Laugh Lines And Aging: What Really Grinds My Gears

What Really Grinds My Gears

Welcome back to another “What Really Grinds My Gears” post, it’s that time again where I whine about anything and everything. Because at the end, this is LifesfineWHINE. And if you don’t like it, there’s like a million other less whiny bloggers out there… Today, I will be whining about laugh lines and aging.

Laugh Lines And Aging

One thing I keep seeing on social media is how much aging is frowned upon by society. Even though aging is such a natural process and everyone experiences it. And I hate to say it but it’s a thousand times worse for women. Every fine line on your face is scrutinised. You’re seen as old if you don’t have the skin, hair and nails of a newborn.

And it’s pretty much just to push some stupid, unnecessary product in your face to “fix” problems that aren’t even actual problems. I see kids as young as 18 getting baby botox which is just crazy. And the saddest one is people not laughing and smiling because they’re afraid of getting laugh lines. Is line free skin really worth sacrificing our happiness?

This is the sad reality of where we’re at as a society. Aging is seen as almost a social crime even when it’s so incredibly natural and something we don’t have control over. Just so companies can sell us products we don’t even need. And the sad thing is that it’s working. I mean, I do some things to keep my skin looking young too. I’m not crazy about it but I still ice, Gua Sha and use a few different products. And I hate seeing the lines on my face even when I know it’s natural. So, this is really not criticising anyone. Like I said, it’s just me whining about stuff.

Conclusion

I guess, in conclusion, I just want to say that we need to remember that it’s okay to age. And that no one is perfect as much as they try to make it seem like they are. We all have flaws and that’s totally okay.

  1. Agree. “I guess, in conclusion, I just want to say that we need to remember that it’s okay to age. And that no one is perfect as much as they try to make it seem like they are. We all have flaws and that’s totally okay.”

    1. Thank you, so glad you agree.

  2. I’ve been thinking about this a lot…I never really thought getting old(er) would bother me….I’m never going to colour my hair or use any special products…I’ll be jeans and t-shirts no matter the age….I have no idea how to act my age…..but, as a huge number is staring me in the face, that thing about more time behind me than ahead, and I only have so many days ahead…if I live to 100, that would be only 12,775 days…23,725 days behind me….the math isn’t good….looking at my 90 year old parents who have come to terms with their life expectancy…I’m thinking, how do I make those 12,775 days count?

    1. You do you, don’t feel pressured to colour your hair or change yourself in any way. Aging is such a natural process. We need to focus on living, not on freezing time.

  3. Hey, You are spot on! Congrats on reaching… 24k followers I think it was? I meant to congratulate You on the day and I got distracted, so congratulations, that epic! Many continued blessings, aging adds character, tells the story of who You really are. If One doesn’t have enogh laugh lines when they are old, they didn’t laugh and Love enough when they were young. 😉

    1. Thanks so much! I agree, those lines are proof of a life well lived 😊

  4. 🙂 First of all, it is possible to age gracefully. For example, there are people in their fifties who look like they are in their thirties.

Anyway, Asians do not mind getting old and the elders within their society are revered.

Sadly, the Western beauty standards on social media are skewed.

    1. I agree, it’s a lot more of a western beauty standard thing. Absolutely, people can age gracefully and yes you’ll change but it’s not a bad thing. It’s okay to change physically as we age.

  5. I’ve been breaking my head over this! Like, smiling and laughing is an issue now? I’d rather be lined all over if it means I was happy.

    1. I know, it’s so crazy that people have stopped moving their face to stop lines from forming…

      1. Couldn’t be me, though, with my frowns and squinting in ✨nearsighted✨

        1. Same, I’ve had frown lines since my early twenties 😆

          1. HAHA but the thing is, when I take off my glasses, I can’t even see myself in the mirror, so – what lines?😅

            1. Yup, can’t see nothing squinting without glasses 😅

              1. 😅😅

  6. I like the balanced, realistic and even vulnerable way you write about this. Even admitting you’re just whining – which is of course amazingly appropriate and “on the nose”. Touché!

    1. Thanks so much! As you know, I always try to keep it real with my readers including when I’m whining lol.

  7. You said – Is line free skin really worth sacrificing our happiness? I say no! This is another reason why I despise social media at times. Ladies, you are beautiful just the way you are. 🥰😊

    1. Yup, I agree. Even as we get older we’re still beautiful and it doesn’t take away from our value as a human being 😊

      1. That’s right! 🤙🏻☺️

  8. I see my lines with so much pride and honor. I never thought I’d make it to my 30s let alone watching the greys and lines come in my 40s. It’s cool, it’s more tiger stripes like my stretch marks from giving birth. A life lived hard, laughed lots, with plenty of smiles and tears. I like it. I’ve seen visions of me as an old woman covered in tattoos with crazy grey hair with my grand babies. I’m old and wrinkly and full of stories. I’m in no rush to meet her, yet I’m excited to get there all the same 💚

Society can tell its lies, but I see life in the wrinkles around our eyes. 💚

    1. I love the way you look at aging and is how I’m trying to see it too. I think those lines are a reminder of good memories. And I hope to be an old woman with tattoos and piercings too lol. 💕

  9. ageing shouldnt be frowned upon! It happens to us all! xoxo

    1. Agreed, it’s such a natural part of life!

  10. The world of social media has everyone in denial, mostly.

    1. Yup, it’s just so toxic on social media sometimes.

  11. So true , aging is a natural part of life, and embracing it shouldn’t come at the expense of our joy and contentment.

    1. Exactly, it’s totally natural and it doesn’t make you less valuable to society when you age.

  12. I think the resistance to aging has been happening since people first emerged and reached a certain level of leisure. The Pharaohs even tried to look good after death. I say if you can afford it and that is your thing, go for it. Personally, I think the money might be better spent feeding those that can’t afford a meal.

    1. I’m with you, if people can afford it that’s fine. But I think the issue I have is when people are pressured to go through certain procedures due to what they see on social media or on media in general. A lot of people end up regretting it over time. And yes, that money could probably be spent in better ways.

  13. I never even heard of gua sha and I didn’t know that 18 year olds are getting Botox. I am working really hard at making friends w the aging process. It’s not easy but I think in the long run it’s better than fighting it. I’m not giving up laughing at any cost! 😅Thanks for your thought-provoking piece.

    1. Gua Sha is actually great, it helps your skin and body a lot. Yeah, really young people are getting baby botox which I find so sad and unnecessary. Thanks so much, keep laughing- it makes life worth living 😊

      1. Yes, looked it up or maybe you had a link to it. I may check it out sometime.

        1. Yeah, I linked it. You should definitely try it, it’s actually very fun and makes your skin feel really soft.

  14. For me, ageing is one of the pious tradition the Almighty has set for all the living creatures to follow… So, we just following that. Ain’t we. 😊

    1. Totally, it’s natural and we all age. Nothing wrong with that 😊

  15. “I deeply empathize with your post about societal pressures on women. It’s heartbreaking to see individuals feeling confined by these expectations 🌸💔 . Your post brilliantly captures the absurdity of society’s obsession with perfection. Embracing the quirks, wrinkles, and makeup mishaps is a rebellious dance to the rhythm of authenticity. Keep rocking that genuine glow, and remember, a smile is the best makeup any of us can wear! 😄💄 #FlawlesslyFlawed”

    1. Absolutely, I think a lot of women don’t want to get procedures but are pressured into it because they’re shamed for aging naturally. It’s really sad. No one is perfect and no one should be shamed for such a natural process. #FlawlesslyFlawed is correct 😊

  16. We’ve a beauty saloon at the end of my road; I went in for an estimate!

    1. Not worth it, lol!

  17. no one is allowed to age gracefully anymore. lol. I don’t mind the lines and greys. Its the old bones that crackle and pop getting out of bed. And if I sneeze too hard, I can blow my back out. Thats the worst part about aging. but yeah… not a fan of the fear, shame and guilt culture which surrounds aging.

    1. Urghh yeah, people are so weird about aging these days. Lol, I had some random back pain the other day that made me feel real old 😅

      1. 😂😂 they become more frequent the older you get it seems

        1. Not looking forward to that 🥹

  18. Yep, social media has made this a “thing”. I wish people would realize how fake most pictures and videos on social sites are. They are setup, they are not real, not by a mile. Sadly, most people seem to judge their own lives in comparison to other people instead of an actual objective standard. And when you are trying to compare yourself to fake pictures of people with the time and money to do all that fakery, well, you’ll never win.

Which is why I quit facebook almost a decade ago, never started Twitter and only use wordpress as a “social” online site. I also don’t post pictures of me or Mrs B where you can see details about us.

    1. Totally and even if those pictures aren’t exactly fake they are taken with specific lighting, makeup etc. What we see on social media is not what is reality.

  19. Yes, aging is natural, but also keeping yourself healthy isn’t bad. I mean, if we are just taking care to look better, I think that’s fine.
It’s no crime to take care of yourself. I know aging is natural, but that doesn’t mean I will sit and let it come, haha.

Honestly, I don’t feel 30 at all. I don’t know how 30 feels, But I’ve seen some guys who are become a little slow with this age. Their body becomes a bit mature. I feel my body’s age is 24ish.

I love such whining post, this is what I wait for.

A personal qs: Do you use make up in all those pics?

    1. You’re a 30 year old. That’s not middle age. There are going to be some people that are getting raggedy but you’ll understand aging when you reach 50+. Thirty is one of the better ages.

      1. I am 30
But I feel and look 25, so I’m good.
Im sticking to eating healthy and doing regular workout. That is keeping me away from any early signs of aging.

    2. 30 is very young, Devang. Even more so if you feel 24.

      1. I’m young!
Who’s spreading rumours about me being old? 😛

    3. True, and honestly I totally support people getting procedures done as long as it’s for themselves. As long as people are doing it for themselves and not because they are shamed for aging.
Yeah, some people fall apart early and start aging early. To avoid that, living a healthy life is a good idea.

      Haha thanks.

Yup, I think in most pictures I have makeup on although I keep it minimal because I don’t have the skills required to do a full face of makeup 😅

      1. Staying fit and active is best.
As I say, we need to build a healthy foundation at an early age itself.
Your age is perfect for healthy choices.

Speaking of age, I wonder how your whinning will be after 20+ years. I’ll be around to see it 😛

You look very pretty with or without makeup 😍 👸🏻

        1. Trust me, I’ll still be the same whining 24/7 no matter what age I’m at 🤭

Thanks, that’s the only compliment I accept when it comes to makeup 😅

          1. I hope that remains!!
            I want to see evolution

Genuine compliment. However, that huge ass glasses hides the majority of face 🙁

            1. Lol, that’s why I wear huge ass glasses 😅

  20. aka double standard no sugar coating it either.

    1. The world is filled with double standards 🤷🏻‍♀️

      1. correct. that was a gender thaing poojer. kinda like how you feel about werd prezz

        1. Yup, lots of double standards depending on gender.

  21. It’s not just social media. Unfortunately Western culture has come to us all where we get scared we will get treated differently if we aren’t able bodied and beautiful human beings.

I’m glad you’re trying to at least say something about it and write about how it affects you.

I just don’t understand it, but I know my culture likes em young, beautiful, fertile, and able bodied and if you aren’t that, nobody cares unless they are someone who chooses to care.

    1. Yeah, it’s like getting older is a crime. And people who are older are treated really badly sometimes. True, if you’re not young, able bodies and beautiful it’s like society assumes you’re worth less.

Thanks, it’s something I’ve been noticing. And now that I have a few greys coming in I’m starting to experience some of this stuff.

  22. Love the post and totally agree that it isn’t fair for women to have to do so much to be accepted. I was never really bothered by all of that as I find it all so expensive and have found other things more important to spend my money on…I use baby lotion as a moistourizer for many years! Besides, for the past 33 years I have been covered in scars on my face, hands, arms, and legs and there is nothing I could do about them other than acccept them and learn how to be comfortable in my own skin. I managed to find a great husband, who loves me as I am, so it goes to show all that stuff isn’t as important as it seems to be!

    1. Thanks so much. That’s great, I agree there are so many better things you can spend that money on rather than procedures and products that promise to reverse aging. I think we’re all beautiful as we are. And I’m glad your husband loves you for you.

  23. NICE POST ❤️💚💙

    Blessed and Happy day 🌞

    Greetings 👋🇪🇦

    1. Thanks so much 😊

  24. Baby botox? That is sad. Laugh lines mean you laugh. Aging means you’re human. I hear there are societies of people who respect the elders, even to go to them for advice and companionshp and such. I think unlined faces even among the young (and from then on) look odd. Who’s in there? We can’t tell. We should care for our skin, of course. But we can wear our accomplishments as well. Thanks for your insights on this. Good whining.

    1. Yup, super sad. Absolutely, it’s important to care for our skin but it’s best not to go overboard. I keep seeing these ads and stuff for products/procedures that promise to stop aging (most of which don’t work) and people spend hundreds and often thousands on them. It’s really sad.

  25. Ageing is a natural process and we should take it in our stride. I use a vitamin C product on my face to keep my skin moisterized which I’ve used for years. Beauty is only skin deep and it’s one’s inner beauty that matters.

    1. Exactly, we all age and that’s okay. Vitamin C and E are both great for skin. I think some products are good but spending thousands (as many people unfortunately do) is really unnecessary. Agreed, your inner beauty matters the most.

    Good points!

  27. The essential problem is one of focus. People who are focused on those around them probably don’t mind aging as much, but as a society we tend to be really self-centered. If you only care about yourself aging will be a big deal. The emphasis we put on these things is a reflection of our priorities.

    1. That’s really true. I think as humans we’re just so self-absorbed and focus much more on our flaws.

  28. So true and I love your stance!

    1. Thanks so much!

  29. Whether we accept it or not, we will grow old and we can’t control it.

    1. Exactly, everyone ages. It’s a part of life.

  30. I’ve noticed something about social media recently. It’s younger people (under 40) who fuss about “old people” and how old they look, putting pressure on them to look younger with more skincare products. “Older” people (over 40) may invest in skincare, but they also don’t think they are that old and get tired of the pressure to look young even though they’ve been ageing like fine wine on the inside.

    1. That is SO true. I think a lot of older people buy expensive products or do expensive procedures to slow down aging because they’re pressured to not because they want to. And younger generations are definitely more obsessed with aging. I’ve noticed they buy a lot of anti-aging products that they don’t even need at their age. And shame older people for looking their age.

      1. Yes, the pressure is horrific to look younger.

  31. Aging is a natural thing that people spend their energy and money to avoid. I personally am at the age where gray hair and wrinkles are showing. I’ve decided to color the hair but that’s it. For now I’m accepting the face with wrinkles and laugh lines as a reminder I have lived.

    1. Absolutely, I think those lines just mean your lived life and made memories. It’s not a bad thing at all. I have a couple of greys too and I’m honestly okay with it for now.

  32. I am older than I was yesterday, it’s not a secret and even if I use all the Botox I can I will still be older, seriously people, who are we trying to fool here? With time Botox looks uglier and uglier, LoL which I can reach by doing nothing and get there naturally, haha

    1. Sometimes people actually end up messing up their face with stuff like Botox and plastic surgery and may have actually looked better had they aged naturally 😞

      1. I agree a hundred percent

  33. Ageing has its compensations. When the wrinkles get to be deep enough you no longer have to carry a purse, You can store all our stuff in the wrinkles.

    1. Lol, that’s a great way of thinking of it.

  34. Even people are stopping to laugh 🤐

    1. Yup, it would be funny if it weren’t so sad… 😕

  35. Great post, Pooja! A very good rant on a serious social ill that I think is devastating for women’s sense of self. I find it very refreshing to see a female celebrity who has rejected the notion of getting work done to keep her face youthful, when on the opposite end of the spectrum, men are celebrated for the craggy look of mature skin. Aging gracefully does not mean hiding one’s age.

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah, it’s so sad how social media is seriously damaging the self-esteem of so many young girls and women and making them spend thousands on things they don’t need. True, as men age they’re called silver foxes but when women age they’re shamed for it. Exactly, aging gracefully means letting your body age as you do.

  36. We could also choose the alternative to aging, not as pleasant as life though 🤣.

  37. i notice i will fall into that mindset of “omg i gotta look pretty all the time i need skincare fitness and money to maybe get something fixed” like aghh its horrible! it just sucks me in sometimes.. i save a bunch of videos of things to do to stay “young looking” and then i will snap out of it and roll my eyes whenever i come across a video that mentions something like botox lip filler bbl etc. like its absolutely horrible how sad and ugly some people look after all the plastic is injected into their body. i remember kids not caring so much how we looked, we were just kids, but now the teens these days geez, they have a full face of makeup which makes them look older than they are, that also kind of saddens me. so yeah. it really grinds my gears too lol!

    1. I know what you mean, it’s a messed up cycle. Yeah, back in the day kids were just kids and now they care so much about looks. Even young teens wear a ton of makeup

  38. I know what I am going to tell you here will be something unusual on this topic and many people cannot relate to it.
I look 10 years younger than my actual age and yet I am not happy. I don’t find this as a phenomena bcoz all my dance friends are like this. It has got a lot to do with good blood circulation throughout the body when dancing or exercising.
What I don’t like is people treating me as immature or too young a person to understand things. When I help my aged mother with property paperwork and bills, I had a hard time convincing government officials that I can handle things. It’s so frustrating!
At that point, no one thinks of wrinkles or hair loss, all you want is to help your loved ones transition through life smoothly.
I guess reading your rant, I started whining. Lol!

    1. Lol, always feel free to whine here. I understand your predicament, I get mistaken for a high schooler sometimes and it can be frustrating. I keep having to show my ID to prove I’m an adult and it’s annoying. But at the same time I also feel pressured to make sure my skin doesn’t age and that sucks.

  39. It’s not just botox either, it’s people from other countries being influenced into thinking Western beauty standards are more important than their own. I do think the bottom line is this obsession with youth is rooted in our fear of dying

    1. Yup, that’s a huge part of it. I agree, it’s the fear of dying as well as wanting control over things we don’t actually have control over.

      1. True. Living in California, people are a LITTLE too health obsessed, especially in LA. It can really grate on you

        1. Yeah, I’ve heard that about California and it’s true too much of a good thing is still a bad thing.

      2. I actually have some funny stories about Californians being a LITTLE too health obsessed. Feel free to DM me on IG about them!

        1. Lol, will do!

  40. I agree. Aging is natural and it is something we all are going to experience if we live long enough. There’s no reason to put chemicals in your skin to tighten it when it’s only a temporary fix and more money being wasted to keep it up. I think aging is beautiful because you get to see yourself change slowly. Who knows what’s in those chemicals that could harm you in the long run? No one is perfect on the inside, or on the outside. We are all perfectly imperfect. We should love ourselves just as we are, just the way we were created. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading your article. Have a great week.

    1. I so agree, it’s a natural inevitable process so why try so hard to fight it. True, so many of those chemicals are harmful. Especially invasive surgeries. Thanks and have a great week too.

  41. I agree with you Pooj. Aging is natural and yes we can use some hydrating creams to help our skin but it bugs me when people have facelifts and such. Most of the time a person doesn’t look right after a face lift so why do it? People need to feel good in their own skin and take age gracefully. I don’t have a perfect face at all but it is what it is.

    1. True, a lot of people who get invasive surgeries end up looking odd after instead of younger. And I don’t like how women in particular are ostracised for aging.

  42. OMG i think I just got triple with all the baby faces i’m making with smiles and all. bring em on,.., lol, 💕

    1. Lol, it just means you’re making good memories! 💕

      1. And there you have it-:)
        💕

  43. I always tell people that I’m happy getting older because I’m finally aging into my personality.

I suspect that there are some geriatric American politicians whose faces make a sloshing sound when they shake their heads b/c they’ve injected so much filler. The anti-aging thing is way out of hand.

    1. Same here, my sister always jokes that I have the personality of a middle aged person so I’m happy that my personality and age will finally match lol.

I feel like the anti-aging thing is more common in the west since not a lot of people get work done here.

      1. Lol. Yeah, I’ve been told since I was a child that I have the personality of an old man.

That’s definitely my impression, though I have not traveled much in a long while. A lot of the anti-aging culture in the west is driven by big corporate interests who work hard to convince people to spend their money on those things. There may not be as much of that in the rest of the world.

        1. I’ve noticed that anti-aging stuff is big in Asia too but not much in Africa at least not in East Africa. I’ve been to a lot of the countries here and most people are fine with aging naturally and don’t have such a negative attitude about aging. When I was living in Canada, I noticed that people were so concerned about how they look. Almost fixated on it.
