Country Songs I Discovered

As you guys know I really enjoyed my country music course that I took and some time ago I wrote a post about my favourite musicians. I decided to also write a post which specifically was about the songs I truly enjoyed and some information about the song and why I loved it so much.

The Carter Family- No Depression

As you may know from my previous post The Carter Family is country music royalty and No Depression at least to me is one of the most beautiful, raw and real songs I have ever heard not only in country but in music in general. It was released during the Great Depression and I think it did a great job in describing what life in the 1930’s was like in the South for the working class.

Dixie Chicks-

After the 2003 incident The Dixie Chicks received an insane amount of hate even though they were just expressing their opinion and practicing their right to freedom of speech. This song was released to address this and to express their side of everything. I love that they refused to apologise and stayed strong.

Kitty Wells- It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels

This song was among the first response songs ever written in country music. It was a time when honky tonks were popular and many men got drunk in these honky tonks and cheated on their wives. However, instead of taking responsibility for their actions the men often blamed the women at honky tonks who were referred to as honky tonk angels. Hank Williams song Wild Side Of Life in particular did this to which this song by Wells’ was released as a response.

Dolly Parton- 9 to 5

I mean it’s Dolly Parton of course she had to be on this list! This song in particular is such a perfect description of what blue collar work feels like for the proletariat that I was just obsessed with it. Of course, it helps that it’s also super catchy and fun to listen to!

Johnny Cash- Folsom Prison Blues

I love Johnny Cash and this song is probably one of my favourite songs by him. I think it’s amazing how much time he spent trying to reform prisons and that he even performed in prisons.

Let me know in the comments if you would be interested in reading a post will the full list of country songs I learnt in my class!

Country Musicians I Discovered

As you guys know I really enjoyed my country music class and thought I would share some of my favourite artists that I learnt about along with some background information on them and their music. Also this is far from the full list there are lots more musicians that I loved these five are just the ones that truly stood out for me.

The Carter Family

To me at least The Carter Family is really the heart of what country music is. They are really country royalty and the people who pretty much started what we now know as country music. There were of course other early musicians but they were extremely popular. What really stood out for me as well was that they didn’t make much from the music and continued working throughout their life and only made music for a couple of hours every year.

The Dixie Chicks

I love the Dixie Chicks so much! They are an incredible band that you have likely heard of at some point if you were alive in the 2000’s. They were the biggest country band at one point but unfortunately lost a large chunk of their fan base due to an incident in 2003. However, this changed their sound and made them more alt.country which I actually love!

Steve Earle

He’s another alt.country musician that I am really into. He has a very unique sound that isn’t exactly country and isn’t rock either. It’s just very unique and I personally really enjoy it.

Old Crow Medicine Road

This is another alternative country band that I have been very obsessed with lately. I love their sound and how old school country they sound.

Kitty Wells

I absolutely love her because she started something called response songs which are a very classy version of a diss track. Basically in a response song the singer will usually use the song they are responding to’s music, rhythm and sometimes words and respond to that song in this way. Kitty Wells’ response was to a Hank Williams song but also country in general which was blaming women in honky tonks for the affairs men were having there but she was like it’s not the ladies fault it’s the men who act like they aren’t married and sleep with random women they meet at the honky tonk.

O.B. McClinton

He is one of the very few African American country musicians and instead of hiding his race or not talking about it he put it out there and was proud of being African American. He also knew what racists were saying about him and his music and made fun of it. Unfortunately, he eventually stopped making country music due to the racism he faced but the music he did make was amazing.

How Many Of My 2019 Goals Did I Keep

I made a list of what goals I wanted to achieve in 2019 and here is a little recap of what I was able to achieve and the ones I’m still going to have to work harder on next year.

For the original 2019 goals post click here.

Image result for prepared gif

Be prepared- I think I didn’t do great with this one in general but I did try really hard to be prepared. I feel like sometimes you can’t be prepared no matter how hard you try so considering those situations I think I did good!

Image result for yes to life gif

Be more open- I definitely succeeded with this one! I have been way more open this year and I’ve tried hard not to let my anxiety/depression get in the way of having fun. I have had some amazing experiences and met some really great people due to that and I’m very thankful that I made this one of my goals!

Image result for read gif

Read more- Technically I did read more it just happened to be for my courses so I guess that counts…

Image result for travel gif

Travel more- I definitely kept this goal too! I traveled a lot in Nairobi- not anywhere like far just to different places in Nairobi- and I’ve been going to some fun places in St. Catharines/Niagara too. I don’t think you need to go far or spend a lot of money to travel I think just going somewhere new even in the area you live in counts!

Image result for yes to life gif

Don’t be afraid to take chances- Kept this one for sure too! I tried a lot more new things and I had a great time going out of my comfort zone this year.

Image result for writing gif

Do more writing- I tried to keep this one but year was kind of busy with school so I couldn’t write as much as I wanted to.

Image result for do you want to build a snowman gif

Build a snowman- There’s still time to achieve this one!

Image result for thank you gif

Reach 10K WordPress Followers- I did and even went on to reach 12k which was amazing and I am sooo thankful for all the support I get here!

5 Things I Learnt This Year

Since 2019 is almost over I thought I could do a few posts for the next few days about 2019 and what I learnt, some of my favourites and more. Hope you enjoy them!

Stop saying it’s okay- One very important thing I learnt in 2019 is to stop saying ‘it’s okay’ when people say apologise. Saying it’s okay tells the person that their behaviour is okay and that you’ll forgive them even if they repeat it. Instead I’ve learnt to say ‘thanks for apologising’ or ‘I’m glad you apologised thanks for understanding how I feel’ or something along those lines.

Being alone doesn’t mean you’re lonely- I started out 2019 in a relationship that wasn’t working for me so I decided to stop dating till I knew what I wanted and was ready to be in another relationship. It really helped me get to know myself better and it also helped me realise what I want in a relationship. Let me know in the comments if you guys would like a more detailed post about my past relationships/why I decided to stay single this year/what I learnt from being self partnered this year.

Be yourself- I know it’s a cliche but be yourself because everyone else is already taken. I’ve always had a hard time being myself around others but now I’ve learnt to be okay with who I am and even though I’m not exactly as comfortable being myself yet as I wish I was I’m still pretty comfortable compared to last year.

It’s okay to be emotional-  emotions are often portrayed as something negative especially when it comes to women and particularly so when it comes to women of colour. A lot of people feel the need to suppress their emotions and I felt that too. But this year I’m learning to express myself better. Plus, becoming more spiritual has really helped me a lot- shout out to my mum for helping me find more spiritual ways to deal with my emotions!

Go for it- honestly live life like you have nothing to lose. Another thing that you hear a lot but is actually really good advice. I just go for it these days even if it makes me anxious or even if I end up failing. I would rather have tried and failed and gotten experience than have been too afraid to try something new.

Let me know in the comments below what you learnt in 2019!

Tips For Making Your Transition To Veganism Easier

Here are some tips to make your transition to veganism easier whether you’re doing Veganuary or thinking of a permanent lifestyle/diet change. Hope they help!

Image result for good luck gif

Wait a while before trying substitutes- Your taste buds get really used to the taste of non-vegan food if you have, like most people, been eating them your whole life. However, your taste buds slowly change over time and if you start introducing vegan substitutes slowly into your meals you’ll begin to enjoy them more. If you just randomly start using substitutes you’re more likely to not enjoy them because they won’t be the exact same as what you’re used to. Personally, I hated cheese substitutes when I first tried them but now after about a year I love them!

Image result for give it time gif

Try substitutes- I would suggest start add vegan substitutes to your food before you even go fully vegan. And don’t be afraid of substitutes. They’re a great way to eat what you love just that these will be plant based. I’m going to be honest and tell you that not all substitutes are great but keep looking and of course do your research. Don’t give up because you can’t find great substitutes instead read what other vegans have to say and what substitutes they love.

Appreciate that vegan foods taste different- Like I said substitutes aren’t always great and even though some of them are really close to the non-plant based foods they are not always the exact same. I’ve noticed a lot of people like to compare vegan foods to non-vegan foods by making them look, smell and taste like non-vegan food (which is great if you’re into that!) but instead of always trying to eat substitutes I would recommend trying to enjoy vegan food for what it is. It tastes unique and wonderful and a vegan diet can open up your taste buds to a whole variety of new tastes and flavours so try to enjoy them for what they are.

Do a lot of research- Before going fully vegan (and even after!) make sure to do a lot of research so you don’t end up lacking vitamins or negatively effecting your health. Veganism is not always easy and it takes a while to get it perfectly right.

Image result for research gif

Don’t give up- A lot of people give up on veganism after a while. Some think it’s too hard while some have health issues. My advice would be that instead of giving up try doing more research. If you’re lacking something do research on how to get that on a vegan diet and try that first. If you absolutely feel like it’s not working for you though don’t force yourself to keep eating vegan.

Top Tips for Veganuary 2019

Good luck to everyone trying out veganuary I hope these tips help!

That Vegan Polerina

This new year is set to be the biggest for participation in Veganuary (a challenge to try the vegan lifestyle for the month of January). Living a vegan lifestyle has become and is becoming increasingly easier, with a wide range of products landing in shops around the world, but as with any lifestyle and diet change, it is not without its challenges.

As a “new” vegan (I transitioned late September 2018), I thought I’d share my favourite tips, tricks, and words of advice regarding the journey into veganism. Best of luck to everyone participating in Veganuary, or otherwise beginning their vegan transition in 2019!

  1. Educate yo’self!!!  There are a number of reasons why people participate in Veganuary/are interested in trying veganism, but three main reasons people stay vegan are 1) for the animals, 2) for the planet, and 3) for their own health (or any combination of these reasons). Whether you…
