I Tried Blaze So You Wouldn’t Have To- Here’s What Happened

I Tried Blaze So You Wouldn’t Have To

I am sure you most of you have read about Blaze. For those that haven’t, Blaze is a feature that was released a while ago on WordPress. It’s an advertising feature that helps bloggers push their content to a larger audience. Many bloggers have mixed feelings about this feature and I did too. So, when I was given a $50 credit to use on Blaze for participating in a meeting with WordPress, I decided to put it to use. I tried Blaze so you wouldn’t have to and decided to share my results so that you can know if it’s a feature worth using or not.

Here’s What Happened

I Tried Blaze So You Wouldn't Have To- Here's What Happened

Overall, I was very unimpressed with the results. They were anticlimactic to say the least. What I was focused on is seeing if Blaze would increase my views, likes and comments. This is the post I shared and these are the results I got:

Impressions Vs Views

I Tried Blaze So You Wouldn't Have To- Here's What Happened

The first thing I noticed was the difference in how many impressions the post got versus how many views I actually got both organically and through the Ad. The main point of using services such as Blaze is to increase your views (not impressions) as well as your click-through rate because at the end of the day you want to get them on your blog. That’s why you’re using this service. Impressions means that people saw your post on their Reader but did not click on it to read it. Clicks are the number of people that actually clicked on the post and read it.

Now, as you can tell from the above stats, I got a lot of impressions but barely any views. And that was a big disappointment because as I said the primary goal of using an Ads feature would be to acquire more views.

The Audience

I Tried Blaze So You Wouldn't Have To- Here's What Happened

You may be wondering why I got so many impressions but not as many views? Well, I think Blaze isn’t great at finding the right audience for your content. Yes, you can pick which audience to push the post towards. However, WordPress should be pushing it to people who follow the tags you used on your post or have shown prior interest to content similar to your post. That’s what most platforms do with Ads and that’s why they are successful. I think this is something WP needs to manually work on instead of leaving it up to AI which is what is currently happening. AI recommends to you the audience, interests and location.

Is It Worth It?

I Tried Blaze So You Wouldn't Have To | Is Blaze Worth It?

I tried Blaze so you wouldn’t have to because I wanted to know if it was worth it. So, is it worth it? Right now, it’s going to be a no from me. Impressions are worth nothing if the click-through rates are so low. I got more views organically in that period of time than I did through Ads simply by using good SEO tactics for the post which by the way is free. If WordPress did improve Blaze at some point in the future improving the click-through rates then I would rethink my opinion. But for now, I don’t think it’s worth it.

Something that also sticks in my craw is that I already pay WordPress for my plan so shouldn’t they be pushing the content anyway? To me, it’s not fair that bloggers have to pay extra for their content to be seen. A few years back you could get thousands of monthly views and hundreds of followers in a month. And now, you have to work extra hard to even retain the measly amount of views you get. Suspiciously, the views went down for many bloggers right around the time Blaze was introduced…

So, I’ll be giving Blaze a big no for now.

What are your thoughts on Blaze? Have you ever tried using it? Did it yield positive results? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear your thoughts. Or simply stop by and say hi!

Instead of using Blaze, why not use my blogging advice by clicking here. It’s free and yields results!

  1. Thanks for trying Blaze for us and giving us your summary and review. The information that came through Blaze is interesting and maybe revelatory. But the fact that the feature gave you numbers that didn’t seem all that relevant and thus helpful definitely detracts from the investment. Way to go with the credit, though!

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, I found Blaze to be quite disappointing and didn’t want anyone to waste their money with it. If I had gotten more clicks it would have been worth it but I got more clicks organically in the same week than I did through Blaze.

I also tried blaze to popularize my blog. specifically this post https://ilastia.com/choosing-best-truck-accident-lawyer-near-you/. It didn’t yield much positive results. Google ads remain the best option especially the search ads. Thanks!

  2. Informative blog, Pooja, thank you for sharing it😊🥰🤗👏👏👍

    1. Thank you so much, glad it was informative 😊

  3. Sounds like a huge NO. Most traffic generating as well us a pie in the sky nonsense.

    1. Yup, absolutely. It’s just not worth it.

  4. Thanks for trying Blaze and sharing your experience, because I’d surely be disappointed to get those results after spending hard earned money.

    1. Yeah, I didn’t want anyone to unnecessarily waste their money with Blaze because yes you get impressions but so few actual views.

  5. Well thanks for saving my money PooG! 🤗

You tried blaze I wouldn’t have to 😛

I was curious about blaze, now I’m not

    1. Now you know it’s not worth it lol 😅

      1. Good Job PooG!!

        How’s your health now?

        1. Much better, thanks 😊

  6. I wanted to express my gratitude for sharing your experience with WordPress Blaze. Your honest review saved me from potential disappointment and financial loss. Thank you for taking the time to share your insights, and I’m relieved I didn’t invest more time and money based on false promises.

    1. Thanks so much. I’m glad the post was informative. That’s the reason I wanted to share my results, because I don’t want others to waste their money with it. In my opinion, it’s definitely not worth it.

  7. This just sounds like yet another way for WordPress to continue to line their pockets.

Thank you for the review. I was DEF not going to give it a try anyway. 😆🤣😂 Thanks for taking one for the team, Pooja!

    1. Yup, I’m pretty sure it is. Over time I’ve noticed that WP only cares about profits and not its users. Especially over the last couple of years.

Lol, thanks. Yeah it’s only because I got the $50 in credits 😅

      1. Haha. Yup! So, basically, they paid for you to test it. Exactly. Lol. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

        1. And got a bad review out of it lol 😅

          1. Yaaasss, honey bunny! Lol.

  8. Thank you so much for telling us!

    1. Happy to share my results!

  9. Thank you. I always see it, but never thought about using it. I know I won’t use Blaze, it just didn’t seem right , and to be honest in my opinion it doesn’t fit. I think it was a waste of time for them to even have it on the home page advertising it.

    1. Yeah, it’s not worth it and I always find that organic traffic is best anyway.

  10. Thanks for sharing your important insights.

    1. Happy to, I hope it saves other bloggers some time and money.

  11. I haven’t tried Blaze, or paid ads, but after doing research, I find it can be a devil’s bargain, so I’m not surprised to hear about Blaze

    1. Yeah, absolutely. I think the only ads that are worth it are on TikTok and IG. The rest are really not worth it as they don’t get it to your target market.

      1. I agree. Facebook ads are sometimes good, but not always

        1. Never tried Ads on Facebook but yeah that makes sense.

  12. Thanks for letting us know. Seems a lot of things are like that now, gibe them big bucks and they basicly make your traffic less than usual. Will be clicking that link for the advice.. thanks for that

    1. Yup, that’s exactly it. All these major platforms just want to make a profit but don’t actually care about users.

  13. No interest in that feature for me.

    1. I don’t think it’s worth your interest any way. Organic traffic is always better.

  14. I was wondering about ads and if they were worth it. Thanks for a great post.

    1. It’s not worth it. If you really want to get your writing to a larger audience advertise with other bloggers instead of with WP, share guest posts, take part in collaborations and make your posts SEO friendly. That will get you way more traffic (and backlinks).

  15. Everybody wants your money.

  16. Thanks for this insightful post. Been considering Blaze for a while. I guess this gives me better perspective.
Please can you write on the SEO tactics you use or link to the article if you already have one?

    1. My pleasure. Yeah, if you’re considering using Blaze this is something to think of. I think if you’re looking to grow your traffic it’s better to advertise with bloggers instead of WP in general, have SEO friendly posts, share guest posts on other blogs and take part in collaborations- the latter two help increase backlinks too.
Sure, these are all my posts about SEO: https://lifesfinewhine.ca/?s=SEO

      1. Thank you Pooja. I’ll try that.

        1. My pleasure.

  17. Yeah, as far as I’m concerned, Blaze is just a big scam by wordpress. One more way for them to take peoples’ money without delivering any of the goods.

Very glad you didn’t have to actually spend your own money to find this out!

    1. Yup, I think so too. I definitely wouldn’t have wasted my own $50 for it lol. Not worth my hard earned money.

  18. Thanks for checking this out, Pooja… very helpful…

    1. Happy to do so.

  19. Pooja my dear. You’re the sweetest. I’ve been wondering about WP Blaze too. So thanks for trying it out and telling me about your findings. You’re precious. I will definitely wait on that.

Grateful for you. Be well. Blessings.

    1. Happy to share the information. Yeah, until they figure out how to turn impressions into views/clicks I would recommend not using Blaze.

      Thanks and be well too.

  20. Pooja, thank you for this insight, I had suspected that Blaze was a fail for most folks and I was right. Not worth it. It seems that whatever WP does they just muck it up!

    1. I’m happy to hare my honest experience. I agree, WP hasn’t made any good new features in a while. I think it’s because they’re so focused on profits and not giving their users a good experience.

      1. Yes, profits from the big companies they host, huge corporations. We bloggers don’t mean much to them.

        1. Yup, it’s a sad reality of where the world is at. All these big platforms are the same ☹️

          1. 😡😔😔

  21. Hey Pooja. It’s Thanksgiving day here in the states. So thankful for friends like U. Have a wonderful day, hon 🙂

    1. Thankful for you too, have a great Thanksgiving 🙂

  22. I was hoping someone real would do this. Not the standard affiliate marketing websites.
I was curious on its effectiveness as well.
I’m the end WordPress works best when interacting with others. But there I haven’t found a better way to do that aside from being a human, liking and commenting.
Thank you again for a really great post.

    1. Yeah, a lot of people had been asking me if Blaze was worth it so I took this opportunity to try it out.
Yes, I think interacting and SEO are the best ways to increase traffic.
      Thanks for reading.

  23. I agree…. I wasn’t impressed by it either

    1. Yeah, it’s quite disappointing.

  24. That is very good to know. I’m sorry it didn’t get you actual visitors and more click throughs. Still, it was interesting to see how it actually worked. Maybe it’s not worth investing in after all.

    1. Yes, I was interested to see the final results and now I know it’s not really worth it.

  25. Thank you, I thought this would be the case!

    1. You thought correctly, it was pretty disappointing!

      1. Wow, what a scam! They have to do better about helping us promote.

  26. i never heard of it but thanks for sharing your review! I only trust you when it comes to advice from bloggers these days lol

    1. Happy to do that, I wanted to share the actual results so people can see for themselves and decide if it’s worth it or not. In my opinion, definitely not worth it. Lol, thanks.

  27. Pooja, thank you for sharing your experience with Blaze. It doesn’t seem like a good deal to me. I feel the more “stuff” added by WordPress, the greater the chance for glitches.

    1. I totally agree, every single time something new is introduced something else glitches which is so frustrating. I don’t see the point of fixing things when they aren’t broken.

      1. I switched Moonwashed to the Business plan. It seems to be running smoother.

        1. Oh good, glad to hear that.

  28. Thanks for sharing your experience and analysis, Pooja! You sure know a lot about this stuff!!

    1. Thanks, after almost a decade here I’ve picked up some stuff 😉

  29. Thanks for trying it and saving me some time!

    1. Happy to do so!

  30. I did try Blaze and like you was not impressed with the results. I ended up paying about $.70 per actual hit and cot 0 comments so I have no idea what those hits meant. Maybe better stats would help so I could target it better but either way I’m not using it again. 🤣🙃😎

    1. Yeah, it gives more impressions than actual clicks, likes and comments. I would recommend making posts SEO friendly, interacting, advertising privately and guest posting/collabs to get backlinks. Those work much better.

  31. Spot on assessment, especially in relation to the severe decline in views when Blaze was introduced. My new blog was gradually increasing views then stagnated when Blaze appeared.

I also tried Blaze and experienced some extremely underwhelming results. It feels like a scam.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, a lot of blogs experienced a decrease when Blaze was introduced and it does feel a bit like a scam.

A & J PEI Treasures/E Jean Simpson, BEd, BA, MA

    Good to know!

  33. I have not used Blaze because I feel it is a ripoff to charge someone who already has paid for their blog domain through WP for help promoting their posts.

    1. I agree, I think Blaze is kind of a scam to make us pay extra for what they should already be doing for those on paid plans.

  34. Great thanks

    1. My pleasure.

  35. Yeah, I noticed that my engagement really did go down after Blaze was introduced. It sucks for real

    1. Yeah, it sucks so much that they did that to users.

  36. I think people are better off using Facebook and Instagram ads

    1. Yup, totally agree.

  37. When I first started blogging someone with a lot of followers followed me. He had a pay me this amount and I will share your post and you will have a lot of views thing. I am thinking he had over 10,000 at the time. I think it got me 25 views. I’m skeptical of anything on WP that claims you will get more traffic for money. They don’t deal with real issues they have like the app kicking you off most of the time.

    1. Yes, you have to be so careful with these things. And honestly, I’ve seen way more results just by making posts and my overall site more SEO friendly which is free.

      1. I recently got suggestions after my last posts of key words to add to it from WP. I tried adding two of them. I don’t think it made a difference.

        1. Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I think the thing with keywords is that you need to have a large amount of them before Search Engines pick them up because out of a hundred you’ll rank for maybe a handful of keywords.

          1. Yet I have heard WP says stick to 10-12 at most or it will hurt your post.

            1. I think that’s tags. You’re supposed to have 10-12 tags per post. With keywords/key phrases you only want to use one per post.

              1. Where are key words or phrases added in? I obviously don’t know a lot. I though they were tags.

                1. That’s okay, SEO is complicated and most people don’t know much about it. A keyword or key phrase is generally added throughout the post as well as in the title and to the alt text of images on the post. I think this will help you better understand what keywords/phrases are and how to utilise them: https://www.semrush.com/blog/what-are-keywords-simple-keyword-definition/

  38. Hi Pooja, Alex from Blaze here! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with Blaze. We’re sorry that the test didn’t meet your expectations. We’re also glad to get your feedback, because we’re constantly working on ways for Blaze to work better. We are working to improve Blaze so that more bloggers can get lots of value out of it. We understand that you would like more clicks over impressions and we’re looking at ways to do that.

I also noticed a few ways you could improve your results with Blaze in its current version. I’d be happy to get in touch directly if you would like to optimize your campaign a bit.

It looks like your campaign achieved a $1 CPM or Cost Per Mille which is considered pretty affordable in the advertising world. On other platforms an $8-10 CPM is common. However, we understand that many bloggers would prefer to purchase ads on a CPC or Cost Per Click basis instead. Your feedback here is definitely helpful.

I also want to address the idea that we’ve caused blogs’ traffic to decline as a way to get people to use Blaze. This is definitely not the case. We want our users to succeed, and we would never restrict traffic. WordPress.com provides powerful tools to grow your audience, but unlike social platforms like Facebook or Tiktok, we don’t control your traffic or audience. You have full control of how you promote your site. We respect the effort it takes to gather an audience, and we are working to build Blaze into another useful tool to support that.

    1. Hey Alex, thanks so much for commenting and for your explanation. I also appreciate you offering to help but I don’t think advertising my content is something I’m currently working on but I will reach out if that ever changes. And I’m glad my experience was helpful to you, I hope it helps to improve Blaze because like you said many bloggers would prefer Cost Per Click instead of CPM.

I appreciate you clearing that up although I do remember a time when WordPress did attempt to decrease traffic for users on certain plans: https://wptavern.com/wordpress-com-makes-major-unannounced-pricing-changes-slashes-free-storage-limits

  39. Informative and useful Blog.

    1. Thanks so much.

  40. Hi! I ended up here organically (I think) because you liked one of my posts and I got the notification which, of course, piqued my curiosity. I had no idea what Blaze was (now I do, sort of) so I simply picked one of the posts linked in the notification.
Interestingly, after writing a post that was super critical of google where I also linked to all kinds of anti-official state narrative content, I discovered that it was impossible to find my blog through Google. Quite literally impossible, even when I copy-pasted a sentence from the offending blog post and put it in “quotes,” the search still yielded nothing. I couldn’t effing believe it. How petty. How bullyish. Thankfully, I write for the love of ranting. I don’t know how to monetize or promote my blog. The blog is not as hard to find now but Google still has no love for me and it’s mutual. I can’t believe I used to enjoy using it years ago. I hardly recognize the garbage it has turned into. Lies and censorship and reshaping of reality.
In any case, it seems like the old fashioned ways of connecting still kind of work. But it’s getting harder to find human-generated content and the lack of warmth is evident.
I so miss the old web, when more random blogs appeared in searches. That’s incredibly rare now, for every search I make on google (the search engine of the beast system and nobody’s friend) I get mostly “official” websites which I don’t care about nor trust. Much writing about nothing and not a single random Joe’s Blog Corner in the lot. Search started to go downhill with personalization, when suddenly you’d find yourself in a filter bubble (a condition that’s not easy to diagnose).
I dusted off an old article yesterday and reread it, perhaps you’ll find it worth your time as well, as it is somewhat relevant to the subject at hand: https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2017/03/how-the-like-button-ruined-the-internet/519795/

    1. Oh good, I much prefer organic traffic. I’m sorry to hear that this happened to you with Google but I’m not surprised as most large platforms shadowban content creators that criticise them. And it definitely sounds like you might be shadow banned.

Yeah, blogging was much more fun back then and it was so much easier to get Search Engine views without being extremely SEO friendly. A lot of times making your posts SEO friendly makes them lose their unique appeal.

I’ll definitely check out the article, thanks so much for sharing it.

  41. Thanks for sharing, Pooja. I thought about trying Blaze but will hold off for now. Great information.

    1. My pleasure. Yeah, I would recommend other methods such as working with people who will privately advertise your blog, better your SEO and use trending tags. They work better than Blaze.

  42. I’ve just been running a short Blaze campaign to see if I had a similar outcome… and I too had a CTR of just .25%

    Very disappointing results!

    1. Definitely very disappointing. Out of all the Ads I’ve tried, these are the worst results I’ve gotten. Hopefully, they can improve it in the future.

  43. I was thinking of trying out Blaze for a day at $5 but now I won’t. I shall try other things to make people want to read and subscribe to my blog instead. Thank you for this post, very useful!

    1. Yeah, organic methods actually tend to work better. My pleasure, glad this helped!

  44. This is was so helpful! I was curious about how well it actually worked, thanks for sharing your results!!

    1. Glad to hear that, happy to share!

  46. Read your article, and sorry I think your approach is wrong, IMO you are not paying for impression but for clicks. It is the exact same as if you were using PPC like Adsense, Bing etc.
Like them, your account only get deducted when someone clicks on your ad. IMO Blaze did not try to re-invent de wheel, their management said something like *hey we can offer something similar to the big one and make a profit in the process*
Just like Adsense and all the other ones, , I would recomend run the same article with the same budget and a totally different title. And then share with us your stats.

    1. I don’t think Blaze is anything like Adsense. Although I haven’t used it myself, a couple of my clients use it and I have seen a large amount of clicks and views coming in from it for a very similar budget.

I did not pay for clicks, I payed to have my ad running for 10 days. The amount you pay is fixed, even if I had gotten more or less clicks, I would have paid that exact amount. And if it was per click (which it wasn’t) paying $50 for a little over 100 views is absolutely ridiculous.

I will not be running any ads on Blaze again because it’s not in my budget. As I mentioned, I was gifted the $50 which I used. I did try to change the title multiple times before running the ad but wasn’t able to due to some glitch. It didn’t work for a few days so I gave up and shared the ad as it is.

  47. I should have read this first… in the middle of a $30 campaign. I have gotten 2 clicks… my logic for using Blaze was that, like you say, in the past I have gotten some nice traffic from WordPress, so I thought, this is an organic audience I would like to cultivate. With my limited budget I will look instead to improve my seo in general. Thanks!

    1. Yeah, pretty much what you’re paying for is impressions not clicks. IMO, they need to charge per click/view not per impression. It’s crazy to charge someone so much money and they end up with a handful of views.
Exactly, focus on SEO instead and you can at the least get a few thousand views from Search Engines a month once they start crawling your posts. It may take a few months to see the difference and see more Search Engine views coming in but once your posts start getting indexed you’ll see a big increase in traffic. It’s much more worth it in the long run.

      1. Hello Pooja. Thanks for the informative article on advertising with blazing. How does it fair with Google Ads and Pinterest? I am trying on blaze for this blog post https://shopps.shop/ultimate-guide-to-choosing-the-perfect-baby-carrier/ to see if targeted approach would increase click-through rate.

I have chosen “English” and targeting only parenting and babies category only, in the United States. I’ll update you on how it fairs.

Thanks once again for sharing your experience with Blaze Advertising.

        1. Thanks so much. From what I’ve seen Google Ads are very worth it. Not sure about Pinterest.

My pleasure and please do keep me updated about your experience.

  48. I recently came across very interesting experience; The first time I tried blaze it gave an estimated expressions of 2.5k to 3.4k per day per $5, which is 25k to 34k per day per $50 .

Then a week or so later, on a different website, https:/medicalforbetter.com, it gave me 92k – 115k per day per $50 for this post, which was three times than the previous one.

A week ago i was promoting my e-commerce site and for some strange reason, it gave me 245k to 345k per day per 50k dollars for this post, https//shopps.shop/blog/, which is 10 times more than the normal. I guess it was a system hitch and the good thing is, once blaze allocates the impressions, that will always be your rate for any subsequent ads. So I decided to go all in at 50 usd per day for 28 days!

Here’s the screenshot for the latest campaign https://enpesa.com/blaze

    1. That’s very interesting, thanks for letting me know about your results and sharing your experience. However, my biggest issue is that the impressions are not turning into actual views and that can be seen in your results too. 0.19% click-through rate is crazy when spending over a thousand dollars. You can do SO much better with Google Ads, I’ve personally seen much better results with multiple other ads on Google and social media for much less.

  49. I tried for a week and it’s the worst advertising “opportunity” that I have ever seen. I got maybe 20 visits from various blogs and I clicked on each one of them to see where they were coming from. Every single one of them had been abandoned over 4 years ago and one even belonged to a dead person! Amazing that anyone was even visiting these blogs and clicked on my ad…

I run an artist’s co-op and all of the clicks were from creative blogs, so at least we were matched in this way. But, imagine if they had shown my ads to blogs that are active today? It might have brought in some good traffic….

    1. That’s so disappointing, as you can see my results were disappointing too. A number of the views I got were from abandoned blogs too. A couple of them were empty, like no content on them whatsoever.

Had they done a better job with it you could have gotten so much more traffic and followers. I would personally recommend Google Ads or Ads on social media because I’ve seen much better results with those. They know how to market the content to the right audience.

  50. […] Obviously, I would never use my own money for Blaze and certainly not $50. But since I had the credits anyway, I decided to give Blaze another try. I had tried it earlier as I had gotten credits back then too and was disappointed by the results. I wanted to see if this time would be any different. You can read about my last experience with Blaze here. […]
