Things I Would Change About WordPress

How WordPress Works | I'm done with WordPress | Things I Would Change About WordPress | The Random WordPress Changes Are Far From Random | Six Word Story| How To Create An Algorithm Friendly Post | Features I Wish WordPress Had | Today, I want to ask you guys to share your thoughts about WordPress. How do you feel about WordPress as a blogging platform?

Things I Would Change About WordPress

WordPress is a continuously changing platform, especially more recently. I’ve had a lot to say about some of the changes being made. Although I am not always a fan of the changes, I tend to go along with them because I have no alternative options. I like this platform and the people here, so if I have to keep readjusting once in a few week I’ll do that. But instead of whining, today I thought I would share some things I would change about WordPress.

I hope that they take some time to read through these and take them into account. They probably won’t but I hope they do. I feel that these changes would actually help improve the platform instead of making changes that doesn’t really do much or change anything for the better. But that’s just my opinion and as I’m sure most of my readers know, I’m pretty full of myself so maybe I just think these changes will be great and no one else does… Lol anyway, here are the things I would change about WordPress (if I could).

Comments

For me, the best part of WordPress is the comments because that’s how we get to interact with one another. I’m not a particularly social person in real life, or even online. But on WordPress, I really enjoy the social part of it. I like to talk to others and get to know others bloggers. So yes, I spend a lot of times in the comments section and these are some changes I would make to the comments.

First, I think an edit button is very necessary at this point. We all make typos or grammar mistakes, or maybe we said something but later wish we could rephrase it. However, with no edit option we have no way of making changes to our comments. I think an edit button or option for our comments would be incredibly helpful.

Secondly, I’ve noticed that the comments don’t allow us to tag people. I would love it if they did, like on social media. So, if I read a post I think another blogger would like it would be really cool to be able to tag or “@” the blogger on that post.

Likes

This is something Cindy from Unique Times first mentioned to me and I thought this was such a good idea. Basically, I don’t know if you guys have noticed but if you get more than 90 likes on a post they don’t show the profiles of everyone that has liked the post. Instead, they show 90 and then it just says “more.” A lot of bloggers like to go into their “likes” and visit those that visited their post. Since this is a very mutual sort of platform I think it’s a great way to show our appreciation as well as find new sites. However, you end up missing a lot of them since WordPress doesn’t let us see all the “likes.” I wish they would, that would be really great.

Spam

It’s probably not just me who always finds actual comments in the spam folder and random spam comments on their notifications. If I was in charge of WordPress (and obviously I think I should be), I would make sure that the system is better at differentiating between real comments and spam. And banning those that leave spam like comments with the usual “follow my blog.”

Glitches

There are SO MANY glitches on WordPress these days. I recently talked on a recent post about a glitch with the followers/subscribers count as well as the one with the streaks. Other than those, there are so many other minor glitches. If I could change one thing about WordPress, it would be the glitches. I would revert WordPress back to the way it was with minimal issues and a very user friendly design.

Memory And Features

I find it crazy that so many features now need a paid plan for you to use them. When I started out on WordPress almost all those features were free. And even on the free plan we had a decent amount of memory. However, now you can’t even share videos without an upgrade. I find that so ridiculous. And I also feel like the greed is the reason so many bloggers are leaving this platform and the reason there’s so much less activity as compared to a few years ago.

It’s also the reason people are choosing social media over blogging. Why pay so much for memory when you can share as much as you like on social media for free? Not everyone is able to afford to pay for upgrades especially if they only blog as a hobby so I understand why they would choose to share on social media instead.

Customer Support

I would change a lot about the customer support we are currently offered. A lot of people upgraded their plans so they could live chat with happiness engineers. However, recently I’ve noticed that these chat options are often unavailable because “all the HE’s” are busy/preoccupied. The things is, back in the day everyone had the live chat option including the free plans. And the HE’s were never too busy.

My guess is that WP is trying to cheap out and is not hiring enough HE’s. So they’re always overwhelmed and that’s just not the right vibe for them to help us properly. They’re unsatisfied and the users are unsatisfied. The customer service is a mess at the moment if I’m being honest.

Personally, I would change the customer support to what it was like before. 24/7 live support for everyone including those on the free plan.

Final Thoughts

So, these are just some things I would change about WordPress. I don’t know if anyone from WordPress is reading this or even cares. Although the last time I whined about WP someone from GitHub shared my post and I think that’s a good thing. Not sure. Anyway, hope you enjoyed this post. It’s just something I was thinking of and thought I would share.

If you could, what would you change about WordPress? Let me know in the comments section below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. All great points, Pooja, this makes a lot of sense. I would remove the block editor right away. Also, the plans would be put back the way they were a few years ago so that everyone can afford a blog here.

    1. Thanks so much. Oh yes, I forgot about the block editor. Yes, the plans were much more affordable before and offered more features. Now you get barely anything.

      1. That’s a prime example of corporate greed, Pooja. Sickening!

        1. It is, the greed is out of control!

          1. Such BS. I hope your weekend is going well.

            1. It is, hope yours is too.

              1. 😊😊😊

  2. I would really appreciate the comment edit option 😅

Elsewhere I edit comments 100 times, because I’m a human and I can make mistakes.
Only good thing with the comments here is it gets send if you please the send button and not with enter key ☺️

Mention would be cool as well
I love that feature on LinkedIn. Even in post LinkedIn allow us to @ person.

I would also like sending pics in the comment. That would make commenting fun.

And chat options also, I mean why not
They can add feature like LinkedIn where person who are following each other’s blog can chat personally.
I know lifes finest blogger will get the most texts 😝

As for talking to customer support, I avoid doing that. Did once or twice in the past, was annoying.

    1. Haha yes, I like to edit comments when I make mistakes and it’s annoying we can’t do that here.

Oh yes, that would be nice to be able to chat with people 😊

  3. I love these suggestions! I would love to see them implemented, they’re practical and more in line with what we’re accustomed to elsewhere.

    1. Thank you! I hope they consider them at least.

  4. I agree with your comments! Including the one about being able to tag someone, especially when I read something that reminds me of another blogger. I would also like to edit comments. One time I pressed send and THEN realized I skipped a word. I would also like to ban those who use my comments section to advertise their blog or advertise their products.

    1. Thanks! Oh yeah, that’s happened to me too. I wish they would let us edit comments, that would help so much. And yes, blocking spammers would be a great option too.

  5. These are all good suggestions to improve the interaction with other bloggers in the community. And your right, they keep taking away many of the free options and repackaging them as paid options..I think AP already gets enough of my money for what they’re offering. I know I won’t be upgrading at all. Social media is designed with socializing in mind, and WP needs to take a page out of their play book.
Another great whine/not whine Pooja. Always advocating for the WP community. 👏👏

    1. Thanks so much. True, I think they make large profits so it’s annoying for them to keep trying to charge us more and more.

  6. Of all your suggestions on WP upgrades, adding an edit button to comments is my favourite! It’s annoying when you make a mistake in a comment- you can only delete it and start over, cringe that the mistake will remain on the interwebs forever or leave a new comment with your correction & a “*”. Very old fashioned if you ask me; edit buttons are NEEDED! 😭

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, an edit bottom would help so much 😭

  7. SMiLes Dear Pooja a Wonderful Job You’ve
    Done Here Suggesting Needed Improvements
in the Way WordPress Currently Works for Most Folks…

Although i’ve Had Issues with the Breathing Humans Giving
Customer Support Thank Goodness Not in the Last Year or so…

It’s Really Nice to Even Have that Option as Recourse As It’s So Hard

    To Find With Facebook
    Google Youtube and the Such

i Share Links On So Called ‘X’

Yet That’s All i’ll Do on there
    With Anything associated
with the Ilk of ‘Leon Musk’ hehe…

i Agree the Avenue of Interacting with
Folks Around the Globe on WordPress is the Best Feature

i’ve Gained A Whole Lot of Free Verse Inspiration in the Last 11 Years…

Plus Some Very Long Lasting Acquaintances Even FRiEnDS now and then With SMiLes..:)

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, I very much prefer real human help so them pushing AI on us is so annoying. Lol, don’t even get me started on X. Hate that app. The people here are wonderful, it’s nice that we’re able to make friends on this platform.

      1. Indeed it is…
        All my Pleasure☺️🙌

  8. 🙏🙌🏻

    Aum Shanti

  9. I ditto everything you said here, Pooja! Editing comments and tagging people is a great idea. There have been lot of times I would have liked to have done both. Yes, on the 90 likes and thanks for giving credit where credit is due.. lol. NOW Listen WP! Organize the likes as they come in so you know where you are in the line up and show everyone especially if you are on your mac. Thanks for “Unwinding” for us.. 💗

    1. Thank you! Lol I second that we need them to organise the likes in order! 💕

      1. You’re welcome and HELLO ? this doesn’t take rocket science. 😂 or does it? 🥺

        1. We think it’s simple but WP never listens to us 😅

  10. Very good points.

The edit function on comments is something that I agree with.

I think the algorithm to deal with spam might be more complicated than we give credit for, plus the spammers are always adapting, which ups the level of difficulty.

As for the customer service, to be fair, it seems that almost every business online has gone to a similar model, but that does not make it any less annoying. Some sites seem like they spent about 15 dollars and hired a preschooler to design their website. Even Government sites which you know were generously funded are terrible. If I find a business with real people that I can interact with then they have me as a customer until they switch to the automated model. Does that make me a needy customer? lol.

    1. Thanks so much.

That’s true, I think it’s hard to differentiate real spam from real comments but I think it can be possible like it is with most SM platforms.

That’s so true. IG doesn’t even have a proper customer care option. At least WP has one and I have to give them credit for that. Lol for real, I want to take to a real person who understands what I’m saying. I know most companies prefer AI but it’s just the worst.

  11. I agree with all your points. I find it especially annoying that you pay for a plan that includes support and then they are unavailable. In fact that is the only reason I pay anything.

    1. Thanks so much. Absolutely, so many pay for that specific service but now they’re pushing AI on us instead of real customer support.

  12. I’m with you on most of these – especially the real comments getting filed away as spam, hope you’re doing great, Linda xx

    1. Thanks so much. Oh yeah, those are so annoying. Ironically, I just found your comment in my spam folder. Hope you’re doing well too.

  13. I fully agree with your points Pooja. App these things need to to implemented in WP to make it better and efficient

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, I think these changes would help a lot.

      1. Very right 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  14. Good suggestion Pooja.

      1. You’re welcome Pooja.

  15. The whole HE’s not being there really pisses me off. Not because I use them, but because all the people who are supposed to use them can’t and so they go to the support forums and take away resources that are supposed to go to the free users. I am not blaming the users, because that is what they have to do. The blame is squarely on WP’s shoulders 🙁

    1. Yes, it’s so frustrating for everyone. Those on the free plans don’t get enough resources while those on paid plans don’t get the live chat they were promised. WP really needs to step up.

  16. These are all great! I too would love an edit button.

    1. Thanks so much, yeah an edit button would be amazing.

  17. free form gudka

      1. Pooja there! oof! let your inner gupta emerge and immerse you.

18. I’m with you on the sharing. I gave Substack a whirl earlier this summer for the video and audio sharing options (and quickly left—the vibes are RANCID over there).

As a workaround, I have an unlisted YouTube page for video and audio links to drop my posts. It’s fine, but I’d prefer to have everything live on my site.

    Ah well.

    1. Yeah, it’s weird to charge to let people share audio and videos. I mean, what’s the point even. Social media lets you do that for free, that’s why they’re so much more popular than platforms like this one.

  19. When it comes to renewing my WordPress site I’m through! Costs far too much and they’ve wrecked it.

    1. Yes, the costs are way too much these days!

  20. I agree with all your points, Pooja, especially editing comments. It seems as innovative as WordPress touts to be, simple things that we enjoy can be implemented.
Concerning the HE’s, I feel they more of them and perhaps, better training, as well. The times I’ve contacted them, some seem to be more knowlegeable than others and my issues are solved to my satisfaction. However, other HE’s blame the problems on everything but WordPress itself.
Keep whining because it is helpful to all of us! ❣️

    1. Absolutely, editing would be so helpful since typos happen often. That’s a very good point about the HE’s. I’ve had similar experiences. Some are fantastic and helpful while others sort of just gaslight you till you give up.
      Thank you! ☺️

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja!

  21. You’re so right, Pooja! Thanks for airing out WP problems, I too want the edit button in the comments, plus the media sharing, too.. wp is such a wonderful platform, it has less distractions like others… but it’s a shame they’re making us wanna hate it.

    1. Thank you! Yes, that would be so helpful but WP has really gotten greedy recently. Not everything needs to be a paid feature.

  22. Great post 💚♥️🧡 Have a happy and blessed Thursday 🌅 Best regards from Spain 🇪🇸

    1. Thanks and you too 😊

  23. Oh yessssss! They are too expensive, the helpful engineers are often times just as confused as I am, the glitches are a pain in the ass, and spam is getting on my nerves!!!!!!

    1. True, the prices for the plans are crazy compared to what features we get for them. Yeah, I think the HE’s need some serious training. The glitches are driving me crazy!

      1. so frustrating!

  24. Beautiful suggestions. Would love to see them implemented 😍

    1. Thanks so much, fingers crossed 😊

  25. Good suggestions! I agree!

  26. WP seems to be replacing HEs with AI. If I have a question, I want a real person not AI

    1. Yes, I’ve noticed that too and find it so frustrating. The AI just gives general answers while so many of the problems are glitches and very specific.

  27. These are all solid recommendations, Pooja.

My pet peeve is with the Jetpack app… when I click on a notification of you replying to my comment on your blog, WordPress will only drop me into the reply if there is a small number of comments. On a very popular blog like yours where there are many, many comments, I often have to spend several minutes scrolling through conversations to find your and my interaction. It’s so annoying!

Yes to an edit button for commenters! Substack has that.

I’ve found HEs to be inconsistent. Sometimes they’re so good I want to be friends with them, and other times, not so much.

    1. Thanks so much. That sounds really annoying, I hope they fix it. True, I’ve had some great HE’s and some awful ones. But it shouldn’t be that way. Perhaps they should do a better job to make sure they’re qualified and give them some training.

      1. Finally found your reply 😅
        You’re welcome!

  28. The first thing I would do is put you in charge of WordPress.

    1. I second that haha.

  29. Agreed that you should be in charge of WordPress. That’s my top rec. Every point you made is sensible and would be welcome. I’d LOVE to be able to edit, even if it was just an option for a window of time.

    1. Lol, I think so too. Thanks so much, oh absolutely even if it’s for like 24hours to edit a comment.

  30. I vote Pooja as CEO of Word Press! Your suggestions are spot on and make a lot of sense to me. Maybe tag WP in the tags and see if they can take a hint! Hugs, C

    1. Haha thanks! I really hope they see this, I did add a WordPress tag.

  31. You’re literally my source for information /updates about WordPress. It’s seriously helpful to me as a newbie, and I’m sure other people share the same sentiment. An edit button should definitely be available. WP is such a big platform for them not to have an edit button.

    1. Thanks so much. I’m so glad to hear that. Absolutely, an edit button is there on most other platforms so it’s odd we don’t have it here.

  32. They sound like valid changes Pooja. Guess I don’t see enough traffic on my blog for them to be a concern 😊.

    1. Thanks so much! 😊

  33. Every day I’m warned how much memory I’ve used and how much better my WP life would be if and when I upgrade. And when I’ve hit a hundred percent I guess I’ll have to. Now there is also a message in a banner at the top of the post that I could eliminate the banner (and also by implication enjoy my WP life more) by upgrading. And the upgrades must be purchased. I post using “Verse” since mine is a blog of poetry, but “Verse” does not allow for indented spacing (as in underneath a longer line). And when my responses at another blog are submitted (by me), there’s often no confirmation from WP, simply that the comment is “submitting.” There is the lack of sharing posts with sites such as Facebook and X unless it’s done manually, each site, that is, by me. Of course, I could be doing something wrong, but when practices I’ve employed over years now don’t work, I have to look at WP itself (themselves). All of which is to say that the problems and the limitations that you cite are accurate and astute and helpfully expressed for those of us who suffer these and more. When I was looking to blog, a while ago, WordPress was the entry that appeared with the invitation to blog for free and have a good time doing so, enjoying the blog work and the blogging community. Now it seems the only source of happiness with WP is to pay and even then to deal with problems regarding inefficient features and more. Sigh. And thanks, Pooja.

    1. Sorry to hear that. They’ve really been treating those on a free plan horribly recently. It was nothing like this when I was on the free plan. It was actually such a great experience. Yes, the biggest problem is that even after you pay the service is so much more horrible than you thought it would be.

    1. Thanks ☺️

  34. I love all the suggestions.
    Great post

    1. Thank you so much.

  35. I nominate Pooja for CEO/CHE (Chief Happiness Engineer) of WP!

Seriously though, good points, all. Esp the ones about editing comments, being able to click on “others” and the MIA HEs.

One other thing I’d love to see is to not allow other users to simply click “like” on 10-15 of your post posts in the hopes of getting reciprocal likes. Nothing more irritating than to hear chime after chime “User X likes [title]!” Not only have they insulted you by not bothering to read your content, they fill up your queue with junk, pushing out real comments at the other end.

Not sure how WP could do this… maybe some algorithm that looks at the length of your post, factors in an average reading time, reduces it by say half, and arrives at a rough read time. Only users who spend adequate time can like. I’m thinking if some opens a post, reads the first 2-3 paragraphs, says ehh and moves on, they’re not gonna like it anyway.

Anyway, good post, Pooja! Have a nice weekend! 😎

    1. Haha thanks! Oh yes, maybe they can have a minimum time before you can like a post. They usually know how much the read time for the post is so they can use that I guess to figure out how long people should be on the post on average. Thanks, have a nice rest of your weekend too! 😊

    2. Lovely suggestion

  36. I love all the suggestions, Pooja! 💗🌸

    1. Thanks so much 💕

      1. It’s my pleasure, Pooja! 💕

  37. Well, this blog post certainly is well written and has good points about WordPress now called the Jetpack Mobile App📱💯

Firstly, I salute your thoughts Pooja about the changes you wish to enact or implement here on this platform. As for me, the first change I can make is to make the Comments section more fun to use, for example: “We as Bloggers need to edit the miswritten comments and mention other Bloggers using the @ button

Secondly, the glitches are a nightmare, so there is nothing I can do about that. Just let God handle it.

Lastly, Bloggers leaving this platform have every right because blogging is not as fun and wow as it was back in the years of 2020 or less(2018- 20 something)

  38. I agree with all the points you’ve presented. The customer support section (specifically billing) is something I had trouble with a few weeks ago. It pertained to a Blaze campaign. Even though the issue was “resolved,” I still felt unsatisfied with the help provided. Anyway, thank you for sharing this insight. You know what? I’ll tweet this blog entry to the WordPress Twitter/X account. There’s no guarantee that they’ll respond, but they’ve responded to my tweets in the past. Peace.

  39. I too would like to edit my comments. I have had more than a few times where I was interrupted while commenting only to find that somehow I inadvertently entered prematurely. Or I cut and pasted a quote or excerpt and it did not paste correctly. But once entered, I was stuck with a sub par comment with no recourse. I second Pooja’s suggestion, oh WordPress Sysgod!!

    1. Yup, that’s happened to me too. Being able to edit comments even if it’s just for a little while after commenting would help so much!

  40. I would so LOVE an edit button and a tag feature! ❤️

    1. For real, I feel like that would make this platform so much better! ❤️

  41. Alight now girlie!!! Work those bunns out. Good job!

  42. It’s about to get much worse. I just found out about the WP drama going on and WP engine being blocked from WordPress itself. The terminology still confuses me but my understanding is that WP users won’t be able to change and update themes or install plugins. I can’t install plugins anyways so it doesn’t really affect me but it’s affecting most users. I’m not sure what’s to come with this on top of the issues you’ve already mentioned in your blog post.

    1. I read about that too and am expecting multiple issues to come out of it. I don’t understand why WP Engine was even mentioned in the speech, it was so unnecessary.

  43. Very informative post Pooja!

    1. Thanks so much!

  44. Thanks for this, enjoyed reading it.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post.
