Why I Decided To Delete My Duolingo Profile

EDIT: “Why I Decided To Delete My Duolingo Profile” was written before Duolingo announced that it was an “AI first” company and would lay off their human staff members. Hearing that confirmed that I had made the right decision. I could tell this was the direction it was going to take to be honest and wasn’t a fan of the AI integration as it was since it made the app much less user friendly. Read more about Duolingo’s AI first decision here.

Why I Decided To Delete My Duolingo Profile

I didn’t have too much else to talk about today so I thought I would talk about why I decided to delete my Duolingo profile some time ago. Some of my blogging friends followed me on there so I thought I would talk about it here although generally I am not one to announce every small change I make (I absolutely am, actually lol).

For those of you that don’t know, I’ve been learning German for years now on Duolingo. I’ve talked about it on past posts and at the time loved learning on Duolingo. But for a while now, I’ve noticed changes to the app that have made me less and less excited about my lessons. And recently, I decided to delete my Duolingo profile for good because it just wasn’t working for me anymore.

These are the main reasons why I decided to delete my Duolingo profile:

Too Competitive

When I first started Duolingo (years ago), it was very much focused on the learning aspect but as time went by it became all about the tournaments and doing a minimum amount of XP and challenges etc. It became so competitive which really took away from just focusing on learning the language. It also bugged me that you had hearts as though it’s a video game or something. It’s not and you shouldn’t be punished for getting something wrong. That’s not the way I want to learn a new language or anything new really.

The Ads

It started out with almost no ads, then a few ads and more recently it’s like I spent more times staring at ads I couldn’t care less about than I was learning. It got to the point where the ads were so long and kept trying to push users to buy the paid plans. Like, I’m sorry but not everyone wants that and if someone is interested one or two ads are enough. An ad after every freaking lesson is so exhausting. I get that the app is technically free and ads help keep it that way but at the same time the ads were too excessive. They ruined the experience.

Not Actually Learning Much

In my experience and apparently according to many former Duolingo users, you’re not actually learning much of the language. It felt like we were learning random words and phrases but there’s more to languages than that. If you get to a country and only know words/phrases instead of the actual language you’re going to not be a happy traveller.

Especially towards the end, I really felt like I was learning nothing for a number of reasons. Firstly, like I said I was learning random stuff without a proper lesson on the how’s, why’s, what’s etc. Secondly, because of the hearts system you basically lose a heart every time you get something wrong. Which makes it more like a game than a lesson. I don’t mind getting things incorrect and don’t think users should be penalised for that. It was also obvious they only did this to sell their plans which had infinite hearts. This made learning much less fun and the flow kept getting ruined for me. Lastly, the ads were so much of a distraction that I would cringe after every lesson and again they just ruined my flow/vibe.

Different Language Goals

I already speak four languages, I know how difficult it is to actually learn a language. It’s not just about learning the words, it’s about learning the norms, the slang, the reason certain words are used the way they are and so much more.

Duolingo was a great starting point but it doesn’t offer what I’m looking for when it comes to learning a new language. I actually want to learn everything about it including the history, how it’s changed over time etc. That’s not something Duolingo offers right now so it just didn’t work for my goals.

Final Thoughts

So, that is why I decided to delete my Duolingo profile and move on with my life. I don’t know if I’ll go back to learning German or any other language. Perhaps if I find the right app someday. But for now, I’m focusing on the languages I already know lol.

How many languages are you fluent in? Do you use Duolingo or have you used it in the past? If so, what is/was your experience like? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. I’ve never used Duolingo and am not proficient in any other languages than my native English. I would like to learn a bit of German & Spanish. Do you have a different learning app that you use now?

    1. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Babbel although I haven’t tried it myself: https://uk.babbel.com/

  2. I still open up Duolingo to refresh my Spanish. I like to know literal meaning though and contexts.

    1. That totally makes sense, I’m glad it works for you.

  3. Good for you, I’m glad you have peace about your decision

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, I definitely feel like I’ve made the right decision.

I didn’t like all of the challenges that you had to do with another learner.

    1. Yeah, I found that quite frustrating and unnecessary too.

  5. I studied Spanish and Portuguese. I prefer to practice with real people in person. I might use Rosetta Stone at times. There are also wonderful book resources. I never was a DuoLingo fan. I tried it but too many messages telling me I missed a day of whatever.

    1. That’s what I found frustrating with Duolingo as well. They stopped letting us learn at our own pace and time. It became more like a game than anything else. I think practicing with real people is definitely the best way to learn a language. And true, there are someone great book resources and online resources too.

  6. I’m trying to learn Dutch and been using Duolingo for a couple mo that now. I agree the ads are a bit much and the constant challenges are not for me. I haven’t learned as much as I had hoped now but I’m going to stick with it for a little while longer and see how it goes.

    1. Yeah, the ads and challenges can get annoying. The ads in particular were too much for me. Definitely stick with it and see if it works for you, it’s helpful for some.

  7. Four languages – you are amazing!

    1. Thank you!

  8. Hi Pooja!

Three-four years ago I was using Duolingo. I used it to improve my English and learn new languages.
I tried learning German. And enjoyed it.

Completing targets was the reason I deleted the app. Also the dream of learning too many languages feels fancy but in reality it doesn’t require.

The updates you share are horrible. Using any app with ads is inconvenient. It’s annoying and disturbing. I’m not an AI fan either.
You realise how these technologies develop a big hold on you which contrary to why they were initially made (to help you).

I enjoyed learning German though. I liked the pronounciation of the words in German.
I only remember a few keywords now: brot und wasser, I comme aus India, danke, Deutschland etc. 😂

*Many online services are addictive in nature. They consume a lot of time and efforts. I end up deleting them.

    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Yeah, I didn’t like the targets and challenges because then you’re not able to learn at your own pace. You end up forcing yourself to do lessons which takes the fun out of it.

I agree with you and your observations. In the paid version I use, it is less frustrating due to no ads.
I think I need to find more time if I really want to become fluent in Spanish but for now I’m content since I’m not willing to devote more effort and energy.

    1. Yeah, I didn’t have the paid version so the ads got to a point where I was watching more ads then doing lessons.

  10. I didn’t know that you speak four different languages, Pooj!! So cool. You did 100% the right thing by deleting that account. The owners of that company made a fatal decision for their business. Me, I speak only fluid English. 😊🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    1. Thank you! Absolutely, the company has lost so many users due to AI integration and I hope that helps others see that we are not okay with them replacing humans with AI. Not only does it ruin the experience but it costs people their jobs.

      1. So sad! I’ve never been a fan of AI. It needs to go away.

        1. I feel the same way.

          1. It’s like humans are finding ways to dumb themselves down!

            1. Truly. I feel so bad for the kids in school right now since so many of them rely on ChatGPT to complete assignments and homework. They may think it’s they’re getting away with it now but one day they’re going to turn into adults who have no proper skills or education.

              1. Bingo! So sad, Pooja. I graduated high school in 1979, can’t imagine what it’s like these days.

                1. I graduated more recently but I think with the introduction of AI things have completely changed in the last few years.

                  1. I’m sure you did graduomore recently! 😂❤️❤️ I don’t like the changes but there’s nothing I can do.

                    1. Lol 😝❤️
True, nothing any of us can do when it comes to AI.

                    2. Sometimes I wonder if these movie companies are trying to get the public used to the idea of a catastrophe coming. Grooming us for what is ahead… That’s weird I guess but I have to wonder.

                    3. You know, I think you may have a point. It’s weird that this has been predicted for years now.

                    4. See? I hope I’m wrong but things are gonna get worse before they get better. Not trying to be negative.

                    5. I think it’s more realistic than negative. Things are definitely getting worse especially when it comes to AI.

                    6. 😭😭👎🏻

  11. Thanks for this info. Yeah, doesn’t sound like they way I would want to learn.

    1. Yeah, it’s been awful with the AI and unnecessary ads.

  12. I stopped using the app for pretty much the same reasons.

    1. A lot of people seem to have. A couple of my friends told me they stopped using it too.

  13. Honey I’m proud of you for deleting it. I know it was hard to let it go but you saved yourself a lot of hours and headaches just to keep the streak going. Good job 👏

    1. Thank you. I’m sure I did because by the end I was just forcing myself to do the lessons. The ads and competitions had ruined the fun parts of it.

      1. I would repeat easy lessons to keep the streak going. I felt bad leaving as if I was letting people down, but I wasn’t getting anything valuable from keeping the streak going. I wrote a blog post about it after quitting Duolingo. It made me feel better about leaving the app and honestly I don’t regret it at all! It’s honestly so freeing!

P.S. I don’t recall having ads. If they did that to me I would have definitely left the app. Ads are so distracting!

        1. Yeah, towards the end I was repeating easy older lessons too because I wanted to keep the streak and my place in the league. It honestly is so freeing to quit the app, I felt like I was so happy to let it go and was very ready to move on from it! Their learning style had become so toxic.

That’s so lucky, I had an insane amount of ads and was wasting more time watching ads then I was doing lessons. That really pushed me to quit.

          1. It does sound like a toxic relationship. I’m happy for you for quitting and leaving that toxic app! 👏

            1. I’m glad you did too, there’s much better apps out there for languages!

  14. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  15. I have attempted to learn a few languages, one of them was German. Now I know it had been a waste of time, every other language I learned was super useful even Latin. I learned a bit of French, it helped me out while traveling in France, I learned a bit of Italian, was super helpful in Italy, with Spanish I know I can get by at work every single day. I live and work as a teacher in the US due to my English.
Now let me tell you something about my experience in Germany. It wasn’t necessary as everyone spoke English or Russian (!). My leftover German was so weak and random, it was completely irrelevant. The only way for me to boast my knowledge is when I ask a student to stop using swear words in German. It is super funny actually, because lots of my kids believe I’m German no matter how many times I said I’m not. They will throw in Danke here and there or Scheiße which is the only swear word I know.

    1. Wow, that’s interesting to know. I guess German wasn’t something you needed to be fluent in. It’s impressive you can speak so many other languages though. Even basic amounts help a lot when traveling. Haha Scheiße is one of the few swear words I learnt in German too.

      1. I’m not real good at them, just like you say knowing a hundred words or so will give you basic understanding of the things while traveling.
Body language is probably the one I speak fluently lol

        1. Lol body language is the one I don’t know much about.

          1. We communicate 80% of information non verbally. So you are probably better at it than you know

            1. I hope so lol.

  16. I’ve never used duolingo but after reading about your experiences I think you made the right decision. Games and AI etc., is not the way to do it.

    1. Yeah, it felt more like a competition then an app for learning languages which sucks because when I first started using Duolingo it was great and I learnt so much.

  18. The part about AI integration really just seals the deal honestly. I had been considering Duolingo for a while now but hearing your reasoning and many other factors of my own it’s going to have to be a hard pass lol

And you’re right, Duolingo doesn’t cover some of the nuances in language. Some of the colloquial bits and cultural sensitivities fly past users — and thats messed up.

    1. Yeah, the app was already going downhill and the constant AI integration (which frankly made learning so much more difficult) was frustrating. I’m glad I left before it became fully AI. Exactly, you only learn words and phrases but not the proper way to use them as native speakers would. I’m thinking about trying out Babbel I’ve been hearing good things about it online and from a friend that uses it for French.

      1. I hope you’ll let us know how you find Babbel if you eventually try it out.

Would be useful. I want to learn Mandarin😅

        1. Will do, I probably will give it a try because I don’t want to give up on German completely. I just need a good app.

  19. I understand what you mean about the ads. It seems YouTube is pushing more and more ads to the point where what you are watching is shorter than the ad, lol. I know the purpose is to make more money, but it is still frustrating when you don’t want to pay to get rid of the ads. I know a bit of French from night courses that I attended, but I have forgotten most of it. I have Spanish and Mandarin Rosetta Stone, but also have not kept up on it.

    1. Urgh yes don’t even get me started with YouTube ads. I will literally never pay for premium though, it’s just not worth it in my opinion. Yeah, the purpose is to make money but there should be some boundaries. Like ads every minute or so is way too much.
Interesting, I used to take French in school but have literally forgotten all of it lol.

  20. I also deleted Dulingo a while back because of the ADs too many and frustrating. And I was also learning deutsch. But a friend introduced me to another app, I’m yet to try it

    1. Yeah, it got to a point where there were more ads then lessons. Hopefully, the other app will be better for you.

      1. Subscription ain’t no way

  21. I wanted to learn Arabic on Duolingo but it’s not been offered there. I think you made the right call

    1. Yeah, it’s definitely better to check other apps instead. Especially if you’re looking to learn pronunciations which I found Duolingo was not good for. Since they use AI the pronunciations were robotic and didn’t sound accurate.

      1. Very right.

  22. You speak four languages? Nice! I can speak 3.5.
American, Canadian, British and I can say “taco” and “burrito” so I figure that counts for mexican 😉

    1. Well there you go, you speak almost four languages too 😅

      1. Just like almost all Muricans 😉

  23. I used Duolingo a long time ago to refresh my Spanish. It wasn’t what I expected, and I opted out. I heard that Babbel is better.

    1. Yeah, a friend of mine switched from Duolingo to Babbel for French and said she likes it a lot better.

  24. Havent used duolingo since it first started. But once these apps begin prioritizing ads and profit margins, they become useless…as always.
    A good post, btw, Pooja.

    1. It was great when it first started but for the last two or three years it’s become consistently worse. Thanks so much.

      1. That’s seems to be the consensus. Loving the new look btw.

        1. Thanks so much 😊

  25. Well, I’m bummed to hear this information but glad to have it. Thanks for your honesty Pooja.

    1. Thanks. Yeah, I was sad to realise that I hadn’t really progressed much for the last year or two because most of my time was wasted with ads and the lessons just weren’t as helpful.

  26. What are the four languages you speak? And what is your first? So impressive.

    1. Thank you. I speak English, Swahili, Gujarati and Hindi. My first language is Gujarati.

      1. Wow!! That’s fantastic!

        1. Thanks! Most people in Kenya speak at least three languages.

          1. Yeah, we’re lazy in the US. It’s a big deal if we speak to.

            1. It could also be that you don’t need to speak multiple languages to get by whereas in Kenya you would need to speak at least English and Swahili.

  27. What 4 languages do you speak?

    1. I speak English, Swahili, Gujarati and Hindi.

  28. Lovely post Pooja! Great initiative to make your voice heard when companies prioritize bottom lines over people. Luckily, my boss views AI as a tool to help employees rather as an alternative.

    1. Thank you so much. I think we need to absolutely make our voices heard when AI is causing mass layoffs. I’m glad to hear that your boss is understanding.

      1. We definitely need to make our voices heard. I am very much concerned when people like Musk and Lutnick envision replacing people with bots. It removes the basic right of living a life with dignity. People dependent on basic income provided by the state will be at their mercy. It is a terrifying situation.

        1. It is definitely terrifying and it’s going to get much worse as AI becomes more common.

  29. I can barely get English right (haha) but do “know” enough of the romance languages to get by or at the very least make people laugh! I agree with you, though, about learning the history and subtle nuisances. I definitely love urban language (slang), and sign language is so fun to learn! Music is another language that takes a lifetime to become fluent and there are so many more, I want to wrap my brain around! I knew you were smart, and four languages is beyond impressive; going for genius level, I see (lol)! Excellent post, Pooja <3 and thank you for the reminder, brilliant soul! 😀

    1. Ooh sign language has always fascinated me, I hope I can learn it someday. I think it can really come in handy! True, music is such a beautiful universal language we all speak. Aw thank you so much, as are you of course! 😊💕

  30. I got bored with Duolingo and deleted my profile, too.

    1. Yeah, it gets very repetitive and boring.

  31. Although ultimately I do understand it is their choice, I still think that it’s really such a shame about them becoming an ‘A.I first’ company now. I would use Duolingo for a while, and then not come back to it for years and then use it again for awhile. I never could be consistent with it.

    1. I totally agree. Even if it is their choice, it was not an ethical one to have made and I hope such negative choices have consequences because it led to real people losing their jobs. I was quite consistent with it but to be honest it had gotten really lame for the last year or so.

      1. YESSSS EXACTLY! These are REAL people! With REAL families to feed. And with A.I starting to slowly become self aware, it’s all just starting to feel gross to me! It’s like we’re hitting the self-destruct button. 🙄

        1. The fact that they used us to train AI while giving us none of the profit and making billions pisses me off too. If people are laid off due to AI they need to be compensated. Yup, it definitely feels like that and I have a feeling things are going to get worse.

  32. I didn’t know you are learning German. Super interesting. I didn’t take to Duolingo well so there’s nothing to quit, but it was always in my mind to try again. Now i know I can skip that. 🙂 Thanks.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, you can definitely skip it and if you would like to learn a new language I’ve heard good things about Babbel.

  33. I’ve used it in the past and just opened it up last week to begin again….and was reminded why I stopped. The sheer repetition of some words and not ever moving on is one of the biggest reasons I quit using it. I think it’s time to say good bye permanently. I’d be interested to know if you find another app that is more helpful?

    1. Yeah, I had that issue too. Although I haven’t tried it myself, I’ve heard good things about Babbel. It’s apparently much better than Duolingo.

      1. I’ll have to check that one out, thank you! 💞

        1. You’re welcome and hopefully it’s better than Duo!
