Late In The Night

Late in the night

They roam the streets

Shunned by those that roam during the day

They are forced to live in secrecy

Blamed for who they are

Yet they have no choice in the matter

Late In The Night

One dreaded morning

As they lay asleep in their coffins

The townsfolk with their pitchforks

Left them a clear warning

Their formerly beautiful home now in disarray

They vowed to have their revenge

Late In The Night

They set out at night and not one person was spared

All that participated payed the ultimate price

A hundred years later the couple still celebrate their victory

Dancing on the graves of their enemies

Skin glowing in the moonlight, sharp fangs and red eyes

The townsfolk still call them monsters but they believe otherwise

Late In The Night

About “Late In The Night”:

Late In The Night is a response to fellow blogger, Kevin’s, No Theme Thursday prompt post for this week. The images used were created by him for NTT. Do check out his post for more prompts.

The poem was inspired by Kevin’s images. As soon as I saw them, the poem just hit me and I knew these images would work well together. I haven’t done a poetry post or a NTT response post in so long so this was really fun to do. And I’ve always been fascinated by anything to do with vampires so this was fun to write.

What did you think of the poem? Let me know in the comments below or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. amazing how an image can spark the imagination! nice job, Pooja.

    1. So true. And the fact that we can all look at the same image and think of completely different scenarios is really cool.

      1. great point. reminds me of the story of the blind men and the elephant…

        1. Oh yeah, so true. I guess how we picture things is very subjective.

  2. Townsfolk made a HUGE mistake not staking those monsters right away. Never threaten the undead, kill’em! 😀

    1. Lol yes! 😅

  3. Happy New Year Pooja

    1. Happy New Year to you as well.

  6. I think we are very similar in some areas Pooja//Visual imagery can be a good trigger for my poetry..plus:) vampires. A great image and really enjoyed your response. I guess it “takes one to know one”

    1. Yes, I think a lot of writers find visual imagery helpful. Of course, vampires are always fun to write/read about haha. Thanks!

  7. And nothing left but ghosts along the road…

  12. Gothic vampires now Pooj. What next?

    1. Werewolves?

  13. Love the dark poetry, Pooja. Vampire stories are always so good though. Well Done.

    1. Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja G. 😊

  14. That’s well done, Pooja. Great use of imagination.

    1. Thank you so much.

  15. I wonder what the ratio is of vampire stories where vampires had to choose to become a vampire verses stories in which they didn’t get to choose.

    1. That’s an interesting thought, I think more of them didn’t choose. I haven’t read a lot of books where the vampire chose to become a vampire.

      1. Maybe it didn’t become an optional part of the lore until “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” where the human also has to drink the blood of the vampire.

        1. True, I think before that it wasn’t optional. It was seen as humans having no say in the matter.

  16. Well done, Pooja. It’s amazing how an image can spark the imagination.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, it is and the fact that we all see something different in the same image/images is really cool.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja!

  17. Fantastic tale in poetic beauty, Pooja! 💞

    1. It was, it was like a fun writing exercise!

  20. This is a fun Gothic verse (if you don’t mind my putting those words together). I’m glad you enjoyed writing it. Night creatures revenging themselves on the daylight beings. That’s a good challenge on us, the daylight ones, to be open toward alternative folk.

    1. Thank you so much. That was exactly the message I hoped to portray, one of tolerating those that may be different than us.

  21. My new year resolution? Don’t go out at night in 2025. 🙂

    1. Interesting, any reason for that?

      1. Your poem indicated it was unsafe. 🙂 Just kidding!

        1. Lol it’s true though 🙂

  22. Spooky and good! Loved it 😊 Vampires are fun and I love the way you blended the images in with your poem!

    1. Thanks so much and yup always fun to write about vampires! 🧛
