Nevermore

Nevermore

A raven croaks in the distance

The rain pouring down

Thunder and lighting filling the ears

A mansion not too far away

Once filled with laughter and happiness

Now void of all feeling

The ravens that surround it

The only guests that visit anymore

Lenore

Her memory haunts its walls

And the resident inside

It was in the bleak December

When he lost his beloved

Her infectiously joyful smile

And her carefree nature

Nevermore

I’m sure some of you could already tell, but this poem was inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s, The Raven. It’s one of my favourite poems, if not my very favourite poem. I’ve always found it hauntingly beautiful and that is what I wanted to make the reader feel with this poem. I’m a simple woman, I see a raven, I write a poem inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. I left a few clues in there, for all the other Poe fans out there. Let me know if you noticed all or perhaps any of them. I’m happy with how this one turned out.

Have you read The Raven? Are you a fan of  Edgar Allen Poe? Did you enjoy my poem? Let me know in the comments below because I would absolutely love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. Poe has always been one of my faves, i used to own a 2nd edition of all his works that was passed down from my grandpa, printed in early 1900s as a complete edition of about 15 books. My first wife got it in the divorce and sold it to a pawn shop.. smh

    1. Wow, that’s so sad. I would be heartbroken to have lost such a valuable book.

      1. In the end though, it is just a thing. I bought a leather bound book that had them all in it later.

        1. Glad you could find the letter bound version.

          1. I bought a complete works of Shakespeare the same way about thebsame time as well.

            1. Nice, that’s really cool.

  4. A beautifully written poem Pooja. Definite tones of Poe in here. I’ve read a few of Poe’s works but a long time ago.

      1. My honor and pleasure. 😊

  6. I love the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, I am even weird enough to listen to is as Gregorian Chants at times, lol. But that’s my old Gothic self coming into play again!

    1. Lol, now I have to go listen to it as a Gregorian Chant too that sounds awesome!

  7. I enjoy it from the beginning to the end. Pooja. Stay safe.

    1. Thank you so much. Stay safe too.

  8. I immediately thought of The Raven! Love it Pooja 🙂

    1. Oh nice, thank you!

  9. Yes my thoughts went to the Raven when I read it. It is a great poem.

    1. Thanks so much.

  10. “hauntingly beautiful” … perfect, Pooja.
lol, thoughts immediately touched on the Raven too .. beautifully captured 💫🤍

    1. Thank you, I think most people thought of The Raven (yay) so it seems it’s a success haha 😊

      1. so welcome…🤍🌷

  11. I think you are a hopeless romantic Pooj.

    1. I think so too…

  12. Lovely, dark, and resonant. Thought of Poe when I began reading. Haven’t touched Poe in a long time. I’m loving your energy with these prompts, PoojaG. 😊❤️🙏

    1. Thank you so much. So glad to hear that. The prompts are so diverse so I get lots of room to be creative 😊

  13. Great poem! I haven’t read Edgar Allen Poe since college. Your poem makes me want to revisit his work. Thanks, Pooja!

    1. Thank you! I’ve been rereading some of his work recently and loving it. You should definitely revisit it!

      1. I will! Thanks for reminding me of his work.

        1. My pleasure!

  14. Edgar’s is too long and allusive. Yours is better. “The Simpson’s” cartoon had a version of “The raven” that added a few words by Homer Simpson that was explanatory. I’m not fond of pallid allusions.

    1. I vividly remember that because I was so thrilled that one of my favourite shows had one of my favourite poems on it. I believe it was one of the Halloween episodes.

  15. Hi, it’s many years since I read Poe’s poem but I did recognize a few bits. Darkly mysterious, just like Kevin’s image.

    1. Thank you so much, his image instantly reminded me of Poe and his obsession with ravens.

It’s always a delight to read you
    Always

    You are weather writer
One can rely on you for different genres.

I feel 2024 is best year for Pooja as a writer.

Pooja as a blogger is already the finest one.

    1. Thank you, that truly means a lot to me. I think I’ve improved as a writer and it feels good when others notice that too 😊

  20. You are a simple woman, if you are, in the best way. See a raven, think of Poe, write like Poe. I can relate. This poem of yours is a gothically fun (if fun’s allowed) walk through the Povian (made-up word for) tropes and themes–mansion (without falling yet like Usher’s), night, storm, the black birds, Lenore. The past when things were better, the remants of such things–among them feelings–persisting now. Your verse tintinnabulates.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I’m so glad this gave Povian vibes, that’s exactly what I was going for.

  21. You bring out the secret Goth in me. LOL 😂 I love this!

    1. Haha, we all have a secret goth in us and this one is for them 😅

  22. Loved reading your poem, Pooja! It is definitely hauntingly beautiful ❤️

    1. Thank you so much! ☺️

Nevermore poem is a great one and nice picture of the bird there, is it a crow?🐼😀💖

    1. Thank you so much. It’s a raven, similar to a crow. I think they’re in the same family 🐦‍⬛

      1. Okay😀🦃🦃

  27. This poem reminds me of the show The Fall of House Usher.
It’s a horror TV series based on Edgar Allan Poe’s work. You should definitely give it a watch.
And as usual, great work Pooja! ✨

    1. Oh I love that show, I just watched it recently. Thank you! ☺️

      1. You’re welcome 😊

  28. This poem is hauntingly beautiful, Pooja! ❤️

    1. Thank you so much! ❤️

  29. Poe would be thrilled if such emotion could be felt from such a somber soul, but his works haunt, titillate, and captivate me still ~ Perfect image from Kevin and to your poetry <3 forevermore … fly like the crow!
