What Really Grinds My Gears

It’s been a while since I did a “What Really Grinds My Gears” post but I know a lot of you do enjoy them so I’m back with another one. Because unsurprisingly I have found something else to whine about. And before you complain about my whining, this blog is called Lifesfinewhine, you knew what you were signing up for.

Your Face?

Okay, not YOUR face specifically. But people’s faces. Let me start from the top.

As you know, I watch a lot of movies and TV shows. Some say a concerning amount, I say mind your own business. Anyway, I watch older stuff and I watch newer stuff. And one major difference is that in the newer stuff, a significantly large amount of actors have clearly botoxed their faces into oblivion. And don’t even get me started with the lip filler.

If you’re staring in something historical, especially if it’s based on true events, you should not look like you’ve gotten an insane amount of work done. Maybe it doesn’t bother everyone but it absolutely bothers me. It ruins it for me when I’m watching something that is supposed to be about something from the last century or even centuries ago and all I can focus on is the insane amount of filler and botox.

And it’s not even about the way it looks, my main issue is that when you act for a living you shouldn’t be getting procedures done (botox) that literally stops you from showing emotion on your face. It’s so odd when there’s like zero proper emotions on someones face during a really emotional scene.

Final Thoughts

In general, I don’t care what people choose to do with their face. However, when your job needs you to be able to express emotions I think it’s best to go easy on the botox.

I would honestly, love to see more actors embracing aging and not sacrificing their talent to look a certain way. It really ruins TV shows and movies when everyone looks emotionless and creepy. Shoutout to Amanda Seyfried for having a forehead that actually moves when it needs to.

As always, you’re welcome to share your thoughts in the comments section below. Unless they differ from my own in any way (kidding).

I recently published my first book and would be honoured if you took a minute to check it out here.

    That part! Agreed! Lol.

    1. Thank you, glad you agree!

  2. I really don’t like Botox puffing a woman’s face up, its ridiculous. Can’t they be happy wit the way they look! Ridiculous. That song/video is so fun!

    1. Agreed, it’s so sad that they feel the need to do all that. Thanks!

      1. Have a nice weekend Pooja. 😊❤️

    1. Lol agreed, never trust anyone who agrees with him either. 😅

      1. Hehe
        Yes!!☺️🙌

  4. This was 10/10 sassy! I needed more that sassiness from you and I got it! Yes! LOL! 😂 I think you’ve said exactly what most of us have been thinking for a while now! There is so much beauty that waits to be found within aging too! As long as we choose to embrace what we might not initially expect at first.

    1. Lol thank you so much! Absolutely, aging can be beautiful and I feel like the more people try to look younger the worse they actually end up looking.

  5. So true, o agree, great post

    1. Thank you so much.

  6. Totally agree but I’ll go further. I’m a guy who likes to look at pretty girls. If you think that’s bad, tough. Problem is movies and TV makes them all look the same. I don’t want them all the same. Part of the beauty is in the variety. 🤣😎🙃

    1. Omg yes, they all literally have the same face with minor differences. It’s sort of creepy. I miss when everyone had a unique look to them.

  7. Absolutely agree, very good post

    1. Thank you so much.

  8. I hate Botox so much. It’s so unessessary, expensive, and not permanent. What I don’t understand is why ppl get Botox to look like everyone else who also get Botox. That look is not cute to me at all.

As for other procedures that require surgery, like nose surgery or jaw surgery, I’m not against it IF it has the potential to improve someone’s quality of life. I’ve had elective jaw surgery but I had an open bite and very bad TMJ. Elective being out of pocket and not something insurance would recognize as being “essential.” Despite the TMJ. Make it make sense.

    1. And there’s a direct link between botox and the likelihood to get Alzheimer’s because your brain gets confused when your face is frozen and emotionless 24/7.

Yeah, I’m going to need to do my nose at some point due to my deviated septum. I think things like that can really help people. But I feel like some people are just addicted to getting things done even when they don’t need them. It’s actually so sad.

      1. My upper lip is frozen but it’s from jaw surgery, so hopefully that doesn’t affect me down the road. It’s just my upper lip that is frozen and part of my cheek/nose.

That makes sense as to why the brain would get confused. Also, Botox is technically a toxin. Imagine injecting yourself with a toxin because of an aesthetic that is constantly chased but is never truly achievable without having to get top-up injections every few years. It sounds exhausting and looks unnatural. 🤦‍♀️

        1. I think it effects your brain more when your forehead is frozen so you should be okay.
Agreed, even small amounts of toxins is still toxins. It’s very weird to do that to your own body but people are crazy insecure.

  9. Agree with this. I’m also distracted by costumes that aren’t historically accurate for movies that look like they’re trying to be historically accurate. (Unlike movies where you know they are taking place “long ago” but it’s a reimagining.)

    1. Yes, some of the costumes are way too modern or inaccurate when they’re hoping to be accurate.

  10. I love the energy here…

    Got to speak your mind…
    Better out than in.

    1. Thanks so much, totally we have to say what’s on our mind and be honest.

  11. “Some say a concerning amount, I say mind your own business…” 😂

to all you say …so true – and the way you say it…lol, awesome… 😋

    1. Thank you so much, gotta add some humour in there 😅

  12. 🙏🌹

    Aum Shanti

  13. I agree with you. Too much vanity, too much botox on actors, and too little authenticity.

    1. Yup, exactly. It’s so sad too because they end up ruining their natural beauty in so many cases.

  14. Life in plastic, it’s fantastic
Botox is truly toxic, and not just ugly
I noticed it big time watching music videos
Embrace aging and keep smiling 😁 I say to myself even though nothing looks ideal . It’s hard to face the truth of a new self. Sigh.
One of my favorite movie makers did this to her face, looks like a totally new woman. Sad

    1. Yes, a lot of lip filler etc in music videos. I think aging is a privilege and sure not everything about it is great but I feel like messing with your face/body is not the answer. Your body is changing, it’s natural to feel a certain way about that but change is a part of life and like with everything else you’ll get used to it.
Oh no, that’s sad. A lot of the actors I liked growing up look like different people now too.

      1. i like it when women don’t dye their hair showing off how beautifully grey it turned. not everyone likes it but i think it looks amazing, especially if you wear it with confidence.
i feel like many men and women feel pressured to ‘improve’ the way they look and sometimes it means body modification which may give people a brief sensation of immediate success. when the beauticians sell their services they always promise “you will look so natural” and i guess it really helps the customers to say yes

        1. I do too, I think it looks beautiful when it’s naturally grey. True, I think more than ever people are seeking perfection but they often forget we look how we’re supposed to. Messing with that only gives us a false sense of confidence until we notice the next imperfection.

  15. Though I don’t watch movies except in theaters, I fully agree with you my friend.

    1. Yeah, it’s everywhere- even you watch very few movies a year it’s easy to notice how uncanny everyone looks.

      1. Yeah, though I mostly watch marvel and animated movies- they are looking weird by design.

        1. Yeah, it seeps into animation too.

          1. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

  16. Lip filler, ughh. I don’t want to stare at an actress and feel like she has 2 bananas for lips, no thank you very much!

    1. Yes, exactly! It’s so uncanny and weird.

  17. I agree. Botox is so wrong! Why do people insist on getting it! And lip fillers? If we were meant to have big fat lips, we’d be born with them, filling them is just crazy!

    1. I think it’s due to extreme insecurities, I don’t secure people go out and do weird stuff to their face!

  18. People deform themselves for the stupidest reasons

    1. Fake news, fake faces, fake people, fake life!! Now look – you’ve got me going. I hate this Barbie doll image and plastic Pete. I like my stuff real and authentic. Is it a right-wing Trump-induced, evangelical Christian plot to make everyone plastic??

      1. The fake tan + fake lips + botox is such a weird combo, they don’t even look human anymore.

    2. Agreed, it’s so sad.

I see quite a bit of that in some YouTube things too. It is kind of off putting when someone doesn’t look real. I have to agree with you.

    1. Oh yes, a lot of online personalities have a lot of work done too. Definitely off putting especially because a lot of them try to make “relatable” content.

  20. Oh, I agree with you 100%. Pooja. It’s so easy to spot, and their faces look plastic. Both actresses, and actors are pushing the limits to look younger. One would think that by now, plastic surgery would be more advanced. 🫣

    1. It’s so uncanny, I miss when people embraced looking like themselves- looking human. I feel like if anything the plastic surgery has gotten worse, people look ridiculous 😭

      1. They do, Pooja, and some look creepy. 😱

  21. I too would like to see more people (and not just actors) accept aging and not all become more or less unnatural, with tight skin, fish eyes, puffy cheeks, and lips enhanced artificially to excess.

    1. Absolutely, I hope the trend dies down. People are starting to look so unnatural with all those unnecessary enhancements.

      1. 👍👍👍
Thanks a lot for your kind reply

        1. My pleasure 😊

  22. What I’ve also noticed is that everyone in Hollywood is getting the same faces because certain procedures have become “trendy.”

    1. Yup, influencers are getting it too. Everyone literally just looks the same. It’s unnerving.

  23. embrace aging.
    not a chance
    sic
    lmao

  24. Valid point I would say. There are a few very popular stars who have refused to mess with their faces and I say good for them !

    1. Yup, I’m glad some of them have decided to embrace their natural faces!

  25. Good work! The right kind of work. I, too, see images and wonder why they no longer look natural, though I know why. And injection-frozen faces are also simply hard to bear. Blame it on the industry, of course. Though natural looks and expressions, also diction, are reasons I find myself often watching films from other countries where evidently folk are allowed to grow older. Hope you’re coping all right with the lack of Canadian cold.

    1. It’s unnerving to see, frozen and overfilled faces are everywhere these days. Yeah, definitely the industry plus social media, I think that makes people more insecure about their looks and makes them way to look “perfect.” True, a lot of international stars still have their natural face which is great. Haha thanks, I’m trying my best not to go crazy with all this sun and heat!

  26. It’s so horrendous how obsessed we’ve become (collectively! ) with looks and vanity! I miss seeing real faces, hair, nails and bodies too. People are wasting so much money to look the same. In a world where insecurity is encouraged to keep the beauty sector rich, embracing my natural beauty feels like rebellion sometimes 🤭🤣

    1. Absolutely, people waste literally thousands on these things on a monthly basis. I feel like social media is largely to blame, it’s all about showing off now. Embracing natural beauty is for sure rebellion against the norms- which is why we have to keep at it 😉😅

  27. It may be why I once watched a lot of British media instead of US.. that I liked that not everyone had perfect teeth or had to reduce themselves to emotions they could show white remaining young and pretty. I do think you’re right about historical shows especially, but really, most shows could do with a wider variety of humanity and various possibilities of beauty. Also there are celebrities I’m tired of hearing about and if they keep de-aging themselves, I worry I’ll have to hear about them for the rest of my life. 🙂

    1. *while (although, maybe a Freudian typo?) 🙂

      1. An accurate one in some cases…

    2. So true, I was rewatching Fleabag and loved how human everyone looked- their faces expressed their emotions so well. Omg yes and then it’s just them using an insane amount of filters and photoshop and look totally like their age in real life 😅

      1. Another show I’ve had on my list! I thought I would have gotten to more of them by now. :)) I think it’s interesting a few well-known actresses have made statements to the effect that they want to keep the character of their faces as devotion to their craft for one thing, and example for another.

        1. Fleabag is SO good, you’ll love it. Yeah, I’ve noticed that and I think it’s great they’re secure enough to do that. Especially considering their craft does rely on them being able to convey their emotions clearly through their expressions.

          1. Very much so!

  28. I never really noticed before, but now I will be watching for it, lol. It is probably more important than ever to distinguish a person from AI .

    1. Haha yes and it’s becoming weirdly impossible to do so these days.

  29. The way you write it, so bitingly, is really very funny.

    1. Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the post.

  30. Yes, laughing out loud here!

    1. Haha glad to hear it!

  31. You’re on fire here, Pooja! I loved, nodded and laughed over the boldness in your statements, which are right on. I think it’s a symptom of society’s pressures on women to look perfect that lead to so many of these procedures and treatments that actually take away some of the natural beauty and character that comes from age. Look at someone like Helen Mirren – stunning!

The humour was high in this post… really enjoyed it!

    1. Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the post and also that you got what I was trying to say. I agree, there’s so much pressure for women to look young and beautiful all the time even though it’s impossible to look perfect all the time. True, Meryl Streep too- she’s looks beautiful regardless of her age!

      1. My pleasure! Yes, absolutely, there’s nothing quite like those “laugh lines” when they smile. As you say, how can an actor do their craft when one of their main tools, their face, is deprived of its capability to communicate emotion? Hollywood is so misguided, and women pay the price.

        1. Completely agree, Hollywood seems so incredibly toxic. It’s sad these already gorgeous women feel the need to mess with their face.

  32. Hehe! Sass on fire. Love it. Totally agree.

    1. Haha thanks so much!

  33. Here’s cheers to mobile foreheads and all of us aging with grace! Sending my best wishes for the end of the year, and may 2026 be super wonderful for you! Linda xx

    1. Absolutely, cheers to that! Thank you so much and wishing you the same! 💗

  34. Drives me crazy too!!! It’s over the top and and people don’t realize that it is botulism diluted down of course but still I have seen clients suffer from neurological issues from it too. On the other hand I would LOVE to see some of these scars of the wars that my children gave me hahaha dissipate but you know, i don’t have an empty check book, time or the wherewithal to throw money down the drain. Besides my uncle was one of the top 10 lawyers in the world for personal injury and in the day you could sue for botch jobs which he saw many and he wouldn’t allow us to do any face procedures period. In the mean time, I started a red light and use products and an occasional facial and eat well and take supplements but have alas… it’s a losing battle but life is in the growing and acceptance of each stage! xx

    1. It definitely does cause neurological issues and research has shown a link between botox and Alzheimer’s because our brain needs our face to move in order to understand how we’re feeling about something. I think that’s great you’re doing other skincare stuff, retinol is really good for anti-aging as well but of course at the end of the day we all age and look different over time.

  35. I can’t believe I missed this post (these are my favs) = omg, YES!!! & LOLOL … I could name so many … what has been getting under my craw lately are people reporting devastating news with a smile or somehow a little excited (what??!) … someone needs to train them on how to express emotion appropriately and at the correct time (lol)! You kill me with your observations (haha)!

    1. Omg yesss and I think that’s due to botox too, they can’t properly express sadness or grief anymore so they say everything with a smile!!

  36. At my age, 71, I strive to look my best, not young. Young is relevant and it doesn’t last forever with any amount of work.

    1. I think that’s the important thing, taking time to make an effort but not fixating on looking young.
