Followed In The Night

low angle view of man standing at night

Followed in the night

Hands in my pockets

Are we alone?

Is there someone that can help?

Footsteps grow faster

Breathing becomes heavier

I clutch the keys in my pocket

And turn around ready to strike

“I think you dropped this”

He hands me my credit card

And walks away

About The Poem

I know I usually post blogging advice on Tuesdays but unfortunately I didn’t get any sleep last night and I am not in the right place to write a longer post. That’s why I thought I would share a poem instead. I’ll post the advice post tomorrow. Since it’s October, the spookiest month of the year, I thought I would share something horror themed. “Followed In The Night” was something that randomly came to me so I went with it. As always, I like adding a little twist to the end so instead of my usual darker twists I added something lighter this time. Change is good lol.

I’ve been followed a few times in my life. The most recent was when I went to get my haircut. I was a little lost and thought maybe I was being paranoid so I went to a few different floors to see if he would keep following me. He did. He didn’t even go into any of the other offices or anything. So I pushed the button for the elevator, let him get in, pretended to get a call and took the stairs lol. Then I went straight to the security guard who helped me get to the salon. Luckily I always have my guard up especially when I’m alone. Be safe out there guys and pay attention to your surroundings.

Have you ever been followed? Should I share more stories of other times I was followed? Do you like October? Are you a fan of horror? Let me know in the comments below.

Edit: Does everyone else’s Reader also look different?

  1. Can’t count the number of times I’ve been followed. I always shake ’em though.

    1. That sucks but glad you’re able to get rid of them.

  2. I’ve never been followed that I know of. I’ve heard plenty of horror stories about friends who were followed and it is very scary. Always keep your guard up.

    1. Glad it’s never happened to you but I think it is something that happens quite often unfortunately. I am surprised it happened in Kenya though because it’s quite safe here especially where I live. Yes, never let your guard down especially if you are alone.

  3. I’m so sorry that happened to you! I’ve been followed several times myself and once in Chicago I was nearly abducted. That’s an extremely unpleasant story. Earlier this year (as you’ve probably read) I had a break in where a man stood over my son and I (while I was in my underwear) in my bedroom in the middle of the night. It was a terrifying tale. I took my safety into my own hands and I applied for my conceal carry license. It was the best decision I ever made for myself. As for October… I have once a week stories I’m posting ALL month long that are spooky in nature. This week’s was soooo fun, next week will blow this week’s story out of the water. The best part? They’re all true! 😱😳😅 hopefully you’ll have some down time to check them out. 🥰❤️

    1. Thanks. Wow, that sounds terrifying so glad you weren’t abducted. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have so many scary experiences. But I am glad you’re taking steps to keep yourself and your family safe.
Ooh that’s awesome but also scary! I will definitely stop by soon! 😊

  4. I wonder why you weren’t able to sleep.
I hope something is bothering you too much.
Please don’t take too much stress buddy.
Also, I like October as it’s my birth month, and also some good anime come around this month.
This year, it’s bit different as I’m very busy since last week. So I’m not getting any time for blogging or read other’s work(there are few exceptions however).
    Do you know self defence?🙂
I’m glad that you are safe.

    1. No I just have bad sleep sometimes. I’m used to it though don’t worry. October is a great month. Hopefully you’ll be less busy soon.
I do know some self-defence that I can use if need be.

  5. I’m definitely a fan of horror stories. It’s funny because, while I might not have ever actually been followed in real life, I’m still often paranoid about being watched/spied on or being attacked (all irrational things, pretty much).

    1. I get paranoid too but I think it’s a good thing because that paranoia has kept me safe when I was actually in dangerous situations. Glad it’s never happened to you but still be careful.

  6. We just bought both of our daughters a thing called Birdy online, that is a keychain you pull and it let’s out a piercing alarm and flashes lights, plus stabby cats.

    1. Wow, that’s so interesting. I’ll look it up and see if it’s available here.

  7. Nice one! Spooktastic!

    1. Thank you!

  8. also isn’t it ridiculous the precautions women must take compared to men?

    1. Yes, it truly is. Most men would never have to worry about the things we are constantly worried about. They wouldn’t even think of someone following them.

  9. Oh I’ve never been followed but the incident with you sounds scary 😧.
Also loved the poem, especially that twist!!

    1. It was definitely scary but luckily I was prepared. Thanks so much!

  10. Nice one, Pooja.

    I’ve never been followed.
And yes, i like October 💗
About horror… I am not really a fan!

    1. Glad it’s never happened to you. Thanks! 😊

  11. I’ve never been followed before. Mostly because I rarely go out, lol. And I like the nice twist at the end of the poem. It puts minds at ease.

    1. Lol I rarely go out as well I think I just have bad luck. Thanks so much.

  12. I was followed a couple of times. I also used the phone as a safety guard. Stay safe and take care Pooja 💪🏻
I love autumn in general! The chilly weather and the smell of the earth, it makes me feel nostalgic.

    1. Glad you were able to stay safe in those situations. It’s lucky we have phones now. Stay safe too!
Autumn is definitely so lovely. I love the rain too.

  13. I like the poem.
And please sleep well. Your health is very important.
It’s scary when someone followed you. I’m glad you are fine now and handle that situation very well.

I have been followed by a guy who had been Ten times elder than me. I was going to my house by bicycle after my tution and he started following me and doing some hand action ( basically he wants me to go with him) he has earphones in his ears and maybe talking to someone. So, I hide between the cars so, that he cannot see me but he did. And i was really scared that was the first time when someone is following me. But then I saw my dad and quick go to him and tell that he is following me when he saw that he quickly run away .
    That was it.

    1. Thanks. I have slight insomnia so some nights aren’t great.

Wow that’s so scary. Glad your dad was around and the person following you went away. Stay safe.

      1. My pleasure✨

Yes, well after that incident I learn self defense ( Taekwondo)

        1. Oh that’s good. It’s always a good idea to know self-defence.

  14. Edit: Does everyone else’s Reader also look different? Yes, it does it does look from the desktop and I don’t like it. I noticed looked different today.

Btw, your poem is spooky and it was chilling to read. I am impressed by how quickly you wrote this. I follow you….. on WordPress. Pun intended. 😆

    1. Yeah I don’t like the new look either. I don’t understand why they got rid of the old one. I have never heard anyone complain about it. Can’t wait to see all the glitches this new look comes with.

      Thanks haha 😜

      1. I agree. The old layout was better and the new layout just looks weird. I noticed that they removed the search bar from the reader itself which is frustrating. It seems like the WP engineers (or whatever they’re called) can’t leave wildlife alone. 😓

        1. It’s definitely not a great layout and the Search button was the first thing I noticed that irritated me. I usually search blogs I look through regularly and this makes it more annoying. I’m also experiencing a glitch already which is fun. 😔

          1. For me, it was the like button. In the notifications, the like button is the same star an looks like ★ But if you go to like someone’s comment via the reader the star does not change. Only difference is that it looks like this ☆1 instead of ★1 which is hard for me to read 😑 I think whoever changed this needs to be fired.

I am sorry that you are experiencing glitches. You did say that you were anticipating them and I think this confirms that you are a psychic lol 😅

            1. I noticed that too but mine went back to normal so it didn’t bother me lol. They need a much better team to handle updates.

Lol yes, now I know I’m psychic 😂

              1. That’s a bit reassuring that it went back to normal 👍

                1. Yeah I’m glad the likes at least are back to normal. The rest is still weird.

  15. Beautiful poem, Pooja. I have never been followed , I think so.(not noticed) but I know defence mechanism ( judo)

Yes, i like October month very much because of long break (Diwali vacation) and feast of my church.
About horror, i create horror stories and tell students.

    1. Thank you. Glad you were never followed and know self-defence.

That’s great. I love October too. Ooh horror stories are always fun.

      1. You are always welcome dear ❤️

  16. I am a horror fan from way back! I’m waiting right now for the new Hellraiser to premiere on Hulu!

    1. Ooh yes I’m waiting for that too!

  17. I like this piece and love horror too. 🙂

Yes my reader is very different when I’m on my laptop, but it doesn’t look different on the mobile app. Looks like WP made some changes…

    1. Thanks so much.

Mine is different on both my laptop and phone. I just hope this doesn’t come with too many glitches. My Reader is already acting weird.

  18. Great Poem 🤣😎🙃

    1. Thanks so much 😊

  19. Now that’s creepy! Thank God I’ve never been followed, at least not that I know of.

    1. Yeah it was super creepy, so glad it’s never happened to you!

  20. No, it’s different for men. I’ve never felt that fear, except with a pack of dogs a long time ago – when dogs ran free. Another female blogger recently wrote about running alone in the morning before the sun comes up and spoke of the fear.
Before “we” discovered killing from a distance, we all felt that fear. Every now and again a mountain lion will snatch some lone person in the mountains., but it’s really rare. Again, no, I don’t feel like prey (where I live). However, that instinct (fear) still lurks deep in my psyche, I’m sure.
Love October/fall; but not a fan of the horror genre.

    1. Yeah I think women are usually the ones who are more cautious since crimes like that often effect them much more than men.

  21. I enjoyed your poem. I personally have never been followed. At least to my knowledge anyways. But I have been in creepy feeling areas that left me looking around constantly.

    1. Yeah there are definitely some places you have to be extra careful in.

  22. Stalked by anxiety, I wake from a dream on a Horror movie set, and the direction says I must leave because I don’t belong to the actor’s guild. When I get outside, Big Foot tells me that I’m still asleep. I say that that is good because I haven’t been sleeping enough. A vampire bites me on the neck. I wake up and the nurse says I’ve been shot and I’m bleeding out too much to save. “What?” I say, and she says not to worry because I’m only dreaming. When I wake up, the Angel of Death tells me it’s not my time but I will soon be visited by the Angel of Anxiety, three ghosts, Scrooge, Charles Dickens and “A Christmas Carol” presentation of every mistake I’ve ever made. The singing is off-key. Ah, that’s the rub: perchance to sleep on a cacophony on the horns of a dilemma. Something approaches, an invisible menace, more powerful than the darkest evil… a noise that will not speak its name, a stalking horse for worry.

    1. Ooh very scary.

  23. Freaking sketchy, actually I’ve been followed 2 times in my life it’s so creepy…. Take care Pooja.

    1. Wow, glad you’re okay. We really have to be extra careful out there.

  24. whew my heart was racing for awhile.. I hate scary stories.. hahhah😂

    1. Haha yeah I was terrified when it happened but luckily I’ve been followed before so I was sort of prepared 😬

  25. Be vigilant. It is said that those assailant tend to choose those who are not paying attention to their surroundings. This is why always be careful and know how to protect ourselves. It is a crazy world out there. If you are in New York City, you have to be extra careful after taking money out of an ATM since somebody might lurk around and try to follow you…

    1. Yes, I always have my guard up because I have watched so many murder shows lol. Kenya is relatively safe especially the area I stay in but you still have to be careful because you never know.

  26. Praise God u are save and he didn’t do anything to u. Being followed isn’t a good experience. Thanks for sharing

    1. I know, I’m so thankful I was able to escape. It could have been a very bad situation.

  27. That story was suspenseful and I enjoyed the twist / happy ending!

Awareness of surroundings is important. It’s also important, if you’re innocently trying to approach a woman by herself, to not terrify her first. That should be obvious but sometimes when you’re a man, it never crosses your mind because you don’t live with the fear yourself. Heavy breathing and chasing <<< "Hey, ma'am, I think you dropped something!"

    1. Thanks so much.

Yes, it’s really important to know what’s happening around you. Mainly if you’re a woman. I agree, men sometimes forget that women live differently. We always have to have our guard up.

      1. I wish that wasn’t so true!

  28. No horror stories, please.
I get easily panicked whenever I hear one. lol.😂😂
    I enjoyed your creation, Pooja.👌💫✨

    1. Haha sorry about that. Thank you 😊

  29. The worse to me is being followed in my car. Someone followed me home before and I’m glad that I noticed before I turned on to my street. 😳😩

    1. That’s literally so scary, so glad you realised you were being followed 😳

      1. I’m always on the look out! I have trust issues and it’s finally paying off 🤣🤣
I think I’ll blog about it so others can beware of creepers

        1. You totally should 😊

          1. Okay I will! 😍

    1. Thanks so much.

  30. My reader looks the same as always. Love the story with the twist in the end. I have been followed once. Some dude approached me while I was at university and told me that he had been watching me and following me. I’m often paranoid that I’m being watched and followed but I rarely get out of the house anyway so I wouldn’t know for sure.

    1. Thank you so much. Sorry to hear that you were followed. It’s scary when that happens.
