My Thoughts And Beliefs About Health

woman holding grey steel spoon | My Thoughts And Beliefs About Health

A while back, Devang, one of the amazing health bloggers on this platform asked me to write a post about my thoughts and beliefs about health. It was ages ago, so my apologies for taking so long. But I’ve had so much other stuff going on. However, I finally got some time to write today and decided to write on this. Some of my opinions may be a little controversial to some but they’re my beliefs. Don’t like them? Not really my problem, lol.

Anyway, these are my thoughts and beliefs about health. I mean, I have a lot of thoughts and beliefs about health but these are the major one. This is actually what I have picked up over the last few years since I began having some health issues and started focusing much more on health and lifestyle.

Weight Does Not Matter

I think for the most part, weight doesn’t matter when it comes to health. And I think in most cases it shouldn’t even be part of the conversation. I know from my experience as well as the experiences of others that weight is always blamed by doctors. You can go in for something completely unrelated and they would still find a way to blame it on your weight especially if you are plus-sized. I went in for a dermatologist appointment and they weighed me first. Like, what’s the point of that?

I think instead of focusing on weight, we need to focus on health. We need to push people to eat healthy and have a healthy lifestyle. When you push people to lose or gain weight and focus so much on weight all it does it lead to mental health issues like eating disorders. When we focus on being healthy overall instead of a specific weight, we actually help people be the best version of themselves.

Mental And Physical Health Go Hand In Hand

Personally, I think mental and physical health definitely go hand in hand. If you are not in a mentally healthy place, it will affect your physical health as well and vice versa. In fact, numerous studies have shown that people with better mental health tend to avoid a lot of physical illnesses. And that stress is one of the major causes of numerous physical health problems.

As a society, I’ve noticed that we tend to focus so much more on physical health. It’s also significantly easier to find help when you have physical health issues. Not so much for mental health problems. It’s quite pricey and many regions of the world offer little to no resources for those suffering from mental health issues.

So, one of my thoughts and beliefs about health is that if you want to be healthy you need to take both your mental and physical health into account. Not just one or the other. Both your mind and your body need to be healthy for you to feel healthy overall.

Every Body Is Unique

I believe that every body is unique. Meaning, what is healthy for one person may not work for other people. That is why it’s really important to focus on yourself and find what works for you. And that’s also because everyone has a different type of body, different health issues etc. So, before you start on a journey to get healthy you need to figure out what your issues are specifically, what your body type is and what would work best for you.

I see a lot of influencers online trying to generalise and push things and it’s so frustrating. Not everyone is the same and you shouldn’t be pushing random diets, supplements etc towards people who may not even need it. For example, I keep seeing “health” influencers talk about high cortisol levels and how it causes fatigue, hair loss, anxiety etc. You know what else causes all those things? Tons of other health issues ranging from simple things like vitamin deficiency to more serious things like brain problems. You should absolutely not be generalising symptoms like that to just one thing.  You need to tell people to get tested and see what they are lacking in, what issues they have and then work from there.

Don’t just start taking or doing random things because someone on the internet told you to. Always check with your doctor to figure out what is causing your issues first.

Western Medicine Isn’t Always The Only Option

I don’t have any issues with western medication in general other than that they are very costly and some have concerning side effects. However, a lot of medical doctors tend to have an attitude where only western medicine is the solution. And that medications can cure everything. But that’s just not true. Yes, there are some things that you absolutely need mediation for. However, with a change in diet and lifestyle as well as the use of herbal medication, you can really see an improvement in certain health issues.

For example, I used to have a thyroid condition. My thyroid was under active and the doctor recommended I take medication for it. However, I decided to make some dietary and lifestyle changes to see if that helps before starting medication. And my thyroid function went back to normal on its own without any medication.

Again, I’m not anti-medication. I just think that in some cases medication isn’t the only option. I also strongly believe that prevention is better than cure.

Food And Lifestyle Are Most Important

I’ve said it before in this post but I’ll say it again. I think your diet and lifestyle are the most important when it comes to health. Sure, they won’t magically make all the bad things go away. But a healthy diet and lifestyle can prevent a lot of health issues down the road and help improve your health in the present as well.

You will notice that people who have a healthy diet, active lifestyle and proper sleep schedules tend to be healthier overall. Not always, but often. At the end of the day, good health is so important and focusing on having a healthy life will really benefit your health.

Conclusion

So, these are my thoughts and beliefs about health. What are your thoughts and beliefs about health? Do we share any common ones? Let me know in the comments below because I would absolutely love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. Physical and mental health go hand in hand – absolutely heartily agree. Great post Pooja, we share many common beliefs about health

    1. Thank you so much and yes very much so, when it comes to mental and physical health without one you can never be fully healthy.

  2. You have a very good handle on what’s important. I agree with most of your points. For me, health is mostly mental/attitude. Small food portions and moderate exercise help, but no drugs or medication necessary.

    1. Thanks so much. That’s fair because I think many have been cured by change in diet and lifestyle.

  3. My health is largely dependent on what kind of people I surround myself with. It’s so important to hang out with good folks and do what you believe in, otherwise you fall into all kinds of issues both mental and physical. It’s a bit simplified but essentially outlines my core beliefs about health

    1. That’s so true. The people you surround yourself with do end up with tend to rub off on you as well. They can either lift you up or pull you down.

      1. Healthy diet is also a big part of our health, it differs from one person to the other. I like food because I like food, some people have other understanding of this concept. They are a lot more scientific and rational than I am. And it’s probably a good thing that helps them be in a better shape

        1. Yeah, healthy diet and an active lifestyle is important. I think it’s okay to eat what you like as long as you make sure more than half of what you’re eating is relatively healthy. I try to eat as healthy as possible because of some health issues but for most people the 80/20 rule is good. Even a 70/30 is okay.

          1. That sounds about right Pooja

    Thanks for the Read !!!!

    take care

    1. Thanks so much.

  5. Nice post, Pooja. A friend of mine leans on the old maxim “all things in moderation”, and truly, it’s not too far off in some ways, nor is the good old 80/20 rule/ These things might sound a bit cliched, but there’s a reason they are; they work lol
BMI is a joke. By the BMI standards, I am considered obese, and while I am not an Olympic athlete, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who’d call me obese. Most of the doctors I have seen in recent years don’t seem to pay as much attention to it. Could I lose a bit around the middle? Sure, but it’s a far cry from obese.
Get plenty of sleep, reduce stress, eat decent 80% of the time, and exercise in some form at least 3 – 4 times a week and, generally, you won’t be terribly off. My .02

    1. Thanks so much. I so agree with you on all points. I think all things in moderation is the best way to live. Personally, I have a 90/10 rule due to health reasons but for most healthy people 80/20 is good enough.
True, the doctors always tells me to lose weight but I’m pretty fit and just happen to be curvy and short which honestly I’m fine with lol. I eat really healthy and have an active lifestyle. That’s good enough for me. BMI really doesn’t matter at all. My sister is a nutritionist and she tells me that as well. It’s all about the 80/20 rule.

      1. Eating really healthy and having an active lifestyle puts you far ahead of the majority of the pack. At least over here it does lol
At the risk of overstepping slightly, I will say that I don’t think short and curvy is a bad thing at all. 😃
And thankfully, I think a lot of doctors, etc., are abandoning the foolish BMI concept. It’s woefully outdated, much like the food pyramid, which mostly caters to whomever has the most powerful lobby lol

        1. Urgh, don’t even get me started on the food pyramid. They only show you one side even though it’s a pyramid- a professor told us that and it made so much sense. You only see the foods they want you to buy and everything else is ignored.

Haha thanks, could you mention that to my doctor? 😅 Jk, yeah I’m very happy with how I look and my lifestyle for now so I’m just sticking with it..

          1. Show me where your doctor is, I’ll set him straight lol
Yeah, exactly. The pyramid is pretty much a straight line 😄

            1. Lol, exactly. There are so many options left out of that pyramid 😅

              1. It’s all about the strongest lobby. Money talks lol

                1. If that ain’t the truth 😫

  6. Great post with good points. One I miss is that all you mention, prevention and healthy lifestyles are the privilege of those with money to finance it. Fresh fruits and vegetables are very expensive. I live on the East Coast. Th prices are through the roof.

I agree fresh food is often better than taking medications. But not everyone has the money for a healthy meal or the luxury to reduce their stress. If you have trouble to pay your bills, stress is part of your life.

I think that what should be included in health care, aside from mental health care, is the acknowledgement that food = care. The focus on weight alone is not right, I agree. I also agree that simply prescribing meds is unhealthy. But we need to insert access to good food in the discussion. If not, we skip a big part of what is wrong with our health care perceptions.

    1. Thanks so much. You’re absolutely right so I’m glad you added that. I think I tend to forget about the lack of availability of affordable healthy food options because it’s not something we deal with in Kenya. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is much more affordable here than eating out or eating microwavable/frozen foods. But I know that’s not the case in all countries. And stress is definitely a part of our life as much as we try to fight it. However, we can try to do what we can even if it’s not much. Even just meditating a few minutes a day makes a difference. It’s helped a lot with my anxiety disorder.

  7. I absolutely love the points you made! So valid!

    1. Thank you so much!

  8. Health and Fitness…..being active both physically and mentally…with my aging parents it hard to get that across..doesn;t matter what, just do something, with somebody..being social alays helps with the health above the neck

    1. Yup, being active mentally and physically helps a lot with health. I think with older generations, they’re very set in their ways so it’s hard to get them to do stuff sometimes. Socialising helps too, I feel better after hanging out with people I like.

  9. You are spot on all the points . Great post .

    1. Thanks so much.

  10. Great post, Pooja! ♥️🌹

    1. Thank you so much! ☺️❤️

      1. It’s my pleasure! 😊♥️

  11. I agree with all of your health related beliefs Pooja. It overall very important to have good , healthy habits.

    1. Thank you so much, absolutely and to have healthy habits from a young age makes a big difference when you get older. A lot of people start too late.

      1. Very true my friend. Healthy habits, are more effective if started early

        1. Yes, absolutely.

          1. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

  12. Nice post, thanks.

    1. Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it.

  13. I would concur with that though with some reservations. I do think there are parameters on most things – like weight.

    1. Yeah, I think with weight there are some extremes you want to avoid but I think people generally get to that point due to having unhealthy habits.

  14. This Devang guy must have done something good that’s why he got a shoutout twice this year 😛
    Well well thanks 🤗

I don’t know how to disagree with these points 😉
I can relate with them. Trainer at gym often try to promote a certain thing, according to them if you look a certain way, then only you are healthy.

I’ve been target for body shamming a lot. People show me pity, I don’t need pity. 😂. I’m so much capable at even age of 30 ( a girl called me old) 😆
Now even at 78 kg( from 105 kg) people can’t stop to give their unsolicited advice 😛

About the dermatologist, the possible explanation when they weigh you as they were incredulous that if such a preety girl is real. 👸🏻

Interesting how you remember about this topic, I totally forgot. The reason why I wanted it, is because we are always fascinated with how our favorites lives.

    1. Dude I’m getting tough competition these days with longer comments 😛

Longer comments is good. Not that I’m justifying. But, that shows involvement of readers.

      I have a complain tho 😶

      1. Lol, for real I’m getting lots of long comments these days but I love that. It means people are engaging with my posts. I’m getting good reading time per post as well thanks to that 😊

        1. Longer comments are great!

Far better than 10 likes( on multiple posts) in 5 secs.

How will you address my complaint?
Yes the girl in cover pic is pretty alright. But we don’t know how your new frame looks like? 🤓

And what about podcast? You working on them? 😊

          1. True, comments are the real indicator of your following and how successful your site is.

Lol, I’m staying out of the limelight for now 😅

    2. Hehe yes, Devang is a special person in the blogisphere 😅

Lol, 30 is not old at all 😅 I hate when people give unsolicited advice and I’ve noticed Indians do it a lot so I just ignore them haha. I know what to do and know what’s best for me.

Oh no, I was told to lose weight lol. But I don’t want to, I like how I look 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had saved the draft which is why I remembered, I didn’t want to forget because I liked the idea for the post.

      1. 30 is old to many 😅
        Indians have that habits!!
They are easy to pass judgement.

If you love how you look, that’s all matters. I mean, your body, you decide what’s best for it.
Even if you gain or lose weight, then what? People will still tell you do this and that.
Even now I’m been told to do this and that.
If I want to look a certain way, because I choose that and not because others told me 🤷🏻
Humans cannot be happy, they ignore their imperfections and give advice to others 😂.

Dude, I have a bad habit to suggest people of topics. I suggest your topics mostly, because you are flexible and unpredictable ( in a good way). Otherwise I’m following a lots of poets. A win for me I got shoutout, mission accomplished 🤭

        1. Lol true, Indians can be judgey but whatever. I’ve learnt to ignore them.

I absolutely love how I look right now. I’ve lost as much weight as I wanted to, eat healthy, am active and try to live a good lifestyle. That’s enough in my opinion.

It’s fine cos a lot of your suggestions are actually good 😅

          1. If you are satisfied, that’s all matters 😉

            🤭😛

  15. I concur. Every body is different. I, personally, think that everyone can benefit from Ningxia Red (you’ll never convince me otherwise!!! I’ve seen the results for many, many people!) Other than that the standard active lifestyle and helping others is a huge benefit!

    1. Thanks so much! That makes sense since many healing oils work as supplements for the body which can help a lot.

  16. wait does indeed matter Pooja
how can you become gupta again
    wo waiting? lmao

    1. I’ll just be here waiting lol.

      1. no doubt waiting for shape shifting form lifting to dry. no need to ask why either. interesting post. c o m f o r t as you assume the gupta!

        1. Thanks haha!

  17. Could not agree more about how mental health and physical health go hand in hand. I honestly don’t think you can treat one well without at considering the other.

    1. I think so too, physical and mental health are always related with one another.

  18. I totally agree that weight shouldn’t be a factor. It is a factor however, when you have bad knees. The more weight it affects your pain level. Loved this post!

    1. Oh true, in such cases it is a factor but in general I think it’s not that important. Thanks!

  19. Yes, we have a really bad way, culturally, of viewing mental health as a concern for aberrance rather than a normal (and big) part of our lives contributing to health and satisfaction. I think you’re absolutely right to lift up physical and mental healths, together. I’m sure in another day or with another group we might see them as one organic thing. You’re right about the product-pushing, too. Wouldn’t it be something if the promotions were conditional? Try this–it MIGHT be good for you. And there are so many things pressed upon us. Our cabinets would be filled to overflowing along with, by the way, the things we really need. I hope to learn more about the non-Western ideas and treatments that you try. Changes in diet or activity–how you treated your thyroid, for instance–sound so healthy as alternatives.

    1. True, so much stigma around mental illness. Imagine how far we would have come had we given mental health the same priority as physical health. Promotions should be conditional actually and people should be held responsible for pushing products that cause issues.
Maybe I can share a post about the Eastern methods I use to treat illnesses. I had really great results getting rid of my covid symptoms with herbal remedies.

  20. Wonderful post Pooja. We are incomplete agreement. I had to have a cardiac stress ECG when I went to work at an underground coal mine. I am short and of a solid build (therefore ‘overweight’) and they were very surprised at the results and how fit I was. I lasted eleven of the twelve minutes which, apparently, not many people manage to do, especially those with short stubby legs! I had 2 energetic dogs whom I walked for 45 minutes twice daily. But to look at me, you’d never know. Thanks for your interesting post. 💕

    1. Thank you so much. That’s the thing, you can’t really tell about a persons health simply by looking at them. As long as you are active and eat well, you’re probably good. 💕

  21. Great post, Pooja! You’re right… health is so individual and personal… one has to research and consult with reliable sources on what will work for them. “Health influencers” — what’s next LOL.

    1. Thank you! Absolutely, I think different things work for different people since we all have such different bodies. Health influencers are usually just random people sponsored to push stuff 🤐

  22. This is interesting to think about, Pooja. I agree with most of your thoughts.

    1. Thank you so much, so glad it was interesting.

  23. 🙏🙏🙏yes to all of this!!!

    1. Thank you! 💕

  24. I hear you Pooja and I especially agree that we should be paying more attention to our mental health and that generally it’s not smart taking health and dieting tips from “sketchy” people on social media, but I have to say sometimes weight does matter. Our weight can be an indicator of our health though not always and if we are not satisfied with how much we weigh it can greatly impact our mental health and the way we view ourselves making us preys to social media and other weight loss gimmicks. Still, I agree everything should be taken into consideration without automatically defaulting to weight. Good post!

    1. Yes, absolutely. Lots of very sketchy people on the internet trying to push less than legal pills and supplements. We should always be careful.

Absolutely, I get where you’re coming from. I think if weight is the result of a bad diet and lifestyle and is causing health issues, it needs to be taken into account. However, I’ve noticed a lot of people including doctors don’t take diet and lifestyle into account and are quick to blame issues on weight which is what I have a major issue with.

      Thank you!

      1. True, whenever I go to any doctor that is the first thing they do along with height. I guess it’s just a thing 😊

        1. Yup, I think so. It’s just part of the procedure.

  25. I certainly agree with your thoughts on mental and physical health being intertwined. I see it in myself and those closest to me all the time. I also agree that we all need to find what works for us. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how great the diet, supplements or exercise is, if it doesn’t fit in with your lifestyle and habits it’s not going to work. Great post, I like how you think!

    1. Yes, that’s exactly it. Every person is different and we all lead different lives. We need to find what works for us, not follow everything we see on the internet. Especially because a lot of those supplements and things people sell are so sketchy. Like that weight loss tea that’s viral that ended up just being a laxative.
      Thanks so much!

  26. Spot On, Pooja <3 !! I love how you can simplify complexities with intelligence and humor!

    1. Thank you so much! ☺️

  27. In my personal experience with weight over 20 years ago, it did affect my health a lot.

After I lost 110 pounds my health improved dramatically. A friend of mine pointed out that his grandma weighed 105 pounds, so I was carrying the equivalent of a small person around all the time, lol.

In past five years, I have gained back 70 pounds and health issues are creeping back in again, or could be old age, lol. I think it is time for me to get my poop in a group and get back to healthy eating again. My biggest challenge is boredom and stress eating, which you pointed out is the mental health issue.

I agree that BMI charts are pretty much useless. The new revised food guide seems much better that the old food pyramid.

    1. Oh I see, thanks for sharing your experiences. I think with weight, if your weight is a result of unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits then it’s definitely an issue. However, if you’re living a relatively healthy life and eat healthy I think it shouldn’t matter than much if you’re under or over the BMI.

Good luck with getting back to eating healthy, it’s not easy but it’s worth it.

      1. I agree, healthy food is the key. I was shocked back then to find out that a steady diet of potato chips, pizza, fries and other fried fast food was not good for you🙂 . These days, it is mostly potato chips, buffets and a sedentary day job that are my nemesis.

        1. Potato chips are so hard to resist, I can’t even have them in the house otherwise I’ll be eating them all day.

  28. Small steps to physical health can add up over time. I tried to diet a few years ago, but I just got hangry and totally cranky. In this season of my life, I need to keep up with my kids and raise a family. Gotta stay healthy.
You have a point in saying that mental health affects physical health. When I was at my lowest with my depression, I couldn’t eat. Everything tasted bad and I had no appetite. Two years ago, I made myself a meal and that was a milestone for me. I wanted to eat and I made myself a meal. lol. For someone with depression, that is a huge!

    1. Yes, absolutely. I think diets don’t really work longterm because most of them will keep you in a calorie deficit in a pretty unhealthy way. I think the 80/20 rule works better where you eat healthy 80% of the time and treat yourself 20% of the time.

I totally understand. When I have a depressive episode or am particularly anxious, my appetite just leaves. Wanting to eat is totally a big milestone and is the first signs that you’re doing better!

      1. 80/20 sounds healthy and doable! But why does ice cream and chocolate have to taste so delicious??!!
I was amazed at myself and couldn’t believe that for years I had not taken care to make a meal that I wanted to eat for myself…besides cooking for my family. Depression is a beast!

        1. Lol ikr, especially chocolate! I have such a hard time resisting that one.

Truly, depression just sucks all the joy out of your life and leaves you dumb. It’s just so awful. But really glad you’re better now.

          1. Thanks, Pooja! Right medication and dosage do wonders. I sometimes get that gut-wrenching sadness, but I’m better able to cope with it and to talk myself out of it.
            Hope yours has improved too!

            1. Yes, absolutely. When you find the right medication and dosage for you, you can really start to see changes.

              Thanks!

  29. Medicine isn’t always the option. In Uganda if you are feeling unwell and go to a government hospital, you will be given loads of medicine without proper examination.
And yet a small life adjustment could fix the issue.

    1. It’s the same in Kenya and a lot of times the medications cause more complications. That’s why alternatives should be looked into as well.

  30. Excellent article and 💯 in agreement.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you agree 😊

      1. You’re welcome, ofcourse. You take care now.

  31. I agree with you “I think instead of focusing on weight, we need to focus on health.” When health becomes a priority, weight loss will follow. — Tangie T. Woods

    1. That’s so true, once you become healthy your weight will stabilise itself too.

  32. Great Post, our mind accepts only the food we eat that is delicious, never allows us to eat bitter food with pleasure, that is the chemistry between mind and health.

    1. Yes, that’s very true. Thanks so much.

  33. welcome 👍👍👍

  34. I totally agree. I believe that western medicine shouldn’t be our only option. If we incorporate many other practices into our practices it could balance out our health. I’ve found that even some practices from around the world have helped me.

    1. I feel that way too. I think incorporating other practices when it comes to our health really helps. Western medication can be a good option but so can alternatives.

  35. I also believe that when the focus is put on weight, it can be stressful to a persons mental health. I also agree that eating healthier is the better way to go. However, I have a problem with sugary foods. I have tried time and time again to cut way down on sugary foods but I always start back up again for some reason. I’m not as bad as some people with it, but I admit, it’s an addiction. I think that part of my problem is that it’s easily accessible. Good post Pooja.

    1. I think so too. unfortunately, sugar is very addictive and that’s why it’s so hard to quit. Plus, they add it to everything even when not necessary and as you mentioned it’s easily accessible which makes it worse.
      Thanks so much.
