Shokupan Review And Experience

Shokupan Review And Experience

Shokupan is a beautiful café and restaurant located in Sarit Centre, Nairobi. My sister, cousin brother and I decided to visit. Actually, we had been planning to go for ages but things just weren’t working out. Finally, we were able to go and were so excited. The restaurant is fully vegetarian with lots of delicious vegan options. They offer pan Asian food options which is quite unique in Nairobi. We don’t have a lot of East Asian food options here. Of course, I wanted to share my Shokupan review and experience with you guys as well.

But first, shoutout to my cousin brother- we used his phone for all these images because I forgot mine at home lol.

The ambiance was lovely for a place in the centre of a mall. Seriously, it was so peaceful and calm. And the decoration was so lovely. They even had this little cherry blossom tree in the centre of the cafe.

I left the drinks up to my cousin brother because he always picks the best drinks. And this time was no different. He got the Mixed Berry Slushy and I got a Virgin Strawberry Margarita. It was literally so freaking good. One of the best drinks I’ve ever had. And it actually went perfectly with the meal too. He also really liked his drink as well.

Shokupan Review And Experience

For starters, we got the Vegan Hargau (dumplings) and hand cut French fries. They were both amazing, everyone really enjoyed them. For the main course, I got the Katsu Curry which was exquisite. I don’t throw that word around but in this case it was well deserved. My cousin brother got the Nashville Fried Tofu Sandwich which he also loved. It was a really big burger but he finished it because the food was so good we couldn’t stop eating. My sister got the pizza and enjoyed it too.

One thing I want to mention is that even with the vegan options, they were very generous with the tofu. I felt like I had gotten a good amount of protein in my meal. Most restaurants don’t know how to add vegan protein into meals but this one did. Every vegan option had lots of protein in it and I so appreciate that. Another thing is that tofu can either be great or awful depending on how you cook it. They did a fantastic job cooking it, I’ve had tofu at lots of places but this was easily my favourite. It was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked.

Conclusion

Overall, this was the best Asian food I’ve had in a while. Everything was so delicious and I think it was so worth it for the quantity. If you’re ever in Nairobi and craving East Asian food, this is the place to go. I NEVER finish all my food and always end up taking home leftover but this time I finished everything. That’s how amazing it was.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my Shokupan review and experience. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these review posts. Should I do more? Did you enjoy this one? What food should I try next? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. The food and drinks look amazing Pooja 🙂 We’re lucky here in London to have access to lots of great vegetarian/vegan eateries and my sons and I go to one place regularly, although it can be a bit pricey. So I’m quite happy to prepare and cook lots of different cuisines. Katsu is one of my favourites 🙂 You’re a great cook and foodie too, if I remember correctly Pooja?

    1. Thanks so much. That’s really great. We have a lot of vegetarian places here but not many vegan ones so I’m always excited to find a good one. Oh yes, I love to cook too 🙂

  2. Hey Pooja, you should try pirogi, they are vegetarian dumplings usually served with sour cream, can be both sweet and savory. I like pirogi with potato stuffing, many people adore cherry stuffed ones, really awesome options for the main course or dessert . Maybe you have tried them already, they never get old anyways.

    1. Ooh, I love perogies! I’ve never made them but I get Ms. or Mrs. T’s, I think is the brand. I like the potatoes and onion or they had a loaded potato recently that was good. I like to skillet fry them in butter.

      1. Yes, those are great Cari

    2. I’ll definitely try them. I’ve seen frozen ones in store but never actually had any. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

      1. I buy them frozen too, but it’s the best if we make them from scratch

        1. I’ll see if I can get a recipe otherwise I’ll try the frozen ones.

  3. I’m not Vegan but I would try the pizza and fries! A fun review, Pooja, and you look so beautiful! ❤️😊

    1. Thank you so much! ☺️❤️

  4. We had a place in the mall that was an entire restaurant outside of the “food court” (a bunch of fast-food type places or like a cafeteria). I don’t know if you’re familiar with either of those. It was American cuisine (I’m US), and my mom and I loved it. I’m not vegan or vegetarian, but I do love mushrooms, so that sandwich on your menu sounds yummy. I love strawberry daquiris and prefer the virgins 😊.

    1. Oh nice, we had those when I was living in Canada. Mushrooms are so good, I love them. And they’re so healthy too. This was my first time trying the strawberry daiquiri but it was so good I’ll definitely be getting one again 😊

  5. I always enjoy you restaurant/food reviews.i live vicariously through your adventures!

    1. Thank you so much, so glad to hear that!

  6. You know, the ambiance reminds me of this Italian restaurant at a mall a short drive away from where I live. While Shokupan has that faux cherry blossom tree, the restaurant near me had a faux lemon tree — complete with plastic lemon fruits for added realism!

    1. That’s so cool, it’s so nice when restaurants put effort into their decor. The restaurant near you sounds so good too!

  7. Seems like a good time

Been a while since place review.

    And look at you. 😍

    1. Thanks, it was an amazing afternoon with some great food. 😊

      1. In words of Chandler bing ” Can you be anymore amazing”

Whatever I think up till now is getting fulfilled.

I desired a review post, I get it
I desired to see my favorite blogger; I get it (minus the makeup)
I desired to see her new glasses; I get it.

        1. Well, I’m here to make my readers happy of course. I’m wearing makeup by the way 😅

          1. You still wearing makeup?
I thought that’s your early morning look 😛

            1. Lol, I wish 😅

              1. How is it then? 😛

                1. You’ll never know 😆

  8. Great review Pooja..nice photos by your brother and the food sounds amazing..!

    1. Thanks so much, the food was so good we’re definitely going to be going back!

  9. The food looks amazing Pooja! I’m glad you had a wonderful time.

    1. It was incredible and thanks so much 😊

  10. Mouthwatering…

    1. It was, I can’t wait to go back soon.

  11. Wow!!! Beautiful café! Who owns it? It looks Japanese style…🌸 Shokupan(食パン) means milk bread in Japanese. 🍞 I want to visit!

    1. It was so pretty! Yes, they specialise in Japanese food and I believe it’s owned by a Japanese person who migrated to Kenya. We have a nice little Japanese community here and a number of Japanese restaurants 😊

      1. If you are interested in fashion, take a look here. → https://twitter.com/nomadicartisan?s=20  The Japanese woman married to a Kenyan man and immigrated to Kenya. She owns a handmade-to-order clothing shop her husband. Recently, her business has become well known in Japan, so she accepts only by request.🙂

        1. Oh wow, that’s so cool. I’ll definitely check out her page 🙂

      2. Opps, missing word, She owns a handmade-to-order clothing shop With her husband. Sorry!

        1. Don’t worry I make typos all the time, I understood what you meant!

  12. You are quite a beautiful woman, great photos. I love Asian food too. I love the glasses. Glasses life is always fun, there is a whole style and vibe to it. I love my glasses, too. Do you go out more afternoons than evening when trying out new places?

    1. Thank you so much, Asian food is so good. I just got these glasses a while back and love them. Yeah glasses are definitely a vibe. I tend to go out more in the afternoon because that way I can spend the whole afternoon outside and also since there’s less of a rush in the afternoon. What about you?

  13. The food looks very tempting. A vegan restaurant is a rarity here.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, not a lot of vegan places here either but lots of vegan options now. I guess there are not many vegans in Pakistan so it makes sense to not have so many vegan restaurants. They probably make food depending on their customers preferences. Do you have vegetarian restaurants there?

      1. I don’t think there are. We can order vegetarian food but no dedicated restaurants here.

        1. Oh okay. Here we have quite a few good vegetarian places but not many vegan ones.

          1. Thanks cool. Speaks well of the entrepreneurship of the people there.

            1. Yeah, restaurant owners here are very smart when it comes to trends and are able to adjust their menu accordingly which I love.

              1. How wise.

                1. Yup, it’s the best way to stay in business. We always need to look at what people are looking for.

                  1. Very wise words

                    1. Thanks so much.

                    2. My pleasure

  14. Looks good, thanks.

    1. Thank you so much.

  15. That’s a lovely review for this restaurant. I have not been to Nairobi. I have not even been to Africa. However, I’ve been to India on a business trip and I loved the food. It was Bangalore and I ate at many good restaurants and I visited many breweries. My favorite food was at a restaurant called Punjab by Nature, and they also brewed their own beer. Anyway, you say Asian, but I assume it is Indian food.

I told one of the managers in Dallas (he was from Karnataka/Bangalore) that my favorite dish was Chicken Murgh. He told me, “Thomas I am pretty sure the name of the dish wasn’t Chicken Chicken”. So I misinterpreted the menu a bit.

    1. Thank you so much. You should definitely visit Africa if you ever get the chance, it’s a whole different experience here compared to other continents. India sounds lovely, I’ve never been but always wanted to go. Mostly for the food haha.

It’s sort of like when people say “chai tea” because that just translates to “tea tea” or “naan bread” which translates to “bread bread.”

  16. Sure looks good! Made my mouth water! You’re looking great too Pooj!

    1. Thank you, everything was incredibly delicious!

  17. a great review, Pooja…and you look lovely 🤍

    1. Thank you so much ☺️

      1. so welcome 🤍

  18. Looks delicious!! I’d go in a second if I were anywhere near!

    1. Thank you, I’m sure you would love it! Everything was so incredible.

  19. Nice pictures

    1. Thank you so much.

  20. Really good review. I’m a fan of most Asian delicacies. Growing up in Trinidad I was spooky got options. The mixed heritage and cultures lend itself to variety and cross-overs. Good post PoojaG. 👏👏

    1. Thanks so much. Oh yes, fusion food is a lot of fun to try and each country makes food differently.

  21. I usually prefer to make my own food but I really enjoyed this review! Seems like a nice, family friendly place!

    1. I think making your own food is best but I like to treat myself sometimes! Thanks so much, it was lovely!

  22. Your restaurant reviews are my second favorite posts you do, next to your general lifestyle blogs! The food looks great, especially the katsu. Asian food in other countries is so different from Asian food in the US (outside of a few unique restaurants). I feel like Americans have a specific idea of what Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc. food is and don’t want to try anything different. Even katsu is rare here… Japanese is just hibachi or sushi.

What’s a cousin brother? 😅 I haven’t heard that term before. Is that like a different version of first, second, third cousin?

Also, I always have to mention when Reader messes up your posts just so you’re aware and maybe the Engineers can help you fix the issue… the border around your pictures appears way off center so there’s a vertical line going through all the pics. I thought my screen cracked for a sec and actually rubbed my finger on my monitor. 😁Most people probably don’t notice/care, I just know I’d want you to tell me if the same was happening on my blog!

    Happy Monday!

    1. Yay, thank you! Even in Kenya, there are only certain dishes that are popular but this restaurant was much more authentic and had some great options.

Do you guys not say cousin brother/sister?? He’s my first cousin 😅

Urgh yes, I know the Reader does that sometimes but I’m getting no help on how to fix it. I’ll try reaching out again and see if they can do anything about it. Thanks so much for letting me know, I appreciate it 😊

Happy Monday, have a great one!

      1. There’s this new “feature” in the Jetpack app where when I tap to see your comment, it scrolls to the top of your comments and I have to scroll down forever to find mine, so I gave up on trying to reply until I had my laptop. Haha!

Nope we just say cousin! Some families are probably different but most people I know don’t even know their second or third cousins here. Kind of sad when you think about it, how our families just fragment immediately. I’ve met a couple second cousins as a kid but I don’t even know who they are at this point.

        1. That’s literally so annoying. This is why I refuse to use the Jetpack app lol!

That’s so weird because if you said cousin here people would think you’re weird 😅 I don’t know most of my second or third cousins but mostly because we cut out lots of toxic family members lol. I know a couple of second cousins but they all seriously suck. I mean even most of my first cousins aren’t very nice people so I try to stick with the two or three cousins I really like and that’s it.

  23. Looks amazing! I’m so happy to see vegan options in places I don’t expect.

    1. Thank you! I’m so happy to see vegan options all over my city now. It was very rare before.

  24. The food looks excellent and well-presented, Pooja. We live in a city where the downtown area has a wonderful variety of eclectic restaurants and bars. Many of them have vegan options on the menu.

    1. Thank you, the food was amazing. We really enjoyed ourselves. That’s so nice, it must be fun downtown.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. The downtown is very quaint and lined with huge trees. The restaurants have inside and outside seating, and some have music. During certain times of the year, the street is closed off for special events and festivals. We love to go there just to see the sights.

        1. That’s so nice, what a fun place. I love when restaurants have outside seating and always choose that on warm days.

  25. A strawberry margarita sounds really delicious right now. Also love your t shirt.#NikeStrong

    1. It was and thank you. One of my fav t-shirts!

      2. marc storace was hated for sounding too much like bon scott. corrie ten boom is an inspring dutch authoress from the holocast. good post poojerz!

  27. The place sounds wonderful, and your writing is wonderfully engaging. I’m glad you had such a good time with the food and drinks and I trust with each other. I am wistful, wishing I were surrounded by vegetarian-minded people and places.

    1. Thank you so much. It’s one of the best places I’ve been to so far. Thankfully, most of my family members are vegetarian so we tend to go to places that have more vegetarian and vegan friendly options. But I know most countries don’t have a lot of vegetarians so I understand what you mean.

  28. I love Asian food! Looks fab.

    1. Thank you, same here!

  29. Finishing everything is a sure sign of satisfaction! 😄 Looks delicious!

  33. Oh really nice cafe, plenty of delicious food, thanks Pooja for sharing it and it was a very good review. I need every dish with raw onion. what’s ur favorite dish.

    1. Thanks so much. It was really lovely. I don’t eat a lot of raw onions but I love tomatoes with everything. I think my favourite is anything with rice, I can’t live without it.

      1. Yes tomato items is so delicious. sliced fried tomato with butter nan is one among them.

        1. Oh yes, fried tomatoes are delicious.

    1. Thank you so much, they were really fun and hope to do another review next week! 😊

  36. The menu looks so cleanly designed and organized. That tree is beautiful. You look great. I know you aren’t going if there aren’t fries at this point and the drinks look really good. Tell your cousin brother he can be your assistant. LOL.

    1. Thank you so much. Haha yes, you know I need my fries 😅 I may just have to hire my cousin at this point…

  37. Lovely review Pooja, am vegetarian too and you got me into a new rabbit hole of finding out new dishes lol 😂,

I love reviews especially travels and food reviews. keep them coming.

    1. Thank you so much. Lol yes, you have to keep it interesting when you’re vegan or vegetarian. What’s your favourite vegetarian meal at the moment?

      Thanks ☺️

      1. For break fast give me chapati, lunch ugali + salad 🥗, dinner rice +coconut beans) omg my day becomes shawri(swahiri word)

        1. I love all of those except chapati, I don’t know why but I’ve never liked it. Love Ugali though 💕

          1. Chapati is good! U gotta be kidding. It’s one of the most popular breakfasts cheatcode in East Africa.

            1. I knowww but I just have never liked it, I don’t know why!

              1. I get you! Somethings don’t click and there’s nothing we can do about it.

  38. This looks delicious, Pooja! Loving the looks of the food and ambiance. <3

    1. Thanks so much, it was all so wonderful!

  39. Everything looks and sounds delightful!

    1. It was, we loved it!

  40. Have you had Indian food? It is good! This review was awesome! Do more of them! I enjoy hearing about all the restaurants you go to!

    1. Yes, I love Indian- so well seasoned and delicious! Thanks, hope to do more soon.
