I watched this literally the next day after it came out with my dad. I’d seen the preview and was so impressed by the cast, I felt it would be a great watch. Today, I decided to share my review of The Thursday Murder Club with you guys.

What I Liked

I really enjoyed the cast, they were so many brilliant actors in this movie. And I have to say, they did a very good job with their roles. That is one thing I absolutely can’t complain about. I also felt that they were cast well according to the characters. They definitely matched the vibe. I mean, David Tennant never disappoints as a bad guy.

Although the movie started out slow, it does get quite interesting once you’re about one fourth of the way through. The mystery surrounding the first death and then the second death is quite entertaining.

There were some great comedic breaks that made me chuckle. Some of the parts were darker and had a heavier tone, which is to be expected with murder mysteries. So I appreciated that there were some funny and more light-hearted parts too.

What I Didn’t Like

I had very high hopes for the movie and unfortunately in the end there were a lot of things I didn’t enjoy about it. But keep in mind, these are just my opinions. Maybe if you give it a watch you’ll feel differently.

Firstly, I felt the movie was quite long and yet not much of significance happened till the last quarter of the movie. For the first hour, I wasn’t exactly bored but I also wasn’t at the edge of my seat as I usually am with murder mysteries.

There were quite a few things with the plot that were either very far fetched or didn’t add up much. It was fine for entertainment but a well done movie would address any discrepancies and make sure things don’t feel far fetched to the extent that it feels ludicrous. I get that they were trying to add some lightheartedness to it but it could have been more realistic.

I genuinely and wholeheartedly hated the ending. It felt like the only people that faced the consequences of their actions were the people that were forced into terrible situations and did what they had to. None of the bad guys seemed to face any consequences. They were either murdered or allowed to roam free. I mean, why would you let a famous mobster just go about his life regardless of how he helped you?? A man that had committed atrocious crimes apparently. Meanwhile, Helen Mirren’s character, Elizabeth Best, was okay with not having the same energy when it came to her best friend and best friend’s husband. How odd to let a criminal (that’s murdered lots of people) go and then hold your best friend and her husband accountable for doing something when the police let a murderer go free.

Maybe they were trying to be realistic because a lot of people end up behind bars simply because they were in tough situations. And justice is not always served. But personally, it just felt like a weird choice.

Overall

Overall, I didn’t particularly enjoy the movie much. Sure, it was fine for passing the time but I’m quite sure I will never watch it again. And I didn’t find myself satisfied at all by the end of it. I’ve heard that the movie is adapted from a book series and I am assuming the books are much better than the movie. Although, if they share the same ending I would still be thoroughly disappointed. I can’t really say I recommend it unless you’re watching something purely to pass some time and have nothing better to do.

  1. Cast does look great

    1. Yup, an impressive cast but the writing wasn’t great.

  2. Great review, my friend! Hope as spring comes to the southern hemisphere, things will continue to brighten 😎😉

    1. Thank you so much!

  3. Thanks for the review

    1. Thanks so much.

  4. Thank you for the spoiler warning. It didn’t apply to me since I watched most of it and I agree with you.

    1. Oh I see, did you watch the ending? That’s what I disliked the most.

  5. I watched this with my husband, and we laughed a few times, especially at Pierce Brosnan’s character. My mom and I always had a crush on him 😊. I wanted to like it more with such a great cast, but, like you, it’s a movie I won’t rewatch. I think it would work better as a book. Actually, it may be a book; I never looked into it.

    1. He is definitely very good looking 👀 Yeah, I felt like it was a great cast but just wasn’t well executed as a movie.

  6. Surprised to hear it flunked from so many people, given the cast!

    1. I know, I was so excited for it but quite disappointed!

      1. It goes to show how ephemeral storytelling is … how easy it is to lose the audience!

        1. Absolutely, writing is so vital but sometimes we forget about the importance of good writing and focus on the actors and director instead.

  7. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  8. I follow a reviewer who read the book and she was less than impressed with it, so I can only imagine the movie is even less impressive. Sorry to that you had gotten your hopes up because of the cast. That is always a let down when the story just doesn’t do it…

    1. If the book had the same plot and ending, I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t great either. Yeah, the worst part is that it had so much potential but the writing was so awful.

  9. I actually enjoyed the movie. It’s not exactly a Murder Mystery, it’s marketed more on the comedic side as a “crime comedy.” I actually learned about it as it was populated for me on Netflix in the Comedy category.

I will agree, though, some parts are a bit slow as they build up to the premise of each murder. The cast is definitely what drew me in. I put off watching it for about a week, and then dove into it after watching a series that I ended up enjoying on byuTV.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! It was entertaining but I feel like I’ve seen better crime comedies. It had a lot of potential though. What show did you watch?

      1. I watched a series called, “A Kind of Spark.” I really liked it.

And I understand… some movies you instantly connect with, and some you just don’t.

        1. Yup, exactly. Ooh okay, that’s cool.

  10. I really looked forward to watching this, in fact, I got Netfix just to see this ~ I hadn’t had Netflix in YEARS. I love every member of that cast ~ I’ve been watching Helen Mirren & Pierce Brosnan in “Mobland”, which ROCKS. But this was quite disappointing. It should have been good. It could have been could. But it just wasn’t. It wasn’t even on a par with “Murder She Wrote”, which is a pretty low score to meet. I would have been happy with that.

With everything, it comes down to the writing. There was a good story here & it just wasn’t written very well. The cast seemed to be wandering around in search of a script & lines to say.

Perhaps there’ll be another murder for them to solve & that one will be more engaging & entertaining & most all, better written. We can only hope. This cast deserves better.

    1. I felt the same way. It had so much potential with the plot and a great cast but in the end the writing was really lacking.
I hope so, I think they could turn it around if they make another movie.

    1. Exactly, I feel like there was no justice which was depressing to watch. I mean, I would understand if it was a dark thriller but this was a crime comedy.
Yes, I saw she won the Nobel and so proud of her!

      1. Indeed Justice at Least
        With The Nobel Prize!☺️🙌

  12. Given the cast it should have been so much better than it was. But then, even great actors are dependant upon good writing. I really wanted to enjoy this movie, mainly because I like Richard Osman, the author of the book, and wanted him to have a successful entry into the movie world. It proved a disappointment. I did, though, enjoy the actors, amidst the lack lustre journey. What a fabulous cast…

    1. Yeah, I had such high hopes after seeing the cast and the trailer but was pretty disappointed. I hope they make a sequel that redeems it. Sometimes that happens.

  13. It was a charming show, to be sure.

    1. Yup and a great cast.

  14. A friend at work recommended it, so I watched. Indeed, great cast and light fare, but I agree with your review entirely!

    1. Thank you! Yeah, they had such an impressive cast and it seems a good budget but the writing was really lacking.

  15. I am not not reading this as I still
Plan to watch the movie. 😍

    1. No problem, let me know what you think of it 😊

      1. I will as soon as I get a chance to see it.

  16. I don’t have Netflix, so I can’t evaluate this film. On Rotten Tomatoes, though, this is the “general consensus”:

“Cozy as an undemanding beach reach and just as slight, this starry murder mystery leverages its terrific troupe of actors to nostalgic effect.”

Some reviewers thought, as you do, that “The Thursday Murder Club” has a great cast, excellent production values, but poor storytelling. Others, such as Steve Crum, loved it. He writes, “The title and overall concept smacks of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, but The Thursday Murder Club has a unique spin that makes it well worth watching.”

This isn’t a genre that I would easily gravitate to, so even if I had Netflix, I don’t think I’d watch it.

    1. Yeah, I think some people love it while others don’t. It’s got pretty mixed reviews. I love the genre and have watched/read so many thing in this genre that I feel like my expectations are higher especially considering the cast.

  17. Will read after watching! 😉

    1. Let me know what you think when you watch!

      1. I will! 🙂

  18. I didn’t read ahead until right at the end to avoid the spoilers. From what I can tell, it seems like a love it or a hate it kind of film for a lot of people. I’m sure avid readers of the book are going to be a little more critical of it too in certain ways understandably. Since I’ve never read the book, I’ll be interested to see how I feel about it without any of that background context beforehand.

    1. If you watch it, do let me know your thoughts! I hadn’t read the book so I went in not knowing and pretty excited but it wasn’t for me.

  19. Both my mother and I loved it.

    1. Glad to hear that, have you also read the book? I heard they’re very popular but haven’t read any.
