A New Friend

A New Friend

A tap in the night

Gave me quite a fright

At my window I saw

A little black paw

Tapping away was a black cat

At the window it sat

I opened the window and let it in

It was wet and quite thin

I fed and cared for it

And at my feet it would sit

Best friends we became

Until things started getting insane

The cat would disappear every week or two

What it did, I had no clue

But soon friends and family began to disappear

And for my life I began to fear

Until I finally found an email

That made my face pale

They were all in on it

I had to take a breath and sit

Murder they had planned

That was the evidence I had found

All for my money and life insurance

I now knew in an instance

My little friend had been protecting me

By making sure I was free

From those that wished me death

And so with no regret

I removed them all from the will

And left everything to my little friend at the windowsill

About “A New Friend”:

There is such a funny story behind this poem. Not funny haha but funny as in what a funny coincidence. Basically, last year I wrote a poem and submitted it to be entered into a poetry anthology. Unfortunately, they did not think it was the right fit and I didn’t get it. And I forgot all about the poem until I saw this image today. And then I thought, this poem would be perfect with the image. So, since I couldn’t share it on the book I’ll share it with you guys today. Also, the people who published that anthology is who I’m working with for my first book. It’s a small world y’all.

And of course, this is my response to Kevin’s No Theme Thursday post for the week. You guys know how much I love participating in these. I swear Kevin made this week’s images with me in mind because some are so relatable lol! Like for most of them I have poems already written and just need to add the images. It’s so crazy. And one is literally me right now. You’ll see it when I share that post later on.

If this poem has a Halloween feel to it, it’s because I wrote it during Halloween season last year. Anyway, hope you enjoyed “A New Friend.” Let me know in the comments below if you did. Or simply stop by and say hi!

  23. Hi. Such a good cat and what a clever poem that tells its tale (sorry for the implied pun with tail). A win-win for the teller and the cat. And for you as teller, too. I think it would be grand as a Hallowe’en offering. Don’t you have a monkey coming to your window or some such? I hope your day is pleasant.

    1. Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the poem. Yes, the monkey still visits occasionally but most often it’s stray cats. Hope your day is good too.

  24. I like the story behind this poem, Pooja. The cat was your little spirit guide. I hope to participate in Kevin’s prompts one day. It looks fun.

    1. Thanks so much. You absolutely should. I always enjoy the prompts on his site and they allow a lot of room for creativity.

  25. I’m betting the cat wrote the note. They weren’t after you. The cat just made you paranoid to get the cash!! 🤣😎🙃

    1. Lol, be careful you may hear a tapping on your window too 😅

      1. There’s always something tapping at my window. But I don’t talk to strangers. 🤣😎🙃

        1. Thta’s smart 😅

  26. Very enjoyable indeed. I’m not a cat person but I can be flexible for this avenger feline 😅🧡

    1. Thanks so much. I’m both a cat person and flexible lol 😂

  27. I loved it, Pooja.. it reminded me of the cat you found last year. What a twist. That cat will love like a queen.. I might come back as your cat❣️😹

    1. Thanks so much, yes we get a lot of strays in our area which is what inspired the poem! Lol that wouldn’t be bad at all 😅💕

      1. You’re so very welcome. Not bad at all.. lol😹

  28. Great poem Pooja!
I’d trust my four legged friend too.

    1. Thanks so much and I would too!

  29. Well, the cat eliminated non-family and unfriends. Unfortunately they do happen … He reminded me of Behemoth from Master and Margarita, such a devilish feline guardian non-angel

    1. Yes, I see it the same way. Oh I love the Master and Margarita, I can see how it would remind you of that. I remember reading it when I was studying the Soviet Union.

      1. Really? I didn’t know ppl study it , that’s awesome

        1. I don’t know if everyone studies it but I took a very specific Cold War course which is why I studied it.

          1. That’s pretty cool

            1. Yeah, my courses were quite fun since they were so specific.

              1. Sounds like it

  30. I love your poem, Pooja, and it’s perfect for the image and for Halloween! 🙂 💞🐈‍⬛
