The Power of Labels: A Guide to Efficient Home Office Organisation

The Power of Labels | How To Make Your Home Office More Comfortable

In the era of remote work, creating an efficient and organised home office space is essential for productivity and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. One often overlooked but powerful tool in the arsenal of home office organisation is the use of labels. As you may know, I’ve been working online for a couple of years now and have really benefitted from the power of labels.

The Psychology Behind The Power Of Labels

Labels go beyond mere categorisation; they tap into the psychology of organisation and productivity. The human brain is wired to respond positively to order and clarity. When items are clearly labeled, it reduces cognitive load, making it easier to locate and access what you need.

From physical folders to digital files on your laptop, labelling provides a systematic approach to decluttering, streamlining tasks, and boosting overall efficiency.

Step-by-Step Guide to Efficient Home Office Organisation with Labels:

1. Assessment and Decluttering

Begin the organization process by assessing your home office space. Take note of the items you use regularly and those that can be decluttered. Dispose of unnecessary items and create a clean slate for the organisation process. Then, divide your office supplies, documents, and equipment into logical categories. Common categories may include stationery, technology, important documents, and personal items. This step sets the foundation for creating labeled zones within your workspace.

2. Invest in Storage Solutions

To effectively use labels, invest in storage solutions that suit your needs. Consider bins, baskets, drawer organisers, and shelving units. Choose solutions that align with the aesthetic of your home office while providing functionality.

3. Colour-coding for Visual Clarity

One unique labelling method to organise your workspace is to assign specific colours to different categories or projects. This isn’t limited to physical objects but also applies to those on your computer, especially when you have several folders. If you use a MacBook, here’s how to change the color of your folders on Mac. It’s fairly easy but different from what you have on

Windows. Whatever the case, unique color codes make it easier to identify specific or more important folders quickly and add a layer of organisation that goes beyond mere labelling.

4. Incorporate Digital Labels

As mentioned, labelling doesn’t end with physical objects but extends to physical items. But apart from colour coding, you may also use words and tags to label your digital files and folders. However, ensure you maintain a clear and consistent naming convention for both physical and digital documents to make it easier to remember and locate files on your computer.

5. Zoning Your Workspace

Apply the concept of zoning to your home office. Designate specific areas for different activities or categories. For instance, create a technology zone for gadgets and cables, a stationery zone for pens and notebooks, and a filing zone for important documents. Clearly label each zone to reinforce the organisation structure.

6. Create a Mail and Document System

Managing paperwork is a common challenge in home offices. Implement a system for sorting and labelling incoming mail and documents. Designate a specific area for pending, urgent, and archived documents. Use labels to clearly mark each section, ensuring nothing gets lost or overlooked.

7. Maintain and Update Labels

Home office organization is an ongoing process. Regularly assess the effectiveness of your labelling system and make adjustments as needed. As your work evolves, so will your organisational needs. Stay proactive in maintaining a clutter-free and well-labeled workspace.

8. Personal Touch with Aesthetic Labels

Labels can also be an opportunity to add a personal touch to your home office. Choose aesthetically pleasing labels, or even consider creating custom labels that align with your personal style. Aside from enhancing the visual appeal of your workspace, this technique makes it a more inviting and inspiring environment. For more custom options, consider using Mixbook.

Benefits of an Organized Home Office

1. Increased Productivity:

A well-organised home office reduces the time spent searching for documents or files, leading to increased productivity. With labeled systems in place, you can focus more on tasks at hand rather than getting bogged down by disorganisation.

2. Reduced Stress and Overwhelm:

Clutter and disarray can contribute to stress and overwhelm. A labeled and organised home office provides a sense of order and control, creating a conducive environment for a calm and focused work experience.

3. Improved Time Management:

Knowing where to find what you need when you need it contributes to better time management. Labels act as signposts, guiding you through your tasks and minimising time wasted on searching for information.

4. Enhanced Professionalism:

A well-organized home office reflects professionalism. Whether you’re attending virtual meetings or sharing documents with clients, an organised workspace instills confidence and reinforces your commitment to excellence.

Wrapping Up The Power Of Labels

It’s more than obvious now: applying labelling principles to both physical and digital aspects of your workspace helps you create a harmonious environment that boosts productivity, reduces stress, and enhances overall efficiency in the remote work landscape. So, start labelling today and experience the transformative impact of an organised home office thanks to the power of labels.

  1. Incredibly important labels, it keeps you organized and takes the stress out of looking for everything. Great article.

    1. Thanks so much. I feel the same way too, it really helps reduce stress.

  2. Dude wow!

    This is written by you?
Can’t find any thing about guest blogging.
It’s wow. Loved reading it 😍

The things shared by you are actually effective. I mean like color coding, effective management, these little things indeed makes things convenient and hassle free. Saves time. If you know where you are supposed to look.
Then adding a map, or like an index, than even better.

Arranging and take care of things not only increases productivity, but also add life to those things.

You are indeed the lifes finest blogger, this article was completely different from your anything else 🤗😍

    1. Thanks so much 😊

The thing with working from home is that you need to be really organised. It’s harder than most office jobs because you’re your own boss. Being organised saves so much time, stress and energy.

      1. True true

But let’s talk about this post more
        See how exceptional it is!

        1. Thank you ☺️☺️

  3. Very good practical advice Pooja.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. You’re most welcome

  4. I LOVE ORGANIZATION…. I wish I could do much more of it, but my creative self can’t let it happen. It’s like an epic battle; I want to be uber creative, and then I tend to see things I want to declutter and organize, but that takes time and quite an investment of time, which I want to use to be creative. As you know, being creative can be messy.

“No MOM, I don’t want to clean my room today, GOSH!” lol.

    1. Sameee lol. I try to be as organised as possible but you definitely have to make time for it and as a creative person too I can be messy. Actually I used to be quite messy but last year I got really into organising.

  5. I have been wanting to do this for some time, but keep putting it off.

    1. Would really recommend it, organising everything saves so much time and energy. Plus, I feel like it makes me feel a lot better with my mental health too.

  6. Reading this reminds me how my old boss used to cringe whenever I had to share a screen and my desktop would pop up before I opened the program. I told him “you trying running three shifts and managing 200 people” 😄

    1. Lol, that’s fair 😅

      1. I did have folders for everything. This bitch of it all was finding the time to get items into them 🤣
Under normal conditions, though, you are spot on with this post. 👍👍

        1. Yeah, I understand. Sometimes it can be overwhelming 🫣

          Thanks ☺️

          1. When you’re the last man standing, yes. Other times it could and should be manageable.

            1. Unfortunately what I have noticed is that things can be manageable in a lot of cases with work but due to issues like not enough employees, other employees not doing their work well and more it ends up stressing everyone out.

              1. Oh, I know that play all too well. That’s the M.O. at my old job. Three other people have left since I did, and none of us have been replaced yet and from what I heard, most of the posts won’t be filled.

                1. Wow, that is really messed up but it’s good you left. You don’t want to be stuck in a toxic environment like that one.

                  1. Yes, at the end of the day they actually did me a favor. Getting pitch overbaord was like having an anchor removed from my neck. I still talk to a lot of friends there and sadly, most of them are not happy at all. Most are looking for an exit or barely holding on hoping it gets better.
For them, I hope it does, but there’s also the side of me which is happy they are reaping what they’ve sown.

                    1. That’s sad but yeah at the end of the day that’s how working for others is if I’m being honest. That’s why I wanted to freelance and never have to deal with all that drama. One of my best friends works a job like that and I honestly feel bad for her because it’s such a toxic environment.

                    2. Short term I’ll find a similar gig to what I had, but longer term, I’ll be looking to do some shit for myself so I don’t have to wear the corporate yoke forever. There are some good local companies, privately owned, and ideally, I can get into one of those since they are rarely as bad as a corp. Not perfect, but better from any friends I have talked to.

                    3. Good, I’m glad you’re thinking of longterm change. For now do what you can but it’s good to have a plan for the future.

                    4. Indeed. A plan that allows me freedom to do the things I love.
Short term, there will be boundaries though. Not breaking my neck for nothing again, that’s for sure.

                    5. Yeah, definitely. It’s really not worth it.

  7. Nice one, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  8. Great post Pooja! I notice how efficient you are and can access past blogs etc at a moments notice! It’s impressive!!!
    💕🙌

    1. Thanks so much! Organisations helps so much with that! 😊💕

  9. This is wonderful advice!! I started doing small labeling tasks and bought storage containers to contain organize and label toys and crafts’ supplies. It’s made a huge difference in the space aesthetics and freeing up my mind. I got some more drawers and cabinets to declutter and organize!!

    1. Thanks so much! It really does help so much and I think it makes you feel better mentally too.

      1. You’re welcome! I agree that it’s mentally cleansing too but getting there is the painful part. One thing I do is organize the mail as soon as I get it.

        1. Oh absolutely, it’s no easy task.

          1. I try to do a small space at a time. And when I’m done I feel relieved and unburdened.

            1. I do the same, I tackle one room or one area at a time and that way it’s not too overwhelming.

  10. Very helpful advice, Pooja. Simple storage solutions like baskets have made a world of difference in my life recently. Next to practice more of : labelling and colour coding.

    1. Thank you so much. I absolutely agree.

  11. I resisted labels for a long time, but had to give in. Now I wish I’d begun extensive labeling much earlier!

    1. I feel the same way, I didn’t start till early last year and I wish I had begun way before that!

    1. Thank you ☺️

  12. Thank you for the article, Pooja, that also follows an organized structure. Life flows better when our space (and minds) are organized and free of clutter. I’ve been going through my daughter’s childhood things – labelling what is staying (in bins) will be helpful. Keeping digital photos organized is another topic, entirely!

    1. Thank you so much. I very much agree. Once I started decluttering my space and organising everything, I felt so much better mentally too. And it’s saved me so much time and energy in the long run. Oh yeah, organising digital photos is so hard!

      1. You are very welcome. Thank you! I think it can save money too, when you know what you have and where it is, instead of buying more of what you can’t find. 😁 The photos! I keep them in digital folders which helps but it is time consuming keeping up with it all. Take care.

        1. You’re so welcome too. That’s true, I think it helps get rid of spending on unnecessary items that we already have. Oh yeah, even with digital photos it takes quite a while.

  13. Excellent advice, Pooja! Labels definitely help in keeping one organized.

    1. Thank you so much! They really do.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja!

  14. I picked up labelling from Elaine. She has two closets that are so well organized I feel embarrased to let her in my room. 😅 I’m working on it now, though.

    1. Haha glad she’s a good influence on you 😅 Good luck, you got this!

  15. I love organization! It helps not only with workflow, but with mental health too, as clutter and disorganization can be so overwhelming!

    1. I so agree, when I started decluttering and organising I started feeling so much less anxiety. A lot of my stress went away too.

  16. Oh how I love labels! Not on people, mind you! But rather and pretty much everything else! I am known as the label queen at work, because I love to organize and label, label, label! Contentment!

    1. Of course, hate labels on people but love them when it comes to my work space! Organising is amazing and saves so much time.

  17. That was fantastic! One’s “home office” is also one’s brain. The same techniques apply. A good therapist can help. 🙂

    1. Thank you! Thankfully, I have both a great label maker and great therapist 🙂

  18. Need to do this for my whole house tbh 🤣

    1. It’s so satisfying when you’re done 😫

  19. As a person who loves working in an organised environment, labeling is the way to go.
Your article has practical and detailed ways to do labeling. 👌

    1. Thank you so much. I was kind of a messy person but last year I decided to change that. Working full time meant I didn’t have time for all the extra stuff that comes with a disorganised office. And ever since I made changes to become more organised I feel much better and less stressed. Plus, I save so much time and energy.

  20. great advice , Pooja…( taking with to give it a try 😬😁)
    thanks for sharing 🤍

    1. Thanks so much 😊

      1. always a pleasure 🤍

  21. My success during working years as an administrator is because I love organization, advance planning and regular review of goal progress and working with a team.

    1. Those are definitely good skills to have as an administrator.

  22. My “filing system” is a bunch of like attracts like piles all over my house. I’m a little better digitally. But it’s still mostly files of files of piles. I don’t think I will ever be as organized as you are. 😉

    1. It’s not easy to organise and that’s okay, as long as you know where things are 😅

  23. Great post with lots of useful organizing tips. One can go too far with labels though… I remember a holiday rental where the owners labelled every single light switch 😉

    1. Thank you so much. Lol, okay that may have been too much labelling but to be fair it gets addictive 😅

      1. It does seem to! 😅

  24. I’m not very good at that – much too cluttered – too much going on at once!!

    1. I was like that too but it got too overwhelming so I had to get organised!

  25. I’ve got too many files within folders within bigger folders to keep all my digital files organized.

    1. That’s fair, it’s pretty hard to do when you have a large amount of files.

  26. Very interesting, but I prefer a clever clutter. 🤣😎🙃

    1. Lol, that’s totally up to you 😅

  27. I am a huge fan of organization especially at home so I love these practical tips on how to create systems that work. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much and same here, big fan of organisation too 🙂

  28. that was an interesting read Pooja! It was quite different from what you normally post, I enjoyed it! X

    1. Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it!
