Warning: This Evil TV show review may contain spoilers.
I have been meaning to review this show for so long because it was one of the best shows I’ve seen last year. A virtual friend recommended it and at first I was skeptical because it didn’t seem like a show I would enjoy. But little did I know just how much I would enjoy it. So finally, here is my Evil TV show review. I was going to called it “Evil review” but that sounded like I was reviewing how Evil I am lol. I’ll try to keep the spoilers to the minimum but some will be there so keep that in mind before reading.
Summary
Evil is a TV show that revolves around the life of psychologist Kristen Bouchard who after losing her job began working with David Acosta, a priest in training and Ben Shakir. The trio works for the Catholic Church and investigates people that believe they are possessed or whose family believe they are possessed and reach out to the church for help.
Both Kristen and Ben start out as skeptical non-believers but it becomes more and more difficult for them to deny that there is something sinister afoot that can’t be explained by science.
Plot
What I loved about the plot of this show was that every single episode had inexplicable plot holes which were left unexplained. Hear me out, I know that sounds crazy. At first it threw me off, it made me mad and confused. But then it all began making sense because everything was building up to something.
The other reason was because it was based on real life and in real life, we don’t get an explanation for everything. We don’t get an explanation for evil because it exists and sometimes evil wins regardless of how hard we fight against it.
We see Kristen’s life deteriorate in so many ways. And yet we see it improve too. Her connection with David and Ben is special and beautiful. It’s like she found the stability and trust she had always looked for in her parents and husband but never received.
Things become more complicated as Kristen’s mother makes some awful decisions and decides to join the forces of Evil even when it means hurting family members like her son-in-law.
The writers of this show need so much credit because they worked so hard to make every episode really realistic even though the plot involves paranormal aspects. It has so much to do with the real world, the way things are going.
Characters
I LOVED the characters. The good characters made you love them, admire them and most importantly relate to them. They weren’t perfect but they did what they could to be a source of light in a world filled with evil. And the bad characters. Wow did they make you hate them. But at the same time, you had to give them credit for how hard they worked to be evil. How much they did to bring darkness to the world. I mean, they were geniuses. Evil geniuses but geniuses.
I loved Kristen’s character but I loved David and Ben even more. They were absolutely my favourite. Ben was so funny and genuine. And David was so intelligent and kind, even after all he had been through he tried to be the best person he could be.
Sister Andrea who came in later in the show was also one of my absolute favourites too. She was brave, sharp, independent but also sweet and loving. She knew how to deal with evil, she was so prepared. Honestly, she was #goals.
The only characters that I didn’t like were Kristen’s daughters. There were too many of them, they were loud and annoying. I literally had to skip some of the scenes with them because they pissed me off. And I loved that because they showed what having kids is really like. They are loud, energetic and inconvenient. But if you’re a good parent, like Kristen was, it doesn’t matter.
Overall
Overall, I loved this show so much. I’m not a fan of paranormal stuff but this show was perfectly done. It didn’t rely on satisfying endings because in the real world there are no satisfying endings. Evil has always existed and will continue to do so. We just have to keep fighting against it the best we can.
I also loved that I learnt so much about actual Catholicism because the show was well researched. Of course, it had unrealistic aspects but a lot of stuff was based on actual beliefs. I have learnt a lot about different sects/denominations of Christianity during my time in university. I took a couple of courses that were specifically about the history of certain denominations. However, I studied almost nothing about Catholicism so this was all new for me. I found myself constantly reading more about Catholic beliefs and traditions even after finishing the show.
In my opinion, they didn’t show religion as good or bad but rather the reality of it. There will always be good people as well as those that try to use religion for their personal agendas or to oppress/hurt others. People like Father Acosta who tries so hard to help others selflessly. And then there are those that try to hurt others or assist evil people.
Final Thoughts
Watch this show, watch it immediately if you haven’t already. It makes you think, laugh, cry, yell. All the emotions you want to feel from a good TV show. One of the best shows I’ve seen.
