When the first Knives Out movie came out, I was one of the first to tell you how amazing it was and how much I enjoyed it. When Glass Onion, the second in the series, came out- I told you how much I had disliked it. It was predictable, boring, unfunny and although it did try to share important messages about the world we live in I felt that they didn’t do a good job of it and in the end it was too poorly written to have an impact. Just my opinion of course.

Well, recently Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery came out and of course I had to watch it and share my review. My dad and I ended up watching it over Christmas and having watched the trailer when the movie was first released, I knew I would very likely enjoy it. And enjoy it I did. Thoroughly so. I wanted to share my review of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery in sections just to make it easier to follow and to make sure I don’t forget anything.

Plot

I loved the plot, from beginning to end. It was much more well written compared to the last movie. The plot was interesting, kept you on edge as a good murder mystery should and most importantly it made sense. There weren’t any major or unforgivable discrepancies or errors. No unexplainable holes in the plot that ruin the whole thing.

If you’re a fan of traditional murder mysteries or a fan of Benoit Blanc, you will very much enjoy this one.

One of the main things I loved about the plot, that stood out to me, was that it was subtle. I’m sort of sick of people writing mysteries and thrillers like their audience is stupid. We’re not stupid and if anything we enjoy the subtle, between the lines themes and messages. I loved that this one had a lot of that without being too obvious about it. It felt cleverly written, at least to me.

Characters

As soon as I saw the cast for this movie, I knew they would do a fantastic job with the characters they played and that was very much the case. Not one single character was disappointing. The actors in this movie truly brought their characters to life and as always Daniel Craig was great as Benoit Blanc. Every character was complex, multidimensional, easy to both love and hate, brought out strong emotions and of course, seemed capable of murder.

Mystery

I’m not going to lie, about one fourth of the way in I was pretty sure whodunit. And it was the person I suspected. However, that doesn’t make this a bad murder mystery. Not at all. Because I don’t think the goal of the movie was so much about who but rather about the why. The why and how is what allowed the movie to explore themes central to it.

Hate, misogyny, control, greed, selfishness, pride, hunger for power and so much more. All of these are constantly present in the world, slowly sucking the life out of us like a disease. And yet, there’s hope, there’s good in the world too which I think was what Father Jud’s character was supposed to be a metaphor for. He wasn’t perfect but he was a good person that learnt from his mistakes. And the contrast between his character and that of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks is very evident. Monsignor Jefferson Wicks is “religious” but does not actually live according to the Bible and quickly excuses his own digressions while constantly judging others. Something that is specifically warned against.

Back to the how and why. Although the who was pretty clear to me, the why and especially the how was not until the end of the movie. That is one of the BIGGEST compliments I can give a murder mystery. I’ve been obsessed with reading mysteries literally since I could read. Even before I could read actually because my parents would read Enid Blyton’s mystery books to me before bed when I was too young to read them myself. Generally, I can almost always guess the who, how and why. Even if not exactly, I can guess most of it or come very close. That will tell you what a good job they did with this one.

Overall

Overall, I very much enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Perhaps not as much as the OG Knives Out movie but this was definitely my second favourite and one of the best murder mysteries I’ve seen this year. The cast of well known actors was perfect, the writing was amazing, the vibe was on point. I honestly can’t find anything to whine about when it came to this movie which honestly may be a first here on LifesfineWHINE lol.

If you’re a fan of traditional murder mysteries (like Agatha Christie’s books), you will certainly enjoy this movie very much. I would absolutely, strongly recommend it.

  1. I have not watched any of the movies, in this series, but I love murder mysteries, so I may give this one a try, where can I get it, is it streaming on net flicks?

    1. If you like murder mysteries, I think you’ll enjoy these. I believe all the first Knives Out movie is on Amazon Prime and the other two are on Netflix.

  2. I have not watched any of the movies but your in depth positive review is certainly intriguing and it sounds like a great movie.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, I enjoyed the mystery very much.

  3. Sorry, I’ve never heard of this movie.

    1. That’s fair, I think it’s mostly popular with people that love murder mysteries.

      1. Which I never gave, Pooja. 😌

  4. I have seen it’s on in movie theaters here. It looks intriguing. I could watch a classic murder mystery, back in the day I enjoyed Boris Akunin’s books. I’m pretty sure there are at least two movies I’ve seen, the best on is The State Counselor (2005) . I remember I enjoyed it a lot mostly because of the actors. But overall a good movie if you are looking for something fresh.

    1. Yeah, I believe it’s on Netflix too. If you enjoy those sort of murder mysteries I think you’ll really enjoy this one.

      1. Should be going on Tuesday

        1. Have fun, lmk if you like it.

  5. I hated its portrayal of Christians. My mother and I couldn’t watch past thirty minutes. Very offensive was Josh Brolin’s first confession.

    1. That’s totally fair. Although I believe overall the point of the movie was to criticise Christians that are only “religious” as a way to gain power and control like Josh Brolin’s character and this is contrasted by Father Jud who actually lives his life according to what the Bible teaches- compassion, kindness and love.

      1. Agree but it was so gross at the beginning that we couldn’t stay with it. Have a Happy New Year!

        1. Totally understand. Happy New Year!!

  6. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  7. Thank you for the review. I thought Knives Out was okay, which put me at odds with the rest of my family. The Koreans made a series with a similar story, and I have to say I enjoyed it much better.

I couldn’t get past the first 20 minutes of Glass Onion and so never finished it.

However, I really enjoyed Dead Man which was in the vein of a Jonathan Creek type mystery. So, out of the dog house and back into the family mainstream 😂

    1. Oh wow, I think you’re the first person that’s told me they don’t like Knives Out haha. But that’s fair, to each their own. Glass Onion was awful, I wish I could unwatch it. I’m glad you enjoyed Wake Up Dead Man, I think it had a much more classic murder mystery feel to it. 😀

    1. If she enjoys watching murder mysteries I think she’ll like this one. They did a great job with the plot and the murder itself was complicated in the best way.

  9. Like you, Pooja, I enjoyed the first movie, was very disappointed with the second, and loved the third… Here’s to the fourth! 🤗

    1. Glad you enjoyed this one too, really hope the fourth one is as good! 🤗

  10. Might just give that a spin. Cheers Pooj.

    1. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, I feel like the plot is one you’ll connect with.

  11. I thought it was the weakest of the three movies. It was missing that classic character interaction between all the suspects that really made me question what could have happened.

    1. That’s true, that was one of the things missing in this one and that’s probably the main reason I enjoyed the first Knives Out a bit more than this one.

  12. I didn’t like the first Knives Out movie very much, but I’ve only seen it once, so I’ll have to rewatch it sometime. I liked the second one, but the third installment is definitely my favorite. I watched Wake Up Dead Man a few days before Christmas. I really enjoyed the entire cast, the plot and theming of this film. It did take me a few seconds to get used to Daniel Craig’s character with the messy hairdo.

    1. That’s really interesting. I think this one is very different than the first one which is probably why you enjoyed it more. Haha I liked his hair like that actually.

  13. Good movie. I just realized there were previous movies to this so I watched them also.

    1. Did you like the other two as well?

  14. I skimmed through your post as I want to watch it. I’ve watched the first two movies.

    1. I’m sure you’ll like this one if you enjoyed the last two. The plot was very interesting.

      1. Yes, I did enjoyed the first one very much, the second one not that much.

        1. I felt the same way.

          1. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  15. I keep hearing how good this movie is. I’ve only seen the first one, and honestly, wished they would’ve left it there. I hate when Hollywood takes a popular movie and turns it into a franchise that’s not as good.

I might check this out, though.

    1. That’s how I felt after watching the second one, Glass Onion, but I think this one redeemed it. It had an interesting plot, great cast and I loved the murder- it was much more unique.

      1. Exactly 💯 what a mess it was!

  16. Thanks for the review… I watched previous ones. 1st one was really great and 2nd one was a disaster. Was wondering how this one would turn out.

    1. I felt the same way, I really liked the first one but the second was disappointing. This one is great though, I would very much recommend it.

      1. I would watch it then on 31st

        1. Let me know what you think of it.

          1. I would do that next thing 🙌

  17. Knew 17 minutes in 😉 (lol) and like you grew up with this genre! Didn’t see the second one and the first was okay too me but Wake Up Dead Man had an outstanding cast and gripping storyline! Some moments I could see would be very difficult to watch but that was pertinent to the ending! Awesome review!

    1. The who was quite obvious wasn’t it 😂 Yessss, this cast and plot was fantastic, I knew from the trailer it would be really good. Thank you!!

      1. It wasn’t but the actor = infamous and might be my fav dramatic actress, ever! I didn’t have many expectations and thought I was going to check out early … but stayed the whole time (lol)!

        1. Haha I was nervous after the last movie and wasn’t sure about this one but I’m glad they went out of their way with this one!

  18. Thankfully, it’s not Netflix. Seems like an interesting one. I’ll watch it.

    1. On Netflix I mean

    2. It’s one of those murder mysteries that makes you think and stays with you. Yup, it’s on Netflix.

  19. “Hate, misogyny, control, greed, selfishness, pride, hunger for power and so much more.” I think you have it all together there as a blueprint for any modern novel. LOL.

  20. An excellent review. I had a chance to see this movie recently and absolutely loved it. I felt that it was a magnificent murder mystery and a fantastic sequel. While it isn’t quite as great as the first Knives Out, I felt it captured the enduring appeal of the series. It’s my second favourite of the series and one of my favourite films of the year. Definitely worth watching on Netflix.

Here’s my thoughts on the movie:

    1. My apologies for the late response, your comment was stuck in my spam folder.

Thank you so much. I agree, it wasn’t as good as the first Knives Out movie but was still probably the best murder mystery of the year. Thanks for sharing your review, I’m off to read it.

  21. YES! I couldn’t agree more. I just recently watched it on Friday and loved this movie so much. Rarely can you find a funny mystery that is well done like this one. It was a longer film but worth it because the pacing didn’t slow down and the characters have so much depth. You just inspired me to write a great review about it as well. Good Work!

    1. So well done and showed both sides of the coin on the issues they covered. Funny, witty and a really great mystery! I look forward to reading your review on it as well and thank you!

  22. Great post. I have to check out the movie

    1. Definitely check it out if you like murder mysteries, it was really good.
