How Blogging Can Make Money

How Blogging Can Make Money

I know a lot of bloggers blog as a hobby. However, I also know a number of bloggers are interested in making an income via their blog. I know this to be true because I get a lot of comments, emails, DM’s etc asking me about it. Which is fine, I’m happy to help. But sometimes responding to all this takes a while and if I have posts about it already it’s much easier to send a link and point them in the right direction. That’s why I decided to write this post today. Here is how blogging can make money:

Ads

I think this is one that most people are already familiar with and know about. Because it’s the one most popular advice sites talk about. And they are absolutely right. Ads are a great source of revenue and the best part is that you really don’t have to do much.

But in the hopes of being truly honest with you, I’ll have to burst your bubble a little when it comes to Ads.

Ads are great if you already have a good amount of traffic and willing to spend time on your blog increasing your traffic constantly. Ads pay a commission which means you only see a small percentage of the profit. You only earn a good amount of income via ads if your traffic is significantly high. So keep that in mind.

Products And Services

Personally, I feel like this is the best way blogging can make money. Selling a product and/or service or multiple products and/or services is a great way to earn an income from blogging. Firstly, this is a much more stable way to make an income instead of Ads or other revenue sources because it doesn’t solely depend on traffic and following (depending on what you are offering of course).

The other great thing about this method is that you can pretty much pick anything you’re good at to sell. We all have things we’re good at. And with the internet being what it is, there’s demand for literally everything. It could be art, digital art, courses, tarot card readings, books and literally anything else. As long as you’re able to get to the right target market, you’ll make sales.

The downside of this method of revenue is that it is still not that stable. And even though it does not solely depend on your traffic and following, it still depends on them to an extent. So compared to a day job, this may not be the most stable form of income. Especially when what you are selling isn’t something longterm. Because some people will buy it at first but may not become recurring customers.

Sponsored Content

This is another great method of making an income from your blog. Sponsored content can mean many things. Someone may want you to review something on your blog, add links, share a guest post and much more. The best part about this method is that many sponsors do tend to become recurring clients. And sometimes you end up getting free stuff!

The bad part is that this method also relies on your traffic and following. Most people who sponsor bloggers tend to prefer to work with those that have at least a few thousand followers. And even at that point you’re considered a “micro” influencer which means you wouldn’t be paid as much as bigger bloggers.

Another con of this method is that you often have to actively seek out sponsors which can be time consuming and not everyone has enough time to do that.

Conclusion

So those are the ways in which blogging can make money. Hope they were helpful and informative.

Is your blog monetised? Do you hope to make money blogging in the future or present? Do you already make an income blogging? If so, what are the methods you use? Let me know in the comments section below because I would absolutely love to hear your answers to these questions. And if you don’t want to answer the questions, you can simply stop by and say hi!

  1. Hmm, I haven’t really thought about these things. LOL. I have always said to myself that I will do some research, but it all comes to delay delay and delay. Somehow I am not very motivated to do the necessary research even though I know I need to do that. I wonder why.

  2. Pooja, your posts make me think and they are an easy read. Thank you. As far as making money from blogging, my site has ads. But that is not why I made my website. I write each day because God told me to write. He will reveal the rest later. If I make loads of passive money or none at all, that is ok. I don’t do this for the money. I already have a day job. If we were to look at blogging vs working at McDonald’s for earning money, then McDonald’s would be the much better bet!

I will not stop being authentic merely to attract more Followers. At that point, Followers become Customers and pleasing them takes precedence over honesty.

    1. Thanks so much, I’m glad you feel that way. I understand and I think many people blog just for the sake of writing not as a way to make an income. Which is great for them.

  3. I only just started adding WP ads to my blog this year. I realized that most people use the Reader so the ads won’t bother them. I held off adding ads for so long because I was afraid it would annoy people.

    1. Yeah, most readers use the Reader so Ads aren’t an issue. And even in general I don’t think Ads are an issue unless they are excessive from what I have seen.

  4. I’m looking to monetize if I think it’s worth the effort.i’m still deciding. I’m leaning towards selling a product/service. I still have a job, but I would like to transition. Thanks for this information!

  5. Well… Yeah will work eventually in this direction 🫣

The main thing is, people need to understand is, blogging is not easy at all ❌

Yes as mentioned by you, need to give it a time. Cannot convince people immediately to read the work. It will take some time. Hard truth, need to get some tools that can help towards that direction.

For example google site kite is needed for AdSense ( if people won’t to show ad of their site), that means need to upgrade.

Overall blogging is not easy at all, it’s an activity that requires passion, patience and persistence. People think blogging can be passive income and easy money, but they forget to put efforts into this.

    1. Yes, blogging is much harder than people think. It needs time and energy. And it takes a certain amount of money to be successful.

      1. It is interesting to see your feelings about this. I have always found it easy, although I was helped along my by a friend who had already been using WordPress for a few years. Is there anything in particular that makes you feel it is “hard”? Perhaps she can help you. She seems to be quite the expert.

  6. still working my way around the site menus and have not even set up my blog correctly yet🤭
many are capable enough… like you say… requires time and dedication. a great share, Pooja 🤍✨

  7. I am not putting any effort into making money off my blog because I enjoy my day job and don’t want to switch careers yet. I blog for fun, and it’s basically one of my hobbies that doesn’t have to turn into a side hustle.

        1. You’re welcome. It’s the best way in my opinion because I believe Stripe also keeps commissions so PayPal would be better for you.

  8. Great info. I have Patreon, Buy-me-a-coffee, and Crowdfunding options so people have different options to contribute 🙂

            1. We also have an etsy shop for merchandise but it was just for fun more than anything. It’s a bit of a pain having money tied up in stock that I am then waiting to sell. It’s also a bit of a pain having boxes of stock kicking around the house, but I suppose it does create a small income 😀

              1. That’s good. I always recommend having multiple streams of revenue. I can definitely understand how having to store that stuff and paying for it can be a pain but worth it for the income 😀

  9. I had wordads on my blog for a while and then I discontinued as Pakistan doesn’t have PayPal and they only pay through that. Now I think I’m okay as I am for I don’t want to stress out

    1. Yes, WordPress has very limited payment options. If you’re happy with where you are with blogging, that’s all that matters.

  10. I don’t see any reason why I ought to receive any money for what is just a little hobby. It does not seem right. Although there are people in this world who are paid money for the most ridiculous things. I don’t know of the mechanics that allow someone to make money from their sites. It sounds rather dubious. Is that why some people post so many times a day? Because they are trying to increase traffic to make money?

    1. I think blogging is definitely great as a hobby for those that want to write as a hobby. A lot of people make money of Ads, selling products or services, tips etc. Those aren’t generally dubious but some can be. You’re right the ones that spam readers with posts are generally trying to increase traffic in the worst way possible.

  11. I’ve definitely had a few sales with ads, and my site is not that huge, but you’re right, I can have lots of clicks and still never make a sale and even then it kinda sucks to know I helped sell products and only got 10% from it. Products are something I’ve thought about venturing into before but it seems like everyone now is writing a book and I’m not someone who will force people to buy something they don’t want lol. Could I offer a mentoring service? Maybe but I have to think about my time too. Sponsored content, I’ve done that one, I still have the product because I haven’t managed to sell it lol. It started off as cool and now it’s a nightmare because it’s a huge loss of space in my 3×3 metre shed haha.

    1. Yeah, a small percentage of clicks become customers which can be annoying. You definitely have to think about what route to go as all of them have pros and cons. It took me months to get to a place where I’m satisfied with what I do lol.

  12. For me personally, I started a blog as a way to share my thoughts and didn’t have any intent of making money from it. I have transitioned from just having the blog to creating a website with the idea of providing hope and encouragement with people’s mental health. My goal is to sell some of my products (photographs, etc.) through the website to help with this endeavor. But I plan to keep the blog as part of the website, not as a way to collect revenue, but to continue providing inspiration for people, and updates on the (hopefully) success of what we are doing.

    1. That totally makes sense. I think it would be great to continue blogging as well because it really can encourage others with mental health problems. And selling some products is a great way to make some income.

  13. Everytime I read one of the article on how to make money blogging, I find some new information that really confuses me. Your writing is simple and therefore comprehensive. Besides, you have also revealed the pros and cons of each suggestion which rarely anyone does. Thanks for sharing a useful and helpful post, Pooja.

    1. Thanks, I try to write my advice posts as simply as possible because I know not everyone wants to read really complicated and technical posts. I like to mention the good and bad as readers deserve the truth. I’m really glad you found the post helpful.

  14. This is so interesting and good to know. I just tried to add Amazon links to one of my post to hopefully start making money from my blog, but I was unsuccessful.

    1. It sometimes takes a little while before you start seeing an income. Perhaps over time the Amazon links will generate some income.

  15. Hi there! I have just opened up my blog, in hope that it will develop into something, it’s a hobby but it would be nice to get something from it also. My blog is still quite new and recently I was knocked back from google Adsense, due to not enough content… I’ll try again next month! Thanks for the post!

  16. Hi, its my first time reading your blog, great advice! Im currently doing well in the products and services niche, but im looking to get into sponsored content as i have the traffic and ive seen plenty of people doing really well through this.

    1. Hey, thanks so much! Yeah, sponsored content is a wonderful way to make an income. It’s one of my main streams of income right now.
