The Life And Times Of Le Bronco Von Der Löwenhöhle by Thomas Wikman Review

The Life And Times Of Le Bronco Von Der Löwenhöhle by Thomas Wikman is a book I had the pleasure of reading recently and I thought I would share my review of it today. I’m sure many of you know Thomas Wikman. He’s one of the wonderful bloggers on WordPress. And I find it so lovely that he goes out of his way to support other bloggers and writers. In fact, very recently he shared a review of my book both on his blog and on Amazon.

I will link to the book’s page on Amazon but I just wanted to let everyone know that Thomas Wikman mentioned that it’s on sale at a reduced price for the entirety of July. So if you are planning on purchasing the book (and I recommend you do), this would be a great time to do it.

Amazon Summary

If you’re thinking of getting a Leonberger, or if you’ve already owned one and know how rewarding the experience can be, you’ll want to read the story of Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle, called Bronco, who came into the lives of the Wikman family of Dallas, Texas, in 2007. Bronco, a recipient of the Leonberger Health Foundation International’s Grey Muzzle Award, lived an unusually long life for a Leonberger—almost thirteen years. His human family is convinced that what helped him exceed his breed’s normal life expectancy was his brave and loving heart.

Here you’ll read about some of Bronco’s amazing feats: the night he scared away a prowler; the day he performed a hamster search and rescue; the time he stumped the Geek Squad; and the late night he snuck into the kitchen and ate a two-pound bag of dog treats, a box of pastries, a loaf of bread, a grilled chicken, and a Key lime pie, all in one sitting. You’ll also read about his unflappable calm during a north Texas tornado and his stoicism as he endured health challenges in his later years.

In addition to entertaining stories, these pages contain a wealth of practical guidance, including

  • a history of the Leonberger breed;
  • advice for the care of very large dogs;
  • breed-specific health and genetic information;
  • training and feeding tips;
  • suggestions for finding a breeder;
  • the official breed standard; and
  • an extensive resource guide.

Bronco’s fearlessness, tolerance, and affectionate nature warmed the hearts of everyone who met him, and his sometimes uncanny adventures with his human and canine companions will bring a smile to the face of every dog lover.

The author is donating the proceeds from the sale of this book to the Leonberger Health Foundation International

The Life And Times Of Le Bronco Von Der Löwenhöhle by Thomas Wikman Review

Introduction

The Life And Times Of Le Bronco Von Der Löwenhöhle by Thomas Wikman is about his beloved pet, a Leonberger named Le Bronco Von Der Löwenhöhle or Bronco for short. It’s all about the experiences they had with Bronco up until the day he passed on.

Now, I haven’t read a lot of books about animals or pets. Especially not recently. And overall, I’m not much of a dog person. I mean, they’re very cute and I love them as I do all animals but personally I prefer cats. However, this book really made me understand why Thomas Wikman and his family adored and loved Bronco.

You can tell from the get go that Bronco was such an intelligent and loving pet. He was also so full of life and energy. I love that the book has pictures and illustrations of the events described because it really helped bring each chapter to life.

Specifics

I had so much fun reading the chapters that described Bronco’s shenanigans and shared stories of him that made me chuckle. One of the ones I enjoyed was when Bronco had gotten much bigger but still wanted to sit on their laps. Wikman included an image of Bronco on the couch sitting on his wife’s lap. That one made me laugh out loud because of the size difference, Bronco was absolutely huge and you could barely even see his wife.

I also loved the story about how Bronco scared away a man that had been creeping around their neighbourhood and spying on people through their windows. Bronco seemed very protective and sharp about things like that and most likely protected the family and their neighbours from what could have escalated into a much scarier situation.

I was surprised to learn that Leonbergers are good swimmers because they’re quite large. And most pets don’t like water too much. The pictures of Bronco enjoying the water are so adorable. He does seem genuinely happy to be swimming.

The book gave me a lot of laughs but it got emotional too. I always get very sad when animals are sick on pass on. And with this book, I think I got even more emotional because I had grown to love Bronco through these stories that were shared. It was tougher than I expected reading about his health. And I had tears in my eyes as I read the chapter where they said goodbye to Bronco one final time before he went to sleep forever.

Overall

Overall, this was such a touching book. I felt such an array of emotions reading each chapter. And I think it’s so beautiful that Thomas Wikman and his family loved Bronco so much. Enough to dedicate this entire book to keeping his memories alive.

I also very much appreciated that the book contained information about Leonbergers for anyone considering getting one as a pet. A lot of people get pets they are not fully prepared to take care of. Animals are living beings and they need to be properly cared for. So, I’m sure the information shared in the book will help other potential Leonberger owners do a better job taking care of their pet/pets.

The book was so well written and I read it in just a few days. When I checked the number of pages, I was surprised because it didn’t feel long at all.

If you are someone that loves dogs or even animals in general, do check out this book. And even if you aren’t a big fan of pets/dogs/animals do consider getting this book. It’s such a fantastic read.

    1. The Leonberger is a rare breed with similarities to the St. Bernhard and New Foundland but like you say they are perfect companion dogs and very good with children and small dogs.

    2. I feel the same way, loved the book!

  10. I used to work as animal care tech at a shelter and dog groomer and I’ve seen this type of dog before . I’ve some rare ones too like Japanese chin, Karelian bear dog , and Portuguese Water dog , but never a Leonberger . They look like a big lion ! I’m also kind of sucker for dogs stories . I’ll have to check this one out .

    1. Yes you are right, they are often referred to as Lions in the Leonberger community. Incidentally, we used to have Japanese Chin, Rye, who loved Bronco. Ryu used to jumped on Bronco’s stomach to wake him up. Bronco was very sweet with the little dogs.

      1. That’s so sweet ! When my mom had her Japanese chin,Kisho ( we adopted him from the shelter ) he used to play and get along with out Rottweiler,Shaka . They would hang out and one time when I walking both of them another dog came out to grab the chin . My rottie snapped at the dog and made him back off . They were really good friends.
        Your dogs sound like they were awesome ! I saw some pics of Bronco and he was beautiful.

        1. Thank you so much oliveunicorn. It is so cool that your Japanese Chin got along so well with your Rottweiler. I had the impression that Rottweilers could be agressive, but I am probably wrong. I’ve never had one. Japanese Chins are even more rare than Leonbergers.

          1. Rotties definitely can have some aggression and I do caution people to read up on the breed and go through a reputable breeder . Mine had a bit more aggression but he was very nice to other animals and to the family . But definitely a guard dog too . I currently have a Doberman now and he’s way easier to train and manage than my rottie was . But that’s why it’s good to research breeds .
            Also I don’t think I’ve ever seen another Japanese chin in real life . They are literally so rare lol .

    2. That’s so interesting. They are really so large but seem like they have very sweet personalities. Do check it out, I’m not even a big dog person but absolutely loved this book!

      1. Yes I’ll definitely have to check it out. I like reading about rare dog breeds . And currently have large dogs myself . My Doberman definitely climbs into my lap and gives me a hug.

        1. Aw, that’s so sweet.
