What Would You Do For A Hundred Million?

a woman lighting up a cigarette while lying on the floor | What Would You Do For A Hundred Million?

I lay by the fire

My hand in yours

Smiling

Watching

Knowing that I

Had finally found

My happily ever after

Your chest rises and falls

Your breathing getting more shallow

And eventually your body stills

No more sound or movement

I sigh in relief

What would you do for a hundred million?

I know my answer.

About “What Would You Do For A Hundred Million?”:

I’ve always found morals and ethics to be a fascinating thing. I took two semesters of Philosophy in university and even before I did that, it’s something I have been interested in. Personally, I feel among humans we can find both extremes. Extremely moral people and extremely immoral people. However, as a collective I believe the majority of us are less moral than we think. There are almost always exceptions to our beliefs. For example, many people will make exceptions for close friends and family members when they do something morally questionable or even just morally wrong. And it’s sometimes hard to criticise them for that, it’s a very human thing to do.

Anyway, my point is (before I continue to ramble on about morals and ethics because I could do that for hours) that we are capable of much more harm than we think. And that begs the question, what would you do for the right amount?

  1. …they will get the Batman that they deserve 😉

    1. Haha I think that’s the best way to use the money 😅

      1. Pretty hard to leverage me anymore. I don’t need much and I accept gratefully what I have missed out on. It’s pretty clear what path aligns with my values and a lot of pain can only result in compassion. Compassion sometimes is about being unmovable.

  2. I would buy a $2 lottery ticket. That’s probably about it 😉

    1. Lol that’s fair, I would probably get my second degree and save the rest 😅

      1. Oh, did you mean what would we do if we had 100 million? I thought you meant what would I do to get a 100mil.
If I had a 100mil, I’d retire, buy a house and have a lawn and garden to keep me occupied 😀

        1. That would be a good way to spend it 😁

  3. Hauntingly beautiful 🖤

    1. Thank you so much 💗

  4. Have to share, right?

    1. Seriously, though. That is too much money, even in this day and age. Remember the old saying that I’d settle for half in cash? I’d be happy with 5% after taxes in cash…

      1. Lol definitely, I would love even just one million.

  5. The only thing that stops us from committing evil acts is our internal compass.

    1. Yes, I fully agree.

      1. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  6. I knew that there was a dark, “hey, you’re dying, and I’m not” twist coming. 😉

    1. Lol you know my poetry too well 😅

  7. Wow – powerful from the title on down. You are right that we can justify an awful lot! Well done, Pooja!

    1. Thanks so much and yes we can and oftentimes do, most people have a price.

  8. I don’t want one hundred million and prefer to just keep to myself…

    1. Peace is worth more than all that money for sure.

      1. One hundred percent!

  9. What would I do? What wouldn’t I do? lol establish my future!

    1. Haha yes, you’d be set for life!

  10. Hi, Pooj. Perhaps it depends on the value one puts on money vis-à-vis other important things in life.

    1. Very true and also depends on the circumstances I think. If you’re in a situation where you really need the money, like if a loved one is sick and needs medical care, you’re more likely to put more importance on money.

      1. Yap. I guess the ultimate dilemma or moral test, could be selling one’s soul or murder as hinted in your piece.

  11. 🙏🌹

    1. So true, some things don’t have a price. Happiness and peace can’t be bought. I look at all the millionaires and billionaires out there and they honestly seem to have miserable lives in my opinion. I wouldn’t want that.
Ted Bundy was so incredibly manipulative, he was terrifying for that reason. Most people couldn’t see the evil inside because he knew how to behave and act like a victim to gain their sympathy. He lied all his life, even at the end when he “confessed”. Some of it was true and some wasn’t.

  13. My moral compass goes further askew every time another zero is added.
Seriously though, for family, no money is needed.
Anything else, the price starts at 1 billion. A man could wipe the slate clean for that kind of paper.
Just ask any top politician. 🤣
Btw.. that was a bloody great poem, Pooja.

    1. Yup, so true- you can get away with anything if you have enough money 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks so much 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja

  14. Morality can be tricky as they say, you can’t legislate morality and it depends on the person. most normal people (normal is tough too) will hover around the set of cultural norms but when you start to get into specific morality there are many shades of grey. I liked the poem.

    1. Yeah, for sure a lot of grey areas in between. I don’t think anyone is truly all good or all bad. It just depends on circumstances. Although, of course some people are more bad or more good than others.

  15. I was not expecting the ending of the poem but it is an accurate ending as people will kill for money.

    1. Yeah, a lot of people will do anything for the right price.

  16. How about you just give me 1 million and we forget the whole thing. Wonderful poem. 🤣😎🙃

    1. Lol that would work for me as well. Thanks 😅

  17. in the light of recent news human life costs a lot less… sadly you can’t stop ignorance from making those mistakes that end up costing many lives, too many i would say…

    1. Yeah, it seems having enough money and power can help you get away with anything.

      1. You are reading my mind. Back in the day it was sort of disguised just in case, while now no one is ashamed to do what they think is best

        1. Yeah, they would at least keep things private but now everything bad is broadcasted and we’re left to stew in it because we can’t do anything to stop it.

          1. My inlaws are in Minneapolis, and it looks real scary. I hope they find a solution before we come for a family get together next month

            1. Oh no, I’ve been seeing that on the news it’s really bad there. I truly hope so and I hope they’re safe.

              1. They are safe but the situation is pretty bad

                1. Hopefully it’ll calm down soon although to be honest it does seem to be escalating.

                  1. This is what I hear

  18. Your lyrics made me reflect on the limits of morality and what we are capable of doing under certain circumstances. The combination of tenderness and horror at the end really hits hard; it invites us to question our own decisions and values. Thank you for sharing something so provocative and profound.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, I think we’re capable of more good and bad than we think. It just depends on the circumstances.

      1. I completely agree. Life shows us that we can surprise ourselves, for better or for worse, depending on how we face circumstances.

  19. The poem was wonderful. I am already a happy person, so there are many things I would not do for a $100 million dollars. My remaining time is valuable, so I would only do something I wanted to do anyway which makes the question less interesting than it would have been in my youth!

    1. That’s totally fair, by a certain point in life we just want to life a happy and peaceful life.

  20. For me, it boils down to what I wouldn’t do. Otherwise, it depends on the person. Love you poem, Pooja!

    1. Yeah, that totally makes sense. Thanks so much 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  21. Can I take the hundred million in cheese?

  22. This really got under my skin—in a good way. It starts so soft and familiar, almost like a memory you want to stay in, and then it turns without warning. That moment of relief is chilling because it feels uncomfortably human. I like that you don’t try to justify anything or explain it away—you just leave us alone with the question. And that question is honest. We all like to think we know our limits, but do we really? This poem doesn’t accuse, it mirrors. It just quietly asks us to be truthful with ourselves, and that’s what makes it work.

    1. Thanks so much, I’m so glad it resonated.

  23. Some honest observations here. Sometimes the promised reward tempting comes with disastrous unforeseen results

    1. Yes, that does happen sometimes.

  24. I like the poem. It is very thought provoking. I think we are born with a certain level of empathy which leads to a basic moral compass. I worked with a guy who said it was not worth stealing anything unless it was at least $10M in cash (would be about 20M in today’s money) My parents always knew when I was up to something, so I am certain I would get caught so no crime for me, lol.

    1. Thanks so much. True, I think most of us are born that way but apparently parenting style makes a difference with how much empathy we retain. I would probably admit it to my parents, I tell them everything lol.

  25. I like the poem. I have always thought that there is more to life than we make it seem. These days i hardly judge people’s decisions. As much as anyone can be extremely wrong morally, i try to understand the situation because we do not know what we would do if we were in their shoes.

    1. Thank you so much. I’m the same way, I always try to put myself in their shoes. Maybe if desperate enough we may do the wrong thing as well.

  26. I’d get out of bed

    1. That’s fair lol.

  27. Chilling poem! I love it. I don’t know if there’s anything I’d for a million dollars. Maybe go on a game show lol.

    1. Thanks so much. This is your sign to go on Wheel I guess lol.

  28. I like your question “What would you do for right amount?” and yes, we humans are more complex than we think…it doesn’t have to be money as an incentive, human beings will hurt each other just on the word of another. For me, that is profound!

    1. Thanks so much. Absolutely, humans seem to not be able to stop themselves from hurting one another.

  29. I’m so glad you have the courage to say the quiet part out loud that I think most of us are too afraid to admit. I know I was a long time ago. Then I did some things that I regretted later. I thought to myself, (Quite literally in the past) I would absolutely never do X, Y, or Z! Only to find myself later doing the very things I criticized others for later. So yeah, in all honesty, without keeping myself grounded in order, then I would turn chaotic and not do the right thing with that hundred million. As long as I’m not fearful of facing that reality, then maybe I could do something good with it given the chance.

    1. Thanks so much. I think we’ve all had those experiences where we surprise ourselves and anyone who thinks they would do the right thing 100% of the time isn’t being fully honest with themselves. Being realistic with ourselves is important and honestly I think (I hope) many of us would try to do good with that much money.

  30. Love when you’re dark and diabolical! 😀

    1. I do too 🤭

  31. Yikes! 💞 So well written, Pooja!

    1. Thank you! 💕

  32. I liked the poem but it felt familiar… Anyway, I would never do anything that would be wrong to receive money. My moral standing with God is important to me.

    1. That’s great, it’s important to have strong morals. Thanks so much.

  33. Good poem, Pooja.

    1. Thank you so much.

  34. what is ethics and morality? it is different by person. I heard once you can’t legislate morality.

    1. Yeah, I think that’s right. Everyone has their own morals/ethics.
