Simple Daily Practices To Boost Your Mental Well-Being

Today, I wanted to talk about some simple daily practices to boost your mental well-being and improve your overall mental health.

When it comes to mental health, those little things really make the biggest difference. As someone who has dealt with depression and an anxiety disorder for more than a decade now, I am not kidding when I say that simple daily practices can really improve your mental health much more than the bigger, more obvious practices.

But keep in mind that these practices need to be done daily over. along period of time for you to see any noticeable changes in your mental health. With natural things like these, it takes longer to affect or improve your mental health. It doesn’t happen instantly but at the same time I feel that the results once they hit you last much longer.

Also, this sent me trying to tell anyone to stop what they’re doing and do these practices. If you’re taking medications or have other practices that help your mental health, that’s great. Keep doing what helps you most.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that some practices really make a big difference for me. And that’s why I wanted to share these simple daily practices that will boost your mental well-being:

Meditation

Meditation is the one thing I can’t skip. No matter how tired I am or how lazy I feel, I try to meditate for at least fifteen minutes every morning and every night before bed. If you’re like me and have an overactive mind or tend to have more negative thoughts, meditation can very literally be a lifesaver.

Meditation helps us better control our mind and our emotions. Which is much harder to do than you think. But, if you stick with it, meditation can really help you improve your mental health. You will feel much more relaxed even during stressful times or situations, you will have a better control over your mind and tongue and most importantly you will learn to focus on the present which can do wonders for your mental well-being.

Physical Exercise/Activity

Your mental and physical health are very much connected to one another. You can’t have one without the other. Studies have shown that being active for at least a few minutes every day really promotes mental well-being. You don’t need to do really difficult exercises or even go to the gym. Do what works for you. Try things like yoga, zoomba, pilates, running, jogging or even just taking walks. Just make sure you get some exercise every day.

Affirmations

I was never a bug believer in affirmations but recently I have really seen positive results from them. My mum recommended some affirmations for me when I was going through a rough time recently and they have really helped since I started doing them daily.

The same affirmations may not work for everyone. Your goals may be different so find those that align with you and try them out if you feel so inclined. I believe there are lots of apps and online resources that can help you learn more about affirmations and how to add them to your daily routine.

Gratitude And Self-Compassion

I wanted to add gratitude and self-compassion as the last practice with these simple daily practices to boost your mental well-being. I have always been more of a pessimist. Optimistic is probably not a word anyone would use to describe me. But recently I have really been trying to change that and have a more grateful attitude because I really am blessed in so many ways.

I got a gratitude app and have been writing down things I am grateful for daily. They have prompts like on WordPress and you answer the daily prompt with different things that help remind you just how much good you have in life. The app also has affirmations which makes it easier for me with that too. Anyway, I have been really understanding the importance of gratitude.

Self-compassion is another one I have been actively working on. I can be particularly harsh to myself and that’s not a good thing. My therapist and I were discussing this and she has been helping me speak to myself in a more compassionate way.

Gratitude and self-compassion as daily practices really help change your thought process, thinking patterns and negative mindsets. And that can make a big difference to your mental health.

Final Thoughts

So, those were some simple daily practices to boost your mental well-being. I hope this post was informative. You guys have no idea how much trouble I went through to finish and publish this post. I accidentally got A BUNCH of body wash in my eye and it hurt so bad. I had to rinse it with water for more than half an hour which left my typing hand really sore. It’s been a crazy day. But just happy to get this post out there.

What are some simply daily practices you integrate into your routine to help boost your mental well-being? Do you also practice any of the ones I mentioned above? What works best for your mental health and mental well-being? Let me know in the comments below because I would absolutely love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. Good topic. Thanks for the reminder.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. I’m dragging the chain a bit on languages. I had a 1330 day streak but got hospitalised because 9 cops poohed their strides when I asked for help because my blisters on my feet were so bad

        1. I’m so sorry to hear that, I hope you’re doing better now.

          1. Clearly I have access to my blog… and phone etc… and was discharged. I agree. I hope I am doing better now 😅

  2. Solid advice, Pooja, we can be our own worst enemy and critic unless we learn to forgive ourselves. By the way, I have your book on my coffee table, I’ll start reading it tomorrow. 😊❤️

    1. Thanks so much. That’s so true, we can be so harsh on ourselves sometimes.
Ah, that’s so exciting! I hope you enjoy it ❤️

      1. 🤙🏻😊😊

  3. Thanks for the list. I am glad this helped with your anxiety and depression and our sharing this with everyone.

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it. Hopefully, it’ll help others too.

  4. lots of great advice..me it’s journaling, both before bed and as soon as I wake…walking and running…so far it all works

    1. Oh yes, journaling is great for mental health too. And so is physical activity like walking/running.

  5. Great post, I hope your eyes are better now.

My simple daily practice is practicing gratitude and reading/watching uplifting content.

    1. Yes, I’m almost completely okay now. That’s great. Gratitude is important and so is surrounding yourself with more positive content.

      1. I am glad to hear that about your eyes.

        1. Thanks so much.

  6. Lovely tips

Sometimes just some positive thoughts do wonders for the mental health.

    I say

Life if beautiful if we practice positive affirmations.

Btw, how can I forget how beautifully you write 🤗

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, positive thinking makes all the difference. Aw, thanks 🤗

  7. Yes to all of these things, Pooja. These practices and medical intervention are not mutually exclusive. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Your suggestions can complement treatments already in place.

    1. Absolutely, you can definitely do these while being on medications or doing other treatments for your mental health.

  8. Good company, nature fix and uplifting music are my go to practices.
all the ones you mentioned in the post are very helpful in my experience.
    Stay well Pooja

    1. Nature makes everything better. Thanks so much and you too.

  9. Nice sharing.

    1. Thanks so much.

  10. Good ideas. Valuable post.

    1. Thank you so much.

  11. Great tips. Thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear about the body wash in your eye. Flushing chemicals out of the eyes is never fun.

    1. Thanks. Yeah, it was awful but it happens sometimes. At least it taught me to be more careful.

  12. Good post
    🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

    1. Thanks 🙏☺️

  13. Ha, that is why I only use dove unscented soap 😀 I do use some gel for shaving, but getting that into my eye would take a (bad) miracle. Glad you got the stuff out in the end.

Gratitude is such a game changer. It changes my whole mental outlook and really improves my attitude….

    1. I used to use that soap too (it’s great for sensitive skin) but the one in Kenya has bleach (for skin lightening) so I don’t use it anymore 😞

Absolutely, gratitude and a positive attitude makes all the difference.

  14. All of the above is prt of my routine as well. I also make it a priority to communicate with someone I care about at least once a day, even if it’s for a brief chat or text message.
Hope the eye irritation is sorted by now.
    Good post PoojaG 🙏

    1. That’s really nice. A great way to keep in touch with those you love. Yeah, I’m mostly okay now. Thanks so much 😊

      1. Good to know. 🙏

  16. That’s a lot of great tips, Pooja. Gardening helps me. Blogging has come to my rescue too. I’ve always struggled with meditation. It’s like I can’t turn my mind off. I’ve recently discovered the power of self affirmations too. Trying to practice gratitude as well. These days, I’m doing my best to be kind to myself and take it one day at a time

    1. So sorry that you got body wash in your eye. That must have hurt a lot. I hope you’re feeling better. Thank you for posting this in spite of all you were going through!

      1. Thanks, yeah it hurt like crazy but thankfully I’m almost completely okay now.

        1. I’m glad to hear that

    2. Thanks so much. Gardening sounds really relaxing. I used to have that same issue with mediation but after a few months of daily practice it got much easier to switch off my thoughts for a while.

      1. You’re welcome. Ohh it is very rewarding too. Ohh, that’s great to know. Maybe there’s some hope for me after all!

        1. There is, just stick with it and you’ll get better over time!

          1. Thank you, Pooja.. I’ll try my best 🤞🏽

            1. Good luck! 😊

              1. Thank you. I hope you have a great weekend ahead of you 😊 ❤️ 🤗

                1. Thanks and hope you do too 🤗❤️

    3. I catch myself forgetting to breathe more often than forgetting to think, even when I meditate I’m lucky to turn off my thoughts for more than a few seconds. But when I’m not thinking, I get so bored. I have to remember that taking the time to breathe and not always be taking in information from our frankly unhealthy society is good for me.

      1. I’m sorry to hear that. I hope that you keep remembering to take the time to breathe. Our society can be very unhealthy at times.

        1. I do breathing exercises as part of my daily meditation, which I also often off with yoga for the stretching.

          1. That’s great, all of those are very helpful.

  17. Cheers Pooj. My youngest son suffers with mental health problems and we’ve been trying to help him do some of these things. I would add jigsaws to your list. They are very calming.

    1. Sorry to hear about your son, hopefully he can get the help he needs. Oh true, they’re very calming.

  18. Great pointers.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. My pleasure

  19. I stopped readings newspapers, watching or listening to the news or podcasts of that sort.

    1. Yeah, I think that helps a lot. I avoid the news in general too. It just makes us feel more negative and brings about negative thoughts for things we have little control over.

    2. I’m still interested in local news and international news, but “national news” in America seems like just speculation about what will happen next year.

  20. Great post Pooja. I agree with you. Affirmations actually helped me at some point when I was struggling with my mental health. It served as a catalyst to help my inner self heal. Thanks for sharing. I always like talking about mental health and wellbeing. I’m even currently doing a research study on this topic as well.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, affirmations help a lot. That’s great, hope your research study goes well.

  21. Such a good post! Thanks for sharing, Pooja. For me the belief in the affirmations is most vital. The more you speak it into existing the more real it becomes 🙂

    1. Thanks so much! Absolutely, it puts positive thoughts into our minds and helps us change our thinking patterns 🙂

  22. Great post and great advice. Pooja..I practice many of these steps as I am swimming laps:)

    1. Thank you so much. Swimming can be great for mental health 😊

  23. Great post! 🙂
What I started unconsciously implementing into my daily routine is “gentle-parenting my inner child” because I noticed that when I’m stressing about whatever work that I need to do or anything similar, I can control my stress, take a break, and still get the job done, but a lot of my more complex emotions come from insecurities or problems from childhood. I used to be so harsh on myself, but I realized that this criticism was an echo of the voices I used to hear around me, so now, me being an adult I needed, I’m approaching my inner child, who’s actually feeling this anger and doubt, and I’m just being gentle with myself (I don’t know if I explain myself well.)
Meditation for some reason never worked for me, but I still needed that sphere where I can clear my head, so this dichotomy between my two selves is actually how I help myself, and how I heal.

    1. Thanks so much!
That’s so interesting that you mention that because it’s something my therapist and I were just discussing in my last session. It’s such a great way to work through past trauma and make sure it doesn’t interfere with our current life. I’m so glad it’s helping you and hope it continues to do that.

  24. Love this! Do you mind sharing the name of the gratitude app you use? It sounds good, I enjoy prompts! I think something I try to do every day to boost my mental wellbeing is some sort of escapism for a while like reading a book. It’s gives my mind a time out and I really get lost in a good read. Also listening to music is a nice way to break up the day. Anyway, great post! I’ll for sure be taking your advice on board ✨️💗

    1. Thanks! The app is great, it has positive affirmations, a vision board, a gratitude journal. It’s basically everything you need in one app. This is the one I use: https://www.gratefulness.me/

Oh yeah, that helps so much because it takes you away from the stress of daily life and helps you to just relax a bit 😊

  25. Fabulous post, Pooja! Music is one of my favorite ways to give myself a boost throughout the day. 🙂

    1. Thank you! Music is so great, a perfect way to relax ☺️

  26. Yikes about the body wash! I have this terrible habit of slicing chili peppers and then forgetting that, getting to the shower and rubbing my eyes! It’s terrible. Trying to always wear gloves now. 🙂

Everything you write about here is spot on. I feel exactly that way about meditation, and though I went through a time recently when I was away from doing it, now that I’m back, I notice how much it matters even more.

I’m also very rough on myself and it can be hard to practice self-compassion, but being harsh just activates resistance to change. <3

    1. Oh no, that sounds so painful. I can’t even touch my own skin after cutting peppers I can’t imagine how painful it is when you rub your eyes.

Yeah, I think we don’t notice how much it helps until we stop meditating for a bit and when we start again we’re like wow.

True, I think when we’re harsh we just cause ourselves emotional damage for no reason. Being gentle is a much better approach.

      Thanks ☺️

      1. <3 Easy does it.

    2. If I started keeping track of how often I kick myself, I’d probably start kicking myself for kicking myself.

  27. Great advice, Pooja. I avoid the news and dwell on the positive. Also, blogging is a great to escape along with listening to music. I hope your eye is okay by now. I sometimes get shampoo in my eyes and it’s awful. Take care! 💗

    1. Thanks so much. Oh yeah, news is so depressing I’ve been trying to avoid it as much as possible too. My eye is much better but I think it’ll be a day or two before it’s fully healed. Thanks! 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja, and I am glad your eye is better. 💗

  28. Very good advice Pooja! Meditation and working on my self compassion has been key to my own anxiety and depression as someone has had a rough past with some serious regrets, and for whom medication, -which I no longer take, never led to improvement. But it is definitely not the same for everyone!

I will add being in nature on a regular bases if posible, doesn’t have to be anything special ( it’s all special really!) And also prayer, as someone of faith (but very disident towards organized religion) is incredibly important to me. Although like with meditation, I sometimesforget to pray, and suffer for it afterwards. Also stretches, especially after exercise, are oh so important. Finnaly taking digital breaks, -we shouldn’t feel obligated to be connected or available all of the time!

  29. This is a wonderful post with great information, Pooja.

    1. Thank you so much.

  30. Good morning and happiness Booja

    1. Thanks so much, have a great day.

  31. Very good practices Pooj that I should be doing more often. I try and practice gratitude everyday as well. For one, I usually thank the good Lord for all that he does for me. But, one thing that I recommend for anyone who struggles with self compassion is to write little notes and post them up so you can see them everyday. Words like, I am as good as others. Or I am a strong and good person. Stuff like that. Because negative self talk will not help.

    1. Thank you so much. Gratitude is a wonderful thing, it’s something I’m trying to get into more as well. Yes that’s a good idea and the good way to remind yourself that you are worthy. Negative self talk is definitely a big issue for those that struggle with self-esteem issues.

  32. Oh, and the soap in the eye thing, I recently did that too. I forgot how much that stings.

    1. Oh yeah, it really hurts but thankfully I’m much better now.

      1. That’s good to hear.

  33. Thanks for the great post, hope your eye was ok! I do at least a 20 minute walk every day that really helps me.. sometimes my mind races around about my problems but I try to push them out and give space for other positive or creative thoughts to come in.

    1. Thanks, my eye is good now! Oh nice, it’s great to get your body moving and get some fresh air. And also taking a break from negative thoughts helps a lot too.

  34. You nailed it with this one!!! All of these things are what I preach to clients all the time.

    1. Thank you so much, yes they’re so helpful!

  35. Great suggestions. I started meditating daily when the pandemic hit. It helped calm and normalize things. Recently I started yoga, something I hadn’t done in ten years. I wanted a bit of a morning warm-me-up on those cold mornings as the temperature drops. Affirmations are also a great tip. All these things improve physical and mental health. Great share!

    1. Thank you. Meditating on a regular basis is so helpful with stress and anxiety. Yoga and affirmations are the perfect way to start the day.

      1. My pleasure! Yes, meditation is great for those, too.
