You can be on a great health kick, have a comforting, clean bed with the perfect temperature in the room, no noise to bother you, no work in the morning, and still have a hard time sleeping. Why is that? Well, it could be many reasons, sometimes health-related. But it’s also true that now and again, our busy days can lead to overactive minds. In those instances, you may find it almost impossible to truly settle down as you want to.

It’s a sad state of affairs when that happens, because we often feel worried and uncomfortable in a place we’re supposed to feel the safest. Good rest shouldn’t have to feel like a negotiation with your own thoughts just because you’re overtired. Worse still, if you’re in this cycle, you may come to rely on it. Reaching out for your phone to distract you is a common substitute, but that only leads us to feel worse.

So, how do you soothe an overactive mind before bed? It’s not always easy. But there are ways to do it. Let’s explore those below:

Journal Or Read A Book

If your thoughts are in circle-running mode and they won’t stop, many people find that a good way to “get out of themselves” so to speak, is to give those thoughts a physical outlet. So for instance, you could try keeping a small notebook by your bed and writing down anything that’s on your mind, just make sure it’s not your phone. That helps if there’s a specific issue worrying you. Alternatively, you could pick up a real book, a physical one with pages to turn, because the act of focusing on a story can help pull your mind away from its own internal chatter and get you ready to rest. E-readers are fine too, just make sure they have an anti-white-light feature and keep them at low brightness.

Alternate Your Distractions Or Background

Your bedroom should be a place you rest, so try to avoid any distractions. You might try dimming the lights a bit more than usual, putting on some very soft, calming music. Or lighting a candle with a scent that makes you feel calm. If you usually have a TV on in the background, try some ambient music instead. There are also many long-form sleep videos on YouTube where you can listen to history read by someone with a soft voice, or relax to a guided meditation. If you need to focus on something, this can be a nice alternative, but without the active participation of note-taking or reading as we mentioned.

Consider Natural Aids

If your mind is still racing, you might find some comfort in natural supplements that are designed to help with relaxation. Herbals options like chamomile tea have been used for centuries to help people wind down. Some people have also started exploring products designed to help with a restful state, like THC CBD gummies before they get into bed. Such types of aids can help soothe the mind and body, making it easier to drift off to sleep when your brain needs it. Just be sure to consult with a doctor before adding any supplement to your diet.

With this advice on how to sooth an overactive mind before bed, I hope you can more easily soothe that overactive mind before bedtime.

  1. I have a rain-song or fire crackling soundtrack I use to help signal sleep time. I jot down things I’m worried I’ll forget the next day, read for a bit, then turn on the sound and turn out the lights. It helps me a ton!

    1. That’s a great routine, so glad it’s working for you!
