Death And Other Details Review
Recently, I finished watching the first season of Death And Other Details, an original Hulu show. As you probably know, my family and I are a sucker for a murder mystery. This show sounded really good so we quickly got into it. Here is my review Death And Other Details:
Plot
I have a little bit of a love and hate relationship with the plot. It started out amazing and I found it very interesting. But by the end, there were quite a few loopholes and some things were left handing. Considering how the season ended, I get the feeling they will deal with those plot holes in future seasons but for now the last episode sort of felt like it was lacking and left too many questions unanswered. Basically, it just felt unsatisfying.
The plot started out great though. We’re introduced to Imogene, the main character, and the rich and privileged people she has surrounded herself with. We’re also introduced to Rufus who Imogene knows from her childhood. We slowly find out that Imogene’s mother was murdered in front of her and Rufus, the “world’s best detective” was hired by her best friend Anna’s parents to solve the murder. However, it was the one case that stumped him and soon he was let go. For years it haunted him and we learn that he never gave up on it even after he was fired.
The story really begins when they are once more all together on a ship when one of the people on the ship is murdered. Imogene becomes the main suspect as she was the last known person in the victims room. However, as the plot unravels we realise there’s a lot more to it and that everyone has their own secrets and motives. One name, however, keeps coming up. Victor Sams. Who is Victor Sams and why does he target the rich? And more important, what does it have to do with the death of Imogene’s mother?
I was pretty hooked to the show until the last two episodes which felt a bit forced and unrealistic. As I said, there were some pretty big plot holes that I couldn’t get past.
I wanted to also mention that the plot dealt with a lot of real life problems such as the increasing gap between the wealthy and the working class. The unethical practices of big corporations and more. I appreciated that they did that because it made the plot much more believable and interesting.
Characters
I REALLY liked all the characters. I think the actors/actresses they picked were perfect for the roles they had. And I think it was interesting to see the characters develop as the plot did. For example, Leila’s character (the wife of Anna, Imogene’s best friend) starts off as paranoid and weird. We begin questioning her sanity. But overtime, her character develops a lot and we see the world as she sees it. And we realise that she was absolutely right the whole time.
Imogene, the main character was really well done. She’s complex, intelligent but somewhat rash because this case is personal to her. Rufus was great too as the detective. The way both their characters evolved was great. She went from loathing him to admiring him and even looking up to him. Whereas, he became more honest and realised his mistakes in the past.
I also enjoyed the side characters, they really made the plot even better and they helped to make storyline more interesting. Some of the side characters were more like comic relief while others played a more vital part in the plot. It was great because they all balanced each other out.
Overall
Overall, I absolutely very much enjoyed the show. Was it the best murder mystery I have seen recently? No. But it was still really well made, the plot was so enjoyable for the most part, the acting and directing was great, the twists and turns at the end of each episode left me wanting more. And every episode progressed the story so there was no awkward boring moment in-between.
Everyone has their own motives and secrets so that also made the show more interesting. I’m usually very good at figuring out who the murderer is before they reveal it on the show but this one had me guessing almost till the end. It was also very emotional and touching at times. It really made me experience a rollercoaster of emotions as more and more information was revealed.
The only thing was that I was disappointed by the ending. I thought more people would pay for what they did but instead most of the people held hostage on the ship were freed. Even though Victor Sams promised otherwise. I also felt that the person they revealed to be Victor Sams sort of ruined the plot for me.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for a good murder mystery, I would absolutely recommend this one. As I said, it wasn’t my absolute favourite murder mystery show and wasn’t even one of the best ones I’ve seen recently. But it was still really interesting and just a fun show to watch overall.
I think they are hoping for a season 2 because season 1 left us with another unsolved murder. And I will most likely watch season 2 if the show is renewed. Which I think it should be!
