Scattered Words By Tremaine Loadholt Review

About the author

A versatile Southeastern writer, Tremaine L. Loadholt has been published in literary journals, anthologies, and magazines, and has also published four books: Pinwheels and Hula Hoops, Dusting for Fingerprints, A New Kind of Down, and Séduire. She lives with her pleasantly silent Red-Footed Tortoise, Zumi. Her artistic expressions can be found at A Cornered Gurl, Substack, and Medium.

Summary

In Scattered Words: Poems for Jernee Timid Loadholt, the author wants you, the reader, to experience Jernee in totality and understand why she has lost the greatest companion she has ever known.
If you have ever grieved the loss of a pet, many of these poems will not only resonate with you, they will set up holding spaces in your mind, crawl into your heart, and retreat only when they have been commanded to do so.
You will laugh, cry, nod in agreement, and reminisce about your furry family member(s) and how they have become your strength. Grief is not linear, and every creeping moment it decides to invade your heart, there is a poem in this book to greet it.
In Scattered Words…, Tremaine celebrated, lamented, grieved, loved, and released Jernee Timid Loadholt. Every day, she will probably do these things again—not necessarily in that order.
If you have never met a dog who had the uncanny ability to be more memorable than some of the people you know, with this book of poems, you will have your chance.

My Thoughts On Scattered Words By Tremaine Loadholt

Scattered Words By Tremaine Loadholt Review

I’ve been following Tremaine Loadholt for a very long time on her blog and have always been a fan of her writing. I reviewed her book Séduire some time ago as well. You can read the full review here. I wanted to also share my review of Scattered Words: Poems for Jernee Timid Loadholt.

Those of you that follow her will know how important, Jernee, Tre’s dog was to her. She was a big part of her life and absolutely loved. Unfortunately, she had to say goodbye to Jernee a few months ago and of course, as anyone with pets will know, saying goodbye to them is never easy. It comes with a lot of grief and pain.

Scattered Words by Tremaine Loadholt takes the reader through the emotions and experiences that Tre had with Jernee. We see Jernee through her eyes, the good moments as well as the painful ones. The bond they had, the love they shared for one another.

The book is beautifully written and put together. It allows the reader to glimpse into the intertwined lives of Tremaine and Jernee. It’s a tribute not only to Jernee but all pets that enhance our lives and bring us so many joyful memories.

Poems That Stood Out To Me

I wanted to share some thoughts on specific poems that stood out to me. I’ve said this before but I have a harder time reviewing poetry collections. It’s hard to share an overall review when each poem brings something different. So, I felt sharing some specific poems and my thoughts on them would help.

One of the poems that stood out to me is, better. It’s a short poem but I think embodies what Jernee meant for Tre. She made things better for her. In a world that is not always easy to exist in, with life and its ups and downs, having a constant in your life really helps decrease the burden. Jernee clearly brought a lot of happiness into Tre’s life and we can clearly see that connection that they had with poems such as this one.

Another poem I wanted to talk about is, Care Package. It’s a reminder that humans are social creatures and that in times of grief, having people by your side that care can make a huge difference. I’ve been reading The Body Keeps The Score. And one of the biggest deciding factor on whether something becomes PTSD is whether we have people around us to comfort us during a difficult time. Care Package is really touching because Tre is able to see how loved she is by those around her and how they’re willing to be there for her during difficult moments. It also shows how Jernee left an impact on others too.

Finally, I want to highlight the final poem in the collection, learning to love the silence. Throughout the book we see Tre going through the different stages of grief. In this poem we see her moving towards acceptance. Learning how to continue living her life and accepting Jernee’s passing. Understanding that Jernee is in a better place now, at peace.

Overall

I thought this book was an incredible read. It’s moving, powerful, and expressive. We experience the authors love, grief, pain and so much more. And it’s a fantastic tribute to the life of Jernee Timid Loadholt who was loved and whose memory will live on.

If you like poetry collections and know what it’s like to grieve a pet, I would recommend this one. I believe it would be relatable and help others who are going through something similar or have been through something similar in the past.

  1. Aww, Pooja! Thank you so very much! I went to my friend’s house today in Huntersville to visit with her and her mom, and we talked about Jernee and had a few laughs about her, too. She would’ve loved seeing them and spending time with the kids if she were still alive.

I appreciate you reviewing Scattered Words, and for such a keen look into what the book is and can be for others. Thank you again. 🙏🏾🩵

The Body Keeps The Score is honestly so life changing. And yes, dancing is another way to keep the bad stuff away and actually works so well for people with PTSD too!

  5. Pets are like family, and to lose them is devastating. My cats that crossed the bridge will always be in my heart. Thank you for your review and featuring Tremaine.

    1. I so agree, it’s really difficult to lose a pet. They really stay in our heart forever. Happy to do so, this poetry collection was really moving and well written.

  7. What a thoughtful and beautiful review of Tre’s heartfelt tribute! Thank you.

    1. Happy to share the review, I really loved the poetry collection. It was so raw, honest, and touching.

  8. A specifically enthusiastic review. Great work! Hannah, my palindromic pet, was with me for nineteen years. I think we were both foundlings. Cats have a way of owning us, but both ways pet relationships regardless of species I think get through. Broken up to have pets go. You highlight all that effectively from and for the poems you’re reviewing. I hope you have a good week.

    1. Thanks so much. Haha totally agree, cats have away of doing that. And pets really do become like family, it’s hard to say goodbye. Thank you, have a good week too.

  9. Wonderful review, Pooja. I’ve wanted to read this, but also hesitate, for all the reasons one might guess. trE’s writing is so deep and real that I’m sure I’ll love the book when I get there!

    1. 🙏🏾🩵 I understand, believe me, I do

    2. I totally understand, I’m sure reading about the passing of a beloved pet isn’t easy when you have a pet yourself. I’m sure you will love it when you’re able to read it too!

  10. What a wonderful review of trE’s book on Jernee, Pooja. I loved that little dog and how trE brought us into her life with all of the love and care she gave to her and Jernee returned! Our dogs and cats if I might add are out heart and soul and we have sadly ushered each one to the rainbow bridge with breaking hears and going the very last mile. You did a great job highlighting her beautiful journey and book. She is missed dearly❣️❤️💕

    1. I was just telling her on her blog that Jernee ended up being loved by this community too because she always shared posts about her and we felt like we knew her. I totally agree, our pets are such a huge part of our life and mean the world to us. It’s never easy to say goodbye. Thank you ❤️

      1. That’s exactly right, she sure was. There was a void when she left. They sure are so much part of us. I often keep them in my living room for 4 days before saying goodbye for good and we have ample time to grieve. Sounds like it could be a good chapter in your sequel with Lizzy dies.. 😂 We have a ceremony etc. Getting a new animal always helps too or I swear I’d never get over them. 🌹💕❤️

        1. Aw that’s so true, it helps to have some time to grieve and really say goodbye!

          1. For sure💕💗

  11. Aww. What a touching and incredibly lovely review. For an incredible poetry book. I’m so happy for these good feels your review emanates, Pooja blessings.
