For Forever And Always

For Forever And Always

Life had not been kind to Maryanna. Growing up with an alcoholic father, a resentful, cold and bitter mother, uninterested older siblings and mean school bullies meant she never felt much love. And naturally she made the mistake most beautiful women that have never felt loved make. She married the first man that proposed to her. Rich, handsome, charismatic and filled with promises. He swept her off her feet and they were married in two months. Had her family cared more, they would have questioned why a man like that would be interested in eighteen year old Maryanna. But of course, they were blinded by the generous gifts he bought them.

The first few weeks were nothing but bliss. But soon, he had to travel for work and she was left bored and alone in their mansion. As she snooped around she found a locked door. She searched the house for the key but couldn’t find one until she looked behind their nightstand. She ran back to the locked door with the key and opened it only to find a small chest in it. With shaking hands she opened the chest and what she saw brought bile to her mouth. It was a beating heart. Hurriedly, she slammed the chest closed and left the room, locking it behind her.

She sat on her bed, still in shock. She had hear stories about this. A monster of a man had found a way to stop aging. Every few decades, he would steal the heart of a beautiful young woman and marry her. Only to literally steal her heart. He would store the still beating heart until it stopped beating and then he would bury it and find a new victim to sacrifice.

She would not be one of his victims. Before wasting any time, she wrote to her brother telling him she was having marital problems but not mentioning what she had seen. Like the rest of her family, she knew he didn’t care for or about her. But he cared enough about her husband’s money to visit the mansion and make sure she did not leave him. And she had been correct. As soon as he read her letter, he made his way to their mansion. The only problem was, her husband had returned from his business trip early.

She desperately tried to act normal but he immediately knew something had changed.

“You opened the door, didn’t you?” he asked her calmly.

“Yes,” she replied, honestly.

“So you saw that it was still beating?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you think I married you, Maryanna?”

“For my heart…”

“I have a heart, actually I have two,” he chuckled, looking amused. “I don’t need your heart,” he explained, looking into her eyes.

“Then… why?” she asked, confused.

“Because, I love you. I truly do… from the bottom of my hearts,” he joked.

“Umm… I don’t understand,” she admitted.

“I want to spend forever with you, Maryanna. Literally. I was out looking for a worthy heart you could to add to the chest so you can stop aging too,” he explained.

Just then, they heard a knock on the door.

“Are we expecting company, darling?” he asked her, raising his brow.

“I… I wrote to my brother and told him to come, that must be him,” she whispered, looking scared. “Are you angry?” she asked him.

“Far from it my love, it seems you found a suitable heart for the chest before I did,” he said to her. He smiled at her and took her hand in his. And just like that, two lonely souls found someone that they could spend eternity with, never feeling unloved and alone again. Who said soulmates don’t exist? As for Maryanna, legend has it that she still roams the street every few decades looking for hearts to steal.

About “For Forever And Always”:

I was inspired to write “For Forever And Always” when I saw the cover image on Kevin’s blog post. He encourages bloggers to create content from the images he shares on the post and this one stood out to me. It’s been A MINUTE since I wrote a short story. I’ve not felt inspired to write one recently but this image inspired me.

As for the story, it’s sort of just me having fun with it. You know I love my twists and turns and hopefully this story has a number of them. It was fun to write so hope it’s enjoyable to read. For Forever And Always is slightly inspired by Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber. I read it in High School as it was part of our required reading. It’s disturbing but I thought it was extremely creative and enjoyed (I don’t know if that’s the right word lol) it.

Do check out Kevin’s awesome blog by clicking here.

  1. Wow, Pooja, that was captivating! I’m glad that my heart is still in place. 😳

    1. Thanks so much! Lol yes thankfully so 😅

  2. Wonderful story, Pooja! 💕📚

    1. Thanks so much! 😊

  3. Sounds like Bluebeard

    1. It’s inspired by The Bloody Chamber which is actually inspired by Bluebeard so good catch with that.

      1. Have come across it a few times. In the latest post I mention writing classes and groups a bit. Hope you are well.

        1. I am and hope you are as well.

          1. Am in good health albeit basically homeless. It will pass. I have support. Unfortunately a lot of “do gooders” spreading positive messages are actually targeting people like me and they got very defensive last week when they realised this street person has a lot of (compassionate) privilege behind me, that they seek to wrest incompetent control over and from. WordPress followers increase and recruiters are now talking with me…
Back to the top though… fit to burn 🔥 it will almost be a shame to come in 😅

            1. Yes, I was sorry to read about that but I’m glad you have support. Stay strong 💪🏽

  4. You had me out searching for hidden doors in the home Pooja. What a stressful morning you gave me. 🙂 🙂

    1. Haha, hopefully you didn’t find any hidden doors 🙂

    Bravo! 👏 👏💐

    1. Thank you! ☺️

  6. I think the story is good work. I appreciate the twist that came from the husband, as I was expecting Maryanna to become the latest victim. The next twist about the brother has some justice in it in that he is indifferent to his sister as is the rest of the family. And he becomes the victim, then. The story has the feel of ancient European lore, only you wrote the tale, as inspired, in the here and now. Well done!

    1. Thank you so much! I was going for that exact vibe when I wrote this. I wanted it to be like a twisted fairytale I guess.

  7. I absolutely loved reading it 😍

What a well written story and what an amazing twist ❤️

This is what I was talking about yesterday, you are evolving as a writer.
You give something new always ❤️

Btw a great continuation to your earlier post about soulmates 😅

    1. Thanks so much! Actually I added that part about soulmates on purpose to tie it to my earlier post. So glad you caught that 😅

        1. I wouldn’t say genius but thank you 😅

  8. Wow! This is an awesome twist, Pooja! I absolutely love it! 👏👏👏
This truly is a captivating (love?) story. When I made that image, a tale like this was the furthest thing from my mind. The creativity is very inspiring! I cannot thank you enough for doing this challenge and delivering such an awesome take! 😊😊

    1. Thank you so much! It’s a love story but a twisted one I guess… We all see the same image and imagine different stories which is the best part. Thank you for creating the image which inspired this! 😊

      1. It was my pleasure, believe me. Hopefully I can create more inspiring images in the future!
It’ very fascinating to see this, or anything, really, through other people’s eyes. It gives a whole new perspective to everything.

        1. Yes, it would be so fun to this again!

          1. Any Thursday swing by and see if something strikes your fancy!

  9. I love it. I was drawn in.

      1. You’re so very welcome.. I sure did.. i know, I was surprised I LIKED it!💓

  12. Yo… Loved the story. Loved the inspiration. Great writing Pooja. I love me some dark love stories. You nailed it with the twisted love. Romance can be a litted twisted sometimes, and still be fun. 🤪👏👏👏

    1. Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. I love darker stories too so I decided I wanted this one to be particularly twisted 😅

  13. Slightly gruesome but still a lovely loved story Pooja. You must write more fiction 👍🏼👏🏼

    1. Thanks so much, I hope too but rarely feel inspired to write fiction 😅

      1. You’re most welcome. I get you but if you want, you have the gift to write it.

        1. Thank you, that’s a big compliment coming from you since I really admire your writing.

          1. You’re most welcome. It is the truth. I’ve discovered that trying new styles and genres helps us grow as writers

            1. Yes, that’s very true.

  14. Impressive story. Nice image too. Thanks.

    1. Thanks so much.

  15. Great story. Loved the twists. I need to research how I can get a medical license to do this. But first I have to find love — that’s difficult. Indifferent, cruel, and unloving people — they’re easy to find. It’s good that the man doesn’t have to be a Beast as in “Beauty and the Beast.” I’m not sure where you go to get authorization. Usually there’s someone in charge of magic who will allow some people to get immortality. I’m not sure what the responsibility is for the one granted immortality — : saving unloved women? If there’s more than one person with this power, it could be quite a competition for hearts. That will drive up the price of hearts. An odd thing: immortal humans compete for hearts and robots compete for batteries.

    1. Thanks so much. I think you may need to check the dark web for that license lol. Immortal humans competing for hearts and robots competing for batteries sounds like it could be an interesting dystopian book.

  16. This is an interesting story, the whole time I was reading it while picturing it visually*. 😅

    1. Thanks so much, lol that’s kind of flattering to hear because I was hoping it was descriptive 😅

      1. You are welcome.😄

  17. What a heartless pair. Poor brother!

  18. delightfully twisted, Pooja 😉
    and so enjoyed…

      1. most welcome 🤍

  19. That was a very engaging story to read this morning.. I had to keep reading to see the ending, and didn’t expect the one it had. It sounds like a great plot for a romance novel… Thank Pooja!! Have a fantastic weekend!

    1. Thank you so much, I do enjoy writing unexpected twists. So glad you enjoyed it. Have an awesome weekend too!

  20. first to love last to know
    she had much to show

      1. My pleasure, Pooja! ❣️

  23. That’s a very evocative drawing…

    1. Haha yes, she is beautiful and WP seems to have conveniently cut off her face on the Reader 😅

      1. The stupid reader always tries to center the pix, sigh…

        1. It totally ruins the image. I miss the good old days when the entire image would show no matter the size.

  24. Interesting story, Pooja.

    1. Thank you so much.

  36. If your darker side, not only the good side, can find home with someone, then that seems a good marker for a soulmate. As I always say, you should write more💕

    1. Thanks so much 😊
