Surviving Sue By Dr. Vicki Atkinson Review

Summary

“Surviving Sue” is a heart-wrenching story about the torment of keeping secrets, told from the daughter’s perspective. She navigates her mother’s mental health and addiction issues, while trying to shield and protect her disabled sister. “Surviving Sue” is about the power of storytelling to build resiliency, and a guidebook for others who struggle with complex family issues including Alzheimer’s, depression, alcoholism, developmental and physical disabilities.

About The Author

Vicki is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a leadership and life coach in private practice. My Thoughts On Surviving Sue By Dr. Vicki Atkinson

Surviving Sue By Dr. Vicki Atkinson

I recently finished reading Surviving Sue by Dr. Vicki Atkinson. I’ve been trying to read more non-fiction this year and this book has been one of the very few non-fiction books I’ve read that I absolutely could not put down. Genuinely, the book is touching, heartbreaking, and so much more.

In this book, Dr. Vicki walks us through her life and experiences of growing up with a mother (Sue) that suffered from alcoholism and Munchausen by proxy among other mental health issues and later in life suffered from Alzheimer’s. She also talks about how this affected her elder sister Lisa who suffered from disabilities and it’s largely speculated that these disabilities were caused by Sue drinking and/or taking drugs during her pregnancy with Lisa. Dr. Vicki also talks about her other family members such as her dad and her aunts who played a major role in a lot of their life.

The book was well written and didn’t have language that was complicated to understand. It wasn’t too long either, a pretty average length in my opinion.

What Stood Out To Me

There were a couple of things that stood out to me that I wanted to include in the review. The first thing that really stood out to me and was I think the reason I found the book so easy to finish was that Dr. Vicki approached the entire situation with so much empathy, love, and compassion. It didn’t come from a place of anger or resentment. She genuinely tried to understand things from Sue’s point of view too as to why she behaved the way that she did despite Sue harbouring a lot of resentment toward her. She also had a lot of empathy for other family members too.

One of the sections that stood out to me was about disordered eating habits. Because that was something I could strongly relate to. Especially the binging on “bad” food and then starving yourself because of the guilt. It’s something I experienced when I was younger. And I think a lot of people especially women have dealt with disordered eating patterns.

As someone that has dealt with a family member having dementia, I found reading the parts about Sue surffering from Alzheimer’s relatable and heartbreaking. Dr. Vicki did so much for her despite everything and made sure her final years were as comfortable as could be. I don’t know if I could have done that for someone who I had such a complicated relationship with.

Overall

Overall, the book was very well written and easy to finish. I sat down to read a couple of chapters and literally finished the entire book. If you’re looking for a non-fiction read or a memoir, I would recommend Surviving Sue by Dr. Vicki Atkinson. It’s written in a way that’s both emotional and yet detached from more negative emotions/blame. She’s done a lot of work to heal and be in a better place. Genuinely, would strongly recommend the book.

  1. One thing I have learnt in the last 30 years as a reader is that we have only so many reading hours and there is so much good reading material out there.

I vaguely remembered a WP friend posting vignettes a while back about a dysfunctional fam including a Mom named Sue, she was working on pulling them together. I lost track of her…you know how it is, you miss a day and 50 notifications go sailing by unread 😑😂 So glad to hear she did it and her book is out there 👏 Def on TBR based on your review and from what I recall were some very interesting stories…

    1. What a cool coincidence! Yay, I would recommend adding her latest book, Slivers, on your TBR too now that this post brought you back to her writing 😀

  4. This book sounds interesting, I can tell that it’s very personal and trauma depicting, complex trauma if I may assume. Vicki, I am so sorry it happened but glad you made a personal break thru leaving the past in the past, or at least trying to.

  9. That sounds very interesting. I have just read Alcohol Explained by William Porter and that was a very good read. You would think science might have this cracked by now. Addiction takes a terrible toll.

    1. Addiction is such a terrible thing. A lot of it stems from PTSD.

  10. That sounds like a tough book to read, to be honest. I’m glad that the author was able to overcome so many obstacles though.

  15. Dr. Vicki and Pooja <3 … This review touched me deeply. Thank you for honoring stories like this – the ones born from complicated families, invisible wounds, and the kind of resilience you don't choose but grow anyway. Your reflections on empathy, healing, and the courage it takes to face generational pain were especially meaningful.

Wishing peace to every reader who sees pieces of their own history in these pages. And thank you for shining light on a book that reminds us survival is not just possible, but powerful. Definitely on my TBR and really close to home in so many ways that any material I can learn from will help heal my family's trauma bonds ~ Bless you both 💛✨☀️

    2. Thank you so much. I’m so sorry you grew up like that too, many of us can related and come from complicated family dynamics. I hope you find the book as inspiring as I did when you give it a read. 💗

  16. An excellent review Pooja !
I also admire your commitment to read more non fiction. I find it hard to do this as my reading time is precious unwinding, relaxing time but I’m tempted to read this book following your review. Thank you 🙏

    1. Thank you so much! Non-fiction books are harder to get into sometimes but what I’ve realised is that it’s more about which books you pick. Books on topics you find interesting written by great writers like this one are much easier to get into and finish 😊

  17. Excellent review of Vicki’s book Pooja! I know she appreciates your warm words of truth. 💖 Thanks for sharing my friend.

    1. Thank you so much, more than happy to share the review! 💗

  19. Such a great review of Vickie’s book, Pooja! It’s in my reading pile.. that is if I can ever get to that. 💕😂😹

  20. Great review! Sue suffering from Alzheimer’s is interesting, as there’s not always much information on what’s it’s like to live with someone with this horrible illness. Sounds like a real, moving read that isn’t afraid to delve into the depths of human experience! 🌸
