The Woman In Me

The Woman In Me

A natural born performer

That’s what they called her

Her blonde hair and blue eyes

Stole hearts all over the world

But behind the scenes

She had no one to love

No one to rely on

Forced to live a lonely life

Cursed with talent

Always in the public eye

No privacy or true love

She withered and grew tired

Hid herself away

Controlled by those around her

She never performed again

This poem was inspired by Britney Spears’s book The Woman In Me. I recently read this book because a wonderful blogging friend mailed it to me along with another book. Anyway, I found her story so heartbreaking and it’s revolting how so many people in her life did her dirty.

She loved to sing and was in many ways a born performer. But her talent was both a gift and a curse. It’s just so sad how her life turned out and that the more famous she got the worse her life became. And it’s not just her, so many famous people end up deeply lonely and unhappy. It’s so heartbreaking. That’s what this poem is based on.

  1. This story is true about many of the stars

    1. Yes, unfortunately so.

      1. Many have even sued their parents/ guardians too

        1. So true, I don’t think it’s ethical for parents to use their kids for fame anyway.

          1. Very true my friend

  2. It’s on my TBR…so maybe in a year or two? Lol. I love your poem. It strikes to the heart of what many performers go through, especially those performing from a young age.

    1. Thank you, yes I think it’s particularly difficult for those that start very young.

  3. I’m not a beautiful woman but I can relate to living a lonely life, the cumulative effect of a lifetime of experiences…

    1. Yeah, in a way I feel we get lonelier as we get older.

  4. An excellent poem Pooja. I think actors and performers who choose that lifestyle choose loneliness and the artificial lifestyle that choice promotes that so it’s their choice. Their lifestyle is usually associated with multiple divorces and a feeling the world owes them a living and disappointment when they reach the end of their life and only have a huge house and money in the bank and diminishing following as they age.

    1. I don’t think it’s always a choice, for example Britney was a child star and was taken to auditions but her parents. But I do understand what you mean, a lot of them knowingly chase fame and then regret it.

      1. You are absolutely right in saying parents can be selfish enough to try and project their ambitions through their children and we have too much evidence of that today not only in the artistic world. However, it still comes down to personal choice. We don’t have to follow our parents’ ambitions for us. There are stories of child actors who chose not to follow that course in life and succeeded at what they really wanted to do with their life.

        1. Yes, that’s true.

  5. I think being really beautiful must be a big a hurdle to overcome – people are entranced by the book’s cover, not it’s contents. 💕📚

    1. Yes, I think when you’re that beautiful people don’t even care about what’s on the inside and that must really suck.

  6. Nice. Reminds me of “Candle in the Wind,” by Sir Elton John

    1. Oh I love that song, thanks.

  7. Fantastic poem Pooja and a great commentary on life in the spotlight. Excellent. 👏👏👏

    1. Thanks so much! 😊

  8. I have not read her book, but I want to and so I think I will buy it! X

    1. You should, I really enjoyed it!

  9. When I read the poem, I thought it was about Marilyn Monroe, another example.

    1. Yes, she’s another example of that. She had a terrible life because of her fame.

  10. This was sweet PooG

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. My pleasure 😝

( Your typical response to all the thank you on others post 😂)

        1. 😅😅

  11. wow! that’s a great choice Pooja! I like the part, ‘cursed with talent’ – how what should have been your praises and celebrations turned into your downfall…how your strength becomes your weakness..it’s very philosophical actually…

    1. Thank you! Yes, your strength can quickly become your biggest weakness.

  12. It was so sad watching the media feast on her as her personal life became a public disaster. I’m glad the conservatorship crap is finally over, and she can control her own destiny now. I hope life treats her kind this go round the poem was quite sad. At first I was thinking Munroe, but as you said, so many famous people end up so lonely.
    Great writing PoojaG

    1. Yeah, I’m glad the conservatorship is over too because her parents seem like awful people but she still doesn’t seem okay. I really hope there are people in her life who genuinely care about her and check up on her.
      Thanks so much 😊

      1. I don’t think she okay at all. I agree with you.. hopefully she has the right supper structures in place.

  13. I don’t know much about Britney Spears but it is often that way. What seems to be an advantage, like talent, can also be a curse. Talent can lead to success but also attract unwanted attention and demands. It was a great poem.

    1. Yes, I think it’s like that for many famous people. Talent can often be a gift and a curse. Thanks so much.

  14. I have not read the book.
Your poem captures the sadness perfectly.
I am curious about the book now.

    1. Thank you so much. The book is heartbreaking, it brought tears to my eyes from the beginning. She has had a very difficult life but I’m glad she finally gets to share her side of things.

  15. Haven’t read the book … But your poem sums it up so well. ” Cursed with talent”…a sad ring to this…still a beautiful and touching poem, Pooja 🤍💫

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, unfortunately talent can cause a lot of pain too. 😢

      1. sadly so as we see…my pleasure, Pooja 🤗🤍

  16. I have always thought that hers was a very sad story…

    1. Yes, it really was. From her childhood.

  17. Excellent poem, and the review tells how nice the book is. Thanks.

    1. Thanks so much, the book is really great.

  18. It’s such a heartbreaking fact that even though you achieve success and have everything one can ever wish for, you still feel lonely withoutthe presenceof your loved ones………that’s a beautiful poem, Pooja!! ✨️

    1. Yes, in some ways you become lonelier after achieving success. Thanks so much! 😊

  19. Success isolates. You do not know who to trust. That’s why Elvis surrounded himself with friends from before he was famous.

    1. Yes, that’s so true.

  20. empty yet full
    feel the pull?

    1. Exactly, empty but full.

      1. put on that wilbury cd. insides out. outsides in. dont it make you wanna jump and shout?

  21. Definitely, yes! Loneliness is at it’s rise as most things in life are superficial! No real human connection and the world is getting bitter with time. We better not live to other’s expectations

    1. Yes, I think people focusing on material things I a big part of the issue and why so many people feel so unhappy.

  22. Love the poem Pooja.
Oh I’d love to read your review of The Woman in Me. I’ve heard so many things about it.
I don’t usually read autobiographies and I’m still 50/50 with this one.

    1. Thanks so much. I loved the book, it was so raw and I cried so much while reading it.

  23. This is relatable to many …how many of us know the inside closed door story …an excellent poem from your end completes it..all the best 👍👍

    1. True, oftentimes we don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. Thanks so much 😊

  24. Sad ending! Isolated, controlled, not using her talents anymore. But it goes with the real story, so the ending fits. Your poem is an adept look at fame and consequences for the famous. Anyone might, however, go through what she went through. So keep things as healthy as you can!

    1. Yes, a very sad ending not just for her but many famous people. That’s true, even regular people can experience loneliness and isolation.

  25. I LOVE your poem and hope that it’s not prophetic …. I think you were able to tap into her psyche and lately, she’s spiraling again. Of course, anything held under a magnifying glass very long is going to feel overexposed. The media enjoys watching her unravel and I’m not sure she is aware enough to know better! You’ve got your finger on the pulse, Pooja <3 !!! Excellent read as always ~ 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, I’ve noticed that she’s been spiralling again. It’s so sad. The media does love it, it gives them something to talk about at her expense. I really hope someone who genuinely cares for her can help her 💕

  26. I can understand that with Brittany Spears, Pooja. She has a sad way about her. I think it is difficult to be famous and happy. Entertainment is an odd world.

    1. Yes, she had a sad childhood too and most of her life was in front of a camera being controlled by her abusive parents. Especially her alcoholic father. It’s so sad.

  27. The poem is very good at capturing the misogynistic treatment of many celebrity women like Britney Spears.

    1. Yes, I think the media love it when women spiral and get so much entertainment at their expense. It’s awful.

      1. It truly is despicable, the different ways women and men are portrayed by the media.

        1. It’s heartbreaking.

  28. Such a gr5eat poem about Brittany! I’ve always been such a huge fan of hers.

    1. Thank you and same here, I love her music!

  29. Such a beautiful and talented woman with such a tortured childhood that continued into her early adulthood. Your poem captures her mixed up life perfectly, Pooja.

    1. Yes, it’s so sad she had such a tough life. Thank you so much.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  30. I haven’t read the book, Pooja, but I’ve heard some of what she has gone through. And your poem expresses the fame and heartbreak perfectly. It is sad how many celebrities’ lives have taken a down turn.

    1. Yes, she’s been through a lot and so have many famous people. It’s really sad how they get what they want but end up unhappy.

  31. What a sad poem about a lonely soul out there

    1. Yes, unfortunately many famous people end up very lonely and isolated.

  32. I love your poem 💓!! Very good 💯

    1. Thank you so much! ☺️

  33. Elaine read that book too. It’s probably not my cup of tea because I’m not very interested in Britney Spears, but I know she loved it lol. I know a bit about the struggles Spears went through and respect her as a performer; I just only listen to music when it’s angry men shrieking about the devil. 😅 Jk. Mostly.

    1. Yeah, it’s a sad but amazing book. I’m not her biggest fan to be honest but I did find the book really interesting and I was literally ugly crying so many times because of it lol. Angry men shrieking about the devil is honestly so good, teenage me was obsessed 😅

      1. True, you don’t need to be a fan to sympathize with Britney!

  34. Great writing, Pooja! ♥️🌹I loved the poem.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you loved it 🥰

  35. What a poem, Pooja! Heartfelt and poignant.

    1. Thank you so much!

  36. Thoughtful poem, well done Pooja, being a free bird is a great thing and you noted the point that in life’s evening every body in loneliness.

    1. Thanks so much and yes there’s a lot of loneliness these days.

      1. You are welcome

Well done! The first thing I thought when I started to read it…it sounds like Britney Spears. I know a bit of the story. It’s been a struggle for her for sure!

    1. Yes, it’s not been easy for her at all.

  38. Very powerful contrast between the outer glamour and sparkle of celebrity and the inner husk of gnawing loneliness. <3 Beautifully expressed here.

    1. Thank you so much ☺️
