How To Retain Your WordPress Followers

I’m back with another blogging advice post today. I know I have not been posting a lot recently but that is because so many things have been going on in my life recently. I’m not quite ready to share all of that on here yet but will probably be sharing it next month. Plus, I need some time to focus on my writing too. I’m working on my first novel which is apparently really difficult. Why didn’t anyone tell me writing a novel is actually kind of difficult? Kidding. But back to this post. Today, I wanted to talk about how to retain your WordPress followers.

I like to share content related to what people ask me the most or what they ask me to share. And one thing I’ve only recently been hearing a lot is how to retain WordPress followers. Since the last couple of WordPress updates (don’t even get me started about the glitches), many people have noticed that their following count seems to decrease every once in a while.

Since, a blogging friend asked me about this the other day, I thought it might be a good idea to share a post since this would help others also having this problem. I share posts often on how to grow your following but this one will teach you how to retain those WordPress followers. Here is how to retain your WordPress followers:

Content

If you are not able to retain your WordPress followers, the first thing you need to think about is your content. I’ve noticed that many people on WordPress don’t have a specific niche. And that’s okay, I don’t either. But the truth is, all your followers may not be interested in following a multi-niche blog. Someone or some bloggers may have followed you after reading a specific post on a specific topic. But they may only be interested in similar posts. And if you don’t continue to post similar content, they may feel it’s best to unfollow your blog.

It’s pretty common knowledge that blogs with specific or niche content retain followers and readers better. So, if you really want to make sure you’re not losing followers due to content, I would recommend finding one niche or a handful of niches and sticking with those.

Another thing is that followers may not want to follow a blog that posts a lot of very controversial or opinionated content. That’s because they may not always agree with you. Stuff like politics can be a major turnoff for some readers. If you would like to retain followers, I would strongly recommend not sharing very controversial or opinionated content.

The problem with this though is that you may start feeling restricted with content. So, if you don’t care too much about losing a few followers, just keep sharing whatever content makes you happy. But remember, if you do hope to make an income from your blog (not everyone does and that’s okay), your content really matters so be mindful of what you share.

Attitude

Like with most things, your attitude really matters when it comes to blogging. And honestly, not even just blogging but with any content you decide to share online. But I think this one is particularly important for bloggers on WordPress because WordPress is such a tight-knit community. How we treat one another on this platform is something people take very seriously and thankfully so because some platforms are an absolute mess. *cough Instagram cough*

Most people do not want to follow a blog where the content creator is rude or standoffish. A lot of people here, including myself, enjoy the social aspects of blogging and would like to get to know other bloggers better. But if you respond rudely or coldly to comments that you receive or come off as having a bad attitude, people are more than likely to unfollow your blog.

Please be considerate and mindful of how you respond to other people on this platform. Personally, I’ve noticed that even though I share so much random content that not all followers will enjoy, many stick around and support my blog because we’ve become friends of the years and just really enjoy conversing with one another. So yes, attitude makes a huge difference.

Effort

Effort goes a long way when it comes to blogging. A little bit of effort makes your readers and followers feel like they are seen or heard. And that often makes them want to continue following your blog and support your content.

What do I mean by effort? Well, it’s really simple and a little obvious but I think we sometimes still need a reminder to do this. Make sure you respond to all your comments and do so politely, if someone takes the time to check out your blog try to do the same. These little things make people feel good and in the end you may just end up making some great virtual friends too.

Let It Go

Have you tried absolutely everything to stop losing followers but it’s happening anyway? Well, that’s because it’s totally normal to lose a couple of followers every now and then.

Firstly, WordPress has consistently been deleting spam or bot accounts on this platform. Which means that some of your followers probably got deleted and it has nothing to do with you or your content.

Next, WordPress does have certain glitches where people’s followers are automatically removed. I know this because I’ve been on both ends with it. I missed some posts on my Reader and realised some of the blogs I had been following for years were no longer on my list of blogs I follow. And I had to refollow them. Which was so weird. And I also got a couple of people telling me that they used to follow my biog and thought I stopped posting because they stopped getting updates from me. Only for it to turn out that they had been magically removed from my followers list. So again, that has nothing to do with you so don’t fret about it. What is yours will find you.

Lastly, some people will just not want to follow your content anymore and that’s totally okay. Maybe your writing style changed (it almost always does over the years) or maybe they changed and have different interests now. Or maybe they secretly hate you and no longer want to your blog. Kidding. My intrusive thoughts made me add that one. But either way, followers come and go. Don’t get your knickers in a bunch about it. Life goes on.

Final Thoughts

I hope this post helped you better understand how to retain your WordPress followers. And like I said, if nothing works just let a few of them go. It’s normal to lose a couple of followers now and then. Nothing to be too concerned about.

  1. Thanks for sharing this idea Anita and

    1. Thanks so much.

  2. Timely. Am changing my plan soon… and my business plans. WordPress is one of the platforms that actually supports where a story like mine is coming from in reality and there are many advantages for it being run the way it is by the management who runs it. A bit too specific in politicisation but my degree must be aired out occasionally.
Retention of following…? Had the same issues last time I had to take the blog down for an inquiry. Came through beautifully then… this time the progress has been significant and tangible, thanks be to many of you. Keep the community robust and caring. Always stand up for the vulnerable and their unique voice in each situation. And… stop to pat cats no matter how busy you think you are 😁

    1. Thanks. Yes, it’s true. WordPress is one of the few places that feels at home for everyone. Even if you’re different.

  3. Another interesting post.

    1. Thanks so much.

  4. Heck of an advice there.

    1. Thank you so much.

  5. a great post as always Pooja! I don’t usually lose followers, I have occasionally, but not a lot thankfully! X

    1. Thanks so much and that’s great that it doesn’t happen often!

  6. Thanks for this post Pooja. I see my followers have dropped but still I have a good percentage of comments (which is very important to me)
I see on the Reader it seems many blogs have very few comments, like people have gotten a bit tired of commenting and like on fb they can just click Like. That’s too bad, because as you say, this a community and discussion and commenting is what sets it apart from say fb or Instagram.

    1. Thanks so much. I get what you mean, personally comments mean the most since they show how many people read the post and responded.
True, I think more people are used to just liking now because of social media. It’s sad because yes comments are a big part of blogging.

  7. Very good reminders.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. You’re most welcome 🙏🏼

  8. This year, if I get 30 views in a WEEK, I start thinking that I posted something good.

    1. I think even a couple views is good, as long as someone is reading that’s awesome.

  9. Very useful tips.

    1. Thanks so much.

  10. As always, I find your post to be both informative and useful. I hope you had a good day today!

    1. Thanks so much, hope you had a good day too!

      1. You’re welcome.

And my day has been good for the most part, P.J. Thanks for the kind hopeful thought!

    1. Yes, consistency is key but life gets busy sometimes so I get it 😭 Thanks so much😊

  12. I’ve definitely noticed less engagement from WordPress, likely because the OG bloggers I knew when I started writing have given up on their blogs. But, I look forward to meeting new consistent bloggers and providing mutual support 💕

    1. True, I think many bloggers have changed platforms or abandoned their blog altogether. But there’s always new bloggers which is nice.

  13. Thank you for writing this post. Coming back to blogging feels different again, mostly because so much has been happening in my life. Each point you mentioned, I can relate. Thank you for the advice, and love your post. 😊

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, things have changed on this platform too.

  14. Thank you Pooja, your writing easy to understand and full of information. Good to know about your sharing.

    1. Thanks so much, so glad to hear that.

      1. You’re welcome Pooja.

  15. Thanks, Pooja! I found the bit about WP dropping blogs from your reading list helpful. I feel like this has happened to me, but didn’t know it was a “thing.” Appreciate that info!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, I think that happened to so many people recently. I had to refollow a bunch of blogs.

  17. Thats true, nice thoughts

    1. Thanks so much.

    1. Thanks so much 😊

  18. Good point about not taking things personally. Sometimes I feel bad about not following a blog back, but their content is far too niche for me, such as a topic that requires specific background or highly specific area of interest. I would have absolutely no clue what I’m reading about!

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, I think that’s fair since not every topic or niche is going to be of interest to us.

  19. If you need a beta-reader for your book please let me know 😃 got a lot of free time on my hands these days.

    1. I so appreciate that, thank you ☺️ Do you have an email I could reach out to you on when I’m done with the book?

      1. You’re welcome! You can reach out to originaldantepoetry@gmail.com when the manuscript is ready ✨

      2. You’re welcome! You can reach out to originaldantepoetry@gmail.com whenever the manuscript is ready ✨

        1. Perfect, I’ve saved your email address and will definitely reach out. Thanks again!

  20. Oh man, the first time WP unsubscribed me (from myself), I was unhappy. Then when it kept happening, I became livid. Then I stopped caring.

And to be honest, I think a lot of unfollowing happens because people have given up on WP, not necessarily our specific blogs. Can’t say that I blame them…

    1. Same, I tried to talk to some HE’s about it but they just gaslighted me into thinking it’s my fault. So I stopped caring and gave up.

True, I think so too. So many people have left especially over the last few years due to the changes and drop in traffic/following. And yeah, it’s understandable why they would do that.

  21. Awesome job on this, and yeah the random “unsubscribe” can be so highly annoying! Happens all the time!

    1. Thanks so much, true it’s an annoying glitch!

  22. Thank you for this, I just did a post yesterday similar but asked why. So thanks!

    1. Thanks so much!

  23. Excellent advice and reminders, Pooja! My blog is a niche blog, since it is mostly poetry and I love my circle of poets. My weekly prompts draw most of my followers and that pleases me, and with that said, I am still gaining followers.
I will not follow blogs where the content is mostly about politics because the topic is too volatile.
If there is not an About Me page, and there are no categories, I hesitiate to follow. Also, I feel a blog should have an attractive appearance and be easy to navigate.
Commenting and being kind makes a huge difference in retaining followers.

    1. Thanks so much! That’s wonderful, I’ve seen a lot of people responding to your prompts so I know it’s quite popular.
Same here, I very much prefer a blog I can easily navigate and follow.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. Frankly, I feel I wouldn’t have as many followers if I didn’t run the prompt.

  24. Hi, Pooja! I’m multi-niched, too, so I found this to be very interesting.

My problem is, I want to write about everything and still write SimLit. lol

I try to keep it organized into categories so things are easily found, but you never really know if that works because no one really tells you.

    Happy Thursday! xx

    1. Thanks so much! I think as long as your blog is organised people don’t mind it being multi-niche but that’s just how I feel. Happy Thursday!

  25. This part about political things is so true. So far, if I feel to mention something political, I do, but I don’t want it to be a big part of my writing. I’m commit to answering certain prompts honestly, so have come to terms with occasionally bothering someone enough for them to stop following me. That can happen about all kinds of things, as you say.

    1. I don’t mind if someone mentions politics once in a while but when it’s just politics I tend to unfollow because it’s not something I want to think about all the time. True, sometimes you lose followers once in a while and that’s fine. It happens no matter how careful you are about what you post.

      1. Yes that’s a good point. I feel similarly with religious posts. I like them and am drawn to people who write about their faith as ‘a’ part of life, but I’m more interested in the person as a multi-faceted human.

        1. Yeah, I feel that way too. I like reading about other peoples faith and beliefs but I would love to read about them as a person too.

          1. Well said. <3

  26. most informative and appreciate you sharing, Pooja…thank you 🤍

    1. Thanks so much 💕😊

      1. pleasure 🤍

  27. Great advice and tips, Pooja. My blog has grown since its birth 13 years ago, so I’m very happy. But I don’t care about numbers anymore. I care more about interacting with others, such as yourself. That’s what I enjoy and am grateful for. 🩷

    1. Thanks so much. That’s wonderful, focusing on content and not so much on numbers is probably the best way to enjoy blogging. Interacting is the best part, so glad we were able to connect here 💞

      1. I’m glad we’ve connected here, too, Pooja! 🥰❤️

  28. Wonderful Tips and advice. Thank you for sharing 🥰

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share 😊

  29. That was really helpful Pooja, blogging is like love relationship, you can’t force it, whoever wants to follow will stay, some will walk away. You can cry over the spilled milk but after all it’s water under the bridge. Happy blogging!

    1. Thanks so much. Absolutely, sometimes people will unfollow but you just have to let them go. Happy Blogging!

  30. Pooja, you are warm and caring in your posts and comments. Thank you for pointing out so many good considerations. You are appreciated, my friend.

    1. Thank you so much, that’s so sweet of you to say. You’re such a lovely person too and I’m very glad to have met you thanks to this platform.

  31. These are great tips.

Yeah maybe some people silently hate you.😅

    1. Thanks so much, haha maybe so 😅

  32. Excellent advice!

    1. Thank you!

  33. All good advice, Pooja! One thing I would add is to let one’s personality shine through in the writing. I am noticing more content online that is AI generated, in a style which over time becomes pretty bland and uninspiring to keep reading. I’d say stand apart from this by using humour, self-deprecation and quirkiness to show one’s individuality, and make our content more engaging.

    1. Thanks so much. That’s a great addition. Yes, I’ve noticed an increase in AI generated content too and it’s both uninspiring and bland.

    1. Thanks so much ☺

  34. GREAT POST 🧡💖💚

    Greetings ✍️🌹🌺🌺

    1. Thank you so much ☺

  35. Attitude is really really important! Readers can really read the tone behind every post and comment

    1. Absolutely, I think so too!

  36. I found this post to be educational and informative. Thanks for taking the time to share all of this with us. I have learned so much from you. I appreciate the information you share.

    1. Thanks so much. Happy to share the information.

  37. Some really great advice, thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share.

  38. Great advice!!!!

    1. Thank you!

      1. You’re welcome!

  39. Do you know how long it took to wait on my phone to fetch comments. That also drives me insane. Add this to the next complaint. lol. Thanks for all of this and I’ve been noticing this as well and no clue what’s going on but I’m
Noticing that as well and it’s wildly frustrating! 🥹

    1. That’s so annoying, sorry to hear that. Every change WP makes just makes the platform worse 😭

  40. Love this advice! Attitude honestly goes a long way.

    1. Thanks and yes very much so!

  41. This is so informative

    1. Thanks, glad to hear that.

  42. Informative post

    1. Thanks so much.

  43. I lost 2 k followers when face decided I was a bot (?) and banned me. And now WP is deleting them. What next?? 🤣😎🙃

    1. Yeah, these platforms are getting wild 😝

  44. Thank you Pooja, my followers are pretty stagnant, I don’t lose but I also don’t gain a lot. I have a lovely community and I’m happy about that. You included! 💕C

    1. Thanks so much! That’s great, it’s so nice to have a community here 💕

  45. Thank you for sharing. I completely agree with everything you said and it makes total sense.

I put a ton of effort into my blog every day and I do my best to be polite and encouraging and completely non-defensive about my work.

Although truly, the only people that have said not nice things about my writing, where people trying to hurt me or elicit a negative response from me.

I think it is glitches because like I’ve been consistent in my postings in my writing pretty much since I started a lot of poetry about feelings, life, love, hurt, pain, nature, relationships, music, art, water, etc.

Definitely gonna keep sticking to it do my best one day I hopefully we’ll get published. I’ve definitely written enough now to put together a book or two or three of poetry at least.

    1. Thanks so much. That’s great, yes you can definitely put the poems together in a book or books in the future.

  46. Good advice 🙏😊

    1. Thank you ☺️

  47. Thanks for the info about the WP glitch! There’s a blogger whose content is not really up my alley but his style is so humorous and engaging, I subscribe. I realized I hadn’t heard from him in weeks and checked… and somehow I had become unsubscribed. Thanks, WP! 😂 Fixed, but now I’m gonna check my subscriptions routinely.

Cool about the novel! Is this the one that you had written like 60K words about? Any teasers? 😎

    1. Oh no, sorry to hear that but yeah it’s happened to me multiple times too!

Thank you, yes that’s the one and no teasers yet. Still working on finalising my manuscript before sending it off to my editor 😊

  48. I absolutely LOVE your guides to blogging. Helped me tremendously!!!!!

    1. Thank you, so happy to hear that!

  49. Great advice as always thankyou for sharing your thoughts on retaining WP followers as for some bloggers numbers and stats are very important to them and seeing numbers decrease can become very stressful for them and most of the time it’s due to updates and algorithm changes which are the real cause and not the quality of their content.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, decreases in stats can be difficult for bloggers and they may blame themselves even though like you said it’s rarely the fault of the blogger.

  50. This has been very informative. We just joined the platform today hoping to share our work. We would really love to have subscribers and views to spread the work.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

    1. Thanks so much and good luck.

  51. Hi Pooja
