A Devil Without A Disguise

A Devil Without A Disguise

The Devil went down to Georgia

Cigarette in his mouth

Only one goal in mind

He was looking for the man

That has sold him soul all those years ago

In he walked, into the bar

A devil without a disguise

Everyone hurried out in horror

But Johnny sat there calmer than ever

“You promised me your soul Johnny

And I’m here to collect what’s mine”

Johnny took a long sip of whiskey and said

“That I did but what about we make this a little more fun

You and I drink till the sun sets

If you win I’ll come down with you, I’ll even bring some friends

If I win you have to let me stay and never bother me again”

The Devil laughed and agreed

He sat besides Johnny and the bartender brought another glass

Soon bottles of whiskey surrounded them and the Devil could take no more

He lay on the floor groaning and barely conscious

Johnny smiled, still calmer than ever and said

“You may be the Devil but this here is Georgia

We can handle a drink or ten any day of the week”

The Devil knew that he had been beat and returned to Hell alone

And Johnny?

He remained a legend in those parts and never did see the Devil again

The poem doesn’t have that deep of a meaning, just me having fun with this week’s prompt. This poem was inspired by the popular country song, The Devil Went Down To Georgia:

  1. After losing in a fiddle contest and now a drinking contest, the devil was probably too embarrassed to face Johnny again 😅

    1. Haha yes, he was too embarrassed to show his face again 😅

  2. I enjoyed it thoroughly ….

This is a classic tale of outwitting the devil, where Johnny’s calm demeanor and ability to hold his liquor triumph over evil.

Georgia folk possess a resilience and spirit that enable them to tackle any challenge, even when confronted by the devil.

    Brilliantly put …

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, his calm demeanour and quick thinking saved him.

  3. I love this. It’s almost like a sequel. Very, very cool! 👏👏👏

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it!

  4. The stakes are too high in this game for me, Pooja… 😂

    1. Haha same here, I could never do what Johnny did 😅

  5. I love that song, Pooja, and your poem is great too. 💕

    1. Thanks so much 😊

  6. Johnny’s serene composure and shrewd bargaining tactics provided an unforeseen plot twist, beautiful 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    1. Yes, his quick thinking saved him 😊

  7. When I was a kid I heard that the violin was the devil’s instrument. In the church I grew up in the violin was not allowed, well until later. I’ve always wondered where that came from. I never asked. Old myhtology probably. In Swedish mythology an evil creature called the näcken played the fiddle and Hårgalåten is a famous Swedish old folksong about the devil playing the fiddle and all the young people in Hårga danced themselves to death. Whiskey I can more easily understand.

    1. That’s so interesting, I studied Christianity a bit but I’ve never heard of that belief before.

  8. For all those years of drinking
The doctor told Johnny about his liver condition.

He has a cancerous growth now
And cannot be removed with surgery.

Best is to take medicine and ease the pain.

He has a year or 2 at most.

    The doctor asked
If Johnny wants to say something about it.

    Johnny smiled, no 😌

I’m glad that soon I’ll meet up an old friend.

For all the sins I did my whole life.
I don’t think I have any place up there.

The doctor gave Johnny a puzzled look
And prescribed him some medicine to ease the pain.

    After a year and half

Johnny did infact meet the devil again.

Johnny: Would you like to have another round?

Devil: Even if you win today, you cannot change your future.

    Death is upon you
    The devil is here
And this time your Georgia booze won’t help you 👹

    1. Haha well, eventually we all face our fate 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like your sequel 😅

      1. He has to die 👹

  9. A cool story Pooja.

    1. Thanks so much.

      1. You’re welcome ☺️

    1. Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

  11. I loved the story. It reminded me of my younger days when I used to drink 😉

    1. Haha it reminds me of my current days 😅

    1. Not so much for the Devil lol.

  12. Oh my word, is there anything you can’t do Pooja? Great piece of writing!

    1. Aw, thanks so much!

  13. Enjoyed reading this

    1. Thanks so much.

  14. A lot of people are making deals with the Devil. You should see the animation “The Devil and Daniel Mouse” (1978) Nelvana Ltd., Canada. The animation has songs. It is interesting how many people do small misdeeds and get taken by the Devil. Whereas, some dictators make a deal with the Devil and don’t get taken until they’ve killed millions of people. Wanting fame for a song seems like a minor sin.
But it pays to play the fiddle well. I don’t know where Nero went wrong.

    1. Interesting, I’ll check out the animation.

It’s true, often people who do the worst things don’t face the consequences till they’ve committed many atrocities.

      1. Hmm, maybe the worst people are self-motivated to seek money and power. However they became immoral (childhood trauma, cult, parents or leaders…etc.) they’re good at it and don’t need the help of a personal visit from the Devil. Those who have minor tendencies to be unethical can be seduced and pulled over the edge using their cravings for power etc. by an evil coach like the Devil by trickery. I wonder if there’s a theme to when and why authors decide to personify evil and whether the person seduced is basically a good person gone astray.

  15. The devil didn’t know what he was getting himself into! Haha! Good one, Pooja.

    1. Lol, he sure didn’t haha!

  16. 😂😂😂 I’m sure the Devil didn’t have another drink for centuries after that encounter!

    1. Yes, he decided never to drink again 😅

  17. I thought I recognized some of the song in there! Like you say, a fun response to the prompt. Always good to have a little fun! I hope you’re having a good day and week.

    1. Oh nice, I thought you might notice the similarities! Thanks, I’m having a good week and hope you are too.

      1. It’s pretty good, thank you. Finally some warmer, sunny weather. I was able to set up our screened outdoor seating area today. It was very dirty and dusty from winter.

        1. Oh nice, enjoy the sun.

  18. I can imagine hearing this as a song. Well-done. And it’s good to know way the devil can be defeated. Do you ever write and sing country?

    1. Thanks so much, so happy to hear that. I sing a lot of country songs but haven’t really written any.

      1. Well, I think you have written a country song. (And I meant to say “ways,” pardon me.) Not that you need another things to do, but you could keep going.

        1. Perhaps so, maybe I’ll give it a try sometime. Just need to find a good chorus.

  19. Wonderful story Pooja.. Very intriguing. 🌞

    1. Thank you so much ☺️

  20. And I know exactly where that Devil wound up going according to duo Baccara song The Devil Went to Laredo.

    1. Oh haha that’s a good sequel to this one lol.

  21. It was mind blowing. Well done.. have you gone through the site as you asked?

    1. I’ll check it out today. I got a bit busy yesterday.

      1. 🥺
        Okay…

  22. Without a disguise
    He was terribly great,
    Yet couldn’t win
    Since Johnny was his kin

    1. Ooh that’s an interesting addition.

  23. 😂😂👏👏 I absolutely enjoyed this PoojaG. Johnny drank old Lucy under the table lol. Loved the flow, loved the engaging world, and the setting, and the few lines of dialogue was perfect. Well done. ❤️🤗😜

    1. Thank you so much 😊 I tried to just have fun with it and glad you enjoyed it 💕

      1. That’s the best way to write Flash pieces. Just choose a character and run with it. You did great 😜🙏

  24. Devil is too weak to hang with Johnny! LOLOLOLOL

    1. Lol! 😂

  25. Soooo enjoyed, Pooja…
devil / human (one in the same lol) without a disguise….great as always 💫

    1. So glad you enjoyed it 😊

      1. 🤍🌷🤗

Interesting. Years ago, there was a popular song Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels Band. Not the same as your poem, but an interesting aside for you.

    1. Yes, that’s the song that inspired it. I think I linked it at the bottom of the post. I love that song.

  27. Look I’ve been to Georgia, and met the folks. If the devil has that much trouble there, I’ll be running hades within a week of my arrival 🤣🙃😎

  28. Drink till the devil is out of you. Wish it worked like that in reality.

    1. Yes, if only it was that easy.

  29. My pulse pumps out a beat to the ghost dancer. My eyes are dead and my throat’s like a black hole. And if there’s a god would he give another chancer,
an hour to sing for his soul

    1. Wow, awesome short poem.

  30. absolutely awesome poem pooja! xoxox

    1. Thank you so much!
