How To Increase Your WordPress Following By The End Of 2024

Can you believe 2024 is about to end? I can’t even believe 2023 is over. Well, time flies and that’s the way it is. But before 2024 ends, you may have some goals you would like to complete. I know that a number of bloggers would like to grow their following. Not everyone, I’m sure. A lot of people blog simply as a hobby. I get a lot of DM’s, emails etc asking me on advice about growing one’s blog. Since my older advice posts may be a little dated, I decided to write another post on how to increase your WordPress following. And this one will give you much more current advice.

Since this post focuses on how to increase your WordPress following, I will leave our advice like SEO as that’s not as much about your WP following as it is about email followers and Search Engines. This post will focus on WordPress alone. Mostly because I know SEO isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. And it can also be quite complicated for those that may not be as tech savvy. For now, I wanted to give more easier advice that could be followed by everyone. If you would like to read SEO related posts, you can find them here.

So, without any further ado, here is my advice on how to increase your WordPress following:

It’s A Two Way Street

One thing that I have noticed, and I’m sure many of you have noticed too, is that WordPress is often a two-way street. People are much more likely to follow, comment or like your post is you do the same. It just means that it’s a give and receive sort of relationship when it comes to blogging.

So, if you are hoping to get some new followers or even just grow your blog in general, try to visit new blogs and get to know new bloggers rather than just focusing on the ones you have now. This will bring new people to your blog and if they end up enjoying your content, they will follow you.

Now, I’m not saying spam people and like ten posts in ten seconds. Please don’t do that. Take the time to actually engage with their content before hitting that like button. And if possible, leave a meaningful comment about their blog post.

Tags And Categories

Tags and categories are so incredibly vital if you are looking to grow your blog. I genuinely cannot emphasise this point enough. If you don’t get anything else from this post, please keep this one thing in mind. You may be wondering why tags and categories are so important. Well, the reason is that you need tags and categories to categorise your posts correctly.

And why is that? Well, because when people search for content to do with that category on WP you want your posts to come up. Your target audience should be people that are interested in your niche or niches and this is the best way to get your content to them directly without even having to do much. If they find your blog and see that it provides content they are interested in, they are quite likely to follow you.

Related Post: How To Use Tags Correctly

Use The Force… I Mean Algorithm

Like most of these type of social platforms, the algorithm is key. It’s what brings people to your blog but can also take people away from your blog if not used correctly. That’s why you need to make sure you’re using features like tags properly and not spamming the algorithm by using too many tags and/or categories. And you want to make sure to make your posts easy to crawl so that the algorithm can identify the keyword or keywords and push your content to the appropriate audience.

Content

At the end of the day, nothing else will work if your content is not high quality content. If you’re blogging just for fun, as a hobby and don’t care about growth then feel free to post whatever you like. But if you are hoping to grow your following then the quality of your content is vital.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying every post has to be perfect. As humans, we make mistakes. We make grammatical errors, typos and even spelling mistakes now and then. But your post needs to be readable for the most part. Try to edit it and minimise mistakes as much as you can.

In general, people tend to follow blogs that have good content more often than blogs that are difficult for them to read due to having too many errors. So, even while implementing everything else, make sure to properly focus on your content and put out the best content you can.

And this goes without saying, but quality over quantity. Always.

Conclusion

I hope this post helped you better understand how to increase your WordPress followers. And one thing I’ll add is that it’s not always about followers. I know it feels good when someone follows you but it’s also about how active your blog is. If you get comments and people enjoy your content, that’s a really awesome thing too. Oh and there’s that WordPress glitch happening at the moment where it tells you that you have less followers than you actually have so yeah. You can read more about it here.

  1. All good points, Pooja. 😎 I have often wondered if I am using too many tags and categories.

    1. Thanks so much. I’ve noticed you use about 8 tags per post which is a good amount. I would actually recommend using more, a minimum of 10 😀

      1. Really? I thought I used more! They are usually the same tags and categories too. I hope that isn’t bad, Pooja. I have never installed a SEO plugin.

        1. No it’s not a bad thing but I would really recommend using at least 10 tags and one category per post.

          1. Just one category?

            1. You can use two categories if you need to but no more than that.

              1. I don’t understand why though, Pooja.

                1. Mostly because categories are less important than tags and since you can only use a maximum of 15 tags and categories altogether it’s better to use less categories and more tags. Also, using too many categories may confuse the algorithm about the topic of the post.

                  1. Wow, you are very knowledgeable, Pooja!

                    1. Thanks, it’s something I’ve been interested in for quite a few years now 😊

                    2. I know, I have thought about re-doing my comment and category tags for a while now. W think I have too many. And some never get used.

                    3. Yeah, try to redo it if you feel like. It’s good to keep updating our blog.

                    4. Thank you, Pooja! Have a wonderful new week. 🙏🏻😊❤️

                    5. Thanks and you too! 🥰

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, so many wonderful and creative people on here. It’s nice to interact with everyone. I’m glad you’re open to words now. I think sometimes work makes us not want to communicate but when we’re free we have more to say. Haha yes, most of my followers are silent viewers. Which I don’t mind at all since comments could become overwhelming.

  11. Another helpful post, Pooja. Interacting with other bloggers does help your growth. I think once you hit a certain threshold it becomes more difficult to do that daily, that’s why it’s important to build that relationship. Tags can be a nightmare, but they do work to keep your blog visible. And you’re right, quality is king. It beats quantity any day. Also it’s important to remember that not everyone will love your content, so you gotta enjoy what you’re doing at the end of the day. The growth will come. Great post, Pooja

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, I think interaction is a great way to grow and also meet more likeminded people. I’ve met so many awesome people here, including yourself. That’s so true, some people will love your content and others won’t but that’s okay. Thanks again 😊

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. And thx..always nice to be appreciated 😊

        1. You’re very welcome ☺️

  12. another helpful and informative share, Pooja…thank you 🤍

  13. Very good advice Pooja. Thanks

    1. Thanks so much 😊

      1. My pleasure

  14. Thank you for sharing such good points! I definitely agree with connecting with more people as much as possible and that quality content is very important. I am looking forward to your seo related posts and I’ll definitely check out the ones that are already there!

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it. Absolutely, quality and interacting is vital. Hope the SEO related posts are helpful, I try to keep it simple.

  15. 🌹Thank you very much for sharing and for the tips. Good luck and have a nice day

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share 😊

  16. 🙏🏻🌹🌹

  17. I think that sounds like very good advice. I think have a few things I need to address with my new blog.

    1. Thanks so much. Hope it helps.

  18. Some really solid advice here. Thank you for sharing your insights!

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share!

  19. Excellent advice. Tags are easy to use and even easier to get missed up with.

    1. Thanks so much, yes absolutely.

  20. My piece of advice, that’s tangentially related, is not to take it personally if someone stops following you. Just accept that it happened and move on.

    1. That’s so true, sometimes people just don’t vibe with your content anymore and that’s okay. It happens.

  21. Good sensible advice thank you.

    1. Thank you so much.

  22. A very helpful and informative post. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it.

  23. no al gore rthyms pooja

    1. Not al gore lol 😂

      1. yes our liege and founder of the modern day net

  24. I like the way you use simple hacks that anyone can follow.

    1. Thanks, yeah I try to keep it simple.

  25. When you said, “SEO’s isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.” You got that right 😂
I have tried to understand it but have failed every attempt.

    1. Lol yeah, SEO is really not for everyone and it can be really complicated. I failed a bunch of times before I got the hang of it too 😅

  26. Thank you! ❤️

    1. Happy to share the information! ❤️

  27. Great post, Pooja and things have changed which I’m still trying to figure out❣️

    1. Thanks so much, yes so much has changed recently 💕

  28. I can’t believe the year is coming to an end. I don’t know if I should be happy or sad

    1. I know what you mean, it’s so crazy how this year just started and now it’s ending.

  29. Pooja, good info as always, thanks. In your link, you mentioned tagging to match something that’s trending is good for views. Is there a way WP shows what’s trending?

And I thought liking 30 posts in 30 seconds was the way to go 😉😂 Ugh. Ding! Ding! Ding! 😑

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, you can check which tags are trending here: https://wordpress.com/tags

Lol it’s a great way to get unfollowed I get so annoyed when I get a million likes in a minute 😅

  30. LOL, I’ve noticed that when I really TRIED to increase my followers or make more book sales, that it’s almost as if the algorithms noticed and said, “Whoa, not on our watch!” When I just write to share with people I feel more relaxed, feel I create better content, and let the internet gods dictate what happens with who follows and who buys books.

Would I like to have lots of followers? Sure! Am I hung up on it? Nope, because I see by the numbers of visitors I get weekly that I am reaching around 3x the amount of followers I have.

I know years ago I didn’t follow a lot of blogs that were helpful to me, I didn’t want to be seen or be “official”. I just wanted to graze. I was too raw and vulnerable to want to be seen, and if a lot of my visitors are in the same boat, but just want to come to read and learn, that cool with me!

If you have any observations about my blog or website you’ve noticed, or there are “pain points” you would like to share, I welcome your input!

Thanks for being a great source for so many to improve their sites!

    1. Lol that’s so interesting but yeah in the end putting out quality content is often enough. That’s great, traffic is important, maybe even more so than followers. I think your blog is good for now but I would recommend using less tags since using more than 15 tags and categories combined makes the algorithm stop pushing your content. I would recommend using 10-12 tags and one or two categories per post.

  31. I have a question for you , I have the pro plan , and I’ve been blogging for a while now . What is the best way to updating my blog layout . Last time I tried I messed up how some of my older posts pictures were formatted . I really want a new layout but I’m terrified of making my older blog posts unreadable. My blog is very photo heavy lol and some of my older hair dye reviews and tutorials are still being looked up .

    1. That’s a really fantastic question. The truth is, there’s always a chance your media could get messed up especially since a large part of your posts is media. I think the best way to update your layout would be to change your theme and use a more updated one. That’s good for SEO too. And since it’s a theme created by WP it will most likely not mess up your content.

      1. Okay cool thanks ! I’ll try it again , wish me luck . I think this might be an all day thing as some of my older posts used bigger pictures than even what I use now lol I started with a digital camera and some of pictures were larger . Also what’s the best way to index all of my blog as well ?

        1. Good luck, it usually takes me almost a month when I redo a clients blog so I would suggest making changes when you have a couple of days free. I think the best way to index is through Google Search Console.

          1. Oh thanks ! I didn’t know if I could index it through wordpress or some other way ! And yeah I’ll probably try sometime when I have extra time lol

            1. Indexing through Google is best since it’s free and will help with your SEO.

  32. Lots of great information. I select way too many categories! Eventually I plan to overhaul my whole site, but that’s so daunting!

One question I have is, how do you feel about deleting old posts? Do you recommend going through and weeding out posts that aren’t up to par for what one has learned since then, but aren’t terrible either?

    1. Thanks so much. I would recommend never using more than two categories max. And about 10-12 tags. That helps a lot. Oh yeah, updating your site is a game change but it’s a lot of work too. Usually, when clients hire me to give their site a makeover (I like to call it a facelift lol) it takes me like a month because there’s so many little things that go into it. And one wrong move and the whole site is ruined so you have to be super careful.

When it comes to deleting posts, I wouldn’t recommend it because it can really mess up your SEO. I mean, if you have to absolutely delete some posts and feel like you no longer what them on your site that’s fine. But if you can edit them instead, that would be much better than deleting them altogether.

      1. Wow, thanks for such a detailed response, Pooja. I took your advice about categories and tags today, and will continue to do so. <3 Maybe it will be enough to go through and consolidate categories. That way any posts I'm not especially thrilled with, will get relegated differently. 🙂

        1. You’re very welcome, hope you are seeing more traffic coming in now 😊 Oh yeah, I think that would be much better than deleting posts.

          1. We’ll see. I’m never sure if I want a lot of traffic, because I worry I wouldn’t be able to respond to everyone. When I even have a few days of not posting I find it hard to catch up and be sure I haven’t let conversations hanging uncomfortably!

            1. Yeah, it’s definitely more difficult to keep up when you have more traffic so I get what you mean.

          2. Oh, but meant to say, although I’m not sure if I want more traffic or a lot of traffic, I do always like to improve whatever I’m doing!

            1. Yeah, you always want to do your best!

  33. Some very helpful information as usual Pooj. Thank you.

    1. Thanks so much, happy to share it 😊

  34. The more followers you get, though, the harder it is to keep up. At least, that’s been my experience.

    1. That’s true, with more followers it’s a lot more to keep up with as well.

  35. Great post, Pooja! ♥️🌸 Thank you so much for sharing!

    1. Thank you so much! ☺️

      1. It’s my pleasure, Pooja! 💗🌸

  36. Great post, Pooja! Thanks for putting this together! 🤗💞

    1. Thanks so much, happy to! 🤗

  37. Very useful!!! Reading, liking and comments ae essential! I hate when people spam my blog, I know they aren’t reading but going through as fast as they can to like my posts and then say “follow for follow”. I’m like yeah not over here buddy!

    1. Thank you! Yes, absolutely agree. Spammers are so annoying!

      1. Ugghhh the worse!

  38. Informative post.
Tags and categories usage tends to range from being underutilsed to being incorrectly used by most people, after I started using them to streamline my content I notice that even my older posts have been getting traffic
    ~B

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, that’s so true. You need to use it perfectly for those to work.

  39. Great advice, thank you for sharing

    1. Thanks so much.

  40. Great post always Pooja thanks for sharing this very useful advice. Just adding things like tags to your posts can make a huge difference in finding your target audience and WP is definitely a give and take platform.

    1. Thanks so much. So sorry for the late response, it seems that your comments were stuck in spam.

      1. no worries I left some comments on some of your posts and they completely disappeared I think something has gone wrong on my account. Good old WP lol

        1. That’s so odd. Lol yeah, WP and it’s glitches.
