The Home

The Home

Once upon a time, there was a happy family that lived in this home. They spent every day together, laughing and enjoying one another’s company. But as time went by things began to change rapidly. There was a bad apple that infiltrated the close-knit family and the cracks began to show. One by one they abandoned what was once their home and now it lays in shambles. Legend has it, you can still hear the laughter that once filled the rooms day and night. They may have forgotten but the house still remembers when it was a home.

The Home

About “The Home”:

This short story was a response to Kevin’s NTT post for the week. I love his NTT prompt images. Do check out his blog for more.

It’s been a while since I wrote a short story but when I saw these images I thought they would work so well together. Also, this may be the first story I’ve ever started with “once upon a time.”

What inspired the story was that I’m a big believer in one rotten apple can spoil the bunch because I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes. There have been so many instances where I have seen families and friend groups torn apart because of one narcissist that came in and caused trouble among them. Now to be fair, there were probably some issues already existing. But some people just have a way of bringing out the worst in others.

Have you ever witnessed something like that where one person ruins it for everyone? Let me know in the comments below. Or simply stop by and say hi!

I recently published a book, All The Words I Kept Inside. Check it out here.

  1. Excellent short story, Pooja! And yes, I have seen one person ruin it for the whole group several times. It happens way more often than it should!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, unfortunately it does happen quite often 😕

  2. Great post, so true, one person can ruin it for everyone.

    1. Thanks and yeah it definitely happens.

  3. Reminds me a bit of the Hans Christian Anderson tale, Everything in its right place.

    1. Thank you so much.

  4. That’s tough, but definitely happens a lot. Great short story, Pooja. Hope you’re doing good friend 🙂

    1. Thank you and I am, hope you’re doing well too 🙂

      1. I am as well. I may also have a manuscript for you to read within a few weeks. I’ll keep you posted thanks Pooja.

        1. Ooh that’s exciting, wow.

          1. Yes! It’s given me some anxiety, but that’s ok. I can’t wait to show you and see what you think. This one is basically like a blend of Psycho and Little Red Riding Hood 🙂

            1. It is a scary thing but also so exciting, yay can’t wait to read it!

  5. The rotten apple. An apt description and yes sadly I have seen it occur Pooja, great short story

    1. Thank you so much. I have too, it’s really sad how one person can ruin things for many.

  6. That is a very poignant short story and beautiful at the same time. Yes I’ve seen how one person’s misbehavior can cause a lot of trauma and pain. I’ve seen it many times.

    1. Thank you so much. Yeah, I have too and it’s sad that just one person can ruin things for so many.

  7. I, too, have seen the “one rotten apple spoils the bunch” phenom. Plenty of times.

    1. Yeah, it happens quite often and it really sucks.

  8. Why should a bad apple in the family drive the others out. Logic would have the story driving the bad apple out so the house could be preseerved and those remaining happy.

    1. Yeah, logically that would have been the case but unfortunately life is not always logical. I’ve seen it happen so many times.

  9. A good stor

This happens. Present day homes are different than the previous ones.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah it definitely does.

  13. great story, Pooja…
” but the house still remembers when it was a home…” this line is sticking lol…

the rotten apple lol … way too common unfortunately 😬

    🤍

    1. Thank you so much. Yup unfortunately so 🫣

      1. pleasure always 🤍

  14. “The house still remembers when it was a home” hit me, very moving! I know someone being affected by a narcissist and its very hard to see them being treated with no respect 💔

    1. Thank you so much! I’ve seen that happen due to narcissism too and it’s so sad. It’s like a game for narcissists to see how much they can ruin 😕

  15. Oh yeah, one bad apple is all it takes.
Sadly, if that bad apple isn’t willing to face up to what they are doing, the only way for the group to survive is to cut them out pronto.

    1. Yup, absolutely. I think that’s honestly the only way with some people.

Sad story…or the feeling I got was sad for the family.

    1. Yeah, it has sad notes to it for sure. Thank you.

  17. Excellent short story, Pooja! I’ve seen this happen many times when one person ruins it for the rest.

    1. Thank you! Yeah, I’ve seen it happen too and it’s so sad.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja.

  18. Oh this is so touching and most true on many ways of what happens in families and how sad it is with one bad apple but I love they remain in the heart to be heard. 🩷

    1. Yup, it’s honestly so sad when it happens but I think even in real life the good memories will still remain 💗

      1. It’s so true and that’s a good way to look at it, Pooja~!😎

  19. I was reflecting on group dynamics a few days ago, remembering someone who came into a well-functioning group and began to have small side groups. It was subtle at first but then the side groups came to seem to exist in contrast rather than as part of the main. Without that happening, the main group probably would have survived longer, but the type of group it was, there was never a mechanism to deal with those kinds of dynamics. Not much you can do while still remaining an ‘open’ community.

    1. I’ve seen something extremely similar happen and it’s so sad to see people go their own ways because of one person creating fractions.

      1. Absolutely. I am still working with what the next phase of that group was meant to be and whether there is a way to bring that kind of energy into world in other ways.

  20. Engaging story, Pooja, a metaphor perhaps for the human heart (which is itself a metaphor, I guess, for our spirit with its dreams and hopes). Yes, I have experienced the one person who ruins all, almost as if it was his or her plan. But you have a good, heart-filled week.

    1. Thank you so much. Yes, it does seem like that’s what they set out to do. Thanks and you as well.

  21. I believe the energy we give off remains in a home or other place. The house continues to speak. Good story, Pooja.

    1. I very much think so too. Thank you so much.

  22. Oh yes! These narcissists know exactly what buttons of insecurities to push in others so it can sow just enough disorder for them to infect and destroy everything with their chaos.

    1. Yup, absolutely. They literally set out to do that and ruin other peoples lives.

  23. I think I have seen something like that one: a person in power makes wrong decisions and the rest of the people have to pick up pieces. Do we give them power or do they just get it somehow? This is something I want to know. Changes do not happen overnight but when you think far enough back you see how it’s been slow and gradual decline.

    1. I think it happens because people are often more easily manipulated than they realise. Especially when they are at their lowest.

  24. I see old houses falling down in farm fields near here and I often wonder what life must have been like when the house was first built and what made people neglect those houses to the point that they would cave in.

    1. Some are fully abandon and I always wonder why that is, what was the story behind it.

  25. My heart aches for the family that was and the house that cared for them. Beautifully written, Pooja! 💞💞💞

    1. Thank you so much! Unfortunately it’s a reality for some 💔

  26. Good story. Indeed there are people in the society who act as rotten apples and other people’s joy 🙁

    1. *and kill other people’s joy.

    2. Thanks so much. Yes, unfortunately there are more people like that out there than we realise. 🙁

  27. Wonderful inspiration converted into an excellent story.

    1. Thank you so much.

  28. Yes, those bad apples can ruin the physical home as well as relationships if we let them.

    1. Absolutely, if we don’t cut off people like that they’ll just keep trying and trying to destroy relationships.

  29. it happened to me and my family and it was all my fault. i found out later that i let a narcissist in me and my family’s life i feel so stupid

    1. That’s awful I’m so sorry you went through that. But it’s not your fault, narcissists are really good at pretending to be normal. They fool most people.

      1. Yeah thats true. learned alot i will never let it happen again

        1. Glad you learnt from the experience and now you’ll know how to spot a narcissist.

  30. Love this short story! Wonderfully written, Pooja! 💗🌹

    1. Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! 💕😊

      1. It’s always a pleasure to read you, Pooja! 💗🌹
