great epiphany actually… thanks i feel better with my red flags lol!! i dont write books but i should. when i worked at a restaurant i would make stories about the people who came in for example: a mother and her daughter and the daughter was really mad at her mom. i started to make a story.. more like “i think this is what’s happening to them right now” and went on and on until my cousin snapped me out of it like “CALM DOWN how are u making a story from just seeing these strangers fighting” LOL i only do that out loud to people im comfy with but im always doing it to myself in my head. 😬😬

BTW, on the subject of my review (er, I mean, your book), I believe I said that I consider it required reading for anyone who is dealing with someone experiencing depression. You’re so right that the traits we sometimes feel self-conscious about are often our greatest strengths as creatives. Being obsessive, hyper-sensitive, and emotionally connected is exactly what allows us to write stories and characters that feel real and impactful. Plus, who wants to be boring when you can be fascinatingly weird?
