Although there is some amazing advice out there for bloggers here are some pieces of advice I’ve heard often that don’t really work- at least not for me.
Tags– A lot of sites tell you to be very specific with your tags like instead of “food” tag it “lasagna” or “sandwich” but in my opinion this is a really bad idea for multiple reasons. First of all there are a huge number of people who would be interested in food or larger topics in general compared to the number of people interested in a specific thing. By being specific you are losing a lot of traffic. Furthermore, more people are likely to search a general topic on search engines like food rather then a specific one and so again you would be losing traffic.
Niche- A lot of people advice that you stick to one or a minimum amount…

I use both categories and tags on my blog but it seems like a waste of time…

I guess it depends on whether or not you’re using keywords on the tags section too

Oh that’s quite interesting to note. I used to think that they help drive the right traffic to your posts.

An insightful, unique post. Had a lot to learn from this. I especially agree with the first point and last point. The last one’s an especially unpopular notion but sometimes, interacting with a spammer might work in your favour too. 🙂

That’s so true. I just read a book that says one wants to mix up the tags–non-specific ones and specific ones together.

Yeah I totally agree with that book. That’s what works best in my opinion.

I completely agree with your points. You lose a lot of traffic if you use a specific tag instead of a general tag and if your blog is a niche blog. When we have a niche blog people do have the choice to read from different topics but in a niche blog, they don’t have a choice.

Yeah absolutely. Broader tags have a much larger audience and statistically you’re more likely to reach more people on those.

Hey Poojq, you really did call out some of these tips well and it makes sense. I’m probably going to avoid some of these tips now for my blog.
