Hope Always Exists- World Mental Health Day

people silhouette during sunset | Hope Always Exists- World Mental Health Day | Six Word Story

Since it’s World Mental Health Day today, I thought I would share a post about mental health. As some of you may already be aware of, mental health problems are on the rise. I won’t say anything specific is to blame because I believe it’s the mixture of multiple things that is causing this. Personally, I’ve been diagnosed with depression and an anxiety disorder. I’ve had both for so long that I don’t really remember what life was like before.

I’ve learned so many things having lived with both disorders and I have shared a lot of advice on this blog already. But there is one thing I want to share today that I have really come to realise and understand. And that is the fact that there is always hope. So many people end their life and give up because they lose hope. If you’re struggling please know that it does get better. I’ve been there, I’ve been at lower points in life than I thought possible. But those moments don’t have to define you or your entire life.

If you’re struggling, get professional help. If you’re not able to do so for whatever reason, speak to someone you trust. Or use online resources. Just don’t give up. Life is a precious gift and there’s so much more to it than the difficult moments our minds sometimes fixate on.

On World Mental Health Day, I hope you remember to practice kindness, compassion and empathy because you never know what someone has been through or are going through.

  7. Absolutely!

  8. I have no idea why mental issues are on the rise but I can see some differences between the world when I was young and now. The world today has become more competitive first of all. Material wealth has increased on average, but that may not be as important as we think. Secondly there is so much crazy, misleading and even hateful content on social media. The worst of humanity is on display there. We did not have any of that when we were young. Thirdlly, there are worries young people have today that we did not have; what is AI going to do to us, to jobs, etc., and climate change (which we were just barely aware of back then), and the shift towards authoritarianism around the world, including the US. Authoritarian regimes, like the Soviet Union were big and powerful when I was young, but they were retreating, but now it looks like a creeping reversal. Looking at it all, it looks depressing to be honest. But I don’t know if it is that.

    1. I think that’s a big part of it. Back then there was still hope, these days it’s very hard to remain hopeful especially for younger generations that are working so hard but still can’t afford much, the environment/pollution is getting worse, good jobs are scarce, prices are up and social media reminds us of all the negative stuff constantly.

      1. I think it also has to do with the food we’re eating. There is a lot of genetically engineered products out there. The land has also been depleted so that the crops that do grow are not what they used to be. Also, B-12 deficiency is a huge issue, maybe from less than ideal food conditions? I don’t know, but I’ll tell you when I added enough B-12 to my diet, I am a different person.

        1. Vitamin D3 deficiencies too, that has a direct link to depression and anxiety.

  9. Excellent post. On World Mental Health Day, I forgot my therapy appointment. :/

    1. Thank you so much. Oh gosh the irony, maybe you can reschedule it?

  10. 🙏🌹❤️

    Aum Shanti

    1. Thankfully, even though empathy seems to be lacking in many there are those that remind us that there’s still many good people out there. There’s still reason to stay alive.

  12. Empathy, compassion, kindness, respect, tolerance and responsibility are the basis of what I taught at my school. We developed a loving, supportive environment. Everybody needs it!

    1. Yes, everybody needs that and especially schools that can sometimes be so rigid!

  13. You’re right, hope always exists, even when we have clouded vision that makes it difficult to find ✨️💗

    1. Yup, there’s always hope because thankfully things never remain the same for too long 💕

    Well said!

  15. Thank you for your timely and enlightening post, Pooja. A wonderful reminder that hope is always there, and we must never give up.

    1. Thank you so much. Absolutely, there’s always hope. Even if things are bad now, they won’t always be that way.

      1. You’re welcome, Pooja. This reminds me of Maya Angelou’s quote – “Every storm runs out of rain.”

        1. Such a true quote.

          1. Thank you, Pooja.

            1. You’re most welcome.

  16. I can’t agree more with what you are sharing here about hope, I have to constantly remind myself in the moment that it won’t last forever, and it doesn’t. I’m very sensitive to noise and light, fortunately it does not last forever, it comes and goes in waves, and it’s a relief to know that.
The big emotion needs to be acknowledged and sometimes accepted: I’m angry right now and it’s okay, this too shall pass. Or it’s noisy right now but it is usually followed by a quiet moment or two. It’s lonely right now but I will have company in a day or two. Makes you appreciate it more.

    1. I’m sensitive to sound, especially loud noise too so I know what you mean. Absolutely, it can be overwhelming in the moment but it doesn’t last forever. Eventually, we accept it and move forward.

      1. I am glad to learn that I’m not alone in this
I wonder if it’s an acquired thing or I have always been this way

        1. I think it can be both, for some they’re always sensitive to certain things and for others it can be a trauma response.

          1. That’s good to know

  17. That’s an important reminder about hope, as it often seems elusive to people who are suffering in the depths.

  18. Thanks for the important reminder and share Pooja! ❤️

    1. Happy to share it! ❤️

  19. I suffered depression and an anxiety disorder (agoraphobia) for just over a decade in my twenties and thirties. It took great resolve to overcome, but with meditation and a good deal of stubborn grit I made it through. The result was a stronger more resilient me.
We must never judge another harshly. We don’t know what they may be dealing with. Life is not easy. We need all the support we can get.

    1. I’m so sorry you experienced that, it must have been very difficult to overcome but it’s amazing that you did and I’m sure your life has improved thanks to that. Yes, we all need help and support when life gets difficult and that’s okay.

      1. Yes, there’s life after our difficulties. We become stronger, more resolute; and in my instance, more determined than ever to ensure my life continued to improve. 💖

  20. Great post, Pooja. Mental health is so important.

    1. Thank you and absolutely agree.

  21. It seems to be in epidemic form in today’s threatening world.

    1. Yes and it’s only getting worse.

  22. Enjoyed reading your post. From personal experience I think that there are a lot of people in the world that have some kind of or at least at some point suffer with some kind of mental health issue. I personally have CPTSD, anxiety and depression. I take medications and I do therapy. Mental health is all around us and it’s not going away anytime soon. I help with awareness and advocacy because so much is misunderstood about it and there’s still a stigma.

    1. Yes, I believe you’re right. Majority of people have had or have mental health issues at some point and it seems the number is continuously growing. I’m sorry you experience that but it seems like you’re dealing with it in a very healthy way. And so glad you’re helping to spread awareness because yes mental health and illness is so incredibly misunderstood.

  23. Wait! Hold up! You mean to tell me that’s it’s not just one specific thing? I thought everything in life was complete binary! Nuance and complexity? HA! Who needs that am I right? Lol! I don’t know about Kenya, but over here in good ole America where I come from, we gotta find something to blame right now! And I mean, like right NOW! Hahaha! 😂

In all seriousness though, you said all of this so perfectly! I really loved that you’ve been able to find hope with what you’ve had to endure. It’s so brutally tough and taxing to the soul beyond what can be understood at times. And I hope you’re feeling loved and seen daily in your life. Because, I’m sure glad you’re here with us on this wonderful green and blue earth!

    1. Lol oh I can assure you it’s the same in Kenya too 😅

Aw thank you so much, that truly means a lot to me ❤️

  24. Please never lose hope, sweet Pooja. Love to you.

    1. Thank you, I’m trying my best to remain hopeful and focus on the silver linings.

  25. “Hope springs eternal.”

  26. Thank you for continuing to share your story and struggles, Pooja. May someone who needs a lifeline find it in your hope filled message. 💞

    1. Thank you so much and I hope so too 💞

  27. Well said Pooj. I struggled with depression, anxiety and BPD for many years. I learned more about it, got some help and have been a lot better. I struggle with the anxiety part mostly now. But Pooja is right, there is hope if you believe. There is always someone out there who will try and help.

    1. I’m so glad you got help and are better. I do struggle with anxiety too so I understand but I think there’s thankfully ways to help with symptoms.

      1. Yes there is. Just like you have mentioned in the past, meditation and deep breathing helps.

        1. Yes, those really help a lot with anxiety.

  28. I didn’t know this was happening … Thanks for bringing more awareness.

    1. Happy to share my experience, I hope it helps others out there. Thanks for commenting.

  29. Your words spoke to my soul. Such wisdom!

    1. Wow, thank you so much!

  30. I too suffer from depression and anxiety. Anxiety since the age of six years old, and depression in my late teens early adulthood. I agree. There is always hope, you just have to look for it and choose to see it!

    1. I’m so sorry to hear that but I’m glad you’re choosing to remain hopeful. Things genuinely do get better as long as we keep trying.
