Blogging Vs Social Media

Blogging Vs Social Media

Blogging Vs Social Media

As you may or may not know, I am active both on social media and on WordPress. I started out blogging but expanded to the world of social media. And although I am not as active on my social pages as I am with blogging, I am still active enough. Especially these days. I’m trying to be a lot more active and post regularly on social media as well. Those of you that follow my Instagram may have noticed that. Since I have been more active on social media and obviously I’m very active here too, I thought I would compare the two. And talk about what I like and dislike about blogging vs social media.

So here are my thoughts about blogging vs social media and the pros and cons of both:

Blogging Can Be More Expressive

blogging vs social media

When it comes to blogging vs social media, I feel like blogging allows me to be much more expressive. Blogging was created to share content. Any type of content. I have so many many more options on what to share on my blog compared to social media. I feel like when it comes to social media people don’t really read your caption or anything. They just look at pictures and videos and leave likes. With blogging I can write so much and be really open.

Social Media Can Be Superficial

blogging vs social media

I have noticed that social media is so much more superficial than blogging. You have to look a certain way to get more views and likes. Whereas when it comes to blogging, people actually care about the content. Like I mentioned on the previous point. It’s not just about images or videos. People read your posts and leave meaningful comments most of the time. I think the main reason I love blogging and have stuck to it is because of that. It’s like I have a genuine connection with people here.

I also think social media can be really superficial in that it concentrates so much on looks and perfection. You just continuously see these highly edited images and videos all the time. People are so fake on social media. Whereas with blogging, you see so much reality. People are so much more open on here. At least in my experience. And I think seeing those altered images and videos on social media can be super damaging for your mental health and can lead to depression and anxiety. Whereas, blogging has had the opposite effect on my mental health. It’s really helped boost my confidence and feel better about myself.

Social Media Is More Inclusive

How To Improve Mental Readiness Despite A Mental Health Disorder

One thing I like about social media is that I find it to be more inclusive. As I mentioned on an earlier post, WordPress has features that it doesn’t offer in so many countries. Like the whole of Africa (an entire continent) doesn’t have so payment options on WordPress since they only accept Stripe or PayPal right now. Only Stripe on free plans.

With social media, I find that most things are offered around the world. I don’t feel excluded in that way. If there was one thing, I with WordPress would be more inclusive. I love being able to connect with people around the world through blogging, and it sucks that some of my friends left due to WordPress not being inclusive and having no options for the countries they live in.

Conclusion

I feel like this would have been a good topic to expand on YouTube but who has the energy lol. Anyway, when it comes to blogging vs social media, both have their pros and cons. But personally I prefer blogging. I find that it allows me to truly express myself. And the connections I form here are genuine unlike social media. I want to be remembered for my writing not my social media posts so I thinking blogging is a good way to go for me personally.

What are your thoughts on blogging vs social media? Do you prefer blogging or social media? Or so you have another preference altogether? Let me know in the comments below because I would love to hear from you or simply stop by and say hi!

  1. I guess every platform has its advantage and disadvantage. I really need to do more research on different platforms to be able to have the whole picture. I only hope that instagram has more conspicuous comment section. Usually all the comments are relegated to a place, where it is hard to read the older comments.

    1. Yes, each platform has its pros and cons. I think it mainly depends on what your goals are.
Unfortunately, it’s the same with comments for most social media platforms.

  2. Insightful. I do social media for the restaurant I work for and I just cannot be bothered with it for the poetry. I do have a facebook page, but Insta mine is private. I would have to doa separate one for poetry and I am already online so much for work I decided to skip it.

    1. Yes, I understand. It’s exhausting being online too often.

  3. I have thought of WordPress as social media, Pooja although they are distinctly different. My blog and IG account are not linked. Great thoughts, Pooja. ❤️

    1. Thank you and yes they’re different but each has it’s own advantages ❤️

  4. You make a great point that blogging can be so much more expressive and it feels more real than a photo on social media does. Like you, I use both WordPress and social media. I love IG and Tik tok for sharing some photography/reels and Twitter has been my main author platform for years. You definitely need a fine balance though so you don’t get sucked into the virtual and often fake world of social media.

    1. Thanks so much. Yes, I love social media too but WordPress is just much more real. And easy to use because people actually care about the content. I agree, it’s all about balance when it comes to social media.

  5. Good points Pooja although I’m not sure which I prefer yet. I’ve been meaning to use social media more to promote my blogs but I’m not so sure if my social media followers care to spend time reading my blogs 😊.

    1. That’s fair, sometimes our social media audience is different than our blog. Thank you 😊

    2. 😂 exactly. i think these are two different virtual life that priorities different things. i don’t think so a typical instagrammer is a reader. all they do is swipes

  6. I’m so glad your confidence is high from Blogging. Social media can be rough on your self esteem. I perfer blogging. People who read are better than those who like filtered and altered pictures. LOL

    1. This! 🙌 I agree with @Belladonna that social media can be rough on one’s self-esteem. The anonymity that comes with blogging on WP and being part of this larger community within the blogosphere definitely has its advantages. I feel happier blogging than I do bouncing back and forth between social media platforms!

      1. I’m with u to it Hilary! This environment makes me happy and calm. Social media is a frustrating MESS!!!!

        1. Absolutely! It’s a huge headache for sure. A frustrating mess indeed! 😕

          1. Ugggh for sure!

    2. Thanks and yes absolutely! I feel like crap if I spend too much time on social media especially IG.

  7. It’s like comparing apples and oranges, I love apples while my husband loves oranges. Who needs iron? – me, and who needs vitamin C – him. It really depends on what you are looking for… Sometimes all you need is fruit salad, so don’t discount this option as well

    1. Yeah, both have their pros and cons and I enjoy using both but tend to prefer blogging. But of course, to each their own.

      1. yup, i see them as serving completely different purposes. two different crowds are attracted to the one or the other. i started insta for sales mostly, and WP for venting. it’s changed of course but primarily this is how it goes

  8. Agree with you Pooja that social media is all about superficiality and blogging is all about originality. Moreover, social media posts mostly relate to images and videos, whereas blogging is normally about content. Blogging involves a sort of creativity that is lacking in social media. Blogging also demands hard work.
Nevertheless, both have their own pros and cons, and we cannot pass a definite judgment on either of the two. All depends on their respective usage.

    1. Yes, there are obviously some great pages on social media but the majority of it is quite superficial. I enjoy the authenticity of blogging.

    2. i think creativity happens at both places just in different format.

  9. Interesting observations by one in the trenches!

  10. As a new blogger I am really enjoying writing and sharing my thoughts, feelings and ideas. For me, it is much more expressive. I feel like those people who choose to follow my blog do so because they enjoy it versus the people who make comments on social media. I am often appalled by the types of comments I see people write on social media. It is like they feel safe saying whatever is on their mind despite the fact that it might be offensive to others. They hide behind the protection of the computer screen.

    1. Yes, I feel the same way. People actually care about content when it comes to blogging and most people are pretty polite. Social media can be quite toxic and some of the comments are truly awful.

  11. I definitely prefer blogging as it is ideal for total expression. I really enjoy blogging.

    1. Yes, I do too. I think it’s much better for content creators.

  12. I love your confidence! I prefer blogging to social media, you can go so much deeper! Just my preference, hugs, C

    1. Thanks so much and I feel that way too! 😊

  13. Yes, exactly social media is just too fake whereas blogging is very real and genuine. But, even here I find people who just tap the like button without even reading the blog.
For me, social media platforms are good too but they’re very superficial (as you’ve mentioned) and only for the perfect pics and videos whereas on WordPress we can freely share our imperfections and the best part is nobody judges us!!

    1. Yeah, I feel like WP is much more genuine for sure. The content creators create real content.

    2. indeed. bloggers are usually writes/read while social media more into engagement. the max sec of attention on social media is 3 secs. can you believe it?

  14. I have a Facebook author page. I intended to use the page to promote my book, but I turned it off after I got delayed completing my book. I reactivated the page recently, but Facebook has changed how it functions and I don’t have the time at the moment to become familiar with everything. My initial reason for my WordPress site was to publish my book in serial form, but I have learned that may not be good idea. It has been a good learning experience so far.

    1. Social media can be a good way to get your work out there. However, it has its pros and cons.

  15. Pooja, I enjoy blogging and globally connecting with other bloggers. I like your entire message and how we are open with one another on WordPress. The encouragement, prayers, conversations, etc., are wonderful and I cannot imagine not blogging. Thank you for sharing.

    1. I feel that way too. This community is so positive and wonderful. I have had a lot of positive experiences and I hope to continue blogging for the foreseeable future.

  16. Blogging somehow feels more personal. The acceptance in this community is humbling.

    Great points Pooja 🤍

    1. Yes, blogging is much more personal. It’s nice to connect with bloggers on that level. I feel like social media lacks that connection. Thanks 😊

      1. Pleasure always Pooja 😊

  17. On Social media I definitely feel the need to post the best pics and when I blog it is more raw.

    1. I feel the same way.

  18. Great points, Pooja.
I am fine with both in equal measure.

    1. Thanks so much and thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  19. I love your confidence! I prefer blogging to social media, you can go so much deeper in blogging .Social media can be rough on your self esteem. I perfer blogging

  20. It’s funny that you wrote about this topic because it was on my mind tonight. I agree that social media is more inclusive, but it can be exhausting. Who has the time? Exactly…. Who has the time to be everywhere all the time? That’s gotta be exhausting. I do however find blogging to be a bit isolating on its own which is why I turn to Twitter to interact with more people.

    1. Yes, it can definitely be exhausting. It just drains the energy out of you over time. Twitter isn’t too bad but I find Instagram to be the worst.

      1. This is why I don’t use an IG app. Even then I can still access IG through a browser and it just makes me feel like crap afterwards. I’ve never walked away thinking, “Wow! IG changed my life for the better! I’m glad I used it today!”

And this goes for all social media platforms. If my newsfeed was entirely happy, uplifting things, and it was filtered in the most perfect way possible so I wouldn’t be triggered or annoyed, I honestly think it would have the opposite effect and annoy me even more d/t the whole toxic positivity thing. Anything that takes a toll on my mental health is a no for me.

        1. Yeah, if it affects your mental health you obviously shouldn’t be on those platforms. Personally, I’m okay if I’m on there for a little bit every day but if I spend more than an hour on any social media platform I start feeling exhausted.

          1. Yeah, I have no self-control. 1 hour turns into 5 hours if I am not careful 😶 It’s good that you know your limits and what works for you.

            1. Yeah, it’s easy to get addicted to SM. The only reason I have self-control is because I get too busy with work to roll for hours lol 😂

  21. I have not used social media much. Back in the day, I did try FB and a bit of Twitter. But I find WordPress much more satisfying. Thank you for this lovely post.

    1. I also tried FB and twitter in ancient times. It just made me angry and hungry for an honest debate, but it was all about finding a winner, a winner who was not even the best Dictator of the week but the best Machiavellian which is why I found your modified quotation “… fight, flight, freeze or fawn” interesting. (I took a quick peek at your website[maybe read more later]).

      1. I can relate. I have bloodied fingers from my FB and Twitter wars. I feel honoured that you dropped by my blog. May you find a worthy opponent in me as we debate to our heart’s content, en-garde!

    2. Yes, I find blogging more satisfying too. I just feel like bloggers connect on a deeper level and actually care about content.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

      1. There is something different between WordPress and social media. I haven’t yet been able to pin point it. But it is better.

        1. I think for me, the main difference is the community.

          1. I agree. Makes sense. On twitter my community was bots.

            1. Yeah, that happens a lot on social media.

  22. I suck at social media😭 like I have tried so hard to be active on even my blog’s Instagram page but I just can’t. I had twitter, I abandoned it. I tried to be active on Tiktok this year but I can already feel my insterest dissipating. I prefer blogging cause like you said, you feel like you’re really making genuine connections here but on social media, everyone is just mindlessly scrolling so it doesn’t feel fun.

    1. Lol, I so understand. It’s so hard to stay active on social media. I used to post daily on TikTok too but I haven’t posted in months. It’s just too much.

  23. I find social media takes up a lot of time. I’ve found great videos and posts on social media that teach me things, but a lot of time is spent sifting through all the posts. I’ve also seen a lot of disrespect – people don’t hold back in their criticism, which is terrible. It might be the medium – videos are easier to watch and easier to comment on. Blogging takes reading and more focus, so even the quality of comments is better.

    1. Yes, social media is extremely time consuming. And you have to be active constantly to grow. Whereas with blogging, you can grow on your blog with much less activity and good content.

  24. its a difficult one to answer with social media it takes time to build a audience, and you are playing by the platforms rules, blogging there is more freedom to express what u feel about your topic

    1. Yes, true. Blogging definitely gives you more freedom and you’re likely to grow no matter what niche you are in.

  25. I just put my blogs out on social media. I started a blog to advertise my books but I don’t really do that anymore. I just enjoy writing. I’ve been blogging for 8 years now. Sometimes it becomes a chore and gets in the way of my writing projects. But mostly I enjoy it.

    1. Yes, social media can be time consuming. And so can blogging sometimes.

  26. This post has come at the right moment because I am trying to expand my blog to other social media platforms. Till now I have only been using Facebook and Instagram to stay connected to my dance students. I am old fashioned and don’t really like to make reels on trendy dance songs or run after desperately to increase my followers. But I definitely want to increase my reach.
You said it correctly that handling many social media accounts is exhausting. Right now my other challenges are understand payment methods and having an official email. If you have any suggestions or have a post about it then do forward me their links. It would help me a lot.

    1. Yes, social media is time consuming and that can be exhausting. For payment, I usually prefer PayPal since that’s what most people use. And I think WordPress offers custom email addresses.

  27. negative shit like flash mobs and peer pressure. blog all the way fa me.

    1. Yes, a lot of peer pressure on social media.

      1. for some. not me thankfully.

      2. how s kenya today Pooja?

        1. Can’t complain.

          1. sure you can.

            1. I can but I shouldn’t/won’t.

  28. It’s easy to miss stuff on social media if you’re not online 24/7. Likewise, it’s easy for people to miss what you post. Why struggle to post anything worth reading if hardly anyone I ‘know’ will see it? Apart from family and friends, I mostly lurk on social media. Occasionally.

    1. True, and it’s hard to grow on social media if you’re not constantly active. I stopped posting on social media for many months but recently started getting into it again. It’s a good source of traffic for my blog so I try to keep up with it.

  29. It’s hard to add something when you have already talked about so many things in your blog.
    Still, I can try.
I think I saw you first here, and then I tried contacting you on IG. I thought you will never reply, because you were already pretty huge blogger then.
Still you replied to a stranger and helped him, and I’m grateful.
Back then, I had many doubts, but you helped me patiently (I still have doubts).
Social media is full of fakes, but then there’s a genuine person like you there. I was scared to talk to you (not because you have horns or anything), but I thought I am selfish to ask all those questions.
    .
I agree WP is more relaxed. Here, I’ve seen your real side, I see you are a lovely soul and I can never guess that on social media. On social media people generally see that much as someone are showing them.

I’ve seen a person with fun reels, but I come to know the real you through WP.
It was possible to call you my friend and favorite blogger because of WP.
    .
I think words connect. Your words surely have connected 25k+. People love to read it and they will remember it for long. I am sure, reels, videos are not that impactful. Plus here people are more sensible. On social media, I have seen so many irrelevant comments.
If people are choosing to read your work and then if they are dropping such comments, then they care.
    .
Looking forward to your video on YT.

    1. Try beating me a long comments haha…
Even Chat GPT will be tired.

      1. *at, ahh needs editing comments option. You are the best blogger here, can’t you do something about it?

        1. They already kicked me off WordPress once I’m not messing with them again 😂

    2. Thank you so much. I get a lot of DM’s from bloggers and am usually happy to help if I can. I agree, social media doesn’t show the real you. You only see a certain side. Whereas with blogging you can truly connect with the other person.

      1. Well you are humble 🙂

  30. I do agree with you 👍

  31. I started out on social media then later on joined WordPress.
On social media one can write numerous short posts ( they don’t have to be entirely true ) most especially on twitter.
On WordPress however you have to write more for the readers to get a clear picture of what you are talking about. There is better accountability when blogging, so blogs are more factual* than many posts on social media.

    1. Yes, so true. I think with blogging, people are held more accountable for the content they share. It’s much more reliable than the random stuff you see on social media.

  32. Thanks! I’m not on social media and often wonder what/if I’m missing out. It was nice to hear your thoughts and experiences.

    1. Thanks. I think social media has its pros and cons. It’s fun but also exhausting.

  33. I am new to the blogging world so am utilizing my social media to lead people to my blog. It’s a slow go but I am having a lot of fun trying to promote my blog!

    1. As long as you’re having fun that’s awesome!

  34. I share a lot of your views on blogging vs social media. Since returning to my blog, I’ve noticed I spend a lot less time scrolling Twitter, for example. (I find I become cynical when I spend any amount of time on that platform and don’t like that about myself. So duh, close the app, Steve!). And while I haven’t built up the kind of following you have, I really do enjoy the interaction when people make comments on my posts. It’s like a conversation with a friend. It brings different perspectives, which help me to expand my understanding.

    1. Yes, Twitter can be a bit depressing. And absolutely, it’s nice to connect with other bloggers. And actually connect, not the kind of superficial connection you usually find on social media.

  35. I generally use my blog for things I wish to talk more in-depth about, while social media is for more day-to-day thoughts and musings. I think it works out well that way.

    1. Yes, I think both have something to offer and blogging is definitely better for more in-depth posts.

  36. What makes blogging not social media? What would Instagram be called? The fast food blogging?

Anyway, there’s less people blogging so it’s more likely that people will see my content, even if they don’t like it.

Instagram and sites like that are better for placing pictures and making portfolios but they’re largely unemotional with that.

But, I mean, in the country I’m in, people are largely unemotional and will get very stressed when you show them anything that isn’t happy or will have a great vengeful but happy ending. Instagram and a lot of fast-paced SM are very similar to US culture(very controversial topic).

But, overall, I like blogging because the people here can stand more than just happiness and I feel like they’re not just mindlessly scrolling through my content and other content and their algorithm won’t ignore me.

    1. As well, since most of the people are older here and calmer and not spiteful or really competing that hard, they are wayyy more mature and easier to be around.

I also like the content. Instagram was forever ruined when they added reels. Any SM site that adds reels instantly is nowhere to be touched. It’s also annoying how all SM instantly becomes the same because they want money and they end up losing safe spaces only to get people bullied.

      1. Yeah, way more mature and rational people here.

        Agreed, reels destroyed IG.

    2. Yes, that’s true. It’s easier to be seen on WordPress than social media platforms. And I find it easier to be honest/real on here more than on social media. It’s definitely filled with more toxic positivity where it’s like “look at my perfect life” whereas blogging is more personal.

      1. And easier to find great people here too! ☺️

  37. I wrote about social media today! I’m very worried about how it’s affecting our youth. In the US the CDC issued a report with alarming stats: Most teen girls (57%) felt persistently sad or hopeless in 2021, which is double the rate for teen boys (29%). Nearly one in three teen girls seriously considered attempting suicide.

My daughter grew up with social media and suffers from depression. I wonder if things would be better for her without it? Her therapist had her limit the time she spends on it now and I see a positive change.

    1. Wow that’s incredibly sad. But I’m not surprised. I was diagnosed with clinical depression as a teen and I think some of that did have to do with social media. I think social media just has a way of making us feel less than which can be really damaging. Not to mention how many eating disorders girls develop because of what they see as “normal” on social media.

I’m glad your daughter is getting better after spending less time on social media. I took a break from it completely a while back and now I’m mostly on it for work which has helped my mental health.

      1. She ended up with an eating disorder too. She used to look at those “thigh gap” photos when she was a teen. I’m glad you’re doing well. You’re using social media for a purpose.

        1. Yeah, I remember when that whole “thigh gap” phase became popular. The sad thing is most of the celebs with the “thigh gap” were just photoshopping their pictures.
          Thank you.

          1. I didn’t know that!

  38. I prefer blogging and writing on Substack over just being on social media. I use social media mostly to share what I have written on my blog or Substack. I also enjoy the better connection I get with blogging.

  39. Social media has changed so much over the years. It’s really difficult to gain new followers who aren’t spam accounts. Plus I feel like with social media you must post new content daily if not by the hour unlike with blogs. Blogging has its own issues, yet it’s definitely lesser of the two evils in my opinion at least.

    1. True, especially Instagram. It’s pretty dead right now. I’ve noticed that the only social media pages that grow are those that post multiple times a day. Not everyone has the time or energy to do that. With blogging it’s easier to grow once you have a good strategy even if you don’t post often. It certainly is far from perfect but like you said, the lesser of two evils.

  40. I agree! I rarely post on social media because I feel more pressure to keep it short and perfect. I want to look good, wear nice clothes, have the right angle, and post on the right occasion. But with blogging, I concentrate on writing something well, yes, but there is less pressure to look good or to care about likes. I want people to read my blog of course, but it something that feels more like a personal project, and I feel less pressure. Not everyone will read/see it, and it takes longer for people to put in the time and read, and maybe engage, and I like that.

When I spend a few hours on social media, I feel unhappy and like wasted time afterwards, but I feel accomplished whenever I publish a blog post after a few hours of writing.

    1. I can resonate and relate with your comment Perusing Muse😍🙌

    2. I feel the same way. With social media you sort of have to keep up an appearance. And look a certain way. Whereas there is much more freedom with blogging and you can be imperfect but still enjoy creating content.

  41. Bravo Pooja you have outdone yourself here in describing the variations between Blogging and Social Media. As a Fashion Blogger I can agree with your view on blogging that it is indeed expressive and it allows you to fully open your chest which is why I love it more than social media visibility. I am less active on some social media platforms lately but I do pop some days. If I were to choose between blogging and social media, I gladly take BLOGGING🙌

    1. Thank you so much. Yeah there is so much more freedom in your content with blogging while there is more pressure on social media to just follow trends.

  42. I enjoy blogging. I rarely post on social media. Social media can be a bit messy at times, but I personally think that blogging is how and where I can express myself without feeling judged about what I write and share. I can be more creative in my writing, and I can change it any time I want to, but as for social media, it’s neither here nor there. Great post. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend.

    1. Yes, social media is a lot messier. I can express myself best through blogging too. Thanks and have a great weekend too.

  43. Thankyou for sharing this wonderful post. Although both have their pros and cons blogging is way more expressive and people are more likely to be them true selves. Platforms such as Instagram and Twitter are worlds within the world that can become out of control very easily over a throw away comment or picture taken out of context and everyone just jumps on the bandwagon without finding out any facts first and is very much as you say superficial

    1. Thank you. Yes, that’s exactly how I feel. Social media just seems so much more superficial. And fake. With blogging, you can be real.

  44. I stand by your opinions. I love blogging because I can be myself here. I deactivated my Instagram acc because it was draining my mental health. Team blogging all the way!

    1. I feel the same way. It’s so much easier to be real on WordPress compared to socials. Good for you, that’s awesome!

  45. I enjoy WP better over any social media sites. It’s great for conversing back and forth and making genuine connections instead of having political trolls and bots everywhere. I do use Instagram to post poetry and some images, but thats it. And I adjusted my feed to only see poetry, art, and photography. Any other social media is just my posts from WP being reposted on those sites.

    1. Yeah, I hate the trolls on social media and have found there to be mostly nice people on WordPress which is shocking for an online platform. I use IG too but am also particular about what I see.

  46. Hi Pooja, thank you for following back.
I am just super new to this blogging thing, but honestly, in terms of expressing my ideas, I like blogging a great deal much better than social media.
The problem with social media is just that we are stuck everywhere and technically when we write, for example, sentences are limited and audiences are too wide.
But I still can use social media to promote content and engage positively or cope with new trends.😊

    1. Yes, social media is a good tool for marketing. But when it comes to content, blogging is much better for us to express ourselves fully. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  47. Blogging and social media have both been a part of my life for a long time. It seems like as I get older, I’m leaning more towards blogging. Social Media seems a little “fake” at times. Blogging is about as real as it gets! I leave the superficial to the youngsters. lol

    1. I feel that way too, lol. I like social media to an extent but blogging really brings me a lot more joy.

  48. The expressive aspect of blogging works for me Pooja. Social media constrains as a rule because owners need to rule, to control and limit based on its billion user base combined with a general narrative not conducive to free speech. Bloggers can speak freely; we own our platforms. Excellent points here.

    1. Thank you. Yes, I understand what you mean. It’s much easier for us to truly express ourselves on blogging platforms than social media.

  49. I love social media

    1. That’s great. What do you like about it most?

  50. Great comparisons Pooja~! I prefer blogging as well. There is so much to keep up with .. it’s a lot! ❣️

    1. It’s a lot but also feels like a real community 😊

      1. You are so right about that indeed! ❣️

  51. I completely agree with you. Blogging is far better than social media. People here are nice as compared to people on social media.

    1. Yes, I think so too.

  52. I love this
    I love blogging

    1. Thank you so much.

  53. it’s interesting to many people are sharing their thought on social media. for me, social media putting to much pressure to create a content while blogging helps you to pour out the content. more relaxing

    1. Yes, I think that’s true. With blogging it’s less about the quantity.

  54. I started curating my feed on Twitter about a year ago, populating it with French trivia and news as well as my blog posts. It’s a lot of work! As a result, I don’t keep up with my fellow bloggers as well as I once did.

Just as my efforts seemed to be starting to drive traffic to my blog, Elon took over Twitter and everything fell apart. Already uncertain about whether Twitter was worth it, I took a couple months off to see if Twitter would survive the turmoil. I went back to tweeting in January.

There are aspects that I enjoy. For one thing, I have to dig up a lot material to post and am furthering my knowledge of a people and culture that I love. But Tweets are so ephemeral. I feel like my energy is immediately lost in a sea of competing 4-second sound bites. It’s definitely not as fulfilling as blogging. And, I find myself constantly questioning whether to keep it up.

Should I continue or quit? I wish a fairy godmother would appear and tell me what to do but I’m afraid there’s no one best answer.

    1. Yes, I find social media exhausting too. It tends to zap your energy. While blogging tends to actually make me feel good. I can’t quite since it’s part of my job haha. But I do enjoy blogging most.

  55. I like blogging and don’t feel under pressure to compete, which seems to be the case on social media. It’s all about followers and a large amount of likes. I heard of the coined term: Instagram Famous. It doesn’t appeal to me but each to their own.

    1. Yes, social media definitely concentrates on likes and followers. With blogging it feels like it’s more about the content.

      1. I agree. And it’s not competitive.

  56. I completely agree! The content on social media is much more superficial but for this reason it is also easier to access, but blogs definitely allow you to share more and engage in conversations!

    1. Yes, so true. Blogging is so much more fulfilling because people actually care about the content.

  57. I have experienced the same as you between blogging and social media, I really am not a fan of social media. It does get me more exposure to my blog posts, so that is the main reason I am still using it.

My writing is always my first priority, and social media is whenever I have the time and I am in the mood to socialize.

It is a free marketing strategy, so we should use it whenever we can if we need and want more traffic to our blogs

    1. Yes, I also just post on socials because of the traffic it gets me to my blog. It’s the best way to use social media especially for writers.

      1. I am happy to hear social media does provide you more traffic, so Instagram is your best site I think you shared

        1. Actually, Twitter is surprisingly the best for traffic. Instagram is second.

          1. Really I was not aware of that, I do pretty well on Twitter with my blog posts

            1. Oh that’s good. I think Twitter is a good source for traffic.

              1. Twitter has been good for me, but some bloggers struggle they tell me on Twitter

                1. I think it depends on how you use Twitter. It can help your traffic or not at all.

                  1. That is true my friend, many people give up on Twitter instead of figuring out how to use it for the most success

  58. I think it’s good to balance the two and know your “why” for social media

    1. That’s very true. Knowing your goals for social media helps.

  59. I agree so much with this! And I try to express this on social media, but it’s like beating a dead horse. People just don’t get it. They like pictures and quick bits. I like depth That’s why I’m spending more time on WordPress than Facebook these days. I don’t even like Instagram. Social media is making the art of writing worse. Words are shortened, people share memes instead of using their own creativity, and only post about their achievements and social engagements rather than their true feelings. (And when someone does post about their true feeligns, others use that condescending “wow” emoji, which, to me, is a passive aggressive way of bullying).

    1. I think you need a good concentration span to survive on WordPress because the content actually matters as opposed to social media.

  60. Enjoyed your post. I think reading a blog requires more of an attention span than social media, which has a more instant appeal. Using both as a means of expression is a way of letting one’s message reach a wider audience.

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah and I think it’s also more work creating a blog post. But yes, both are great for reaching a larger audience.

  61. I prefer blogging to social media, at least as it pertains to my writing. I feel that I can be more creative with a blog whereas social media pages are very much cut and paste. Aside from the content, my Facebook page looks very similar to everyone else’s Facebook page. My WordPress blog, on the other hand, can have any number of themes and can be customized to whatever extent I wish, which truly makes it my creation.

The reader’s intent also differs between blogging and social media. When I log into wordpress I will often search for blog posts on a specific topic. Although I know the various social media platforms have search features I rarely use them.

I think blogging lends itself to long form content very well whereas social media does best (not necessarily better) with visual and auditory content. As a singer-songwriter I feel my reach, in terms of my music, is greater via social media than it is through blogging.

    1. I completely agree. I think it definitely depends on what type of content you want to share and who your primary audience is. I love how much I can express myself on WordPress and I love the genuine connections but certain things I enjoy more about social media.

  62. This post really resonates with me! I’m currently trying to determine what my relationship is going to be with social media as it pertains to blogging because I want to connect with people in a genuine way and for people to actually engage with my content! This analysis was spot on. Thank you.

    1. Thank you! I totally understand how you feel. They both really have pros and cons but it just depends on your goals.

  63. Hi Pooja,

I have quitted Social media in the month of March.

The idea of quitting social media was going in my mind for a long time.
This was my 5th and final attempt to quit social media in last 6 months.

For my own ‘mental peace’ I did it.

It’s true I am not good at getting more people around me.
    “Personal life is personal issue.”
I’m a private person, and don’t want to tell more details about me (or know about other people).

Social media can be beneficial for professional use, such as introducing, standardising and maintaining “businesses”.

Blogging is mood relaxing, open and meaningful. People are more sensible, responsive and kind here.
So I like this place a lot.

    1. Yes, that makes sense. Social media isn’t for everyone. Blogging is a different experience that can fit some better.

  64. Both. It would be a shame to use one and not the other . There’s only so many methods of free marketing . Not as easy as paying for ads but if you put in the right type of digital marketing you can certainly succeed.

    1. Yeah, I agree there are pros to both if used well.

  65. Great comparison, I prefer to choose blogging. You can become popular with social media but blogging can also give you decent and thoughtful audience.

    1. So true, I have some videos on social media with millions of views but the comments are not really meaningful at all. The posts I share here with fewer views still get great comments.

    1. What a wonderful way to describe that.
