Natural Remedies That Have Worked For Me

Recently, I shared a post about my thoughts and beliefs about health and I got a lot of positive feedback on it. I talked about how I find some natural remedies really helpful and how I’ve even been able to cure some of my health problems naturally. One of my readersOne of my readers commented and asked me to share more about the non-Western remedies I’ve tried that have helped me. And I thought I would do just that because it may help others too. So here are some natural remedies that have worked for me. Oh and just to be clear, this is what helped me. It’s not a miracle cure and may not help everyone. These are just my personal experiences. I’m not trying to influence anyone or anything like that.

Thyroid

A few years ago, I got some blood work done and realised that my TSH (thyroid) levels are higher than they’re supped to be. In fact, 6.67 is pretty high and thyroid issues run in my family so it was a little scary. I talked to my doctor about this and he told me it would be best for me to start the medication to lower my TSH levels. However, I’m not a fan of taking medications especially those you have to take your whole life so I told him I would try to make some diet and lifestyle changes for a few months and see if that helps. If not, I would start medication in six months.

My mum helped me with a lot of research and we ended up finding some diets that help with high TSH levels. The first thing I did was cut out oil completely and I became much more active. I also started eating a lot more raw foods. So a lot of salads etc. And I got myself tested again and my thyroid was almost back to normal. So I stuck with it and as you can see from the graph, my thyroid is totally normal now.

I have started eating small amounts of oil again. So, I’ll eat oil maybe once or twice a week and eat healthier for the rest of the week. And not much fried food, maybe just once a month. I also try to do fruit fasts once a month or I’ll do a juice fast depending on how I’m feeling. That’s also helped so much.

Mental Health

For mental health, I’ve found CBD oil, meditation and Ashwagandha to be really helpful. Ashwagandha was recommended to me by Devang from FGW. It helps a lot with my sleep. I don’t normally have very good quality sleep but this has helped me a lot with it. I’m totally out these days. CBD oil helps with anxiety and depression. Of course, I still sometimes experience both. But I’ve just been better since using it. Meditation helps overall.

Oh and fruit fasts have helped with this too. I feel much more energetic after doing them.

Allergies

To be honest, I don’t know if the two are related or correlated at all. But after deciding to go plant based/vegan all my allergies just went away. And I was allergic to so many foods including mushrooms, avocado, mangoes, most berries and eggplants.

Deficiencies

I don’t really have a lot of deficiencies to be honest. Just D3, B12 and I have to take B6 not because of a deficiency but because I don’t produce enough dopamine because my brain hates me. When it comes to deficiencies, I think you should get yourself tested regularly and make sure to take your supplements on time. We don’t realise just how much these deficiencies can negatively impact our health. I know this isn’t a natural remedy (technically I guess you can take natural supplements or whatever) but it’s just an important reminder!

Colds, Flu And Covid

Now, the best thing to do is avoid Covid like the plague it is. But if that can’t be done, here is what helps me. Generally, when I get a cold, flu or Covid, I get a cough that refuses to go away. Like, no amount of western medicine helps me with it. But recently, my mum made a mix of ginger and turmeric that made my longterm cough go away in two days.

Squeeze out the juice of one inch of fresh turmeric and fresh ginger and drink one spoonful of it before bed. Add a couple of drops of water if needed. The taste isn’t great but it helps immensely. But you need to use fresh turmeric and fresh ginger. You can’t use the powder of either. It doesn’t work as well.

Conclusion

So, these are the natural remedies that have worked for me. Again, these have worked for me but aren’t some miracle cure. If you like, try them but I’m not going to guarantee anything. I hate when influencers do that. I’ll also add that natural remedies take a while to work so give it at least three to six months. Don’t expect results immediately.

And if you have any health issues or concerns you should talk to a doctor. I always consult with my sister before making changes to my diet and lifestyle because she’s a Nutritionist and Life Coach. I would also recommend talking to your GP or other more specialised doctors before making major changes.

Have you tried any of the remedies I’ve mentioned in this post? What are some of your favourite natural remedies? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. I’m hypothyroid, have been on a compounded T3/T4 for a long time. I still try other supplements including iodine, tyrosine, etc. I take D3, magnesium, turmeric/ginger, and a LOT of others, including the Bs cos of being vegan. I think the supplements I take help a lot, but I don’t know if I could ever stop the meds. I get tested every 6 months.

    1. I see, yeah I think most vegans lack Bs. I’m glad the supplements help even if you can’t stop the medication altogether. And it’s good you get tested regularly, I think that’s really important.

      1. I just ordered some berberine. Do you know anything about it?

        1. Yeah, I’ve been learning a lot about it recently and was considering buying some too. I think it’s great for people who have insulin resistant body, PCOS etc. However, keep in mind that it’s recommended not to take berberine for too long. So take a month off every three or six months.

          1. Thank you for your info! I debated about whether to get it or not, and will give it a try.

            1. Do keep me updated with the results because I’m thinking about trying it too.

  2. I always have a bag or two of candied ginger on hand because it helps my digestion a lot. Probably not as good as raw ginger but there’s no way I’m going to eat that 🙂

    1. Oh yeah, ginger is so great for digestion. I eat it raw though I like the taste 😅

      1. More power to you 😀

  3. Last year, my sister experienced a sudden increase in Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels during her pregnancy, a phenomenon not uncommon due to the physiological changes inherent to gestation. However, through diligent prevention measures and attentive medical care, any potential complications were successfully averted. The collaborative efforts between my sister and her healthcare providers ensured that her thyroid function remained stable throughout her pregnancy, mitigating the risk of adverse outcomes for both her and the developing fetus. This proactive approach exemplifies the importance of vigilant monitoring and timely intervention in managing thyroid disorders , ultimately safeguarding individual health.

    1. It’s very common for people to have fluctuations with TSH levels during pregnancy but so glad you guys found out early on and dealt with it well. That’s the most important thing.

  4. I’m a fan of natural remedies. I told my doctor I’m willing to take medication if what I try naturally doesn’t work. He’s okay with that. I have been able to stop using ibuprofen 99.9% of the time since using CBD. My immune system issues have also been helped tremendously by various immune supplements.

    1. That’s awesome. Yeah, CBD oil is seriously incredible for so many things. So glad it’s helping you!

  5. Ashwaganda and fresh tumeric + ginger sound really great! I want to have them a lot more in my diet. I find herbal teas in general very beneficial for my health, I also discovered that caffeine is not very good for me, so I have to keep it limited even when drinking tea.
This kind of articles are very helpful. I would love to learn more about natural medicine. Thanks for sharing it!

    1. All of those are wonderful for health. Teas are so good too, they all provide something beneficial to us. Thanks so much, so glad it was helpful and hope to share more soon.

      1. Looking forward to it

  6. Great advice, thanks so much! And congratulations on your success with your Thyroid. I have some minor Thyroid issues myself. Best wishes Phil

    1. Thanks so much! Sorry to hear you suffer from that too. Unfortunately thyroid issues are quite common.

  7. Great post, Pooja and those are impressive results re: your thyroid. Your mum sounds like she knows a lot about natural remedies. What a great resource to have in the family.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, she’s great with natural remedies and I’m very grateful for that.

  8. See that’s how you get a shoutout from Lifes finest blogger.

I’ve learned about a few more things. I’ll share them with you.

D3, B12 and B6 is due to you are vegan?
Animal products are more popular sources of these.

Do you think you can include fermented food in your diet as well?

    1. Of course, I had to give you a shoutout you gave me some great advice!

I think B12 is because I’m vegan. B6 is necessary for high prolactin levels not because I’m deficient in B6. And D3 is just because I never see the sun lol 😂

I love fermented stuff, I eat kimchi, pickles and drink kombucha 😊

      1. oh that’s great!!

I believe you are a vampire.
        You don’t age
you look same as 4-5 years ago.
You avoid sun, you avoid people.
        You avoid certain food.

        You like garlic or not?

        1. I can’t eat garlic because it makes me ill but I swear I’m not a vampire 🧛🏼‍♀️😅

          1. You sound vampire to me.

None of your habits are humanly. 🤷🏻‍♂️

            1. I’m painfully human and ordinary, I can assure you that 😅

              1. Nothing about you is ordinary

                1. Thanks, we can agree to disagree about that 😅

  9. Interesting about the oil, Pooja. You have told me several things I never knew so now I will be able to make some more changes to my diet. Thank you. 🤗💕

    1. I’m so glad to hear that, hope those changes help 🤗

      1. Thanks Pooja, I’m sure they will.🤗

        1. 🤗💕

  10. I’ve been on thyroxine for almost 28 years. I’ve had thyroid issues since teenage, but were diagnosed in my 30’s.

    1. So sorry to hear that, I think thyroid issues are extremely common. I got diagnosed in mid-twenties but thankfully diet and lifestyle changes fixed it.

      1. Well
Since mine is an autoimmune disease, my thyroid is practically nonexistent. So I have to take the medication

        1. Yeah, that makes sense. It’s best to take the medication then. My mum had to get part of her thyroid removed and takes the medication too.

          1. It’s as essential as any other hormone.

            1. Absolutely. All our hormones, vitamins etc need to be just right.

              1. Exactly so.

  11. That’s good , natural remedies are always better that medication

    1. Thanks and I definitely agree.

  12. The thyroid control is miraculous! It’s so hard to follow a strict diet but you have done so well!!

    1. Thanks, Doc! True, it’s not easy but it’s not too bad for me because I’m in this weird time of my life where I love salads 🥗😅

      1. But salads are soo yummm!!

        1. Right?? I’m so obsessed with salads right now 😫

  13. I seem to be allergic to alcohol. If I have more than ten pints my balance seems to go altogether!

    1. That’s so weird because I have the same problem!

  14. Getting bloodwork was a key for me to boost my health and like you, my TSH levels are why I cut out oil and they’re always right in the normal range now. So glad to hear your natural remedies are producing positive results.

    1. I’m so glad cutting out oil fixed your issue too. It really makes a huge difference with TSH levels. Thanks so much.

  15. Very informative, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  16. Thanks for this very detailed post. It’s great that you are doing your research and trying out the natural remedies first before using Pharmaceutical medication. Many more people these days are moving to the natural remedies as they get older including myself and find they are more helpful in treating the health issue they are dealing with and gaining the long term benefits. A majority of the time problems begin with the food we are eating and making a few dietary changes can have a lifechanging impact on our overall physical and mental health. Keep up your great work Pooja!!!

    1. Thank you so much! So true, I think a lot more people are moving towards natural remedies and understanding the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle which is great.

  17. Natural remedies always work the best. I love turmeric. My mom and I put it on almost every dish we eat.

    1. That’s great, turmeric is literally so beneficial.

      1. Absolutely! Spices are so good for you and make meals extra tasty.

  18. rather gather
    sugar and salt
    cold water
    coffee
    and meds
    eh?

      1. something borrwed, something blue used and new. you and your sissy what fun!

  19. Thanks for this post. You’re right that influencers seem to up with things that seem unique or different; if something is unfamiliar, it’s easier to sell, convincing people it’s a secret cure from far away. So I appreciate hearing directly from you about in particular, CBD Oil, which I haven’t tried yet.

    1. Yeah, I really don’t like when influencers try to push things as a miracle cure. Real life doesn’t work like that. CBD oil is definitely beneficial for many, I would recommend giving it a try.

  20. I prefer natural remedies, and find tumeric and ginger my go tos. I also like Apple Cider Vinegar for whatever ails me. Excellent post, Pooja!

    1. Same here, I find natural remedies really helpful. Turmeric and ginger are both so great for health. I haven’t tried Apple Cider Vinegar but have heard good things about it. Thanks!

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  21. Thank you for both the description of what you tried and the narrative of how it went (and also why you sought and tried things). I’m sorry, though, that your brain hates you; and I hope you two can work it out. Being a Sunday and also Easter, maybe you (and your brain) have had an epecially pleasant day. No monkeys or black cats banging at windows.

    1. Thank you so much. I have a love hate relationship with my brain so it’s not always bad. Have a very Happy Easter and thank you.

  22. This is good information, thanks for sharing

    1. Thank you so much.

  23. ginger and turmeric ( some honey as my girls complain about the taste 😬)
many natural remedies work really well I’ve found…a definite go to…
    wonderful share, Pooja 🤍

    1. Oh yeah, honey helps with the taste. Natural remedies are great and I like that there are no side effects. Thanks so much 😊

      1. most welcome 🤍

  24. I do swear by the ginger and tumeric. Helps with inflammation post distance runs. I did have a vitamin D deficiency a couple years ago, so I have been including it in my daily supplements. B12 and magnesium are standard. But I do believe in the Ginger and Tumeric tea. Every morning. Works wonders. 🙏

    1. Ginger and turmeric are amazing, so beneficial. I’ve been taking some supplements too which helps a lot. Thanks ☺️

      1. You’re welcome PoojaG

  25. update your website to shop

  26. I remember when your thyroid was and issue Pooja. This is soooo wonderful to hear that the shift in your diet made such a difference. Food is medicine for sure. I’ve always been a firm believer. I have a fresh juice daily which helps keep my immune system strong. Love your cough went away! I have to remember to use more turmeric in my diet. Thanks❣️

  27. Great post, Pooja, and I’m glad you’re thyroid is back to normal. Food and diet seem to always do the trick, but it’s easy to veer off and enjoy the foods that aren’t as healthy. I don’t have a thyroid issue, but I still try to eat low sugar, fats, carbs. etc and more fruits, veggies, and lean meats. Take care, and thanks for sharing! 💞

    1. Thank you so much and I’m really happy about that too. Yeah, I think it’s easy to give into temptations sometimes and generally I’m not too strict and let myself enjoy something not so healthy once in a while. But for the most part I try to eat well. Thanks! ☺️

  28. This is great news! Good for you girlie

    1. Thanks so much!

  29. Great article with health and delicious looking dishes. Thanks for posting.
    Stay safe.

    1. Thanks so much and happy to share it.

  30. Ginger and Turmeric for cold and flu is a new one. Am surely trying that soon because those two ailments seem to be too common, and medication can not always be the solution.

    1. Both are great for colds and flu, they work almost instantly.

  31. Okay, thank you.

    1. You’re welcome, hope it helps.

  32. Good post Pooj. I lately have been cooking with the powder of Turmeric and found that it helps the pain and inflammation I have especially in my feet. I have been thinking about trying a supplement of it but not sure yet.

    1. Thanks so much. Turmeric is really great for inflammation and glad it’s helping. The turmeric supplements aren’t great, I’d recommend raw turmeric instead. It’s so potent and helpful.

      1. Thank you for the info. I’ll stick to cooking with it them.

        1. No problem at all. Also the more you cook turmeric, the better it is for you so it’s supposed to be the first spice you add into your food.

  33. Good post thank you for the information

    1. Thanks so much.
