Are You Making These Blogging Mistakes & Is It Killing Your Blog?

Blogging Mistakes You Should Avoid

Blogging Mistakes

Usually, when I write these blogging advice posts I tell you what to do to grow your blog. But today, I thought I would change things up a little bit. Today, I’ll be telling you exactly what not to do if you want to increase growth on your blog. Don’t worry, most of these mistakes are pretty easy to identify and avoid. So, without further ado, here are some blogging mistakes you should avoid:

Not Being Active

Not being active is the biggest mistake I see bloggers make. Lots of people expect to get views and follows as soon as they start posting but it’s not that simple. In fact, there is so much more to blogging that people don’t realise. It takes work and time to grow your blog.

If you’re looking to grow your blog, you need to be as active on this platform as possible. Go over to other blogs, leave meaningful comments and interact as much as possible. That will bring interaction to your blog. It is genuinely the best way to grow organically.

If you just sit there and expect people to find your blog out of the blue, that’s just not going to happen. There are thousands of bloggers here and it’s hard to find one blog out of all of them. So get yourself out there and make a name on this platform.

Not Responding To Comments

Not responding to comments is another very big blogging mistake that you should try to avoid as much as possible. When it comes to WordPress, this is a very social platform. Comments are a vital aspect of this platform and people here take comments quite seriously.

If someone takes the time to leave comments on your post or posts, you should do them the curtesy of replying. If will encourage readers to come back because they’ll feel heard and seen. And also, because bloggers here are quite friendly and enjoy chatting so if they like talking to you they’ll come back. Trust me on this, I get a lot of comments on my posts and the reason for that is because I’m very responsive. I don’t always posts things every reader will enjoy but a lot of bloggers come back simply because I enjoy chatting with them and they do too.

Spamming Other Bloggers

This a big no. Spamming other bloggers will pretty much get you blacklisted on this platform. People don’t like it when you spam them with a million likes in under a minute or if you leave “please follow me” comments on their site. There are multiple types of spamming including spam bots. But the most common ones that genuine bloggers that aren’t bots or AI use is spam liking and spam commenting. Neither of which are a good idea.

People often think that when they spam others they will grow their blog. But the truth is that you will end up doing more harm than good. Spam is a seriously issue on most platforms and people generally just find it  really annoying. If you want to get traffic to your blog, just leave actual genuine likes and comments. That will get you a long way rather than spamming people.

Being An Eggplant Emoji

You know what I mean when I say this. Some people can be extra awful and WordPress is no exception. Thankfully, people here are lovely for the most part. But there are the occasional haters and trolls. And if you’re going to be one of them, people are going to avoid your blog. And trust me, word spreads about stuff like that since it’s so rare here.

If you disagree with someone, just move on. You don’t have to be a hater. I’ve had people leave very hateful comments under my posts and although I generally delete them, they still hurt. And I most definitely block those bloggers because I don’t want to deal with that negativity. So, don’t be hateful. Remember how important it is to be kind and loving. And if you disagree, simply move on.

Conclusion

So, that is my advice for now on what not to do. These are all blogging mistakes you should be avoiding as they will hinder growth.

Do you agree with my list? What are some blogging mistakes you think should be avoided? Let me know in the comments below because I would absolutely love to hear from you. Or simply stop by and say hi!

Solid guidance! I didn’t start off intending to grow my blog, but the dynamic here, because of the thoughtfulness of real sharers, readers and commenters, has become more and more enjoyable. I felt like I was losing longer form communication for a hot minute there!

    1. Thank you! Same here, when I started blogging it was just supposed to be a short term hobby but it became something more since this platform is so wonderful. True, social media does that. It’s like your concentration gets completely ruined.

  5. I do all of the good stuff you mention, Pooja. 😊

    1. That’s great! 😁

      1. Have a great day! 🤙🏻❤️

        1. You too! ❤️

  6. Great advice, Pooja. Keep up the great work of writing and sharing. Have a great night.

    1. Thanks so much, have a great night too.

  7. Hi,

    How are you?😊

I agree with you. Like I said before, I didn’t plan to grow my blog at the beginning, but I noticed that more and more people are visiting every day( because I post everyday…😅).

So recently, I use more popular keywords and stereotyped images that people have. e.g., seasons→ spring → flower → cherry blossom → Japan → etc…

This way is also used to learn new words and languages.

I don’t want to say my way is good, but I just try now…

    1. Hey, I’m good and hope you are too 😀

Posting daily is a great way to grow your blog. And trending/popular keywords is great too. It helps drive in traffic.

  8. Really good Advice Pooja G. I can’t handle the spanners. Drives me bonkers. I do try to respond and engage as much as time permits. Feels like losing battle most days. Again, great advice. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏

    1. Thanks so much. Urgh yes, spammers annoy most of us and it’s definitely gotten worse these days. 😫

  9. You cracked me up with an eggplant emoji, I agree, this one is probably the best one . Seriously shouldn’t it be obvious? But it’s not for some folks, so thank you for pointing it out Pooja

    1. Lol, glad to hear that. Yes, you would think it would be very obvious but a lot of people on the internet just don’t seem to get it.

  10. Thanks, Pooja. These are good. You mention that you’re responsive and I concur. I don’t know how you do it with all the comments you get. I learn so much from you!

    1. Thanks so much! Being responsive is really important so I try to make as much time as I can to be active. So glad my posts help you!

  11. I think that is very solid advice.

Another thing I react to is when people publish 20-40 posts per day. I am not going to read 20-40 posts from the same person and even if I read one post, I have another 39 to clean out from my email inbox. Unless that person is writing super interesting stuff I will stop following. Other mistakes are writing very political posts or opinionated or strongly biased posts on topics the writer obviously does not understand. The only comment that would be possible for me to leave in that situation is a negative one, so I don’t say anything, but I may stop following depending on the situation. I should say a well informed opiniated post I think is OK, but I really don’t like reading opinionated posts that are just bunk.

    1. Thank you so much.

Oh yes, I generally unfollow sites that post that often because I end up missing other posts because of them. They just take up too much space on the Reader. I agree with you about the political posts especially when they are not well researched or accurate. I’ve unfollowed a number of sites because of that. Especially if they begin sharing very hateful political content.

      1. Yes I totally agree with that

  12. Great advice, Pooja! 💕

    1. Thanks so much! 💕

  13. Solid points one and all. One of the first things I did when I got here was go out and explore what other folks were doing and started interacting. That’s kind of the whole point of this, I thought lol

A lot of bloggers on here never reply to their comments of give a token “thanks” at best. Sometimes that is sufficient, but when someone is trying to engage in a discussion, it doesn’t quite cut it.
It kind of blows my mind, but whatever. The ones that do that to me, I just do it back to, or I unfollow and move on.

    1. Thanks so much. Yup, I think that’s definitely the point of platforms like WordPress. Meeting other people are engaging with content.

True, some bloggers just like the comment but don’t even respond which I think will discourage people from commenting again.

      1. If I get the impression you can’t be bothered reading or responding to my comments after a couple attempts at legit interaction, I usually just unfollow and ditch. There are plenty of people out there more than happy to interact. Better to spend the time with them.

        1. Yup, I’m the same way. I’d rather interact with bloggers that want to interact back.

          1. You know it. 😎👍

  14. All valid and worth keeping in mind. What do you say to those who have periods of inactivity, due to life’s busyness, writer’s block, or other issues?

    1. Thanks so much. Realistically, I completely understand because life gets really busy sometimes and it’s not always possible to be active daily. But when it comes to traffic, SEO etc your blog will suffer if you’re not consistently active and you may end up being unfollowed or lose people that used to comment/like regularly. When it comes to growing your blog, consistency is really a big part of it. In some ways even more so than your content.

  15. Excellent advice

    1. Thanks so much.

  16. Thanks Pooja! Like anything that we build in life, it is a process…one that surely takes time and investment (your time and energy…)…

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, you’re absolutely right. Nothing comes overnight, it takes time and hard work.

  17. Great advice! Love your blogs. Consistency is my goal for 24′. I love blogging, but can get in my fear bag from time to time.

    1. Thanks so much! Consistency is the most important thing when it comes to blogging. At least in my experience. Good luck!

    1. Thanks so much!

  18. Thanks for some great advice. I have been bad for consistency these past couple weeks, but I am free at last after tomorrow and out of excuses, lol.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, it can be hard to post consistently especially when you get busy but it’s important to stay as consistent as possible because in my experience that brings more growth than even having great content.

  19. Golden advice without shaming or belittling! Great points. Thanks, Pooja!
    Stay safe. 🇨🇦

    1. Thanks so much! Stay safe too 😊

  20. Pooja, great tips as always, thanks. The “like 12 posts in <60 sec” is kind of a giveaway 😂

I’d just like to offer one other suggestion/appeal… things these days are so hyper polarized … we get enough political opinions on FB, X, and other SM platforms… I wish that we could keep WP apolitical… nothing like reading a rant from someone whose artistic work you loved before suddenly changed… the people on WP I’ve met are for the large part talented and lovely people… I hope we could shelve our politics in the interest of artistic appreciation 😎

    1. Thanks so much. Haha yeah, that’s just classic spamming.

I so agree with you. I’m so sick of all the politics and hate on social media. It drives people to extremes which is never a good thing. I wish WP could be apolitical too, a place where we can just share content and enjoy ourselves. To be fair, there is less politics here but still quite a bit.

  21. YES agreed on every point you made Pooja! a dozen likes in a matter seconds…ummmm you didn’t read all those THAT quick lol. I mean maybe on my blog because it is just verses but most traditional blogs, nope ya didn’t read it. Another is follows as in follow just to get a follow. I didn’t even know people did that until someone would follow me a dozen times and I realized people do it in the hopes that you follow them back. I used to be more active but am not now but activity and participation are key and crucial. Kind of like in life, you have to be a friend to have a friend or be the friend you want to have type scenerio. Spamming I have just accepted LOL but it isn’t flattering at all. Omgoodness, why do people bother to be an eggplant in the comments section? What a waste of time and energy and it is like spamming…. not a good look. Having said ALL that, I do want to thank you for always being so welcoming. Since day one of my blog you were always present and supportive. It has always been so very much appreciated 🙂 💋

    1. Thanks so much! Lol absolutely, you would still need more than a few seconds to read those many posts I think.
Oh true, a lot of people expect you to follow back but what’s the point of following a site you’ll never revisit. Personally, I also find it annoying when someone follows and then never supports your content. Why follow if you’re never going to read any of my posts.
Truly, if you don’t have anything nice to say you should move on. No reason to be rude on the comments.
I’m always happy to support your posts and thank you so much for supporting mine too 😊

  22. Some great tips here, Pooja. I’ve had some of these examples happen to me, such as someone who follows me and each time I post, that blogger posts a link to their website. I feel like they think my blog a page for free advertising for them.

    1. Thanks so much. Urgh yes, some bloggers do that and it’s so irritating. They really feel like it’s free advertising and honestly it’s a bit rude. It’s like you don’t even read my posts and want to leave links in the comments.

      1. I’m glad this doesn’t just happen to me. I’ve started to block some bloggers who only use my blog comment section as free ad space.

        1. Same here, I block the bots and spammers often because I don’t want to deal with them constantly.

  23. Absolutely agree with you! I definitely see a difference in my stats when I’m not active on my blog! I also saw a huge switch in the number of visits I get when I started putting more useful information in my posts – especially as a travel blogger ahah! Thanks for your always-useful tips!

    1. Thanks so much! Oh absolutely, being active is a big one for growth. And sharing informative posts will definitely do that and get you good numbers.

  24. pretty solid advice. I was actually pleasantly surprised with how friendly wordpress is as a platform . Especially compared to facebook, twitter or instagram. I do feel bad not catching up with everyone as I do follow quite a bit of blogs . I was also suprised how many blogs I would follow that weren’t in my niche , but just hobbies or other interests that I had like anime, gaming, animals, and some really nice slice of life style blogs as well.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, WP is much nicer compared to social media platforms. A lot less hate here. Same, I follow some blogs that are so different from mine that I just find interesting. I think WP is filled with so many different niches and that’s what keeps it interesting.

  25. Staying active. You’d think this would be a no brainer, but man, I see people just disappearing for a month or two(!!!!) at a time, with no explanation and when they come back they expect every one to simply pick up again. I finally instituted a rule that I stop following someone unless they post once a month, unless they post that they will be taking a break for reason X. I want to follow other bloggers who take it as seriously as I do.

    1. So true, if someone doesn’t post for more than six weeks with no explanation I tend to unfollow them. There’s no point following people that are not active.

  26. Clear and concise!

    1. Thanks so much!

  27. Great advice Pooja…

    1. Thanks so much.

  28. Hey there, I like your work.
Would like to connect and learn more.
Unfortunately I cannot find any follow button.
I hope you don’t mind if you can follow me first. I promise to follow back immediately, thanks

  29. Hey

    Cool blog

Will give it a like and follow 😛

  30. Jk 😛

    Loved this idea PooG.

If we give positive energy, we should expect similar response.

    Loved reading it.
I wish I can find more time tho 🥺

    1. Haha look at you becoming a spammer in my comments 😅

Thanks and absolutely. If we’re positive and friendly we should expect other bloggers to behave the same way.

Thanks and I get it, time is always the issue 😫

      1. Spamming is the way to turn away the readers 😛

From last 2-3 days I have even lesser time.

        1. Yeah, I’ve noticed you’ve been missing lately. 😫

  31. Hii Pooja! How have you been?

Coming back from my break to read your first point made me feel guiltyyyyy😂
All your points are true and will be incredibly helpful for new blogger’s

    1. Hi, it’s so nice to see you back here!

Haha don’t worry, at least you came back and can start blogging again 😊

  32. This right here!

“This a big no. Spamming other bloggers will pretty much get you blacklisted on this platform. People don’t like it when you spam them with a million likes in under a minute or if you leave “please follow me” comments on their site”

It will get you blocked quicker than a New York minute with me. I cannot stand it!

    1. Same here, spammers are so annoying and I have no patience left for them!

      1. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Yes!

  33. All good lessons, Pooja. I’m pleased to say that, in my experience, lots of WP bloggers are very good at responding to comments.

    1. Thanks so much, I’m so glad to hear that. Yes, for the most part people here are quite interactive.

      1. yes surely not i ?

  35. Great post Pooja and thank you! I have learned a lot from you about blogging…🤩 I agree, I have had a great experience on this platform and find as long as you are respectful, you will get the same in return. Have a awesome day!

    1. Happy to share it and so glad you’ve learnt from my advice posts! 😊
Very much so, people here keep the same energy so if you’re nice and positive they will be too. Have an awesome day too!

  36. Good reminders, Pooja! Spamming other bloggers is a pet peeve of mine. Being active with good quality posts and camaraderie is most important.

    1. Thanks so much! Oh absolutely, spammers really get on my nerves sometimes. True, being genuinely interactive helps immensely with growth.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja!

  37. Thanks for sharing , very informative .

    1. My pleasure, thanks so much.

  38. Lovely piece of advice you have given, Pooja

    1. Thanks so much.

  39. Can you share a bit about tagging posts? I see on this one you have a lot of variations on “how to blog” – how do you pick tags to build your audience?

And yeah, like spammers can go pound sand.

    1. Sure, absolutely. With tags, I always say the perfect amount is about 8-10. And use some very specific and some broader tags. So for example, with a pasta recipe post you can add some specific tags like “easy pasta recipe” and some broader ones like “food.” I have a post where I talk about this in more detail: https://lifesfinewhine.ca/2019/08/29/how-to-use-tags-correctly/
      Hope that helps.

    1. Thanks so much.

  40. “There are thousands of bloggers here ” Actually the number is closer to 50 million active. And yes, many are here just to sell a product (I am, too); which can equate to spamming. It’s definitely a new world! Brave? somewhat. Certainly crazy making.
    Your posts *are* great!

    1. Thanks so much. Yup, many of us are here to sell something and it helps give us a bigger audience.

  41. Great tips.Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks so much!

  42. Good tips! I’ve had a lot of “I follow you, so you MUST to follow me back right now” spamming over the last few months. The same account will leave it on multiple posts in a short span of time. One of the accounts who does this has multiple WP sits, all of which spam in that same way. I’ve also run into a lot of spam comments wherein the comment seems to exist solely for the same of delivering engagement and it’s obvious the person who left it didn’t read the post.

    That, uh, grinds my gears.

    1. Urgh yes, that grinds my gears too. It’s so annoying when spammers do that. Leaving an actual genuine comment will get you so far in comparison.

  43. Living that eggplant emoji life around here = Getting your peach 🍑 unfollowed and ignored around here real quickly!

    1. For sure!

  44. Much appreciate you sharing your wisdom 😃

    1. Thanks so much ☺ So sorry for the late reply your comment was stuck in my spam.

      1. It’s crazy how that happens, no? At least one a week for me

        1. Same here, it’s so annoying. The spam system needs to really be better.

  45. Very good points, Pooja! 🌺

    1. Thanks so much! 😊

  46. There are plenty of reasons why you have 26,000 subscribers, Pooja, and it’s important we follow your generous guidance. Thank you for these important points. I honestly don’t know how you keep up with everyone. You must spend your whole day on WordPress. I’m grateful that you do. I enjoy your presence very much.

    1. Thank you so much. I think I love blogging so it doesn’t feel like work for me. Even when I was getting my degree I tried to stay as active as possible. Anyway, thanks again for your wonderful comment.

  47. thanks for sharing, Pooja…🤍

    1. Always happy to help 💕

  48. Very informative, thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  49. Great advice! Spam has got to be my most dreaded part of blogging. So annoying!!

    1. Thanks and true, spam is the worst!

A & J PEI Treasures/E Jean Simpson, BEd, BA, MA

    Great advice!

  51. Those are very valid points. I could not agree more.
I used to think that by doing nothing, people would stumble on my blog. And then I got over that mind set and actively began talking to people on WP. Now I have a small community of people I love talking to.

    1. I think that’s a mistake most of us bloggers make. We think the traffic will just come on its own but it’s not like that. So glad you decided to start interacting 💕

  52. Great advice! And I wish people would learn that spamming makes them look so ridiculous. I hate that.

    1. Oh for real, spamming just makes everyone dislike their blog!

  53. I agree with your list. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much.

  54. These are good tips. Tips 1 and 2. I try to work on, and it is good to be like that to get better at being active. While I am late to the punch on this, all bloggers can learn from this, I know I do since I am still learning things as a blogger. I try my best to not comment spam or like spam unless there is something I want to say. Great post.

    1. Thanks so much.I’m so glad you found the post helpful. I think interacting is great and commenting when you have something to say is the best way to grow. Thanks again.

      1. You are most welcome and, of course, these blogging tips have good info, great for new or old bloggers. And no doubt, interacting is great as people can meet new bloggers, and you can slowly create a friendship over time. And again, you are most welcome. :3

  55. I hardly get any eggplants, and I think I should be getting a bit more at least 😅. I think I’d welcome a friend sharing a different opinion, and I wouldn’t mind glancing at a stranger’s jibe.

    1. Lol they can be fun sometimes 😅

  56. These are great tips, Pooja, thank you for posting. Yours was one of the first blogs I started following and I have always been impressed with how responsive you are and how you comment on all my posts (which there haven’t been any in a few days, as I’m under the weather). You demonstrated a practice I’ve tried to keep up with, engaging with others and it’s one of the best parts of the blogging experience… a bunch of positive friends, encouraging each other in a world that wants to tear us down.

I had one fellow who kept asking me to follow him for the longest time, but his posts didn’t interest me at all, so there was no point in me pretending, I thought. I also remember getting spam likes… no way someone could read ten posts much less listen to all the songs in 20 minutes! I might have fallen for that once, though…

    “Eggplant emoji”… that’s a good one! 😏

    1. Thanks so much! Sorry about that, hope you feel better soon.

Being active is a big part of blogging, one I enjoy very much. This platform is filled with a lot of great people like yourself and it’s nice to make new friends.

Oh yes, the spammers are everywhere!

      1. Thank you very much. I guess we all get under sometimes.

        Yes the sure are everywhere!

        1. My pleasure. Yes, I think so.

  57. Love this, Pooja! Admittedly I have been struggling a little to be as active as I’d like to be between blogging and college so this was a nice little reminder.

    1. Thanks so much and glad to hear that! I totally get it though it’s hard to stay active when studying. I posted a lot less when I was in uni.

  58. I definitely agree with your list, Pooja! I feel similarly to you about being responsive, and spamming others! I’d never spam anyone! And I just love chatting, so am always glad when I receive comments on what I write! As you said, most bloggers on WP are awesome and kind. Xx

    1. Thank so much! Yeah, people here are nice and for the most part the comments are lovely. That’s great, I’m always happy to receive comments too!

  59. Everything from your blog is so perfect, you bring quality content.

    1. Thank you so much.

  60. Short but sweet! I love it! I’m a new blogger, I wrote about tarot and everything witchy and wonderful! Thank you for the advice

  61. Thanks for highlighting very essential

    1. It’s my pleasure.

  62. Thanks I did some of these things myself. It was really helpful! 😉

    1. Oh good, so glad to hear that! 😊

  63. Loved this!

    1. Thank you!

  64. Great advice Pooja you have wonderful skills to write a blog

    1. Thanks so much, I really appreciate you saying that.

  65. Great advice as usual Pooja, I am guilty of dropping my blog when things get busy.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah, that happens unfortunately. Blogging can be time consuming and it’s hard to make time for it when life gets busy.

  66. Always engage… It’s time consuming, but life is about reciprocity. And if you genuinely enjoy people’s work, pay them a courtesy visit at least once in a while. Everyone appreciates a friendly visit.once Ina while..👏👏

    1. Yes, I absolutely agree. Even if it’s a short comment it still means a lot to bloggers 😊

  67. 🍆 are why I stopped being part of the “sober” community here. The majority of them are “trying” to be sober, but instead just end up getting drunk and lashing out against everyone. SOBERING reminder of how I used to be. Lol

    1. Oof that really sucks but at least the community in general here is pretty nice other than the occasional 🍆

  68. Very informative post!! 🙏

    1. Thanks so much! 😊

  69. Always great advice. You are very appreciated for all of the advice you share with us. What would we do without you teaching us what to do and what not to do when blogging? You are an inspiration. We all are proud of you, and to know you. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.

    1. Thank you so much. I’m so glad my advice posts help others.

  70. I have taken note of everything you said. I think my greatest mistake, which I’m still making, is solely focusing on growing my blog using SEO. I really don’t know what type of content to publish to generate leads from the WordPress community since I monetized my site with AdSense. However, following your blogs, I have learned some valuable lessons. I’m starting a new WordPress blog soon, which will primarily focus on satisfying users rather than search engines.

    1. I think a lot of us bloggers make that mistake but what I’ve realised is that it’s best to focus on both not just one. SEO is important but so is focusing on your users/readers.
