Three Ways To Instantly Get More Followers On WordPress

woman in pink dress using laptop computer | You Should NOT Be Making These Blogging Mistakes In 2025 | Three Ways To Instantly Get More Followers On WordPress | AEO

I know a lot of people on WordPress blog more as a hobby (legit almost typed hob more as a bloggy) and may not be particularly interested in growing their followers. However, I also know that a number of bloggers are looking to grow their following. Whether it’s because you would like to earn an income from blogging or just want more eyes on your content or something entirely different. Here are three ways to instantly get more followers on WordPress most of which are not too difficult to integrate into your blogging routine.

Activity

One of the fastest ways to grow your blog (and I’m speaking from experience here) is to be more active on WordPress. Like all algorithms, the WP’s algorithm wants one thing- for existing users to be more active on the platform. And to be clear, by active I don’t mean spamming people with comments to follow your blog or like ten to twenty of their posts in a couple of minutes. I mean, genuinely engaging with other blogs on WordPress.

Go through new blogs that you don’t already follow and leave genuine comments on them. Or at least leave a like (but read the post don’t randomly “like” posts you don’t actually like!). And of course, if someone takes the time to like or comment on one of your posts make sure you respond to the comment and if possible take the time to leave a comment or like on their content too.

This will help get your blog out there, increase your views and hopefully get you more followers if done correctly. And if nothing else, you’ll make some more online friends!

High Quality Content

Generally, people are much likely to follow your blog if you share high quality content that they can enjoy and interact with. If your content is so full of typos, spelling errors, grammatical errors etc. they are much less likely to engage with your content let alone follow your blog for more. And of course, we’re not perfect so some typos and errors do happen. That’s okay. But just make sure they’re not excessive to the point that your content becomes unreadable.

Tags And Categories

Using the correct tags and categories is one of the simplest and fastest ways to instantly get more followers on WordPress. I’ve done more indepth posts about this which I will link here but the gist of it is that you want to use relevant tags (10 or so) and categories (1 or 2) so that your content gets to people that are actually going to be interested in it.

For example, if you share recipes on your blog you want to get to people who enjoy finding new recipes by using tags like “recipes” or “easy and delicious recipes.” What you don’t want to do is use random tags like “poetry” because despite being a more popular tag, it will not get you to an audience interested in your particular content. I know it sounds far fetched but people really do misuse tags to that extent.

And it’s the same for categories. You want to use only one or two very relevant categories per post. Using too many will confuse the algorithm and you’ll end up being marked as “spam” even though you aren’t. Once the post is marked as spam, the algorithm will completely stop pushing it organically and your views will decrease.

However, if you use tags and categories correctly, the algorithm will sort your post properly and push it to the right audience. This will increase your views and consequently followers.

  1. Blogging has always been a hobby for me, hence I am not “in the game” for a million followers. As for quality content, my photography is in the amateur range but its so much fun! That’s what matters.

    1. In the end, it’s all about enjoying blogging and having fun!

      1. I agree! 🤙🏻

  2. Finished revision on TAGS AND CATEGORIES last night. Doing a bit of audit on my blog and plan. Even contacted the Happiness engineers for advice. When I resume university, this blog will be a part of my business. Also means I will go through a lot of my content and re-edit

    1. Oh great, that really helps a lot with getting posts to the right audience.

  3. Love that you are always helping the community. Great guidance, Pooja!

    1. Happy to help!

  4. Great post Pooja! I feel like people like to read these posts that can be super helpful. I totally agree that being active is half the battle and making connections with other bloggers.

    1. Thank you so much, so glad they’re helpful!

  5. Thanks for the info

    1. Happy to share it.

  6. Hobbing as a bloggy certainly has a ring to it.

    1. Haha yes it kind of does 🙂

  7. Very helpful and informative. Thank you Pooja. (I think I was introduced to your blog by Stephanie/Singing Gecko on her blog, so that’s another way to grow!)

    1. Glad to hear that! Oh nice, Stephanie’s blog is one of my favourites and she’s so sweet too.

  9. Here is my genuine comment on your blog! 😂 but your tips are spot on. I try to find like-minded blogs, comment on a post or two, and then follow them. Usually I’ll get at least one or two follows back. It has become a fun morning routine to check out all the new material that gets posted!

    1. Haha yesss that’s how it’s done! That’s great, definitely a good way to grow your blog and meet more people.

  10. I agree that the algorithm favors active bloggers. Traffic went up a lot when I posted 4 times in one week. I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks and traffic is down.

    1. Yup, for sure. The more often you post the more it’ll push out your content. When I posted daily for a year some years back I had the most traffic.

      1. That’s very interesting!

  11. I need to learn more about tags and categories.

    1. Tags and categories make a huge difference, we have to be careful which ones we use and how many. Very true, taking an interest in other blogs also helps our own gain traction. Thanks so much.

  12. Reading and responding genuinely this is something worth considering. When you look for being in the blogging for longterm you go the healthy way.

    Thank you for sharing Pooja!

    1. Yes, connecting with real people is truly amazing!

  15. Thank you for the advice Pooja. I started blogging to draw attention to my Leonberger book but since then blogging has become a hobby. However, as you know, I still want to grow my audience.

    1. Happy to share it. Yes, I think a lot of hobby bloggers actually are looking to grow their audience too.

  16. I have been 50 followers away from 3,000 for years now

    1. I see, that’s interesting. Have you actively been trying to gain more followers or are you blogging more just to put content out and enjoy the process?

  17. Great tips. Thanks for sharing.

I find it hit or miss. I guess I am not one with the algorithm yet, lol.
YouTube seems to be the same way.
It is like the Snoopy cartoon where he writes a letter to his editor and says: Gentlemen, regarding the recent rejection slip you sent me, I think there might of been some misunderstanding. What I really wanted was for you to publish my story and send fifty thousand dollars. Didn’t you realize that?

    1. Lol, I feel that letter from Snoopy. Sometimes I want to do the same.

YT is pretty random, with videos it’s more about using trending sounds and clickbait titles but even with that it’s a hit or miss.

      Thanks so much.

  18. Dear PJ,

Your post came across as both insightful and practical. What I really liked was how you emphasized genuine engagement instead of just chasing numbers. In today’s blogging world, it’s easy to forget that real connections matter more than algorithm tricks. Your reminder about leaving thoughtful comments and building conversations felt very authentic and refreshing.

I also appreciated the clarity with which you explained the importance of tags and categories. Many of us overlook these basics, but the way you simplified it made it sound so easy to apply.

High quality content and consistency yes, these truly are the backbone of a blog. Reading your post felt like listening to a friendly mentor who wants others to succeed too.

Thank you for sharing these tips in such a grounded and encouraging manner. Looking forward to reading more of your blogging advice posts. 🙏

    Warm regards,
    Vijay Srivastava

    1. Thank you so much. I’m so glad the post resonated so deeply with you. Really appreciate you reading it 🙏

  19. In the beginning, every new person that followed my blog mattered. Now I’m ambivalent. Not bothered either way.

    1. Yeah, I’ve become much less concerned with growing my blog now too. I think I’m happy with where it’s at.

      1. You have a wonderful blog Pooja. 🌷🌷🌷

        1. Thanks, you do as well 😊

          1. 😍😍😍

  20. Cheers Pooj!

  21. Thanks for saying not to spam like posts. Nothing gets my goat more than to be online and get notified that someone has liked a post, only to see that someone went through and liked 20 posts in 30 seconds 🙁

    1. It happens once every week or two and pisses me off so much. Them just leaving a genuine comment would be so much more effective compared to spam liking a bunch of posts.

    Some good advice.

  23. Excellent advice, Pooja. I feel an active blog with quality content will draw followers. Also, as you mention, proper use of categories and tags will give the blog more clarity. I’ve seen blogs without categories, making it difficult to navigate, therefore, I hesitate to follow.
My stats slipped when I ended my weekly prompt, however, since I have more time to get around to new blogs, I have gained new followers.
I blog for fun, and though I like to meet bloggers with like interests, I’m not concerned about having a huge audience. 💕

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, I very much agree. I think the prompt was fun but if that’s no longer bringing you joy then even if your traffic decreases it’s okay to have ended it. The main thing is enjoying what we’re doing. 💗

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. ❣️

  24. Very insightful.

Sometimes you try so many techniques and they don’t work. I think the best approach is to keep writing and not be bothered about followers… You once posted about genuinely being interested in other people’s posts… To read them carefully and comment… I think for me, that’s a treasure of advice that has always worked. Unfortunately, it’s not easy making time to read other people’s posts and comment.

    1. Thank you. Yes, I agree. It can be time consuming but going into other posts can be a lot of fun.

      1. You’re welcome ♥️Pooja♥️

  25. Love this advice! I need to take a look back through my tags and do a clean up soon. 💜

    1. Thank you so much and good luck with that! 💕

  26. Oops! I’m totally not the guy that uses the “poetry” tag on every single one of his poems! Nope not at all! 😬😂 Thank you so much for helping me make a new correction on that! Though I personally blog as a hobby, I definitely still want to get more eyes on it. So these are fantastic as always! 👍

    1. Lol this is your sign to start using the tags more! Thank you so much 😊

  27. I’ve never been concerned about how many followers I have Pooja as I write for my own enjoyment. But I was surprised when people began to follow me and comment long ago and it opened up opportunities for me to take a look at their pages and find a whole new world of thought there. I think I’ve been benefited more by reading other bloggers work than composing and constantlly editing my own work. Even when I eventually put up my work for public viewing I constantly revisit it and edit afterward. 🙂

    1. Yeah, once we start interacting with other blogs it can be a lot of fun to do. 🙂

  28. I wasn’t aware of that info on the categories, thank you! 💞

    1. Happy to share it and hope it helps! 💕

  29. Sounds like good advice. You’re a fine, very clear writer 🌹

    1. Thank you so much. 😊

  30. I don’t think I’d heard of selecting categories before, is it something that can be done on WordPress website when editing and not on the jetpack app? 🤔 Thanks for the tips, always handy! And I love your recent poem, you’re right, writing is very freeing and worries drift away when the words are flowing. Its like a whole other state of mind! ☺️✨️

    1. Yeah, I don’t use the app and only use WordPress on my primary browser. The categories option is generally located on the right hand side of the post when it’s a draft and it should be right about above the tags section. Thank you and yes exactly, it’s like meditation in some ways! 😊

  31. Definitely trying to grow my following again so this is perfect! Thank you Pooja

    1. Thank you, hope this helps!

  32. Great advice. I’ve fallen off track. But I like the idea of blogging as a hobby.

    1. Thanks so much. I have too a little as I don’t have the time/energy to post as much or be as active.

  33. I always appreciate your blogging tips, Pooja. You do such a great service to us in the community by sharing your knowledge and experience. The bloggers who like ten posts in a couple of minutes and encourage you to follow their sites are so annoying. Hard pass on those…

A tip I learned from another site is to use links in your posts to refer people back to older posts, and I notice you do that quite a bit, too. On my blog, whenever I share a song by a band I’ve featured before, I embed a link to a previous post on them, in their name on the current post. Some people check out the old posts and many don’t, but it’s there for those who are interested.

Thanks again for all you do to support the blogging community. WP should put you on a retainer! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! Haha yes, those spammers are very annoying and that’s definitely not the way to grow your following.

That’s very true, linking back to older posts helps get people to those too. It may not be a lot of people going to those but it’s still better than nothing.

      1. You’re welcome! Yes, that practice doesn’t bring me in, for sure.

In reality not that many people seem to click back, but I like the ongoing and interlinked record it creates.

        1. It’s also good for SEO to have links that link back to similar posts.

          1. I was already doing it at the time, but I think it was that SEO guest post you recently hosted that told me the value! 😅

            1. Oh yes, that mentioned the important of backlinks!

              1. It took a moment to recall that it was on your site! So much content out there! 😅

                1. For sure, we read so many posts daily it’s hard to remember exact where we read something sometimes 😅

                  1. Exactly! 😅

  34. This was a awesome post by you. I will most definitely work on my tags and categories. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it.

  35. Good advice 👍👍

    1. Thank you 🙏

  36. That’s right, stay active and keep writing!

    1. Yup, for sure!

  37. Dear Pooja Ji,
I have such manual type writer Remington at my home.
I will share the photo later.
Thanks for liking my post Walk

    1. That’s very cool, yes please share a picture of it if you can.

  38. I like your blogging advice posts because it is sort of a refresher course for me. You know that moment when you say, oh yeah that’s right. That’s me lol. Thank you Pooj.

    1. Thank you so much. Haha glad to hear that, it’s always important to refresh the basics.

  39. You gave me this same advice many years ago, Pooja, and I believe you are right about it. Like all relationships, we become closer to people we know, and getting to know them through blogging is talking to one another. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, I absolutely agree.

  40. Thanks Pooja for your valuable post👏👏👏👍👍👍

    1. Happy to share it 😊

  41. Love these tips!

  43. Interesting read. Curious to know which of these three made the biggest difference for you personally?

    1. Thanks, being active is what has helped most. And SEO.

  44. Great advice. I need all i can get… thank you!

    1. Thanks, hope it helps!

  45. This is a wonderful blog. I just started my blog and found that interacting with blogs that I have been enjoying has been rewarding! I follow other artists or people that have entirely different lives from mine. They compel me to read and make a comment. Thank you for sharing this advice. It is a reminder to keep up what I am doing!!

    1. Yes, interacting with other blogs helps a lot with growth and also just having fun with blogging! Happy to share it and yes you’re definitely on the right path so keep going!

  46. Blogging is a nice hobby. The fun gets destroyed by professionalising it. People, we know who naively try to earn money by blogging earn so little that they could be much more successful working without blogging.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think it depends on how much of an audience someone has as well as other factors because there are people that make a considerable amount blogging while there are also those that make very little.

  47. Wow i really liked that blog!

    1. Thanks so much!

  48. This is a good post. Thank you for your guidance. It’s the nuance to the system that slows a lot of progress. Posts like these can help people build their sites (well, at least, I hope!)

    1. Thanks so much, I hope so too!

  49. Thank you for the excellent suggestions.

    1. It’s my pleasure. Hope they help.

  50. True, all of that.

    1. Thanks so much.

  51. Thank you for the good advise

    1. Happy to share it. Hope it helps.

  54. Thank you so much for this wonderful post. I’ve learned so much from it, especially as someone who’s still new to the blogging world. I really appreciate the guidance and insight you’ve shared.

    1. I’m so glad to hear that and I hope the tips help.

    1. You’re very welcome.

  55. My instinct has always been to post, post, post. But lately I’ve been trying to be more active on the site and take in other creator’s perspectives. Post to a community needs to be a conversation, not a lecture.

    1. Yeah, I think for most of us the initial instinct is to focus on posting but I think socialising and having conversations is a lot more fun plus helps us grow.

  56. Thanks for the direction. I have been posting for a couple years now and for the most part, just for my personal thoughts, but I am trying to steer it more to an income.

    1. Thanks so much. I think it’s totally possible to make an income off blogging as well, I have a few posts about that. But the main thing is to focus on growth and increasing traffic.

  57. Would love to subscribe and connect with anyone willing. But also interact with and engage with your work. Feel free to check out my WordPress site if you feel inclined to do so! I look forward to meeting everyone!

  58. Adding to my to do list.

    1. Hope it helps.

        1. You’re very welcome.

  59. Getting back into blogging. I blogged fairly heavily on the MySpace platform, Have had 3 websites over 15 years, mostly for my business. Now (semi) retired, I am looking forward to this “new” hobby (of mine… my wife says I have too many hobbies. Is that possible?).

    1. Definitely no such thing as too many hobbies, they keep life fun. Hope you’re enjoying getting back into blogging.

  60. Thanks for sharing! The bit about using tags and categories correctly is certainly helpful! I am always baffled by what to put there! 🙂

    1. Happy to share it and glad it was helpful! 🙂

  62. I have been on WordPress for years, but I often just posted and disappeared because the Reader felt difficult to navigate and engage with.

At a time when everything is shifting toward video, I have felt a strong pull back to writing, which I truly enjoy, so I am embracing it.

Thank you for these tips, especially the reminder to engage with other people’s posts. I want to be more intentional about reading, responding, and learning from the community here rather than just scrolling past.

    1. I totally understand, the Reader has become much more difficult to use and has multiple glitches. I’m glad you’re back though and wishing you the best with your blogging journey.

  63. Fantastic post! Thank you for the insights. I have been working on strengthening the tags on our posts.

    1. That’s great, tags are really important!

  64. I needed this

  65. Thank you for this post. I did not think about the engagement part until recently, which is why I started looking for bloggers to follow.
